Arizona LHP Corbin may need Tommy John surgery

The Arizona Diamondbacks' scheduled opening-day starter has a partially torn ligament in his left elbow that could end his season before it begins.

Left-hander Patrick Corbin said Sunday that he might be facing season-ending Tommy John surgery. The team announced in a statement that the damage is the ulnar collateral ligament. Corbin is planning to get a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews before deciding on the surgery or rehab.

The 24-year-old Corbin felt stiffness in the elbow during the seventh inning of a spring training game on Saturday against the Cleveland Indians. It was his last scheduled outing before the regular-season opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Australia on March 22.

With Corbin on the shelf, left-hander Wade Miley was named to take his place in the opener.

Last season as a rookie, Corbin landed a spot on the National League All-Star team. He posted a 14-8 record with a 3.41 ERA and 178 strikeouts in 208 1/3 innings.

Orioles' 3B Machado 'unsure' for Opening Day

Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado acknowledged he might not be ready to go for opening day.

The 21-year-old Machado is still a few days away from running on his surgically repaired left knee, which was operated on last October. He told reporters Sunday that he was unsure if would be able to play for the start of the season.

Machado made the American League All-Star team last year in his first full season in the majors. He injured his knee running to first base against Tampa Bay with only six games left in the season.

WR Sanders signs 3-year deal with Broncos

The Denver Broncos agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders on a three-year contract after passing a physical, the team announced Sunday.

Sanders' deal is worth $15 million, a league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The National Football Post reported the deal is worth up to $18 million, including $6 million guaranteed.

"We're thrilled to announce the signing of Emmanuel Sanders," general manager John Elway said at a press conference. "He's a guy that has had a tremendous career so far, and we think that he's only scratched the surface. So we have great expectations of Emmanuel and really think he's going to come in and add a tremendous amount to the offensive side."

Sanders (5-foot-11, 180 pounds) is a fifth-year player who appeared in 56 career regular-season games (18 starts) during his first four NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, totaling 161 receptions for 2,030 yards with 11 touchdowns. He also owns 13 catches for 172 yards in four career postseason games played.

Sanders, who turns 27 on Monday, started 10 of 16 games for the Steelers in 2013 and recorded career highs in receptions (67), receiving yards (740) and touchdowns (6). Sanders caught at least one pass in every game and finished the year with four touchdowns in the Steelers' final six contests.

Sanders was selected by Pittsburgh in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft out of Southern Methodist University.

Texans RB Foster says he is medically cleared

Houston Texans running back Arian Foster, who had season-ending back surgery Nov. 15, turned to Twitter to announce he has been cleared by his doctor to return to the field.

"And for those wondering, I've been medically cleared by my doctor," Foster tweeted early Sunday morning.

Foster ran for 542 yards on 121 carries and one touchdown in eight games last season.

Foster worked through several injuries during the 2013 season, a back injury finally finishing his year.
