Clippers Griffin opts for more rest

Los Angeles Clippers All-Star forward Blake Griffin did not play Monday against the Minnesota Timberwolves and is likely to remain idle all week to rest his ailing back for the playoffs.

Griffin was hurt in Saturday's game against the Houston Rockets. He felt back spasms strong enough that he removed himself from the game. He had been dealing with back spasms for 10 days.

Griffin decided to rest again Tuesday, when the Clippers beat the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night and is leaning toward sitting Wednesday night.

Hibbert says Pacers "don't deserve" the No.1 seed

The Indiana Pacers held first in the Eastern Conference all season long, but a loss to the Spurs Tuesday dropped them to No.2. The Miami Heat, who have been nipping at the Pacers heals all season have taken over the No.1 slot.

Pacers Roy Hibbert told reporters "Good for them. We don't deserve it."

Indiana is 12-11 since the all-star break and have dropped six of their last eight straight-up. They've also failed to break 90 points in seven of those eight games. The Pacers have gone Under in 11 of their past 12 games because of this offensive deficiency and have only covered once in that same span.

Bucks barely cover with meaningless basket in last seconds

The Detroit Pistons already put the final nail in the Milwaukee Bucks' coffin Monday, but that didn't stop the Bucks from hurting bettors.

Down 109-116 with only 7.3 seconds left on the clock, Jeff Middleton drained a meaningless hook shot down low for the Bucks. This bucket did not change the fortune for the players, but for bettors it meant the the Bucks covered by 1.5-points.

The Bucks now covered for of their past five on the road and have increased their record against the spread to 19-18 away from Milwaukee. The Pistons on the other hand have failed to cover in their last four at home and continue to be terrible for bettors at home with an ATS record of 15-24 at home.

Pucking the Trends: NHL's weekly betting news and notes
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of March 24-30

                Hot team

                Los Angeles Kings (4-0 SU)

The Kings are rounding into form at just the right time, putting together a four-win week to solidify its spot as the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference. Los Angeles fashioned a perfect 3-0 road trips with victories in Philadelphia, Washington and Pittsburgh before finishing things off with a 4-2 home triumph over the Winnipeg Jets. Netminder Jonathan Quick has been the catalyst for the Kings' late-season surge, winning each of his last five decisions and sitting at a scorching 11-2-0 over his last 13 games.

                Cold team

                Toronto Maple Leafs (0-3 SU)

Toronto fans have gone from moderately concerned to virtually inconsolable after watching their beloved Maple Leafs extend their losing streak to a season-high eight games. Toronto looked outclassed from start to finish in a 5-3 loss to the St. Louis Blues, then dropped a 4-2 decision to the Philadelphia Flyers and ended the week with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the St. Louis Blues. The Maple Leafs will look to turn things around this week with a three-game homestand that includes games against Calgary, Boston and Winnipeg.

                Best Over play

                Nashville Predators (4-0 O/U)

Well, this is unexpected. Traditionally one of the most defensive-minded, offense-starved teams in the NHL, the Predators let their hair down last week and handsomely rewarded those over bettors who put their faith in them. Nashville opened the week with a 5-4 shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche before bouncing back nicely in a 6-1 trouncing of the Buffalo Sabres. That momentum didn't carry over - the Predators dropped their next game 7-3 in Dallas - but they ended on a high with a 4-3 shootout triumph over Washington.

                Best Under play

                Pittsburgh Penguins (0-3-1 O/U)

Seeing the Penguins as a strong under play is almost as unlikely as tabbing the Predators as kings of the over. And yet, an 0-4-1 O/U run has Pittsburgh actually favouring the under for the season; it has surrendered the third-fewest goals in the Eastern Conference entering Monday, boasting sensational defense and goaltending to go along with its high-powered offense. The Penguins bounced back from consecutive 3-2 losses to Phoenix and Los Angeles by edging the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 and routing visiting Chicago 4-1.

                Surveying the schedule

There's never a good time for a Western Conference team to embark on a four-game jaunt through the East, but the timing is especially bad for the Dallas Stars. They open the week one point behind Phoenix in the race for the final West wild-card spot, but will play its next four games outside Texas, where it owns a subpar 15-17-4 record on the season. Dallas kicks off the stretch in Washington before heading south to face the Carolina Hurricanes, Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers in a four-day span.

This week's best NHL spot bet opportunities
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Letdown spot

The Senators are in a quick turnaround spot on Monday night, coming off a much-needed 6-3 win over Calgary on Sunday. Having collected at least a point in four straight games, winning three of those, I don't see a home game against the lowly Hurricanes drawing enough intensity.

Note that Carolina hasn't lost back-to-back games since March 15th and 16th and have picked up at least a point in three of its last four contests. This is the more winnable game for the Canes on a tough two-game trip that will also include a stop in Pittsburgh.

                  Lookahead spot

The Kings will host the Coyotes on Wednesday night, but could have one eye on Thursday's date with the rival Sharks in San Jose.

Phoenix has been a much better team on home ice this season, but that hasn't necessarily been the case lately. The 'Yotes enter the new week having won three of their last four games on the road, including a 4-3 victory in Los Angeles.

                  Schedule spot

A tough turnaround for the Blue Jackets on Friday night, as they return home to host a team they always struggle against, the Blackhawks, fresh off a game in Philadelphia on Thursday.

The Jackets are fighting for their playoff lives, but with the Blackhawks coming off a rough patch, I expect to see the defending Stanley Cup champs bring their 'A' game into this affair.

Jagr says Devils got "lucky," not impressed

Despite a 6-3 win victory over the Panthers and a four-point night, Jaromir Jagr was unhappy with the Devils Monday.

“We gotta play better hockey than today,” Jagr said, per NJ.com. “That’s for sure. Otherwise we don’t have a chance. We’ve gotta play better hockey. We were lucky.”

New Jersey has been far from spectacular on the road in recent memory, going just 20-54 in their last 74 away from home. The Devils (-156) look to clutch onto their playoff hopes when they face the lowly the Buffalo Sabres (+146) Tuesday.

Lightning/Canadiens clash in possible playoff preview

When the Lighting and Canadiens take to the ice in Tampa Bay Tuesday, there will be huge implications.

The Lightning, who currently sit two points behind Montreal in the standings, are trying to pass the Habs for second in the Metropolitan division and home-ice advantage in a likely first round playoff matchup. With a win, the Canadiens will officially book their tickets to the playoffs.
These two teams have had incredibly tight games so far this season, two went to a shootout and one to overtime, with Tampa Bay holding a 2-0-1 record.

The road team has been dominant in this series, taking five of the past six, which bodes well for Montreal (+120) who searches for their sixth straight when they visit Tampa Bay (-130) Tuesday.

Red Wings get last lease at Joe Louis Arena

The Detroit city council approved a new lease for the Detroit Red Wings and the Joe Louis Arena. The Red Wings have been discussing moving to a new arena and could very well do so as early as 2016, as the new lease expires in 2015.

Though a new arena will be nice, the team will have to miss the Joe Louis a little bit. The Red Wings have now had 20 straight seasons with playoffs in the building and have won two Stanley Cup finals there. Detroit also holds a remarkable record at the Joe Louis, going 469-225-27 in their last 721 home games.

                      Letdown spot

Minnesota has a big week ahead of them, and it begins Monday night when they host the Los Angeles Clippers. The Timberwolves host Memphis on Wednesday, and then play in Miami on Friday night. Their final game of the week comes the following night in Orlando, and that sets up as a bad spot for Minnesota.

The Timberwolves have been in poor form, so they will be primed for big efforts against the Clippers, Grizzlies, and Heat. Minnesota will be in letdown mode on Saturday night when they play the Magic, especially since they already beat Orlando this season.

                      Look-ahead spot

Chicago comes into this week currently with the #4 seed for the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls are just one game out of third place, and just 1.5 games ahead of fifth place. Chicago will play two teams in playoff contention, in Atlanta on Wednesday and in Washington on Saturday.

The Bulls host the lowly Milwaukee Bucks on Friday night, and there’s a good chance Chicago will overlook that game, especially with a huge game against the Wizards the following night. The Bulls are 0-2 versus Washington this season, and with the Wizards sitting just three games behind Chicago in the standings, the game is quite important. The Milwaukee game is simply a bad spot for the Bulls on Friday night.

                      Schedule spot

San Antonio goes into their Monday night game in Indiana on an incredible 19-1 SU and 15-5 ATS run over their last 20 games. The Spurs have been the best team in the NBA since the All-Star break as they’ve taken advantage of a slew of home games and a very easy schedule during that span.

The Spurs will play four games this week against playoff-contending teams. After Monday, San Antonio will host Golden State on Wednesday, play in Oklahoma City on Thursday, and close the week at home against Memphis on Sunday. The Spurs will be in a tough scheduling spot on Thursday at Oklahoma City as it will be a no-rest situation and the Spurs' third game in four nights, while the Thunder will have three full days of rest entering the game.
