Louisville routs UConn, claims share of AAC title

In a game that was billed as a matchup between two of the top guards in the nation, Louisville forward Montrezl Harrell stole the show.

With neither Russ Smith of Louisville nor Shabazz Napier of Connecticut having a productive scoring outing, Harrell got 20 points, 11 rebounds and three assists as the No. 11 Cardinals thumped No. 19 UConn 81-48 Saturday at the KFC Yum! Center.

Louisville (26-5, 15-3) claimed a share of the American Athletic Conference championship with No. 15 Cincinnati. A postgame coin flip went to Cincinnati and left Louisville with the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.

NOTES: Louisville tied with Cincinnati for the AAC title but lost a coin toss and is the No, 2 seed for the conference tourney, which begins Tuesday in Memphis. The Cardinals received a bye and will play the winner of the USF-Rutgers game in the second round on Thursday. ... UConn, the No, 4 seed, also received a bye and will play No. 5 seed Memphis on Thursday. ... Of being tied with Cincinnati for the conference title, Louisville coach Rick Pitino said: "I'm delighted to be tied with Mick Cronin's team." Cronin was an assistant to Pitino at Louisville. ... It was Senior Day as Louisville honored G Russ Smith, F Luke Hancock, C Stephan VanTreese and G Tim Henderson before the game. Those four represent the winningest class in school history with 131 wins (against 30 losses) and counting.

McDermott surpasses 3,000 points in Creighton's win

Creighton forward Doug McDermott joined college basketball's elite 3,000-point club on Saturday night.

The senior scored 45 points to raise his careeer total to 3,011 in the 13th-ranked Bluejays' 88-73 victory over Providence in Omaha, Neb.

McDermott became the eight player in men's Divison I basketball to reach the milestone. The two-time All-American got there when he sank a deep 3-point shot with 11:27 remaining in the Big East game for his 34th points of the game.

McDermott, the son of Creighton coach Greg McDermott, left the game with 1:13 remaining to a standing ovation from the record crowd of 18,868 at the CenturyLink Center.

The others to reach 3,000 career points are LSU's Pete Maravich (3,667), Portland State's Freeman Williams (3,249), La Salle's Lionel Simmons (3,217), Mississippi Valley State's Alphonso Ford (3,165), Texas Southern's Harry Kelly (3,066), Saint Peter's Keydren Clark (3,058) and Bradley's Hersey Hawkins (3,008).

Providence's Bryce Cotton, the Big East's second-leading scorer, had all of his 23 points in the second half

Wichita State third team ever to start 33-0

Nobody expected the Wichita State Shockers to be this dominant at the start of the season. The Shockers became only the third team in Men's D-1 history to start 33-0 with a 67-42 victory over Missouri State Saturday.

Wichita State joins the 90-91 UNLV and the 78-79 Indiana State teams as the only schools to go 33-0 in their season.

With the win Saturday, the Shockers move onto the MVC championships Sunday. Wichita State is currently +1000 to win the NCAA championships according to Williamhill.com.

76ers lose 16th straight, falling to Jazz

The Utah Jazz salvaged something from a long road trip Saturday night, at the expense of the NBA's second-worst team.

Guard-forward Gordon Hayward scored 22 points and guard Alec Burks added 19 off the bench as the Jazz beat the Philadelphia 76ers 104-92, extending the Sixers' losing streak to 16 games.

Burks' 3-pointer with 2:36 left snapped a 91-91 tie and Hayward added two three-point plays in the final minute as Utah (22-41) won the last game of a six-game trip. The Jazz had lost their previous six on the road in all and are now 8-25 away from home this season.

Forward Derrick Favors had 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Jazz, which scored 13 of the game's last 14 points. Backup center Enes Kanter contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Guard Tony Wroten made 12 of 15 shots from the field and had a career-high 30 points for the Sixers (15-47). Forward Thaddeus Young added 18 points.

Philadelphia's losing streak is its longest since a 20-game skid during the 1972-73 season when the Sixers finished 9-73. They have also dropped a franchise-record 13 in a row at home.

NOTES: Harvey Pollack, the 76ers' legendary director of statistical information, turns 92 on Sunday. He was saluted with a cake in the media room before the game and an announcement during the first half. ... Sixers coach Brett Brown said he has been impressed to date by the work of C Henry Sims, acquired in a trade two weeks ago from Cleveland. "He's got a toughness and I think an intellect, basketball-wise, that you see as time unfolds," Brown said. ... Jazz rookie PG Trey Burke is an Allen Iverson fan, and Utah coach Tyrone Corbin said he hopes Burke can adopt the same aggressive mindset as the retired Sixers star, who Corbin called "one of the toughest little guys" ever to play in the NBA. "But he has to practice," Corbin added with a smile, a reference to Iverson's famed rant about that topic, from more than a decade ago.

Quick, Kings league's best Under play

Any hockey bettor knows that the Los Angeles Kings are one of the best Under plays around, but they are on fire with Jonathan Quick between the pipes.

The Kings are tops in the league with a 16-33 Over/Under record this season, but are 0-5 O/U in Jonathan Quick's last five starts. The American netminder has allowed just four goals in his last five starts, which includes backstopping the Kings to a 3-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets Thursday night.

The Kings are in Edmonton to face the Oilers Sunday night.

Brodeur wants to play next season

Martin Brodeur wants to continue his Hall of Fame career next season. There was much speculation that the New Jersey Devils would trade Brodeur, who has spent his entire 20-plus year career with the Devils, at the deadline this season.

Brodeur told NJ.com that he "just to play more and have the chance to win the Stanley Cup. Be in the playoffs.” Brodeur, who guided the Devils to three Stanley Cups and has won four Veznia trophies while in their net, will be 42 at the start of next season.

Brodeur has started 30 games this season for the Devils, with a 15-11-4-3 record and a 2.49 GAA.

          Capitals sign top prospect Kuznetsov

The Washington Capitals signed top prospect Evgeny Kuznetsov to an entry-level contract Saturday.

The deal is for two years, according to CBC.

Kuznetsov, a center, could make his NHL debut on Monday when the Capitals play the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Capitals grabbed Kuznetsov with the No. 26 pick in the 2010 NHL draft. Many teams passed on him because they feared he may choose not to play in the league.

Kuznetsov turned heads in the IIHF World Junior Championship in 2011 with four goals and 11 points, including three assists in the third period of the gold-medal game to help Russia beat Canada 5-3.

He followed that up in the 2012 tournament with six goals and 13 points, even though Russia lost to Sweden in the gold-medal game.

Kuznetsov had 36 goals and 72 points in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons for Traktor Chelyabinsk in the Kontinental Hockey League.

Instead of joining the NHL after those two seasons, Kuznetsov re-upped with Traktor for two more seasons. After an injured plagued season, he was left off Team Russia in the Sochi Olympics and his KHL contract was terminated earlier this week.

Packers retain Shields with four-year deal

The Green Bay Packers re-signed cornerback Sam Shields to a four-year contract on Saturday.

According to ESPN, the $39 million deal includes a signing bonus of $12.5 million and pays out $30 million in the first three years: $15 million in the first season, $6 million in the second and $9 million in the third.

Shields' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed the news on Twitter: "Congrats to RSR client Sam Shields & the Green Bay Packers on the new contract!"

Shields had a breakout season after receiving from the Packers a restricted free-agent tender of $2.023 million in 2013. He finished with a career-high four interceptions and had 61 tackles in 14 games.

It was thought that Shields, a wide receiver in college at Miami, would test the free-agent market beginning next week after the two sides could not reach an agreement on a new contract and the Packers had decided against placing a franchise tag on him.

According to CBSSports.com rankings, Shields would have been considered the sixth-best free agent cornerback available during the offseason. He will be entering his fifth NFL season in 2014.

            Buccaneers cut Joseph

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers cut right guard Davin Joseph, the team announced Saturday.

The team made the move after trying to trade him, according to multiple reports.

Joseph, 30, was set to make $6 million this year, but is instead a salary-cap casualty.

"Decisions like this are never easy when it comes to parting ways with players such as Davin," general manager Jason Licht said in a statement. "We thank Davin for his contributions on and off the field during his eight years in Tampa Bay and we wish him well in the future. Every decision we make during this time leading up to free agency is with the intention of improving our roster and building towards becoming a championship team once again."

After missing the 2012 season because of knee surgery, Pro Football Focus ranked Joseph 80th among 81 qualifying guards last year.

The former first-round draft pick started 99 of 100 games played in eight seasons with Tampa Bay.

The Buccaneers were nearly $19 million under the cap before parting with Joseph. They will have plenty of money to spend as they enter the free-agent market Tuesday with major questions at offensive line.

Joseph joined the Buccaneers as a first-round draft pick in 2006 and played eight seasons with the team. He is a two-time Pro Bowler.

Jaguars agree to terms with DE Bryant

The Jacksonville Jaguars agreed to terms on a four-year contract with former Seattle Seahawks defensive end Red Bryant on Saturday, according to multiple reports.

Bryant has 87 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and two interceptions in the past three seasons and 121 tackles over six years in Seattle.

The Seahawks, who drafted Bryant in the fourth round in 2008, released him on Feb. 28. He was due $4.5 million this season and a $3 million bonus if he was on the team's roster on March 14.

Jaguars coach Gus Bradley coached Bryant when he was Seattle's defensive coordinator

                          Mattingly: Kemp closer to return

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Saturday that outfielder Matt Kemp is close to returning from offseason ankle surgery.

Kemp has yet to play in a spring training game this year.

The star outfielder has been running and tracking fly balls in the outfield.

Even though Kemp will not play in the Dodgers' regular-season opener in Australia, Mattingly believes he is progressing well.

"We're seeing him take fly balls, getting jumps," Mattingly said, according to MLB.com. "He's swinging the bat good. It won't be long before he's in a game."

The Dodgers leave for Australia on March 16. Mattingly said he is not sure if Kemp will appear in a Cactus League game by then. The Dodgers play the Arizona Diamondbacks in a two-game series March 22-23.

"I don't put that kind of timetable on it," Mattingly said. "As long as he's moving forward."

Kemp batted .270 with a career-low six home runs in just 73 games last year. He had left ankle surgery in October.

The 29-year-old signed an eight-year, $160 million contract after the 2011 season. However, he has played just 179 games in those two years.

Hamilton to return “within a week or so"

Josh Hamilton, who has been sidelined for almost two weeks with a calf strain, is expected to be back in the Angels lineup soon.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia told the LA Times that Hamilton will start batting practice Sunday and should return “within a week or so."

Hamilton batted .250 with 21 HR and 79 RBI last season with the Angels.

Lane violation helps Bucks backdoor cover vs. Wizards

It looked like the Washington Wizards were easily going to cover the 8-point spread Saturday night in their 114-107 win over Milwaukee, before the Bucks stormed back and combined with a series of strange calls, pulled out a backdoor cover.

Bucks' guard Brandon Knight hit a layup with seven seconds left to make the score 114-105. He then fouled Wizards' forward Trevor Ariza who missed his first free throw, then Martel Webster was called for a lane violation on the second. Milwaukee's Zaza Pachulia then made a layup with less then a second to go, giving the Bucks the cover by a single point.

The Wizards led by a score of 71-43 in the second quarter, but Washington only scored 10 points in the third.
