    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Coaching records of people from the Duke coaching tree.........

-- Mike Brey, 399-211-- Only guy on list who didn't play for Duke.

-- Tommy Amaker, 315-209-- Struggled at Seton Hall/Michigan, found good spot at Harvard.

-- Jeff Capel, 161-92-- Made NCAAs three times in nine years (VCU/Okla).

-- Quin Snyder 126-91-- Drifting thru NBA assistant coaching ranks after he got fired by Missouri for committing NCAA violations.

-- Johnny Dawkins 117-87-- Made NCAAs for first time this season.

-- Chris Collins 10-19-- Supposedly had a big recruiting year.

-- Bobby Hurley 19-10-- My guess as to who will replace Krzyzewski.

    *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.........

    13) Aaron Harang/Matt Garza both had no-hitters thru six innings at Miller Park Wednesday; Chris Johnson homered in 7th, Braves won 1-0.

    12) What are the odds the first Eagle-Redskin game is in primetime? Schedule is going to be released in mid-to-late April, always a fun day.

    11) NBA referee Dick Bavetta worked his 2,633rd consecutive game last night; he is 74 years old, and still reffing NBA games. Wow.

    10) Odd trivia: Bartolo Colon pitched against the Nationals last night, who are now managed by Matt Williams. Colon's major league debut was April 4, 1997, for the Indians, whose third baseman that night was......Matt Williams.

    9) Bryce Harper is still the youngest guy in the major leagues.

    8) A's got hosed on a replay call Wednesday afternoon, which begs the question, are they letting people know which umps are reviewing which game in New York?

My point is this: Angel Hernandez hasn't umpired yet, which means he is in New York doing replay reviews. Hernandez and Bob Melvin don't get along well; I do not want him deciding critical plays in A's games. Ever.

    7) Houston hired Kelvin Sampson, Washington State hired Ernie Kent, couple of retreads getting jobs. From what I read, Sampson is set up to win right away with the Cougars-- they've got lot of players coming back next year, and Sampson is a proven winner at this level-- he just has to abide by NCAA rules.

Being ironical department: AD at Houston has a degree from Indiana, which was the last college job Sampson had.

    6) How do these guys get jobs and not Ben Howland, who has been in three Final Fours and won the Pac-12 regular season thirteen months ago at UCLA?

    5) Since 2000, Michigan State has been in the most Final Fours (5), followed by Florida, UConn and North Carolina with four each.

    4) Over the last five years, under is 96-64 with Phil Cuzzi behind the plate. Over last three years, home underdogs are 6-22 with John Tumpane behind the dish.

    3) Tampa Bay Rays gave pitcher Chris Archer six years, $25.5M; Archer has a career record of 10-10 in 27 career starts. Lot of calculated risk there.

    2) Knicks won, Atlanta lost; both teams are both 10 games under .500, tied for the #8 slot and last playoff berth in the East. Dallas is 44-31, on the outside looking in on the western side. Doesn't seem right.

    1) Major league baseball players get $99 a day on the road in meal money; NBA guys gets $124 a day. $124 buys an awful lot of pizza.

Quick story before I go: In 1974, A's brought up Claudell Washington, who went on to a 17-year big league career. That first year, Washington ate fast food, and with his leftover meal money, bought himself a mink coat. The big leagues are fun.

Second-year starting pitcher Chris Archer and the Tampa Bay Rays agreed to a six-year contract worth $25.5 million that includes team options to tie Archer through the team through 2021.

Archer, who starts his first game of the season and 28th of his career Thursday, was acquired in 2011 in a trade with the Chicago Cubs that shipped Matt Garza out of Tampa.

He finished third Rookie of the Year voting last season behind teammate Wil Myers. Archer was 9-7 with a 3.22 ERA in 23 starts last season.

Diamondbacks happy to see Delgado on the mound

Though it's early, not a lot has gone the D-backs way so far this season. They've already manged to amass a 1-3 record.

Randall Delgado will take to the mound Thursday, which should bring some relief for Arizona. In the D-backs past seven games with Delgado starting, the team has walked away with a win in six of those. Arizona has also had opposing pitcher, Tim Lincecum's, number taking six of the past eight when he is on the mound.

Darvish expected back in the rotation Sunday

Good news for the Texas Rangers as Yu Darvish will make his first start of the season against the Tampa Bay Rays Sunday.

Darvish had to delay his initial start due to neck stiffness. After throwing an 86-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and feeling no pain Wednesday, the Rangers didn't hesitate to put him back on the mound.

Darvish was 13-9 with a 2.84 ERA and 277 strikeouts while finishing second in Cy Young voting last season.

SMU was team most slighted by getting left out of NCAAs, they lost twice to Louisville, by 13-8 points, now they face Minnesota team that is coached by Richard Pitino-- I'm guessing he has an excellent scouting report on SMU. Mustangs allowed 61.3 ppg in winning first four games in this tournament; they only used two guys more than 24:00 Tuesday, winning game they trailed by 13 in second half. Southern Methodist Mustangs vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers (+3, 132.5)

Southern Methodist looks for its first NIT title in program history when it faces Minnesota in New York on Thursday. The Mustangs erased a 13-point deficit in the second half to beat Clemson 65-59 for their fourth win in a row after being controversially left out of the NCAA tournament. "We haven't had a lot of nice things happen at SMU for a long, long time," coach Larry Brown admitted to reporters. "So if we are fortunate enough to win a championship like this and I am a part of it, it would be pretty neat."

Minnesota advanced to its second NIT championship game in the last three years after holding off Florida State 67-64 in overtime. The Golden Gophers were blown out 75-51 by Stanford in the 2012 final and hope to take care of business this time around after squandering a 15-point lead against the Seminoles before squeaking out a victory. "We really didn't want it to end," senior guard Austin Hollins told reporters. The guys really stuck together in overtime and played as hard as we could."

                    INJURY REPORT:
SMU: C Yanick Moreira (Qut for season, knee). Minnesota: C Elliott Eliason (Questionable, ankle), F Oto Osenieks (Out indefinitely, knee)

                    WHY BET MINNESOTA (24-13 SU, 16-16-1 ATS, 14-17-1 O/U:
Austin Hollins and DeAndre Mathieu each scored 17 points and Maurice Walker made six free throws in overtime to lift the Golden Gophers over Florida State. Minnesota has won the NIT in 1993 and 1998, but the last title was vacated due to an academic scandal. Andre Hollins tops the team in scoring (13.6), but has averaged just 7.2 points in four tournament games.

WHY BET SOUTHERN METHODIST (27-9 SU, 20-12 ATS, 12-19 O/U):
Markus Kennedy has played some of his best basketball of the season in the NIT and recorded 21 points, nine rebounds and three steals versus Clemson. Brown is the only coach to win an NBA and NCAA championship and can add an NIT title to his impressive collection with a win on Thursday. SMU can equal a program record set by the 1987-88 team for most victories in a season with 28 if it beats Minnesota.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Mustangs are 5-1 ATS in their last six non-conference games.
                    * Golden Gophers are 2-5 ATS in their last seven neutral site games.
                    * Under is 8-3 in Mustangs last 11 overall.
                    * Over is 13-6-1 in Golden Gophers last 20 neutral site games.

                    CONSENSUS:
70 percent of wagers are on SMU at -3.

Game of the Day: Spurs at Thunder
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder (-3, 209.5)

The San Antonio Spurs have won a franchise-record 19 straight games to open up a four-game lead over the Oklahoma City Thunder for the top spot in the Western Conference. The Thunder will look to end that winning streak and scratch a game off their deficit in the West when they host the Spurs on Thursday. San Antonio will be playing the second night of a back-to-back but was barely challenged in a 111-90 win over the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday.

The Spurs only had one player (Boris Diaw with 33) go for more than 29 minutes and have been able to get the starters plenty of rest with an average margin of victory of 23.5 points over the last four games. San Antonio could have a little more trouble on the defensive end while dealing with Kevin Durant, who is staring down Michael Jordan with his run of 38 straight games of at least 25 points. The superstar forward needs two more to tie Jordan, whose 40-game streak during the 1986-87 season is the longest in the last 50 years. Durant is averaging 25.7 points in three previous meetings with the Spurs this season.

                        TV:
                        8 p.m. ET, TNT

                        LINE HISTORY:
Books opened the Thunder as 2-point home faves which has been bet to -3. The total is up to 209.5 from the opening 209.

                        INJURY REPORT:
Spurs - F Aron Baynes (Questionable, ribs), F Matt Bonner (Out, calf). Thunder - G Reggie Jackson (Questionable, back), C Kendrick Perkins (Questionable, groin), G Russell Westbrook (Questionable, knee)

WHY BET SAN ANTONIO (59-16 SU, 42-33 ATS, 41-33-1 O/U):
San Antonio had a lot of trouble beating other top teams early in the season and dropped each of the first three meetings with the Thunder, most recently a 111-105 setback on Jan. 22. The Spurs have had fewer issues in that area of late and checked off wins over Miami, Indiana, Portland, Dallas, Chicago and Golden State (twice) during the current run. San Antonio locked up the Southwest Division with Houston’s loss to Toronto on Wednesday and is working toward homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs if it can hold off Oklahoma City.

WHY BET OKLAHOMA CITY (54-19 SU, 39-32-2 ATS, 37-36 O/U):
Oklahoma City comes in pretty hot as well with wins in eight of its last 10 games and had the last three days off to prepare following easy home victories over the Sacramento Kings and Utah Jazz. “It’s important to get the work in, but it’s also important to rest,” coach Scott Brooks told reporters. “Most coaches like me want to keep practicing and doing drills and scrimmaging and special situations. You also have to rest the body and mind, and our players understand that we have to utilize all of our days.” The Thunder embark on a four-game road trip after finishing with the Spurs and will play six of the final eight away from home.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Favorite is 8-3-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
                        * Spurs are 1-9-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
                        * Spurs are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 road games.
                        * Under is 5-2 in Thunder last seven home games.

                        CONSENSUS:
69 percent of wagers are on the Thunder.

                        NBA

                        Thursday, April 3

Clippers on Under tear on home floor

The Los Angeles Clippers have been kind to Under bettors in recent games at Staples Center. Lob City has gone 7-0-1 to the Under in its last eight home games.

Their last Over came in a 113-103 defeat to the San Antonio Spurs (total of 210.5) back on Feb. 18.

The Clips are home after a five-game road trip that saw them go 4-1 O/U. They'll host the Dallas Mavericks Thursday night and the total is currently 212. It is down one point from the opening 213.

Favorites have solid night on hardwood

If you hammered favorites on your NBA bets Wednesday night, you probably made out fairly well as they finished the night 9-4 against the spread, good for 69 percent winning clip.

The Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers were the only dogs to cover in the league's 13 games.

It has been a reasonably good seven days for NBA faves as they've gone 31-21-4 ATS (59.62 percent).

Thursday is a typically light night with just a pair of games - both of which are currently off the board.

Thunder open as 2-point faves over red-hot Spurs

The Oklahoma City Thunder have opened as 2-point home faves for their primetime matchup with the San Antonio Spurs Thursday.

The Spurs are the hottest team in basketball, having won 19-straight games and were underdogs just once during that streak (+3.5 at Golden State on March 22).

Odds were kept off the board overnight but books began posting lines earlier Thursday morning. The Thunder opened as 2-point faves with a total of 209. That has moved to -3 and the total has gone up a half-point to 209.5.

Spurs extend streak to 19, still cashing for backers

The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Golden State Warriors 111-90 Wednesday night for their franchise-record 19th straight win, a streak that keeps cashing for Spurs backers.

During their remarkable win streak the Spurs are now 15-4 against the spread, including their last four games in a row and 12 of their last 13.

The Spurs will have a tough task if they want to extend their streak to 20. They visit the Oklahoma City Thunder Thursday night and the early line out of Vegas has the Spurs as 1.5-point road dogs.
