Game of the Day: Thunder at Mavericks
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Dallas Mavericks (+1, 210)

The Dallas Mavericks are locked in a three-way battle for one of the final two playoff spots in the Western Conference and can’t afford to drop many more home games along the way. The Mavericks will get a tough test in their own building when they host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday. Dallas is halfway through an eight-game homestand but is just 2-2 so far with a pair of overtime losses and a trio of playoff contenders on the way.

The Thunder crushed the Denver Nuggets 117-96 on Monday despite Russell Westbrook sitting out after his latest right knee scare. Westbrook, who had an MRI come back clean over the weekend, is expected to return Tuesday to help Oklahoma City keep pace with the San Antonio Spurs atop the West. The Spurs own a two-game cushion over the Thunder. The Mavericks secured an impressive 109-86 victory at Oklahoma City on March 16 with Westbrook sitting out, snapping seven-game regular-season losing streak in the series.

    TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

LINE HISTORY: The early line out of Vegas has the Mavericks as 1-point home dogs with the total at 210.

INJURY WATCH: Oklahoma City: G Russell Westbrook - probable (knee). Dallas: G Jose Calderon - questionable (nose)

    POWER RANKINGS: Oklahoma City (-13.7) - Dallas (-9) + home court (-3) = Oklahoma City -1.7

WHY BET THE THUNDER (52-18, 38-31-1 ATS): Kevin Durant is chasing history with 35 straight games of at least 25 points, the longest streak since Michael Jordan went 40 straight during the 1986-87 campaign. Durant put up 27 against the Nuggets on Monday and got plenty of help from Reggie Jackson, who started in Westbrook’s spot and collected 16 points and 11 assists. Oklahoma City continues to give more minutes to veteran Caron Butler, who was picked up earlier this month after being bought out by the Milwaukee Bucks and scored his most since joining the team with 23 points against Denver.

WHY BET THE MAVERICKS (42-29, 39-32 ATS): Dallas is having trouble putting 48 minutes together. The Mavericks trailed by 22 points in the first half before forcing overtime in a loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday and squandered a double-digit advantage before falling in the extra period to the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday. Dirk Nowitzki suffered through one of his worst games of the season against the Nets, totaling 10 points on 2-of-12 shooting. “It’s tough,” Nowitzki told reporters. “I kind of hesitated too much and I was kind of always waiting on the double team instead of playing my game.”

    TRENDS:

    * Under is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings.
    * Thunder are 12-3-1 ATS in the last 16 meetings in Dallas.
    * Road team is 33-16-2 ATS in the last 51 meetings.
    * Underdog is 23-8-1 ATS in the last 32 meetings.

Bank Shots: NBA's weekly betting news and notes
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of March 17-23.

      Hottest ATS - Philadelphia 76ers (0-4 SU, 4-0 ATS)

It looks like oddsmakers have finally found the 76ers' tipping point when it comes to margin of loss. Sure, Philadelphia is still dropping games at a potentially historic rate - going into Monday just two losses shy of the NBA record of 26 held by the Cleveland Cavaliers - but it was competitive enough over its last four games to claim the rare winless straight up, unbeaten against the spread week. That stretch may very well continue Monday, with the 76ers installed as 21 1/2-point underdogs to a San Antonio team that may call off the dogs by halftime.

Coldest ATS - Chicago Bulls (2-2 SU, 0-4 ATS)

The 76ers were no doubt aided by a pair of closer-than-expected losses to the Chicago Bulls, who struggled ATS as they try to stay in the hunt for home-court advantage in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. The Bulls only managed to defeat the lowly 76ers by eight and 10 points, respectively, while squeezing in 12-point defeats to the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers. Looming home games against Indiana and Portland should prove challenging, with a home-and-home set with the Boston Celtics to follow.

Best Over play - Portland Trail Blazers (2-1 SU, 3-0 O/U)

No LaMarcus Aldridge? No problem for the Trail Blazers, who can still fill the net like few teams in the NBA - and isn't too shabby at letting the opposition do the same. Portland had little trouble extending its streak of over outcomes to four last week, earning a 120-115 overtime victory over the Milwaukee Bucks before cruising past Washington 116-103 and getting thumped 124-94 at Charlotte. Expect the offense to continue as Portland resumes its road trip with games in Miami, Orlando, Atlanta and Chicago before returning home to face Memphis.

Best Under play - Memphis Grizzlies (2-1 SU, 0-3 O/U)

Things haven't changed a bit in Memphis, either, with the Grizzlies still using stifling defense and just enough offense to remain in the Western Conference playoff hunt. Memphis won two of three last week, with each outcome - a 96-86 win over Utah, a 91-86 defeat at Miami and an 82-71 triumph over Indiana - falling below the already low total. The Grizzlies face some challenging offenses this week - hosting Minnesota before hitting the road for games at Utah, Golden State and Portland - so the streak of six straight unders may be in jeopardy.

      Surveying the schedule

While much of the focus will continue to be on the respective playoff races and which teams will be giving their star players the night off, there is still plenty of buzz surrounding the 76ers' streak of futility. Philadelphia isn't going to get much of a break in its quest to avoid equaling the Cavaliers' record, tangling with the Spurs before heading to Houston for a date with the Rockets on Thursday. If the 76ers lose both, they'll look to derail the streak Saturday at home against a surprisingly beatable Detroit Pistons team.

Spurs win 14th straight; extend 76ers' skid to 25

The San Antonio Spurs upended the Philadelphia 76ers 113-91 Monday night, extending their win streak to 14, while moving the Sixers one loss closer to being historically bad.

The Sixers have now lost 25 straight games and are just one loss away from tying the NBA record of 26 set by the 2010-1 Cleveland Cavaliers. Philadelphia faces Houston on Thursday.

Meanwhile the Spurs are on the longest win streak in the Tim Duncan-Greg Popovich era and the win streak has been kind to bettors. They are 11-3 against the spread during the streak, including covering their last eight games. The Spurs host Denver Tuesday.

Grizzlies extend home win streak to 10

The Memphis Grizzlies extended their home win streak to 10 with their 109-92 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves Monday night.

During the streak, the Grizzlies have surprisingly been a good over play, putting up a 7-3 over/under mark.

Unfortunately for the Grizzlies, they now must embark on a five game road trip as they continue to battle for the Western Conference's last few playoff spots. Their next home game is April 4 when they host the Denver Nuggets.

Favorites take care of business Monday night

Favorites took care of of business Monday night in the Association, putting up a solid 8-2 mark against the spread, hitting at a mark of 80 percent.

Away favorites were even more impressive going a perfect 3-0 ATS last night.

Blazers' PF LaMarcus Aldridge, doubtlful Tuesday

Aldridge is suffering from a back contusion and is doubtful to play Tuesday against the Magic.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week's best NBA spot bet opportunities
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Letdown spot

San Antonio has come on strong, and the Spurs have been the best team in the NBA since the All-Star break. San Antonio goes into its Monday night home game against Philadelphia on a 15-1 SU and 12-4 ATS run.

The Spurs will also be at home Wednesday night when they host the resurgent Denver Nuggets before traveling to Denver for a game Friday night. San Antonio hasn’t played the Nuggets since the fourth game of the season, so that home-and-home set will have the Spurs focused. San Antonio will be in a letdown spot Saturday night when it returns home to host New Orleans, especially since the Spurs will be playing their third game in four nights.

              Lookahead spot

The Toronto Raptors play four games this week, including three on the road. The Raptors play in Cleveland against the Cavaliers Tuesday night, and then play a home-and-home set versus the Celtics, starting in Boston, Wednesday and Friday. Toronto finishes the week in Orlando Sunday.

Toronto is off back-to-back energy-draining games, losing to Oklahoma City in overtime and then coming back from a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit to beat Atlanta. The Raptors beat Cleveland the last time they played, but they lost their last trip to Boston. That means they may overlook the Cavaliers Tuesday night, especially with back-to-back games against the Celtics on deck.

              Schedule spot

Portland has a tough week ahead with five games on the schedule. The Blazers’ week begins in Miami Monday and it concludes at home versus Memphis Sunday. The Blazers have not been in good form, but they have a pair of winnable road games in Orlando Tuesday night and in Atlanta Thursday night.

The trouble spot for Portland comes in Chicago Friday. The Blazers will be playing on a back-to-back road set and it will also be their fourth game in five nights. Chicago will be the much fresher team as the Bulls will go into that game on three days of rest.

                • Tuesday's Tips

                  March 25, 2014

Raptors at Cavaliers – 7:05 PM EST

                  Toronto: 39-30 SU, 42-26-1 ATS
                  Cleveland: 27-44 SU, 34-37 ATS

The Raptors finished in last place of the Atlantic Division last season, but Toronto is one victory away from the 40-win mark with 13 games remaining. Dwane Casey’s club goes for its third win over the Cavaliers this season after beating Cleveland by six and seven points in the two previous meetings. Toronto has split its last eight games, while coming off a home victory on Sunday over Atlanta, 96-86 as 7 ½-point favorites.

The Cavaliers stunned the Knicks as 10-point underdogs on Sunday, 106-100, as Cleveland erased a 15-point halftime deficit. The victory snapped a four-game skid for the Cavs, who have now covered four consecutive contests and six of the last seven. Mike Brown’s team has dropped five straight games at Quicken Loans Arena since the start of March, but the Cavs have cashed in losses to the Heat, Thunder, and Rockets over the last week.

Blazers at Magic – 7:05 PM EST

                  Portland: 45-26 SU, 38-33 ATS
                  Orlando: 19-52 SU, 29-40-2 ATS

The Blazers continue to stumble on the road, but managed a cover in last night’s buzzer-beating loss at Miami, 93-91 as 6 ½-point underdogs. Portland has lost six of its past seven games away from the Moda Center, while scoring less than 100 points in five of those defeats. LaMarcus Aldridge continues to sit with a back injury that has kept the All-Star forward sidelined for the last six games, as the Blazers have posted a 3-3 SU and 4-2 ATS record. The last time the Blazers and Magic hooked up in January, Portland cruised to a 110-94 rout as 12 ½-point favorites.

The Magic is stumbling to the finish line, losing nine straight games, including an 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS West Coast road trip. The offense failed to crack the 94-point mark in all four games on their away swing, resulting in four ‘unders.’ Since mid-January, Orlando has put together a solid 11-4 ATS record at Amway Arena, but has lost its last three home games to Denver, Houston, and Washington. Defensively, Jacque Vaughn’s club has given up at least 100 points in eight of the past nine contests, while losing eight straight games to Western Conference foes.

Thunder at Mavericks – 8:05 PM EST

Oklahoma City: 52-18 SU, 38-31-1 ATS
                  Dallas: 42-29 SU, 39-32 ATS

The Thunder ripped up the tired Nuggets last night, 117-96 as 11-point home favorites to win their fourth straight game. Oklahoma City improved to 4-5 ATS the last nine contests as it looks to avenge an ugly home defeat earlier this month to Dallas when Russell Westbrook sat out to rest his knee. The Mavs blew out the Thunder from start to finish, 109-86 to easily cash as 7 ½-point underdogs, the first win over OKC in 11 tries (since January 2012).

Dallas continues a season-long eight-game homestand after getting tripped up in overtime by Brooklyn, 107-104 on Sunday. Rick Carlisle’s club has finished ‘over’ the total in three straight games, which includes another overtime setback to Minnesota last week. The Mavs have lost consecutive home games just once this season, coming back in early January to the Knicks and Clippers, while going 11-3 SU the last 14 games overall off a defeat.

Knicks at Lakers – 10:35 PM EST

New York: 29-41 SU, 30-40 ATS
Los Angeles: 23-46 SU, 35-33-1 ATS

The Knicks are playing their best basketball of the season, but suffered a rough defeat on Sunday against the banged-up Cavaliers, ending an eight-game hot streak. Now, New York travels to the West Coast to begin a five-game swing which begins with the down-and-out Lakers at Staples Center. In six of the eight wins during their winning streak, the Knicks feasted on the likes of the 76ers twice, Cavs, Jazz, and Celtics to get back in the playoff race. The positive for Mike Woodson’s squad is the current four-game road winning streak, which included three victories by ten points or more.

The Lakers are just counting down the days until the end of the season, but the Purple and Gold is coming off a win over Orlando on Sunday night, 103-94, which snapped a four-game skid. For the first time in 14 games, the Lakers held an opponent to below 100 points, as the ‘over’ is 10-4 in this stretch for Los Angeles. Game of the Day: Heat at Pacers
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Indiana Pacers (-2, 189)

The Indiana Pacers and the Miami Heat have not spent a lot of time playing like championship contenders over the last month. The teams are still the class of the Eastern Conference, however, and the Heat will look to knock another game off their deficit when they visit the Pacers on Wednesday. Indiana comes in having lost two straight while Miami managed to pick up a victory on Monday to get its deficit in the East down to two games.

The Heat’s 93-91 home win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday was just their fifth in the last 12 games and came only after squandering a 17-point fourth-quarter advantage. The Pacers have been unable to take advantage of Miami’s rough stretch due to its own record of 5-7 in the last 12, and a loss on Wednesday would draw Indiana even with the Heat in the loss column. All but one of those last seven setbacks have come on the road for the Pacers, who are 32-4 in their own building — including a win over Miami.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, Sun Sports (Miami), FSN Indiana

LINE HISTORY: The early odds out of Las Vegas have Indiana as a suggested 2-point home favorite with a total of 189 points. However, most sportsbooks are waiting on the status of Heat G Dwyane Wade (rest), who is worth as many as three points to the spread.

                            POWER RANKINGS: Heat (-14.0) - Pacers (-12.5) + Home Court (-3.0) = Pacers -1.5

INJURY REPORT: Heat - Dwyane Wade (Rest - Prob). Pacers - C.J. Waton (Hamstring - Ques.), Andrew Bynum (Knee - Out)

ABOUT THE HEAT (48-21 SU, 30-37-2 ATS, 39-30-0 O/U): Center Chris Bosh understands that Miami is stepping into a rabid atmosphere as it tries to chase down the Pacers for the top spot. “It’s coming down to a photo finish,” Bosh told reporters. “We have a unique opportunity. No matter what’s happened this whole season, we’re within striking distance. It’s here and it’ll be a great playoff atmosphere. I can’t wait.” The Heat are expecting guard Dwyane Wade (Achilles’ tendon) to return to action after sitting out Monday’s contest.

ABOUT THE PACERS (51-20 SU, 35-35-1 ATS, 29-40-2 O/U): Paul George scored 21 points in Monday’s loss to the Chicago Bulls but he shot below 40 percent for the fifth straight game. George is just 21-of-76 during his shooting slump – a porous 27.6 percent – and is shooting just 37.7 percent in March. Getting George back on his game will be a focus down the stretch but there is also a concern that the All-Star forward is wearing down. His 18.9 scoring average in March is easily his lowest of the season.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Home team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
                            * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                            * Heat are 1-5 ATS in the last six meetings in Indiana.

                              Jazz/Grizzlies open with league-low total

Both the Memphis Grizzlies and Utah Jazz have been solid Under plays all season long and that is largely based on their offenses. The Grizz and Jazz are No. 26 and No. 29 in scoring offense this season respectively.

The last five meetings in Utah between the two clubs have gone under the total every time. The Grizzlies, who hold the NBA's best Under mark on the road this season at 12-21, have gone under in their last five road games. The Jazz have gone under in 70 percent of their last 10 games.

The Grizz and Jazz open with a league-low 184.5 total Wednesday night.

Raptors have been horrendous against Boston

The Toronto Raptors have been on fire and they've been especially strong against the spread on the road. However, the Raptors have an appalling ATS record against the Celtics.

The past 28 games between the Raptors and Celtics has seen Toronto carry a 7-20-1 ATS record, but it gets much worse. In the past nine times the Raps have played in the TD Center, they have not covered once, going 0-8-1 ATS.

These two teams have clashed in Boston once already this season with the Raptors were 4-point favorites, but lost outright to the Celtics 88-83. Toronto is currently a 3-point road fave for the meeting in Boston Wednesday.

Spurs put win streak on the line Wednesday

Riding a fantastic 14-game winning streak, the San Antonio Spurs have been the hottest team in the NBA. Not only on a straight up basis either. The Spurs have cashed in for bettors in eight-straight games against the spread.

The SU win streak started back on Feb. 26 with a 120-110 win over the Detroit Pistons. Since then, the Spurs have gone 11-3 ATS at the betting window. The offense has really led the charge for the Spurs, scoring 100-plus points in 11 of the 14 wins. Plus, two of the games saw the Spurs tally 99 points on the offensive end.

The Denver Nuggets will visit the Spurs Wednesday evening. San Antonio is currently a 13-point home fave in the matchup.

                              Pelicans F Anderson faces surgery

The New Orleans Pelicans confirmed Tuesday that forward Ryan Anderson will not return this season because of a herniated cervical disc.

Anderson is scheduled to undergo surgery on April 8 after treatment proved unsuccessful, the team announced. He has been sidelined since since Jan. 3 with an injury he sustained in a game against the Boston Celtics.

The 25-year-old Anderson played in 22 games this season and averaged 19.8 points and 6.5 rebounds.

In six NBA seasons with the Brooklyn Nets, Orlando Magic and Pelicans, Anderson has career averages of 12.3 points and 5.6 rebounds.
