Game of the Day: Nets at Heat
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Brooklyn Nets at Miami Heat

The Brooklyn Nets have spent the last few months proving they belong among the elite teams in the Eastern Conference. The Nets will get a chance to make their case once again when they visit the Miami Heat on Tuesday. Brooklyn won each of the first three meetings with the Heat and owns a 32-13 record in 2014 while East-leading Miami is 29-16 in that span with a pair of losses to the Nets.

The Heat appear to have recovered completely from their rough stretch in March and tried to damage the New York Knicks’ playoff dreams with a 102-91 home victory on Sunday. Miami is a game up on the Indiana Pacers for the top spot in the East - two games clear in the loss column - and will get Indiana at home on Friday after a tough back-to-back against Brooklyn and at Memphis. The Nets are still clinging to the hope that they can catch Toronto for the top spot in the Atlantic Division and homecourt advantage in the first round. They sit 2 1/2 games back in that race with six left.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, Sun Sports (Miami)

LINE HISTORY: Suggested lines out of Las Vegas have the Heat as 6.5-point home faves with a total of 196.

INJURY REPORT: Heat - G Dwyane Wade (Questionable, hamstring), C Greg Oden (Questionable, back), F Chris Andersen (Questionable, back). Nets - F Kevin Garnett (Out, back)

WHY BET THE NETS (42-34 SU, 41-35 ATS, 38-34-4 O/U): Brooklyn got Kevin Garnett (back spasms) back from a 19-game absence on Sunday and the veteran worked his way into game action with 10 points and four rebounds in 13 minutes during a 105-101 win over the Philadelphia 76ers. Garnett is not expected to play on Tuesday but should be back for the second half of the Florida trip at Orlando on Wednesday and is following a strict plan to get back in game shape for the postseason. “Obviously, I’m not where I want to be, but I felt good, I felt strong,” Garnett told reporters. “It’s been a journey to get back to this point, so I’m just trying to contribute at this point.”

WHY BET THE HEAT (53-23 SU, 36-38-2 ATS, 41-35 O/U): Miami is hoping to get one of its own stars healthy for the playoffs in Dwyane Wade, who has missed the last six games with a hamstring injury. The Heat are 5-1 in that span, and LeBron James is carrying the load by putting up at least 32 points in three of the last four games. The superstar put up 38 points in Sunday’s 102-91 triumph. Miami’s best work lately has come on the defensive end, where they have held opponents to an average of 79.2 points in the last five victories.

          TRENDS:

          * Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Miami.
          * Home team is 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings.
          * Nets are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games.
          * Heat are 6-0 ATS in their last six vs. Eastern Conference.

            Tuesday, April 8

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bank Shots: NBA's weekly betting news and notes
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of March 31-April 6.

Hottest ATS - Chicago Bulls (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS)

The third seed in the Eastern Conference is still up for grabs, and the Bulls have staked their claim to the spot with a five-game winning streak that has them tied with the Atlantic Division-leading Toronto Raptors. Chicago is firing on all cylinders as the regular season winds down, winning all four of its games this week by at least 12 points and capping it with an 18-point drubbing of the host Washington Wizards to improve to 5-1-1 ATS in its last seven. Chicago winds down its schedule with games against Minnesota, Detroit, New York, Orlando and Charlotte.

Coldest ATS - Indiana Pacers (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS)

The Pacers are imploding like few top-tier teams before them, and oddsmakers are scrambling to keep up with the descent. The Pacers are 0-9 ATS in their last nine games, including last week's four-game stretch that saw them get trounced by 26 against San Antonio, squeak out a narrow win over a subpar Detroit team and follow that up with losses to Toronto and Atlanta. The one-sided defeat to the Hawks was so bad, center Roy Hibbert tapped out after just nine minutes and didn't play at all in the second half.

Best Over play - Detroit Pistons (2-2 SU, 4-0 O/U)

You have to give it to the Pistons, who are finishing out their disappointing season the same way they started it: with a high-octane offense and a virtually non-existent defense. Detroit extended its streak of "over" results to five last week, earning a 116-111 win over Milwaukee and a 115-111 triumph over Boston with losses to the Pacers and Brooklyn Nets in between. No team has paid off "over" bettors as well as Detroit, which goes into the final stretch of the season with an absurd 52-25-0 O/U mark.

Best Under play - Sacramento Kings (2-2 SU, 1-3 O/U)

No team played a perfect "under" week, but the Kings came about as close as anyone. Sacramento opened with a 102-97 win over New Orleans - a game that went just 2.5 points over the total - before defeating the Lakers and dropping decisions to Golden State and Dallas. The absence of electrifying point guard Isaiah Thomas has played a part in the muted Sacramento offense - particularly since, beyond Rudy Gay and DeMarcus Cousins, the Kings don't have any reliable scoring options.

            Surveying the schedule

The Phoenix Suns come into the week clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, and have a difficult road ahead. The Suns open the week with the first of a three-game road trip in New Orleans - led by shot-blocking phenom Anthony Davis - and follow that up with a tough Texas two-step against the red-hot San Antonio Spurs and seventh-place Dallas Mavericks. Phoenix closes out the sked with a difficult home game against Memphis and a road finale in Sacramento.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week's best NBA spot bet opportunites
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Letdown spot

Miami has a tough schedule this week that includes four games against playoff-caliber teams. The Heat open things at home on Tuesday night against Brooklyn, and then travel for a game on Wednesday night in Memphis. Their showdown game against Indiana comes on Friday night before concluding the week in Atlanta on Saturday.

The Heat will be looking to avenge an 84-83 loss to the Pacers on Friday night. If Miami is successful in doing so, then their game the very next night in Atlanta will be a certified letdown spot. Miami will also be playing their fourth game in five nights, so their game against the Hawks also comes in a difficult scheduling spot.

              Look-ahead spot

The San Antonio Spurs have three games this week with two on the road and one at home. The Spurs will play in Minnesota on Tuesday night and in Dallas on Thursday. San Antonio then returns home to host Phoenix on Friday night.

San Antonio beat both the Timberwolves and Mavericks the last time they played, but they got blown out by 21 points (106-85) in Phoenix. San Antonio only has two losses over their last 25 games coming into Tuesday’s game, and the rematch game versus the Suns is one the Spurs have circled. San Antonio will be looking to atone for that loss to Phoenix, so they may lack focus the night before in Dallas.

              Schedule spot

The Houston Rockets will play four games this week with three of those games on the road. They open the week on Tuesday night in Los Angeles against the Lakers, and then play the next night in Denver. The Rockets play in Minnesota on Friday night before finishing the week at home on Saturday night against New Orleans.

Houston’s trouble spot comes in that Saturday night home game versus the Pelicans. The Rockets will be playing on a back-to-back set and it will also be their third game in four nights and their fourth game in five nights overall. Houston will likely go thru the motions against New Orleans on Saturday night.

Tony Parker, San Antonio - Out Tuesday

San Antonio Spurs PG Tony Parker started suffering from back spasms and did not return to Sunday's game against the Grizzlies. He underwent an MRI which showed inflammation in his back. He will not play Tuesday against the Timberwolves.

Dumars to step down as Pistons President

Joe Dumars has told multiple sources within the NBA that he plans to resign from his role as the Pistons president. According to The Detroit News, the decision could even come as early as this week.

Dumars has had a rough season in Detroit to say the least. After going on an offseason spending spree, the Pistons ended up being abysmal on the court going 28-49 (32-44-1 against the spread).

Lakers: Calipari is not our next coach

Is John Calipari heading from the Bluegrass State to Hollywood?

Former Kentucky basketball star Rex Chapman tweeted Monday that Calipari, the Wildcats' coach, would be the Los Angeles Lakers' next coach.

The Lakers moved quickly to deny the report, which came shortly before Kentucky took on Connecticut in the national championship game at Arlington, Texas.

The Los Angeles Times quoted Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak saying the "rumor is untrue."

Calipari is finishing his fifth season at Kentucky, and he led the Wildcats to the 2012 national title. He previously guided Massachusetts and Memphis to the Final Four, though both of those appearances were later erased due to NCAA violations.

                Raptors' Valanciunas charged with DUI

Toronto Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, the team confirmed Monday.

Ontario Provincial Police arrested Valanciunas at a home early Monday morning.

Valanciunas, 21, is in his second season with the Raptors. He is averaging 11 points and 8.6 rebounds a game.

The L.A. Lakers have been one of the hottest Over plays this season, holding an O/U record of 43-34, but their offense has disappeared lately. Over their past five, the Lakers have gone under four times including three straight.

The No.12 ranked offense in the league has been averaging 102.5 ppg this season, but over the past three have only averaged 98 ppg.

The total sits at 226.5 for the Lakers and visiting Rockets, who have averaged 217 ppg in their three contests this season.

                        Tuesday's Tips

                        April 8, 2014

Pistons at Hawks – 7:35 PM EST

                        Detroit: 28-49 SU, 32-44-1 ATS
                        Atlanta: 34-42 SU, 33-42-1 ATS

The Pistons and Hawks are making up this game after bad weather kept Detroit away from the Peach State on January 29. Atlanta is making a comeback following a six-game skid, winning three of its past four contests, including Sunday’s rout of Indiana as eight-point underdogs, 107-88. Following New York’s two-game losing streak, the Hawks have grabbed a two-game edge for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Pistons are looking for consecutive victories for the first time since mid-February, coming off Saturday night’s rally over the Celtics, 115-111. Detroit failed to cover as 6 ½-point home favorites, falling to 1-6 ATS the last seven games, with the lone cover coming as 10 ½-point underdogs at Indiana. The Hawks have won two of the first three meetings with the Pistons this season, while Atlanta has taken each of the past 10 matchups at Philips Arena, dating back to 2008.

Nets at Heat – 8:05 PM EST

                        Brooklyn: 42-34 SU, 41-35 ATS
                        Miami: 53-23 SU, 36-38-2 ATS

The Heat has rallied back to steal the top spot in the Eastern Conference to pass the fading Pacers, but Miami hasn’t figured out how to beat Brooklyn this season. In three meetings, the Nets have won all three times, including two victories by one-point apiece, as Brooklyn staved off Miami, 96-95 as nine-point ‘dogs in mid-March. The Nets will likely finish as the fifth-seed in the Eastern Conference, which means Brooklyn could draw Miami in the second round of the playoffs, assuming the Heat capture the top seed.

Miami has won five of its past six games, including Sunday’s 102-91 triumph over New York as 6 ½-point favorites. Brooklyn is also rolling of late, winning five of six following consecutive overtime losses at New Orleans and Charlotte. Since upsetting Miami on March 12, the Nets have dropped four of their past six contests away from Barclays Center, while allowing at least 100 points in each of those games. Brooklyn has pushed the tempo of late by hitting the ‘over’ in eight of the last 11 contests.

Spurs at Wolves – 8:05 PM EST

San Antonio: 60-17 SU, 43-34 ATS
                        Minnesota: 38-38 SU, 37-39 ATS

The Spurs are on the verge of locking up home-court advantage throughout the playoffs, as San Antonio goes for its 21st win in 22 tries. Gregg Popovich’s club heads to Minnesota after blowing out Memphis on Sunday night, 112-92 to cash as seven-point favorites. San Antonio has won and covered seven of its past eight in the role of a road favorite, but it will be without point guard Tony Parker, who suffered a back injury against the Grizzlies.

The Wolves have climbed back to the .500 mark, but this team won’t be headed to the playoffs. Minnesota was tripped up at Orlando on Saturday, one night after shocking Miami in double-overtime as an 8 ½-point underdog, 122-121. Rick Adelman’s team has won five of their past seven games at the Target Center, but Minnesota has dropped each of its two matchups with San Antonio this season on the road. The Wolves will be without two starters on Tuesday as guard Kevin Martin (foot) and center Nikola Pekovic (ankle) are both out due to injury.

Mavericks at Jazz – 9:05 PM EST

                        Dallas: 47-31 SU, 42-36 ATS
                        Utah: 24-53 SU, 31-40-6 ATS

The Mavericks were put in a tough position towards the end of the season by hitting the road for four games. However, Dallas has come through with flying colors by winning each of the first three games to stay alive for a playoff berth in the Western Conference, as Rick Carlisle’s team staved off Sacramento on Sunday, 93-91. The Mavs have taken care of non-playoff squads with recent wins over the Kings and Lakers, as Dallas goes for the season sweep of Utah tonight after grabbing the first three meetings.

The Jazz has lost 17 of their past 20 games, including Sunday’s 130-102 blowout loss at Golden State as 12-point underdogs. Utah has struggled at home as well, winning just twice in the last eight contests at Energy Solutions Arena, while posting a 2-5-1 ATS the previous eight in the home underdog role. Utah’s offense has stunk of late by scoring less than 100 points in eight of the last 10 games, but the ‘over’ has hit in five of the past seven games.
