Game of the Day: Nets at Heat
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brooklyn Nets at Miami Heat (-9.5)

After halting a three-game losing streak last time out, the Miami Heat will look to extend its torrid pace at home when the Brooklyn Nets pay a visit on Wednesday. The Heat have won six straight on home court and only the Indiana Pacers (29-4) are more efficient in their own building than Miami (25-4) this season. After the Heat clinched a playoff spot in a 99-90 effort against Washington Monday, Dwyane Wade told reporters, "We needed this win. We're not used to losing three games in a row."

Brooklyn comes to town with six wins in its last seven games and an NBA-best 22-9 record in 2014. It's been more than six years, however, since the Nets won in Miami - an eight-game span that dates back to February, 2008 - but Brooklyn shouldn't lack confidence against the Heat, joining the Chicago Bulls as one of only two teams to top Miami twice this season. "Guys defensively have been together as one (and) sharing the ball," coach Jason Kidd told the New York Post of Brooklyn's recent success, adding, "It's been fun to watch."

          TV:
          7 p.m. ET, ESPN

          LINE HISTORY:
The Heat opened as 9-point faves before being bet up to -9.5.

          POWER RANKINGS:
          Nets (-7.0) - Heat (-14.5) + Home Court (-3.0) = Heat -10.5

          INJURY REPORT:
Nets - Kevin Garnett (Ques. Back), Andre Kirilenko (Ques - Ankle). Heat - Greg Oden (Prob. Rest)

          ABOUT THE NETS (32-30, 33-29-0 ATS, 30-28-4 O/U):
Brooklyn is riding high after knocking off the Atlantic Division-leading Toronto Raptors on Monday to pull within three games of the top spot in the division. Paul Pierce drained the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:14 to play against Toronto and noted a change in atmosphere around the team that the 16-year pro has seen on contending teams in the past. "It's that time of year, against a division rival. It definitely felt different," Pierce said.

          ABOUT THE HEAT (44-17 SU, 28-31-2 ATS, 34-27-0 O/U):
As Miami has struggled of late, so have the Eastern Conference-leading Indiana Pacers, whose concurrent four-game skid allowed the Heat to pull within a game of the top seed with Monday's win. Wade played in the second half of back-to-back games for just the third time this season against Washington, scoring 13 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter to lift Miami to victory. "I wanted to challenge myself," said Wade, who has routinely rested his knees this season, to the Miami Herald, before reiterating, "I would love to play every night but I'm still going to be smart."

          TRENDS:

          * Home team is 6-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings.
          * Under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings in Miami.
          * Favorite is 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
          * Nets are 4-9 ATS in the last 13 meetings.

          CONSENSUS:
52 percent of wagers are on the Nets.

Grizzlies taking hot Over streak into New Orleans

When the Memphis Grizzles travel to the Big Easy, they'll be looking to continue a great Over streak for bettors. The Grizz have gone Over in 10 of their last 11 games, with the one Under coming when their third-ranked defense clashed with Chicago's second-ranked D.

Memphis started the season constantly going Under do to their tough defense and low scoring offense, but books have started lower to O/U for Grizzlies games as of late. During those past 11 games, the Grizzlies average O/U total was 188.5 with only having a total greater than 190.

The current line for the Grizzles when they visit the New Orleans Pelicans is 191 Wednesday.

Bryant expected to sit out rest of season

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant will not return this season, according to multiple reports Wednesday.

Bryant has not played since Dec. 17 when he sustained a fractured lateral tibial plateau in his knee during a game against the Memphis Grizzlies. That injury occurred after he missed the first 19 games of the season during his recovery from a torn Achilles in his left leg from last April.

The 35-year-old Bryant was hoping to return from his latest injury in a month to six weeks, but the process has taken longer than expected. According to Bleacher Report, Bryant will be re-evaluated this week by Dr. Steve Lombardo.

Because of the injuries, Bryant will have played in only six games during the 2013-14 season. He averaged 13.8 points and 6.3 assists.

Without him, the Lakers have struggled to a 22-42 record. They have 18 games remaining in the regular season.

Bryant is expected to return to the Lakers next season after signing a two-year contract extension. Only five players on the current roster are under contract for 2014-15.

                    Santana, Braves agree to deal

After a being a bridesmaid all offseason, Ervin Santana is finally a bride. The Atlanta Braves signed the RHP to a one-year deal which, according to ESPN, is worth approximately $14 million.

Santana was heavily connected to both the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles over the past weeks, receiving contract offers from both teams and reportedly signing with the Jays earlier this week. The Braves rotation has been banged-up in Spring Training with Kris Medlen, Mike Minor and Brandon Beachy all injured.

Santana was 9-10 with a 3.24 ERA last season for the Kansas City Royals.

Braves GM Wren: Medlen has ligament damage

General manager Frank Wren said starter Kris Medlen has ligament damage and will be further evaluated Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury he incurred Sunday in the fourth inning of an exhibition game against the New York Mets.

"His MRI showed injury to the ligament, but don't yet know the extent," said Wren. "A diagnosis would be premature at this point, he will undergo further tests until we seek a second opinion."

Wren said players who have undergone previous arm surgeries, especially Tommy John ligament replacement, can yield inconclusive MRI results. Medlen had Tommy John surgery in 2010.

With two outs in the fourth inning Sunday, Medlen grabbed for his forearm and elbow after delivering his first pitch to Matt Clark. Manager Fredi Gonzalez came to the mound and detected immediately Medlen felt he was dealing with a serious injury.

"He wasn't in good spirits then. He was really, really worried," Gonzalez said.

Medlen, 28, is scheduled to be Atlanta's Opening Day starter. He was 15-12 last season with a 3.11 ERA and has a career ERA of 2.95 with a 34-20 record.

Sale to take the mound Opening Day for White Sox

To the surprise of no one, White Sox manager Robin Ventura confirmed that Chris Sale would be the clubs Opening Day starter.

Sale finished last season with an 11-14 record to go along with a 3.07 ERA and 226 SO. In Sale's last preseason outing he threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings and allowed only two hits against the Brewers.

The White Sox O/U win total for the upcoming season currently sits at 76.5 (over -105/under -115).

Bears cut Peppers, add DE Houston, S Mundy

General manager Phil Emery said the Chicago Bears' obvious and blantant focus in the offseason would be fixing a defense that struggled to get off the field in 2013.

Emery acted quickly Tuesday and, in the opening stages of free agency, signed defensive end Lamarr Houston, an unrestricted free agent from the Oakland Raiders who rated as one of Chicago's top priorities. He signed a five-year, $35 million contract with $15 million guaranteed and $21 million paid out over the first three years of the deal.

The Bears also re-signed linebacker D.J. Williams and signed free agent safety Ryan Mundy (New York Giants) to a two-year contract.

Houston's signing spelled the end of Julius Peppers' days in a Bears uniform, as the defensive end had his contract terminated hours later.

Chicago's marquee free agent addition in 2010, when Peppers signed a six-year, $84 million contract with $42 million guaranteed, Peppers is 34 and his production has steadily declined.

He ranks second in the NFL with 118.5 sacks since entering the league with the Carolina Panthers in 2002, and leads all defensive linemen during that span with nine interceptions. However, Peppers had only 7.0 sacks last season, his fewest since 2007 with Carolina.

Houston's contract is nearly identical in structure to the five-year, $35.9 million deal the Bears used to attract left tackle Jermon Bushrod on the first day of free agency last year.

Houston is 26 and has experience at right defensive end in the 4-3 and as a five-technique in a 3-4 defense.

The Bears also signed free agent linebacker Jordan Senn, a special teams standout from the Carolina Panthers, to a one-year contract.

Nevada's CG Technologies first to post 2014 NFL season win totals

Proving that it’s never too soon to start betting on football, CG Technologies – formerly known as Cantor Gaming – released 2014 NFL season win totals this past week – well ahead of the normal release date for the NFL futures in Nevada.

Most shops don’t post their NFL season win totals until later in the spring, usually after the free agency period and NFL Draft take place. Last year, the Atlantis sportsbooks in Reno, Nevada was the first book to post NFL season win totals in early May.

Who knows, maybe we'll have 2015 NFL season win totals before Super Bowl Sunday next February?

Here’s a look at the 2014 NFL season win totals from CG Technologies in Nevada:

Wisconsin-Milwaukee hits 20 ATS wins on the season

Very few teams have made it to 20 ATS victories this season – six to be exact, with Wisconsin-Milwaukee the latest to join the club. And the Panthers now might be worth a wager as they head to the NCAA Tournament.

The Panthers went off as 6.5-point underdogs to Wright State in Tuesday night’s Horizon League Tournament final, and came away with the outright 69-63 victory and the automatic NCAA bid. Wisconsin-Milwaukee (21-13 SU) improved to 20-12 ATS, 15th in the nation, joining Wichita State, Villanova, Cleveland State, Canisius and Portland among teams that have cashed for bettors 20 or more times this season.

The Panthers have won and covered five in a row now -- four from the underdog role, including all three of their Horizon League tourney games.
