    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Wichita State becomes the first team in 10 years (St Joe's '04) to enter its conference tournament undefeated.

-- Miami Marlins have only four players left from its Opening Day roster two years ago, when they were expected to win the NL East.

-- Ricky Nolasco struck out 165 batters LY, but 23 of them were pitchers, so as he moves to the AL, his strikeouts figure to drop at least 14%.

-- Oklahoma State 72, Kansas 65-- Huge win for Cowboys' NCAA hopes.

    -- Memphis 72, Louisville 66-- Tigers ended game on a 15-1 run.

-- Syracuse/St Joe's/Saint Louis were all underdogs Saturday, despite being a combined 35-6 in conference play. Only St Joe's won.

    *****

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

    13) Of the 18 #1 seeds who have won the NCAA tournament, 14 of them covered their second round game. Just an indicator to look out for as we get closer to March Madness. Here's a breakdown........

1st round: Eventual champ 11-6-1 vs spread; 2nd round: 14-4.

    12) Over the last 27 years, the team that won the national title went 21-6 vs spread in second round, only 16-10-1 in first round, although seven of last eight national champs also covered their first round games.

    11) Game of the Day: SE Missouri State 118, Murray State 115, two OTs: Racers made 14-30 from arc and lost. Doesn't happen a lot.

    10) Tough luck team of the week: Cal State-Northridge
Thursday: Matadors lost 82-81 at Fullerton.
Saturday: Matadors lost 106-105 in double OT at Riverside, missing the winning FT at end of regulation, tying FT at end of second OT.

Five of last ten Northridge games went to overtime (3-2).

    9) Virginia 75, Syracuse 56--- Cavaliers clinched first regular season ACC title in 33 years, as Syracuse lost for third time in last four games. According to ESPN's expert Joe Lunardi, Syracuse is a #2 seed right now.

    8) South Carolina 72, Kentucky 67-- John Calipari went thru his whole motivational bag of tricks, including getting thrown out with 10:25 left and Kentucky down 12- they got within a hoop, but Frank Martin got the best win of his 2-year tenure in Columbia.

Side note: Sindarius Thornwell is just a tremendous name.

    7) If the AAC tournament started today, UConn-Memphis would be one hell of a first round game- they're tied for 4th right now. .

    6) ESPN analyst Dan Dakich was working the Illinois-Michigan State tilt Saturday, but went after referee Ted Valentine on the air, in light of a run-in between Valentine and Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin earlier in the day.

Dakich is one of Bob Knight's henchmen; he played/coached at Indiana, so he has become an on-air critic of refs, especially refs who once threw Knight out of a game. Somehow Dakich works Big Dozen games on ESPN when his kid sits on the bench at Michigan; isn't that a conflict of interest?

    5) Xavier 75, Creighton 69-- Musketeers get 20th win, a big win.

    4) Oklahoma State 72, Kansas 65-- Cowboys are 3-0 since Marcus Smart got back on the court; this win punched their ticket to the NCAAs. Bench played total of only 24:00; this was Travis Ford's Super Bowl, and he won.

    3) Kansas has won/shared its conference title ten years in a row and in three of those years, Bill Self had zero starters returning. Great coaching.

    2) Upsets of the Day:
Northern Arizona (+12) wins 73-71 in OT at Weber State.
    NC-Greensboro (+11.5) wins 73-71 at Wofford.
Illinois (+11) wins 53-46 at Michigan State.

    1) Bad Beat of the Day: Western Michigan (+5.5) at Toledo-- Up 12 with 3:05 left, Broncos give up 14 straight points to Toledo, only to tie game and force OT with 0:34 left. They lost by 11 in overtime. Oy.

Kyle Busch wins rain-shortened Nationwide race at Phoenix

AVONDALE, Ariz. -- You can change the cars.

You can change the qualifying format.

You can change the weather from cloudy to sunny to rainy -- multiple times.

But no matter what you do, you can’t keep Kyle Busch out of Victory Lane at Phoenix International Raceway, at least not where the NASCAR Nationwide Series is concerned.

In Saturday's Blue Jeans Go Green 200 at the 1-mile track in the Sonoran desert, Busch dominated -- again -- leading 155 laps en route to his unprecedented third straight NNS victory at PIR and his seventh overall.

Busch’s first victory of the 2014 was his 64th overall, extending his own series record, and it was his first in a rain-shortened race in any of NASCAR’s top three series. Despite repeated efforts to dry the track, NASCAR ultimately called the event 32 laps short of its scheduled distance.

With a hard rain falling, NASCAR brought the cars to pit road and halted the race after Busch crossed the finish line to complete Lap 168, under caution for Ryan Reed's crash into the wall that guards the inside of the backstretch dogleg.

      After a two-hour, eight-minute red-flag period, NASCAR made Busch’s win official.

"I think just the pure dominance we've shown here the last few times that we've come here and the amount of laps we've led with how fast our cars are is pretty phenomenal," Busch said after a rain-soaked celebration. "All the credit goes to Adam Stevens (crew chief) and everybody back at the shop.

"It's fun to win them anyway. This is my first time winning a rain-shortened one. Welcome to the tent. I don't know that it really made a whole lot of difference. We were really good. I would have loved to gone back out there after, but the weather wasn't on our side today."

The driver of the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota had taken the point for the first time with a pass of pole-sitter Brad Keselowski on Lap 6. From that point on, Busch toyed with the rest of the field, extending his advantage to more than four seconds at its widest.

Kevin Harvick was second when rain halted the race, having passed Keselowski on Lap 160. Keselowski recovered from an accident on Lap 20 to run third. A tap from the pole winner sent Darryl Haar spinning into the outside wall off Turn 2 in a collision that also damaged the nose of Keselowski’s car.

The 2010 series champion restarted 27th on Lap 29 after pitting but worked his way forward. He took advantage of his earlier pit stop to retake the lead while most of the cars behind him had made green-flag stops for tires and fuel before the second caution slowed the race on Lap 90.

Harvick led briefly for the restart on Lap 97, but Busch regained the top spot on the restart lap and never relinquished it.

Kyle Larson was fourth, followed by Matt Kenseth, Elliott Sadler, Trevor Bayne and last Saturday’s Daytona winner, Regan Smith, who retained a five-point lead over Bayne in the series standings.

In his first run in the No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, Harvick was loose on restarts and soon fell approximately two seconds behind Busch.

"From there, we were just able to maintain," Harvick said. "But a good effort for the first time out. ... Kyle had the best car today. We probably finished where we should have."

During three breaks in the rain, NASCAR put its Air Titan track-drying system to work, but three more intermittent downpours foiled the efforts to restart the race.

Five steps to safely bet MLB Spring Training action

Betting MLB Spring Training is right up there with eating that week-old slice of pizza at the back of your fridge and lending your car to that sweet girl with the tramp stamp you met at the bar last night (she said she had to pick up her aunt from the hospital) – not the best idea.

But for those of you dealing with massive intestinal discomfort or the ones describing your 1997 Isuzu Trooper to the local police, you know that sometimes you just can’t help yourself.

If you are going to bet on Cactus and Grapefruit League action this spring, at least follow these guidelines.

        Do your homework

Like betting any preseason sport, you have to know what the gameplan is before even thinking of putting your hard-earned coin on the line. Read, read and read some more.

“One advantage that bettors have in these exhibition games is information,” Covers Expert Matt Fargo says. “Similar to NFL preseason games where coaches give out their player rotations and game plans, managers in baseball are very up front on how long starters will be pitching for and what sort of lineups they are going with.”

Listen to what the manager is hoping to accomplish this spring: Is he working in prospects or trying to sure up the rotation? And study up on key players and how they approach spring ball: Do they pace themselves in March or come out swinging? We hate to sound like a public service announcement, but “The more you know…”

        Start cautiously

The first few games of spring training might as well be a high school science fair. Managers are experimenting with lineups and rotations, mixing this guy with that guy and swapping bodies like he’s rolling out hockey lines.

Players are also a tough read in the opening slate of exhibition games. Some guys are easing into the action, others are battling for positions, and others are just trying to stay healthy. Keep an ear to the base paths or sit back and watch how a manager is treating the first weeks of spring ball.

        Find the right pitching matchups

As Spring Training marches on, starting pitchers take on more and more work. Guys will go at least five innings, giving you a pretty good idea of what to expect from the staff. The best situation is when you have an ace matched up against a No. 4 or No. 5 starter, or a young prospect trying to break into the bigs. Managers aren’t quick to change up pitchers in the spring, even if a guy is getting hammered.

        Betting the “better” team

Roster depth and a surplus of talent can go a long way in Spring Training. Since veterans tend to limit themselves in the exhibition slate, knowing who’s behind them is imperative to betting spring baseball.

A talent-loaded lineup can make up for the absence of one or two big bats, while a shallow roster struggles without those elite hitters at the plate. It’s the reason a club like Detroit always seems to excel in spring ball, posting a collective 61-33 record the past four spring sessions.

Ride hot teams, fade cold ones

There is almost zero consistency in Spring Training, so when you start to see a pattern – winning or losing – jump on it. Managers couldn’t care less about the results, so don’t expect them to rush to right the ship if their club struggles in the spring. And if a team is winning, the skip must be doing something right and will only tweak minor details.

Oscar odds: Betting the 86th Academy Awards

The Academy Awards are one of the biggest non-sporting events for online sportsbooks, drawing a respectable handle from prop bettors and movie buffs looking to cash in on the Oscars.

Who better to break down the bets on the 86th Academy Awards than a film critic from Sin City? Josh Bell, film editor for Las Vegas Weekly, gives you his take on the best from the big screen and where betting value could be hiding when the envelopes open Sunday night:

          Best Picture

          12 Years A Slave -500
          Gravity +400
          American Hustle +1500
          Dallas Buyers Club +2500
The Wolf Of Wall Street +5000
          Her +15000
          Captain Phillips +15000
          Nebraska +15000
          Philomena +20000

What Will Win: It’s hard to argue with the Oscar credentials of 12 Years a Slave, with its serious historical subject matter, physically-demanding performances and difficult but uplifting story. 12 Years a Slave has taken enough previous prizes to have the obvious momentum, but don’t count out Gravity, which is more of an audience-friendly crowd pleaser, and a massive technical achievement to boot. Plus, it picked up top awards from the American Film Institute and the Directors Guild of America.

What Should Win: It would be wonderful to see a more offbeat choice like Spike Jonze’s deeply personal, heartfelt Her or Alexander Payne’s darkly comic Nebraska pick up the top prize, but there isn’t much chance of that happening. Although it’s a bit of a structural mess, American Hustle is probably the most purely entertaining nominee and its chances are a little stronger.

          Best Actor

Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) -600
Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf Of Wall Street) +400
          Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) +900
          Bruce Dern (Nebraska) +5000
          Christian Bale (American Hustle) +6000

Who Will Win: The McConaissance is in full effect and this is clearly Matthew McConaughey’s award to lose. Never mind that he was much more impressive this year in the underrated Mud - this is his designated awards role and his time has come.

Who Should Win: Bruce Dern has spent his entire career being underappreciated and his turn as a perpetually underappreciated curmudgeon in Nebraska is a masterpiece of understated acting. Unfortunately, the Academy doesn’t usually go for understated and, despite their tendency to give career-capping awards (Dern has been nominated only once before in 1979), it’s unlikely he’ll take home a statue.

          Best Actress

          Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) -3500
          Sandra Bullock (Gravity) +1500
          Amy Adams (American Hustle) +1500
          Judi Dench (Philomena) +4000
Meryl Streep (August: Osage County) +4000

Who Will Win: If Cate Blanchett doesn’t win this award, nothing in this world is certain anymore. She’s been essentially the only contender since Blue Jasmine was released in August.

Who Should Win: Blanchett is a marvelous talent, but her mannered, hammy performance has been severely overrated. Amy Adams is much better in American Hustle, playing a character who is herself playing several different characters. Adams conveys all the layers of deception and insecurity inherent in the role and she does it with a remarkable emotional reality.

          Best Supporting Actor

Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) -2000
          Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave) +800
          Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) +1500
Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street) +2500
          Bradley Cooper (American Hustle) +5000

Who Will Win: Again, there’s virtually no chance that Jared Leto won’t walk home with this one. The combination of a physical transformation, a serious social issue and a return to acting after a six-year hiatus is pretty much impossible to pass up. And it helps that Leto brought genuine pathos to what could have been a somewhat cartoonish role.

Who Should Win: Leto is probably the best performer in a rather weak category. The other nominees either gave relatively one-note performances or were overshadowed by their more impressive co-stars. Given the choices, Leto is the deserved winner.

          Best Supporting Actress

          Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) -200
          Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle) +120
          Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine) +5000
          June Squibb (Nebraska) +5000
Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) +5000

Who Will Win: The odds may favor newcomer Lupita Nyong’o and the Academy does love anointing a new star, but don’t count out Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games fans know the odds are ever in her favor), who is clearly an Academy darling (this is her third nomination and she’s only 23). Her performance in American Hustle is the kind of breezy, scene-stealing work that frequently picks up supporting acting awards.

Who Should Win: At 84, June Squibb would be the oldest actor ever to win an Oscar if she gets a statue for Nebraska. She won’t. But her hilarious performance as the put-upon wife of Bruce Dern’s grumpy old man transcends the cliché of old people saying inappropriate things, creating a well-rounded portrait of a woman who’s gotten too old to care what anyone thinks of her.

          Best Director

          Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity) -4000
          Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave) +1000
David O. Russell (American Hustle) +2500
Martin Scorsese (The Wolf Of Wall Street) +5000
          Alexander Payne (Nebraska) +7500

Who Will Win: The Directors Guild of America has pretty much sealed the deal for Alfonso Cuaron. Even if Gravity doesn’t end up winning Best Picture, his monumental achievement will almost certainly get him the Best Director award. Putting together that kind of technical wizardry, a gripping story and a fascinating lead performance is something very few people could pull off.

Who Should Win: If Cuaron takes the award, he’ll certainly deserve it. Too often, this award just goes by default to the director of the Best Picture winner, but Cuaron really exemplifies what a director does at his best - holding together the various disparate elements of a huge production and combining them all into a seamless, fully engrossing experience.

Game of the Day: Senators at Canucks
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Vancouver Canucks (-135, 5.5)

The Ottawa Senators kick off a four-game road trip through Western Canada on Sunday when they head outdoors to face the Vancouver Canucks in the Heritage Classic. The Canucks traditionally play at Rogers Arena but will shift next door to compete under the retractable-roof stadium at BC Place, which is the home of the Canadian Football League's BC Lions. "I played outdoors in the (American Hockey League) and it was awesome," Senators center Zack Smith said. "It was different, a lot of fun and it's still competitive because there's two points on the line."

Vancouver can certainly use the two points as it fell for the eighth time in nine outings with a 2-1 shootout loss to Minnesota on Friday. The lack of offense has plagued the Canucks, who have mustered just six goals in the last six contests. Vancouver seems to find its stride against Ottawa, as it posted a 5-2 triumph on Nov. 28 for its sixth straight win versus the Senators and 10th in 11 meetings.

                          LINE HISTORY:
The Canucks opened as -135 home faves. The total opened at 5.5 goals.

                          POWER RANKINGS:
                          Senators(-129) / Canucks (-141)

                          INJURY WATCH:
Senators - Craig Anderson (Ques. - Personal), Canucks - Yannick Weber (Ques. - Undisclosed), Mike Santorelli (IR - Shoulder)

                          ABOUT THE SENATORS (26-23-11 SU, 27-33 ATS, 35-24 O/U):
Although Ottawa is the road team, Kyle Turris was more than happy to return home. "To play in any outdoor game is something different and special, but to play in my hometown against the Canucks, it’s going to be really special," the New Westminster (B.C.) native told The Province. "I’m really looking forward to it. I could never imagine an outdoor game in Vancouver, but it’s going to be really cool. I haven’t even seen B.C. Place since it has been redone." Turris has scored a career-high 19 goals this season, but has just a tally and an assist in his last six contests.

                          ABOUT THE CANUCKS (28-24-10 SU, 24-38 ATS, 20-34 O/U):
Captain Henrik and Daniel Sedin will see some familiar faces in attendance on Sunday as parents Tommy and Tora made the trek from Ornskoldsvik, Sweden. "They come over once or twice (per year)," Henrik Sedin said. "They timed it to come to the outdoor game." Perhaps their parents can also bring a bit of good fortune for the struggling duo as Henrik has failed to tally in his last 19 games and Daniel's drought stands at 21 contests - although the latter scored in the previous meeting.

                          CONSENSUS:
65 percent of wagers are on the Canucks at -135.
