    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- I just realized I'm not going to be able to see the Pac-12 tournament due to DirecTV not carrying the Pac-12 Network. I have five soccer channels, no Pac-12 Network. Oy.

-- Johnny Manziel signed an endorsement deal with Nike; ESPN's mock draft has him going 4th to Cleveland, though the Browns didn't interview Manziel at the NFL Combine.

-- Loyola 74, Bradley 72-- Milton Doyle drained a long 3 at the buzzer to send the Ramblers on to play Indiana State Friday night.

-- Mercer 78, SC-Upstate 75, 2ot-- #2 seed Bears survived at home, play #1 seed Florida Gulf Coast in conference final Sunday in Fort Myers.

-- All four teams tied for first in C-USA won Thursday, so did UTEP, so top five teams are separated by one game, with one game left to play.

-- Michigan State 86, Iowa 76-- Hawkeyes are 4-6 in their last 10 games.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.....

    13) John Calipari has created a monster at Kentucky, a program where there is a lot of player turnover every year and he has a roster full of NBA wanna-bes who don’t wanna-be in college very long.

That gives Kentucky a younger team than most of its opponents, albeit often more talented, but its hard to cultivate any type of chemistry when you have new stars every year. A team made up of less talented, smarter, more mature players will often beat the Kentucky model of team. Just the way it is.

    12) Underrated bad job: driving a tractor trailer making deliveries in an inner city, say a beer truck or Coca-Cola or Dunkin Donuts. Not much room to navigate and when you do park the truck, it often screws up traffic while you’re making the delivery. Not something I’d like to do.

    11) Two Dodger-Arizona games in Australia on March 22-23 will not have instant replay available. Why I’m not sure; they don’t have cellphones in Australia? Doesn’t seem like it would be that hard to orchestrate, but they’re not doing it.

    10) Adrian Peterson wants the Vikings to sign Michael Vick as their starting QB; wonder what the reaction will be if that doesn’t happen. Now we know why Matt Cassel opted out of his Viking deal.

    9) Syracuse used two subs in its loss to Georgia Tech Tuesday; they played total of 37:00, had 4 points, 5 rebounds, no assists, 8 fouls, not a strong contribution. If Grant’s back doesn’t get well soon, he’s going to have a long spring/summer to get ready for next season, because Orange aren’t beating anyone good without him.

    8) Golden State Warriors are in top 6 in NBA in terms of pace of play and in top 10 in defense; they’re the only team that can say that.

    7) For what its worth, the SATs are going back to the 1,600 scoring scale, so this is where I explain to you what a farce the SATs are.

Back in the day, the mid-70’s to be exact, I scored a 1,320 on my SAT and I took them with strep throat- the miserable human who proctored my exam wouldn’t let me take cough drops out of my pocket, once the test started.

Whatever, I got lucky on a test, it paid for my college education and made people think I was some stellar student. Uh huh.

    6) In reality, I graduated U of Albany with a 2.28 GPA marked mostly by spending ridiculous amounts of time watching game shows on TV (this was just before ESPN came to be), eating tuna subs, playing pickup basketball.

The SAT is not an indicator of who will be a good student, and I’m living proof of it, but I’m glad it existed—saved me a lot of money.

    5) Someone refresh my memory why Donnie Walsh left the Knicks; why would they let a guy like him leave? You think they could get better if they had a real sharp GM, but they had one and he bolted, so it doesn’t look good for their future now, does it?

    4) Good move by college football gurus, allowing the 15-yard targeting penalty to be overturned after the replay review. Last year’s rule was so inflexible, it just didn't make a lot of sense.

    3) Why is the MAAC tournament in Springfield? There are 11 teams in this mid-major league; none of them in Massachusetts; sometimes educated people can make some really unusual decisions.

My take: MAAC tournament only makes money when it is held in Albany, but schools were annoyed that Siena had the advantage having the tourney at home all the time, so they move it around.

    2) Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall has to be happy every time a TV guru bashes the Shockers’ schedule; you just know he’s pushing the “us against them” mentality and the “no respect” card. Truth is, Wichita was in the Final Four last year and they’re going to be there again this year.

    1) We’ve said this before, but all of these college teams are extremely fragile in terms of depth/chemistry; look at how Syracuse/Wisconsin/Ohio State have had extended downturns.

One injury, one key guy in a slump and things go sour. Lot of good players in the country, but 341 D-I teams give scholarships, so not many teams have real quality depth—who wants to sit on the bench?

Teams are fragile; remember that as we go thru March.

American League Central preview: Race between Tigers and Royals

The American League Central might be a two-team race between Detroit and Kansas City, unless Chicago or Cleveland takes a step up this season. It appears Minnesota is still a year or two away from contention.

Chicago White Sox (63-99, -32.18 units)

      Division odds: +800
      Season win total: 76

Why bet the White Sox: Chris Sale is becoming an ace in the starting rotation. Chicago also has two other southpaws in the rotation with Jose Quintana and John Danks. The White Sox can really give trouble to teams that struggle against left-handed pitching. Jose Abreu has arrived from Cuba and has the talent to help an offensive lineup that struggled at times last season

Why not bet the White Sox: The bottom of the pitching rotation is a huge question mark. The bullpen is also suspect with Nate Jones at a closer. The offense revolves around Adam Dunn, who struck out 189 times last season. Gordon Beckham is no longer a power hitter and the rest of the lineup is highly unreliable.

Season win total pick: Under 76 wins

      Cleveland Indians (92-70, +24.92 units)

      Division odds: +650
      Season win total: 80.5

Why bet the Indians: Cleveland has a solid 1-2 punch in its starting rotation with Justin Masterson and Danny Salazar. Salazar proved himself worthy enough to pitch in the team's playoff game against the Rays last season. The offensive lineup is solid with Jason Kipnis and Carlos Santana manning the middle.

Why not bet the Indians: The rest of the pitching rotation is mediocre with Corey Kluber, Zach McAllister and Josh Tomlin most likely rounding things out. The bullpen is a mess with John Axford trying to hold down the closer spot. He has struggled the past two seasons and has not pitched well since 2011. The bench is aging and will not help an offensive lineup that failed to score consistently last year.

Season win total pick: Under 80.5 wins

      Detroit Tigers (93-69, -11.50 units)

      Division odds: -275
      Season win total: 90

Why bet the Tigers: Despite trading away Doug Fister, the Tigers still have one of the best pitching rotations in the league. Even when Justin Verlander was not at his best last year, Max Scherzer stepped up and become the team's ace. Anibal Sanchez and Rick Porcello man the third and fourth positions of the rotation with Drew Smyly getting the fifth spot. Miguel Cabrera is back for another year as the two-time defending MVP. Victor Martinez provides protection and should post better numbers than last season.

Why not bet the Tigers: There are still question marks in the bullpen. Joe Nathan is an upgrade at the closer position, but he is now one of the oldest players in the league at 39 years of age. There is a lot of uncertainty and question marks in the middle relief spot. Can Bruce Rondon finally pitch to his potential? Offensively, Ian Kinsler has some big shoes to fill as the Tigers traded away Prince Fielder.

Season win total pick: Over 90 wins

Kansas City Royals (86-76, +6.36 units)

      Division odds: +650
      Season win total: 82

Why bet the Royals: The rotation has improved with Jason Vargas stepping in. The lefty is on his third team in three years, but he will now have a strong defense behind him. Greg Holland was incredible as the closer last year, giving up just 40 hits in 67 innings pitched. Billy Butler and Alex Gordon now have help in the lineup with Omar Infante batting ahead of them. Infante will get on base, while the two big sluggers bring him in.

Why not bet the Royals: Mike Moustakas has still not lived up to his potential. Alcides Escobar hit only .234 last year, but he will continue to be in the lineup because he is strong defensively. The bottom of the pitching rotation is shaky with Danny Duffy and Wade Davis among those vying for the final spots, although this will be less of a weakness if Yordano Ventura gets the job.

Season win total pick: Over 82 wins

      Minnesota Twins (66-96, -7.12 units)

      Division odds: +3,000
      Season win total: 70.5

Why bet the Twins: It is hard to find reasons to back the Twins. They do still have one of the best hitters in the league with Joe Mauer, plus Josh Willingham will provide good protection in a lineup. They are trying to fill the holes in the pitching rotation with veterans Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes who have pitched well in the past. Glen Perkins is an All-Star closer who converted on 90 percent of his save opportunities last year.

Why not bet the Twins: Minnesota's pitching rotation had a horrendous 5.26 ERA last season. Kevin Correia and Scott Diamond were among that group of misfits. Miguel Sano is out for the season with Tommy John surgery. While Perkins is an excellent closer, he might not get many chances with a poor starting rotation and awful middle relief that is likely to blow leads.

Season win total pick: Under 70.5 wins

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Capping college basketball's tightest conference races
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The final weekend of the NCAAB regular season is finally upon us and many major conferences are still sorting out their pecking order before the postseason tournaments begin.

Basketball bettors can find added value in these teams either trying to grab to top seed in the conference or improve their current one. Here are a few tight conference races to cap this weekend:

              American Athletic Conference

              Cincinnati at Rutgers (Saturday)
              UConn at Louisville (Saturday)

The inaugural AAC regular season title is likely going to be decided on the final day of the season as Cincinnati and Louisville wrap up the year to see which former Big East school will grab top spot.

Cincinnati first has to win a tough game against Memphis at home Thursday, but has the much easier path playing lowly Rutgers Saturday. The Cardinals will need to beat out Shabazz Napier and the Huskies on Senior Night.

              ACC

              Syracuse at Florida State (Sunday)
              North Carolina at Duke (Saturday)

With Virginia clinching the ACC title last weekend, the most intriguing race left in the conference is the weekend battle for the No. 2 seed in the ACC tournament. Syracuse and UNC are tied for second, but Duke can sneak into to the No. 2 spot with a win over UNC and a Syracuse loss to Florida State Sunday.

              Big 12

              Oklahoma at TCU (Saturday)
              Texas at Texas Tech (Saturday)

Rivals Texas and Oklahoma both hope the other school chokes its way out of a tie for the No. 2 seed in the Big 12 Saturday. Both schools walk into Senior Night games on the road in spots where they’re expected to win.

Oklahoma plays last-place TCU while the Longhorns take on lowly Texas Tech. If one of the two gets upset it is likely there will be an outright No. 2 seed and no tiebreakers necessary.

              Mountain West Conference

New Mexico at San Diego State (Saturday)

In arguably the biggest game on Saturday's card, New Mexico and San Diego State will settle the regular season outright title. The Lobos head to one of the toughest gyms in the nation to try to spoil the Aztecs party on Senior Night.

With both tied for first in the MWC and both in the Top 25, expect a hard-fought game after the Lobos won by 14 points at home in the first meeting of the year between these mid-major giants.

              Big Ten

              Wisconsin at Nebraska (Sunday)
Michigan State at Ohio State (Sunday)

Wisconsin and Michigan State are clawing for the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten tournament and have to earn big wins in enemy territory to do so Sunday. The Badgers travel to Nebraska where the Cornhuskers have lost just once all season while the Spartans try to top the Buckeyes on Aaron Craft's Senior Night.

There’s a chance both teams could lose Sunday. But with a shot at better seed in the postseason, both schools are out to ruin some seniors’ big moment at home with convincing wins before the conference tournament tips off.

Game of the Day: Pacers at Rockets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Pacers at Houston Rockets (-3, 203)

The Indiana Pacers will try to avoid their first three-game losing streak of the season Friday night when they visit the Houston Rockets, owners of the NBA’s best record since Jan. 1. The Pacers are coming off Wednesday’s humbling loss to the host Charlotte Bobcats, a night after they fell to the visiting Golden State Warriors, and leading scorer Paul George had his worst shooting performance as a pro, missing all nine field-goal attempts and scoring two points against the Bobcats.

Houston improved to 21-6 in 2014 with a 101-89 win Wednesday at the Orlando Magic, a night after knocking off the two-time defending champion Miami Heat. The Pacers struggled to defend the interior against Charlotte and could run into similar problems against the Dwight Howard-led Rockets, who outscored the Magic 58-26 in the paint. Howard outplayed Indiana center Roy Hibbert when these teams met Dec. 20 in Indianapolis, but the Pacers won 114-81 to end their only other two-game losing streak this season.

They were 33-7 following a win at Golden State on Jan. 20 but have since hit two patches where they lost three of five and now dropped two straight, drawing the Heat within 1 ½ games of the top spot in the East. George told reporters after the Charlotte loss that he was unusually sore, and second-leading scorer Lance Stephenson appeared to be favoring his groin during the game and failed to reach his 14.1 scoring average for the third straight game.

                      ABOUT HOUSTON (42-19 SU, 32-27-2 ATS, 29-30-2 O/U):
James Harden has started the month of March about as well as can be expected. He had his first back-to-back games with at least 20 points and 10 assists to start the month and came back with 31 points and six assists against the Magic. George and the Pacers gave him problems in their last meeting, however, holding him to 12 points on 3-for-14 shooting, but it was later learned that Harden played on a bad ankle, which kept him out of the next two games.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Pacers are 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.
                      * Pacers are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings in Houston.
                      * Under is 16-7 in the last 23 meetings.

                        NBA

                        Friday, March 7

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What these NBA contenders need to do to beat Heat, OKC
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NBA observers would likely agree the Miami Heat and the Oklahoma City Thunder are the favorites to win their respective conferences and compete for the right to hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

And, according to the NBA oddsmakers, that’s true. Miami is priced as a +175 favorite to win the NBA title with Oklahoma City right behind it at +350.

There are several other NBA teams who would disagree, however. We look at four of those outlining contenders and pinpoint just what they need to improve on in the final quarter of the season to keep up to – and surpass – the Heat and Thunder.

San Antonio Spurs (+1,100 to win the NBA title)

The Spurs just keep getting it done, year after year. And, lo and behold, they are at it again, sitting just 1.5 games back of OKC for top spot in the West.

They are 6-1 SU since the break and are finally healthy. Not only does this mean they have their best players able to play but they are also able to rest the likes of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili without having to blow the cobwebs off the 10th, 11th and 12th guys on the bench.

They need to just continue doing what they’ve been doing. Over their last three games, the Spurs’ assist-to-turnover ratio is a league-leading 31. They’re rebounding at a tremendous rate on the defensive end and executing efficiently on the offensive end. These are exactly the things that get you the wins in the postseason and if the Spur continue playing like this until the end of the season it wouldn’t be wise to bet against them.

                        Los Angeles Clippers (+1,200)

The Los Angeles Clippers may have quietly become the Western Conference’s most likely challenger to the Thunder. Since the All-Star break, they are 5-2 SU and ATS and have recorded impressive road wins over the likes of OKC, Houston, and Phoenix. Blake Griffin is playing at first-team, All-Star level and Chris Paul is rounding into form after a spell on the sidelines.

But they still rely too much on the fastbreak, sitting third in the league with almost 18 points per game, while sitting in the middle of the pack in points in the paint with 41.2. They just don’t seem to have that one shooting guard or small forward who can put the whole package together. New addition and oft-injured SF Danny Granger is working his way into the lineup and if L.A can figure out that role then the Clips can make some noise.

                        Indiana Pacers (+200)

The Pacers are currently in top spot in the Eastern Conference but are in a dogfight to see off the Miami Heat for home-court throughout the playoffs.

They are just 6-3 SU (2-7-1 ATS) since the All-Star break and just lost to the Charlotte Bobcats 109-87 as 4.5-point favorites. Unfortunately this is just the type of game the Pacers will see in the postseason - a slower grind - and people think Indiana may have trouble in a seven-game series playing this kind of basketball.

Indiana needs better play from its All-Stars Paul George and Roy Hibbert, who have struggled since the break. What’s more, they’ll need more consistent production from Lance Stephenson, who has failed to consistently perform over his season averages in points, rebounds, and assists in the majority of games since coming back from the All-Star layoff. Evan Turner may yet fill the gap if Stephenson (or George) is in a slump. But he’s unproven in the postseason.

                        Chicago Bulls (+5,000)

Not many would’ve put the Chicago Bulls on this list even a month ago. But, as is always the case, head coach Tom Thibodeau has them playing stingy defense and Joakim Noah has elevated his game to that of, perhaps, the best center in the league right now.

But we’ve seen this before and it usually ends up with the Bulls putting up a valiant effort against one of the Eastern Conference heavyweights in the playoffs before going down in five or six games. What this team needs to show before being a realistic contender is the ability to score the big bucket.

The Bulls are the third-worst team in offensive efficiency in the league with only .981 points per possession and average 18 points per game from behind the arc, which is fourth lowest. If you see these numbers start to climb, which they have recently, Chicago may just be a sleeper in the East.

NHL trade deadline deals with the biggest betting impact
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NHL trade deadline saw the usual flurry of activity and several big names changing addresses. It was certainly one of the most star-studded deadlines in recent memory.

Bettors should take special interest in a handful of notable deals that took place prior to Wednesday's 3 p.m. ET deadline, as those moves could have a major impact on totals, moneylines, or both. Whether adding pieces or jettisoning key players, several teams will sport new looks as the regular season nears the home stretch.

Here's a look at the four deals with the biggest potential betting impact moving forward:

New York Rangers acquire F Martin St. Louis from Tampa Bay Lightning for F Ryan Callahan and two draft picks

The first deal of the day was also one of the most stunning, as St. Louis was sent packing despite being the reigning Art Ross Trophy winner. The trade gives the Rangers' offense an immediate boost, with St. Louis now the centerpiece of an offense already boasting Rick Nash, Mike Richards and Derek Stepan. Expect to see the Rangers as favorites more often, and don't be surprised to see the totals tick upwards as St. Louis becomes accustomed to his new surroundings.

Buffalo Sabres trade F Matt Moulson and G Jaroslav Halak in separate deals

Buffalo officially became Tank City after the Sabres parted with two of their biggest remaining assets - both of whom had actually been acquired earlier in the season. The departure of Moulson, a top-flight goal scorer, and Halak, a No. 1 netminder, all but ensures that the Sabres are playing for a cushy spot in the draft lottery. Expect the moneylines to plunge on Buffalo from here on out, with the totals dipping slightly due to Moulson's departure.

Montreal Canadiens acquire F Thomas Vanek from New York Islanders for F Sebastien Collberg

Few thought Vanek would remain in the Eastern Conference, but with the asking price dropping by the minute, Montreal swooped in just before the deadline and landed the Austrian star for a reasonable price. While Vanek may not threaten the 40-goal plateau anymore, he remains a solid offensive option on a team that is desperate for offense. His arrival should the Montreal moneylines a coupe cents but shouldn't have a major impact on the total - at least, not initially.

Edmonton Oilers trade F Ales Hemsky and D Nick Schultz in separate deals

It may appear that the Oilers are following the Sabres' blueprint, but the truth is, they've written the book on late-season fire sales. This year, Edmonton found a taker for the injury-prone Hemsky while making room for its influx of young blueliners by swapping Schultz to Columbus. With a trio of draft picks but no live bodies coming back in return, the Oilers are thinner up front and on defense - developments that could make them even bigger plus-money underdogs moving forward.
