Favorites have a tough night in the Association

It was a tough night in the Association for favorites. They went just 1-4 against the spread Tuesday night, only hitting at a mark of 20 percent.

Road favorites had an even worse night going 0-3 ATS.

The Heat, Wizards, Blazers and Raptors all failed to cover as favorites.

Heat pitiful against the spread vs. Celtics

Despite getting a lot of media attention and playing some good basketball this season, the Miami Heat have not been consistent for bettors. The Heat have a sub-.500 winning percentage (29-33-2) against the spread this season.

That record gets even worse when the Heat challenge the Boston Celtics. In the past 58 meetings the Heat are 19-39 ATS, a span that date backs to Dec. 2002. The Heat have increased problems at TD Gardens, going 3-13 ATS in Boston.

The Heat open as 6.5-point road favorites against the Celtics Wednesday.

History says expect low score in Jazz-Grizzlies matchup

The Utah Jazz are going to be visiting Memphis Wednesday night and that's a good thing for bettors. The Jazz and Grizzlies are both streaking towards the under both this season and beyond.

The Utah Jazz have an over/under record of 14-21 so far on the road this season. The more impressive trend is the Jazz were 11-10 O/U at one point this season, but have gone Under in 11 of their past 14 on the road.

As an added benefit to the Under trend, the Jazz and Grizzlies have gone under in 16 of their past 21 in the FedEx Forum.

The total for the game is currently at 188.

Cavs' Irving optimistic about return this season

Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving hopes his season is not over.

After it was announced Monday that the All-Star will miss at least two weeks and eight games with a strained biceps tendon, Irving is encouraged that the injury will not require surgery.

"If you could take a positive from the situation, obviously that would be one, that at this point, I don't have to get surgery, which is tremendous," Irving said at the shootaround before the Cavaliers' game against the Miami Heat on Tuesday night.

"We'll see in two weeks. I'm not going to give a definitive answer (on his return) because I don't know that answer. At this point, I'm just going to continue to support my teammates and be on the sideline. Whatever the medical team needs me to do and whatever's in my best interests, I'm going to do."

Tests showed that the Cavaliers' leading scorer has a strained tendon but not a tear.

Lightning have difficult test against Leafs at home

The Tampa Bay Lightning currently sits in third in the Eastern Conference, but that is not because of their road record. The Lightning's mediocre 17-16-1-1 road record, has been bogging them down all season.

The Lightning road record fares even worse when they travel to the Air Canada Centre to challenge the Maple Leafs. Tampa Bay is 7-20-1 in their past 28 in Toronto and they are running into a hot Leafs team.

In the past nine games at home the Leafs are 8-1, and the one loss came by a single goal.

Tampa Bay (+100) visits Toronto (-108) Wednesday.

Red-hot Bruins extend win streak to 10

The Boston Bruins extended their winning streak to 10 consecutive games thanks to a 4-2 win over the New Jersey Devils Tuesday night.

The Bruins not only have been winning, but have been outright dominant during their impressive streak, scoring 41 goals while giving up just 15.

The win streak has given the Bruins a comfortable 16-point lead in the Atlantic division and they trail the Pittsburgh Penguins by just one point for first place in the Eastern Conference.

The Bruins are off until Friday when they visit the Colorado Avalanche.

Blues at Blackhawks: What bettors need to know
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Blues at Chicago Blackhawks (-110, 5.5)

Positioned in the catbird seat for their second Presidents' Trophy in franchise history, the St. Louis Blues are looking to strengthen their spot atop the Central Division. The league-leading Blues have dominated their division mates this season (20-0-2) and vie for their fourth consecutive overall victory on Wednesday when they visit the rival Chicago Blackhawks. St. Louis bested another Central Division representative in its last outing, posting a 3-1 triumph over Winnipeg on Monday for its eighth win in nine games (8-0-1).

The Blues have defeated the Blackhawks in all three meetings this season, with two venturing into a shootout. Chicago squandered an early two-goal lead on Tuesday and stumbled to its third setback in four outings with a 3-2 overtime loss to Philadelphia. When asked if the Blackhawks can overcome their eight-point deficit and catch the Blues, coach Joel Quenneville said, "We can chip away, but it's not looking so hot right now."

                      TV:
                      8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports

                      ABOUT THE BLUES (47-14-7):
Ryan Miller has adjusted quite nicely from going from the NHL's version of the outhouse (Buffalo) to the penthouse (St. Louis). The United States Olympian improved to 7-0-1 with his new team after making 16 saves against the Jets, but has split four career decisions versus Chicago (2-2-0, 2.03 goals-against average). Captain David Backes scored twice against the Jets to extend his point streak to three games (two goals, two assists).

                      ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (39-15-15):
Jonathan Toews continued his offensive tear by notching an assist on defenseman Duncan Keith's goal on Tuesday. The captain has collected 10 points (eight goals, two assists) in his last eight games and has flustered the Blues throughout his career. Toews has recorded 32 points (12 goals, 20 assists) in 35 games versus the Central Division rival, including two-point performances in both a 3-2 loss on Oct. 9 and 6-5 setback on Dec. 28.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Blues are 4-0 in the last four meetings.
                      * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                      * Blues are 7-1 in their last eight vs. Western Conference.
                      * Blackhawks are 0-7 in their last seven vs. Central.

                      OVERTIME:

                      1. Chicago LW Brandon Saad missed his first game of the season on Tuesday with an upper-body injury. He is questionable for Wednesday's tilt.

                      2. St. Louis C T.J. Oshie is expected to return after missing one game to attend the birth of daughter Lyla Grace.

Jonas Valanciunas, Toronto Raptors - Doub Wed

Valanciunas suffered a lower back sprain against the Hawks on Tuesday and is not expected to play Wednesday against the Pelicans.

Injury to sideline Bucks' Sanders for season

Milwaukee Bucks center Larry Sanders will miss the remainder of the season while recovering from a fractured orbital bone.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel confirmed with Sanders that he will not return this season as a result of the injury that required surgery.

The 6-foot-11 Sanders was hurt on Feb. 8 during a game against Houston when he was elbowed by Rockets guard James Harden on a rebound. He told the Journal Sentinel that his recovery is progressing and he hopes to be healthy for the 2014-15 season

It was not a good season for the 25-year-old Sanders. He suffered a hand injury in a bar fight and missed a month with a thumb injury. The injuries limited Sanders to 23 games in which he averaged 7.7 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.7 blocked shots for the struggling Bucks.

Those numbers were down from a career season in 2012-13 when he averaged 9.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots.

76ers can move closer to futility mark

The Philadelphia 76ers have now lost 21-straight basketball games and can move closer to the record of 26 - set by the 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers - with a loss versus the Chicago Bulls Wednesday evening.

During the current, horrific stretch of basketball, the Sixers have covered just six times for bettors.

Philly will be on its home floor as a 13-point dog Wednesday evening. The teams have met twice thus far during the season, each covering the spread once.
