Marian Hossa, Chicago - Doub Tues

Hossa left Saturday's game against the Penguins with an upper body injury. He is not expected to play Tuesday against the Avalanche.

All eight games go over the total Sunday

Goalies might have take the day off Sunday as a gluttony of goals were scored yesterday in NHL action, resulting in all eight games going over the game total.

Games going over the game total has been a strong trend the last seven days, with teams compiling a 25-13 over/under record, hitting at a mark of almost 66 percent.

Which NBA refs should basketball bettors keep an eye on?
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the big stories coming out of the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference was the advanced statistics used to track NBA referees.

The ability to record which refs call what fouls and which point in the game is valuable information for NBA players, coaches, GMs and, of course, NBA bettors. Even Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban chimed in on the benefits of advanced referee statistics at the conference in Boston this weekend.

"Anything that can influence the outcome of a game is important," Cuban said. "I wanted to be aware of each official's skill set to the best of our ability, so if somebody happens to call three seconds more often than another, someone else calls more falls than another, it can and sometimes does influence our game planning."

If you’ve been handicapping basketball for a while, you know that taking at look at which refs are more trigger happy – or should we say whistle happy - than others can give you a real edge when looking to bet NBA totals. A ref who makes a lot of calls tends to lean towards the Over, with more free throws and time stopped for those fouls.

Handicapping NBA officials is not as proven a practice as factoring home plate umpires into your MLB wagers. But with the expanding analytical tools used to track professional sports, it may reveal some prominent trends and patterns that could benefit whoever – teams, coaches, bettors – has access to them.

Our NBA referee statistics don’t go as in depth as those discussed at the Sloan conference, but they do let you know which officials have been siding with the home team more often than not, and also which ones have helped influence and Over and the Under the most.

Here’s a quick look our NBA referee statistics as of Sunday’s action:

        Best NBA home refs

        - Sean Corbin (28-17-0 ATS)
        - Mike Callahan (27-18-1 ATS)
        - James Williams (21-13-2 ATS)

        Best NBA road refs

        - Tony Brown (12-31-1 ATS)
        - Matt Boland (15-31-0 ATS)
        - Scott Foster (15-30-2 ATS)

        Best NBA Over refs

        - Eric Lewis (37-11 O/U)
        - Tom Washington (30-16 O/U)
        - Michael Smith (29-17 O/U)

        Best NBA Under refs

        - Ron Garretson (14-27 O/U)
        - Tre Maddox (11-22 O/U)
        - Rodney Mott (18-27 O/U)

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bank Shots: NBA's weekly betting news and notes
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Feb. 24-March 2.

Hottest ATS - Los Angeles Clippers (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS)

Lob City is alive and well, as the Clippers rode the momentum of a big win in Oklahoma City to an unbeaten week. Los Angeles opened with a 123-110 victory in New Orleans, then returned home and clamped down on defense in back-to-back triumphs over the Houston Rockets and Pelicans. The strong bounceback following an 0-3 ATS stretch will be put to the test Wednesday as the Clippers visit a Phoenix Suns team that remains one of the top surprises in the league.

Coldest ATS - New Orleans Pelicans (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS)

Injuries to Ryan Anderson and Jrue Holiday have finally caught up to the Pelicans, who suffered four straight double-digit losses as their overall skid reached seven. In addition to a pair of losses to the Clippers, New Orleans fell 108-89 in Dallas and 116-104 in Phoenix to drop to 0-3 over their five-game road trip. With Holiday out for the season and Anderson still without a timetable, things could get even uglier in the Big Easy as the team's depth continues to be tested.

Best Over play - Milwaukee Bucks (1-2 SU, 3-0 O/U)

With nothing left to play for but a prime spot in the NBA draft lottery, the Bucks have become a strong Over play. Last week opened with one of the biggest shootouts so far this season - a 130-110 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers - and ended with a narrow loss to the Indiana Pacers and a nine-point defeat against Brooklyn. Milwaukee's offense has improved over the past month, while the defense remains mediocre - so expect plenty more Overs down the stretch.

Best Under play - Portland Trail Blazers (3-0 SU, 0-3 O/U)

So much for owning one of the NBA's worst defenses. The Trail Blazers overcame an injury to power forward LaMarcus Aldridge, then continued to roll in his return late last week as they stretched both their winning and Under streaks to five games with a pair of victories over the Denver Nuggets and a win over the Brooklyn Nets. Portland has held opponents below 100 points in five straight games, showing off a new-found commitment commitment to defense.

                Surveying the schedule

The Minnesota Timberwolves are running out of time in their quest to snag one of the final Western Conference playoff spots. The Timberwolves open the week in 10th place in the conference, a full 5 1/2 games back of the eighth-place Dallas Mavericks with just 24 games remaining. Minnesota, which received a major boost with the returns of center Nikola Pekovic and guard Kevin Martin, play in Denver on Monday before kicking off a four-game homestand against New York.

Three NCAAB teams looking to play late-season spoiler
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With one week left in the NCAAB regular season, plenty of teams are still hoping to punch their tournament ticket. There are also many programs not going dancing this March - baring a improbable run in the conference tournament.

Those team outside the NCAA picture can either pack it in or fight to the finish, and the ones that do choose to keep battling love to take on the role of spoiler against conference foes on the tournament bubble.

Here are a few schools that can play spoiled sports this week:

Seton Hall Pirates (14-15, 14-14 ATS)

                  Opponent: Xavier (Monday)

Seton Hall has been inconsistent this season, even with the thinning of the Big East. But the Pirates do have a 68-60 road win over Xavier and will be looking to finish their season above .500 with two games left on the schedule.

With Xavier riding a huge weekend win over Creighton, that likely earned it a spot in the tournament, this could be a letdown spot for a Musketeers team that had problems stopping Seton Hall during their February loss.

Illinois Fighting Illini (17-12, 12-12-4 ATS)

                  Opponent: Michigan (Tuesday)

Riding a three-game win streak, including a big win over Michigan State Saturday, the Fighting Illini have improved their tournament resume drastically over the past week. Their big win on the weekend also helped their opponent Michigan move up to a two-game lead in the Big Ten, meaning the Wolverines can clinch the outright conference title with a win on Tuesday.

That will be easier said than done as the Illini look to make it four wins in a row on Senior Night over the Big Ten leaders and continue to build up their tournament chances.

                  Mississippi Rebels (17-12, 10-12-3 ATS)

                  Opponent: Arkansas (Wednesday)

After Marshall Henderson picked up a suspension and an arrest during the offseason, Ole Miss looked like it would have no chance at repeating its magical 2013 run. But Ole Miss is still fighting, despite just two wins in its last seven games, going 4-2-1 ATS in that span.

The Rebels are likely out of the NCAA picture unless they can make a serious run in the conference tournament. With a 12-point win over Arkansas under their belts and a chance to ruin the Razorbacks' Senior Night, expect Henderson & Co. to embrace the spoiler role down the stretch.

This week's best NBA spot bet opportunities
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Letdown spot

Golden State began a six-game East Coast road trip in Detroit last Monday night. Its grueling trip will end on in Boston Wednesday night. But the Warriors will play a big game the night before in Indiana against the Pacers. That is a huge game for Golden State, as it's coming off a loss in Toronto, and will be playing with revenge after losing at home to the Pacers in late January.

The Warriors will return home after playing in Boston, and if Golden State wins in Indiana, the game against the Celtics will come in a major letdown spot. The Celtics have three full days off to prepare for the Warriors, who will be playing its ninth game over a 15-day stretch.

                    Lookahead spot

Houston will play four games this week, beginning at home versus Miami Tuesday and finishing at home versus Portland Sunday. Three of the Rockets' four opponents are Class-A teams: Heat, Pacers, and Blazers. The Rockets’ lone road game this week comes in Orlando Wednesday.

The Rockets will play that game on a back-to-back set after hosting the Heat. Houston will have no interest in traveling and playing in Orlando, especially since they’ll return home right after to face Indiana and Portland. The Rockets will surely be looking ahead to those games while going through the motions in Orlando.

                    Schedule spot

The Los Angeles Lakers have the toughest schedule in the NBA this week. They will play five games with their only days off being Wednesday and Saturday. The Lakers began the week in Portland Monday before hosting back-to-back home games against the Pelicans and Clippers. Thursday night they’ll be in Denver before concluding the week with a home game against Oklahoma City Sunday.

The Lakers’ trouble spot will be against the Nuggets Thursday night. They will go into that game on a back-to-back set, and it will also be their fourth game in five nights. Los Angeles’ fatigue will be magnified in the thin air and altitude of Denver. The Nuggets have the previous night off, so the Lakers are simply in a terrible scheduling spot for their game in Denver.

                      Letdown spot

The Ottawa Senators had little trouble bouncing back from a drubbing at the hands of the Red Wings, rallying to post a 4-2 victory over the Canucks in the Heritage Classic on Sunday afternoon.

Now comes the letdown. The Sens head east from Van-City for a stop in Edmonton to face the lowly Oilers on Tuesday night. Edmonton will have no shortage of motivation, having lost three games in a row. The Oilers last win came nearly a month ago, in New York back on February 6th.

Keep in mind, the Oilers won the previous meeting between these two teams back on October 19th in Ottawa.

                      Lookahead spot

The Boston Bruins suffered a 4-2 home loss to the Washington Capitals on Saturday afternoon, but they'll get another shot at Ovie and company later this week, once again in Beantown.

Before that, the B's will host the Florida Panthers in a clear lookahead spot on Tuesday night. While the Panthers have struggled for much of the season, they're no easy out. Note that they have posted 12 road victories this season, and they're coming off an uplifting come-from-behind 5-3 win on Long Island on Sunday.

                      Schedule spot

Montreal heads west for a difficult four-game road trip beginning Monday night in Los Angeles. However, the worst spot on the trip will come later in the week, when the Canadiens play on the second of back-to-back nights. After taking on the Ducks in Anaheim on Wednesday, the Habs will travel to face the Coyotes in the desert on Thursday.

Phoenix doesn't exactly head into the new week on a high note, having lost three straight games. A return home should help. The 'Yotes are 17-10-3 in Glendale this season. Montreal has been solid away from home, but finds itself in the wrong place at the wrong time here.

Pucking the Trends: NHL's weekly betting news and notes
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Feb. 24-March 2.

                        Hot team

                        Los Angeles Kings (3-0 SU)

It looks like the Kings have caught fire at the perfect time as teams jockey for position in the crowded Western Conference standings. Los Angeles opened the post-Olympic week with a 6-4 victory over the Colorado Avalanche, then showed off its defensive chops with a 2-0 triumph over the Calgary Flames and a 3-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Jonathan Quick appears to have bounced back nicely from his Olympic disappointment, while the offense is deep and potent.

                        Cold team

                        Carolina Hurricanes (0-4 SU)

The Hurricanes were the exact opposite, coming out of the two-week break with no jump at all. Entering a pivotal stretch as it looks to challenge for an Eastern Conference wild-card spot, Carolina fell flat in the first four games of a five-game road trip, dropping decisions in Buffalo, Dallas, Los Angeles and Anaheim to slip to fourth-last in the conference. The team's top scorers are struggling, with winger Jeff Skinner still looking for his first point since the resumption of play.

                        Best Over play

                        Boston Bruins (3-0 O/U)

It was a barrage of high-scoring games as defenses struggle to keep up with opposing goal scorers - and the Bruins benefited from it to emerge as one of the strongest Over choices of the week. Boston resumed its charge toward the top seed in the East with a thud, dropping a 5-4 overtime decision to the Sabres and falling 4-2 to Washington - but bounced back nicely to beat the Rangers 6-3. Expect lower scores as goalie Tuukka Rask and the Boston defense sharpen up.

                        Best Under play

                        St. Louis Blues (1-2 O/U)

There weren't many good Under candidates last week, but the Blues fit the bill. They lost consecutive 1-0 decisions in Vancouver and Anaheim, and were less than two minutes from a third straight under before scoring the last of four third-period goals en route to a 4-2 victory over Phoenix. Armed with one of the top defenses in the league and having traded for elite goaltender Ryan Miller, expect St. Louis to remain a strong Under play for the remainder of the season.

                        Surveying the schedule

Eastern Conference teams dread having to make the trip through three time zones - and now, it's the Montreal Canadiens' turn. Montreal sits second in the conference behind only the rival Bruins, but the lead on the rest of the contenders is tenuous - and will be put to the test as the Canadiens embark on a four-game West Coast trip that begins Monday in Los Angeles. Montreal, 16-12-2 on the road this season, will also visit Anaheim, Phoenix and San Jose on the trek.

Take the money and run: Biggest betting streaks

                          ATS winning streak

                          Los Angeles Clippers

Doc Rivers wanted no part of Boston’s rebuilding and has hit the jackpot in Los Angeles, where his Clippers are hitting their stride as they begin the final 25 percent of the schedule. They have four SU wins in a row, four covers in a row and now they have added more scoring punch in former All-Star Danny Granger. Granger should provide extra punch off the bench if the leg injury to key reserve Jamal Crawford lingers. Rivers knows a thing or two about monitoring minutes from his days in Boston, limiting Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to keep them fresh for when the games really count, and the Clips have enough games against losing teams to keep Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan from wearing down.

                          Next up: Tuesday at Phoenix

                          ATS losing streak

                          Saint Louis Billikens

It was bad luck that the Billikens had to travel to VCU right after their stunning loss to Duquense, but the schedule is the schedule. The Dukes were 13.5-point dogs before they came in to Saint Louis and won outright, and the Billikens then had to follow that up with a trip to VCU, which promptly won its 19th straight home game. Now Saint Louis' dream season is on hold and Billikens' bettors have had to swallow six consecutive ATS losses. The Atlantic 10 regular season title is still within sight for Saint Louis (25-4), but time to get things back in order before the A-10 tournament is short, and the loss to Duquesne which ended the Billikens’ 19-game win streak still stings.

                          Next up: Wednesday vs. Dayton

                          Over/Under streak

                          Boston Bruins

The Bruins are rarely associated with lazy hockey, but how else to explain their post-Olympics play? Boston’s three games since the break have produced a mind-numbing 24 goals, hardly what Claude Julien has in mind. The Bruins thrive on defense and tight checking, and after four straight games have gone Over, a 3-2 win is (perhaps temporarily) no longer the norm. There are rumors that goalie Tuukka Rask is not they guy anymore. There is even talk about bringing in a defenseman for the stretch run, but that might go on the back burner if Dougie Hamilton continues his strong play.

                          Next up: Tuesday vs. Florida

Canadiens goalie Carey Price, placed on I-R

Price aggravated a lower-body injury following the Olympic break and was placed on the injured reserve as a result. No timetable has been established for his return.

Predators G Rinne to start Tuesday

The Nashville Predators recalled goaltender Pekka Rinne from his weekend conditioning assignment with the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL on Monday.

Rinne, a two-time Vezina Trophy finalist, missed 51 games after having hip surgery to deal with an E.Coli infection. He is expected to start Tuesday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Rinne, 31, stopped 33 of 35 shots in two wins with the Admirals over the weekend.

In his last five NHL games before the injury, Rinne was 3-1-1 with a 1.60 goals-against average and a .937 save percentage -- turning away 120 of 128 shots.

Since the 2008-09 season and before the injury, Rinne ranked first in the NHL in shutouts and was among the top 10 in wins, save percentage and goals-against average. He is one of just two netminders in franchise history to play at least 300 games for the team, and is just four wins away from tying Tomas Vokoun's franchise mark of 161 wins by a goaltender.

Knicks' current skid hasn't been kind to backers

The New York Knicks' season continues to get worse. They are now on six game losing streak which also hasn't been kind to Knicks' backers.

During the current losing skid the Knicks are 1-5 against the spread. They are now 24-36 ATS for the season, the second worst record in the Association.

The Knicks are 5-point road dogs when they visit the Detroit Pistons Monday night.
