Game of the Day: Maple Leafs at Kings
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at Los Angeles Kings (-188, 5.5)

The Los Angeles Kings look to match a franchise-best nine-game winning streak and net Darryl Sutter his 500th coaching victory on Thursday when they open a five-game homestand against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Rookie Martin Jones made 24 saves in a 3-2 win over Calgary and turned aside 38 shots in the Kings' 3-1 victory in Toronto on Dec. 11, but is expected to take a seat in favor as Jonathan Quick. The 2012 Conn Smythe Trophy winner attempts to tie Rogie Vachon as he vies for his franchise-best 171st victory.

Anze Kopitar has admitted to receiving an "emotional boost" from the Olympics - and his recent play supports his statement. The Slovenian has collected four goals and eight assists in the last nine contests and scored and set up a tally on Monday. The Maple Leafs fell for just the seventh time in 21 games (14-4-3) with a 6-2 setback to San Jose on Tuesday.

      TV:
10:30 p.m. ET, TSN, FSW (Los Angeles)

      LINE HISTORY:
Los Angeles opened as high as a -200 home favorite but is down to -188 while the total opened 5.5.

      POWER RANKINGS:
      Toronto (-170) / Los Angeles (-178)

      INJURY WATCH:
      Toronto - C.Franson (Prob. Illness)

      ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (35-24-8):
Jonathan Bernier received the night off versus San Jose, but made dinner plans with some of his former Kings teammates for Wednesday night. "Try to let them know that they've got to shoot wide," the 25-year-old Bernier joked to TSN. Bernier, who was selected by Los Angeles with the 11th overall pick of the 2006 draft, stopped 20 shots in his first meeting against his former team.

      ABOUT THE KINGS (38-22-6):
Jeff Carter scored the tie-breaking goal midway through the third period and had an assist in his last meeting with Toronto. Carter has flustered the Maple Leafs in his career, tallying 11 times in 22 career contests and enters Thursday's tilt on a roll with three goals and an assist in his last four games. Defenseman Drew Doughty has seen his offense slip since the Olympics, but notched an assist for his first point in six outings.

      TRENDS:

      * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
      * Maple Leafs are 2-5 in the last seven meetings.
      * Road team is 5-0 in the last five meetings.

      CONSENSUS:
68 percent of bets are on the Kings. 64 percent of bets are on Under 5.5 goals.

NBA betting's quickest starters and strongest finishers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looking to shake up your NBA wagers in the home stretch of the season? If you’re thinking of playing first or second half lines, you may want to start with these six teams – three quick starters and three strong finishers.

        Best first half teams

        San Antonio Spurs

It seems the San Antonio Spurs make a habit of starting strong. Over the last three years they have been in the top two in the NBA in first-half margin, including this year where they currently lead the league with a plus-4.3 point differential.

This number has improved with the return of Kawhi Leonard to the starting lineup. In seven games since the small forward’s return, the Spurs are 7-0 SU (4-3 ATS), a mark that is boosted by the fact they are a plus-6.9 points in the first halves over this stretch. What’s more, this run includes wins over the Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls in which the Spurs have gone into the break with 11 and 28 point leads respectively.

        Oklahoma City Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder have one of the best benches in the NBA and that’s key to their ability to put teams to the sword in first halves. This is evidenced by the fact they lead the league in second-quarter margin at plus-3.0 points, contributing to an average half time lead of plus-4.2 points.

Oklahoma City’s bench ranks fourth in the league with 31.5 points per contest - a number that would be higher had point guard Reggie Jackson not had to start some 30 games this season in place of All-Star Russell Westbrook.

Now that Westbrook is back, Jackson has returned to anchoring the second unit which has contributed over 35 points per game in the team’s last five, including 37 in Tuesday night’s 106-98 win over the Houston Rockets as 4.5-point favorites.

        Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves are certainly frontrunners. They’re just 31-31 despite being one of the NBA’s best first-half teams, going into the intermission with an average lead of 4.2 points on 55.3 points in the game’s opening two quarters.

It seems their lack of depth catches up with them over a full 48 as their offense trails off to just over 50 points while being outscored by an average of 0.6 points. The quick starts would explain why they’re 21-11 SU in games decided by 10 points or more yet only 1-5 SU in games decided by three points or less.

        Best second half teams

        Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers are far and away the NBA’s best second-half team. Over the season’s first 64 games, Indiana is plus-5.7 points in a game’s second 24 minutes - almost a full basket better than the second-place Los Angeles Clippers. And this stat comes despite recent struggles that have seen the Pacers win just one of their last five (0-5 ATS) while amassing a minus-8.7 second-half point differential.

But help may have arrived in the oversized form of Andrew Bynum. The 7-foot center made his full debut Tuesday night, chipping in with eight points and 10 rebounds in just 15 minutes of play.

        Los Angeles Clippers

It’s the offensive structure Doc Rivers, known more as a tough defensive player during his playing days, has brought that has benefitted the Los Angeles Clippers the most this season.

The result is a Clippers team that is averaging almost 108 points per game this season versus less than 101 a year ago. When broken down into halves they are scoring 52.5 points and beating teams by an average of 4.1 in the second while only leading by an average of 2.9 points going into the half.

        Portland Trail Blazers

This comes as somewhat of a surprise as the Portland Trail Blazers aren’t considered to be a deep team. But when you look at a move the Blazers made in the offseason it shouldn’t be surprising.

That’s when they hired 26-year-old Dr. Chris Stackpole to replace longtime medical director Jay Jensen as the team’s top doctor. Stackpole is considered something of an up-and-coming star in athletic performance circles and when he was hired he overhauled the team’s entire fitness, conditioning, and rehabilitation setup.

The result is a team that had only lost 40 man-games to injury at the season’s halfway point (sixth lowest in the league) and a positive second-half margin of 3.6 points per game thanks to plenty of gas left in the tank in the final quarters.
