    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six of the Baltimore Orioles' best minor league prospects.......

    1) Dylan Bundy, P-- Missed all of last year with injury; was 2-0, 3.24 in three AA starts in 2012.

    2) Kevin Gausman, P-- Made majors after only 97 IP in minors.

    3) Eduardo Rodriguez, P-- 366 IP in minors, still hasn't reached AAA.

    5) Jonathan Schoop 2B/SS-- Curacao native got 14 ABs with O's LY.

    7) Henry Urrutia, OF-- Cuban defector is 27, lacks power for corner OF

    28) Josh Stinson, P-- Made majors LY, after 840 IP in minors.

    *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend....

    13) Heading into Sunday, your busiest college basketball refs this season were: Roger Ayers (80 games), Karl Hess (79) , Jamie Luckie (78). Hess did one of the games I watched Sunday, so he's worked 80 games now too.

    12) The third-place match in the World Golf Match Play tournament did not seem like much of an event, but there was a $120,000 difference between winning and losing that match. Not bad for playing 18 holes.

    11) First Match Play tournament was in 1999, when Jeff Maggert needed two extra holes to beat Andrew Magee; back then, the final was 36 holes, so they played 38 holes that day. Until yesterday, that was the only final that had gone to extra holes.

    10) 30-year old Brett Gardner, who has played three full seasons in the big leagues, got a $52M, four-year extension from Bronx. His on-base %age in his three full seasons of play: .383/.345/.344. Seems like a lot of money.

    9) Jamal Crawford has played for 17 head coaches in his 14-year career in the NBA- he's played for six different teams. Crawford only played 17 games in his his college career, for Michigan in 1999-2000.

    8) Dodger pitcher Jamey Wright is at his 21st spring training for his 10th big league team; last year was the only one of the 21 spring trainings that was in Florida. Wright has earned a little over $14M as a big leaguer since '96.

    7) When Lebron James sat out Sunday with a broken nose, Greg Oden got his first start since December 5, 2009- it was his 61st NBA start. He was only at Ohio State for a year (32 games) so he hasn't played much ball.

    6) Last time the driver who led the Daytona 500 at the halfway mark won the race was 1992, when Davey Allison was the winner.

    5) Memphis Grizzlies are 31-24, but are ninth in west right now and out of the playoff picture; only four teams in the east are over .500.

    4) Independence Bowl in Shreveport used to be called the Poulan Weed Eater Bowl; now its going to be the Duck Commander Bowl, sponsored by the Robertson family of Duck Dynasty fame. Robertsons have made a lot of money selling kazoo-type objects that attract ducks for hunters.

    3) While Carmelo Anthony's Knicks are floundering at 21-35, the team that Jeremy Lin plays for (Houston) is 38-18. Coincidence? I don't think so.

    2) Wednesday afternoon/night, MLB Network has three major league spring training games on: Jays-Phils, Reds-Indians, Dodgers-Arizona, as winter finally seems to be getting pushed out the door.

    1) Since 1967, most NFL first round draft picks, by school:
    USC 66, Miami 56, Ohio State 54, Florida 43.

Post-Olympic NHL historically trends to the Over

With players set to return to action following the Olympic break, the question on bettors' minds is will there be goals a-plenty, or a major offensive shortage?

If past history is any indication, fans should expect a scoring bump - the league has traditionally seen inflated scoring totals in the first week following the break, suggesting that it takes longer for defense and goaltending to adjust to the time away from the ice. And while it hasn't always been the case - 2006 being the outlier - it has proven to be one of the more reliable trends over the long haul.

Here's a look at the goals-per-game rates for the week following the Olympic break compared to the rate leading up to the tournament:

      1997-98
Goals per game, pre-Olympic break: 5.28
Goals per game, post-Olympic break: 5.39

The first Olympic break in modern history saw a slight bump in goal production. Sixteen of the 44 games played that week featured seven or more goals, highlighted by a a 7-4 slugfest between the victorious Los Angeles Kings and the Chicago Blackhawks.

      2001-02
Goals per game, pre-Olympic break: 5.23
Goals per game, post-Olympic break: 5.77

Players returned from a thrilling Canadian victory over the U.S. at Salt Lake City ready to fill the net - and they did so at a staggering rate, surpassing the pre-break scoring average by better than half a goal. There were just five shutouts among the 52 games played the first week back.

      2005-06
Goals per game, pre-Olympic break: 6.23
Goals per game, post-Olympic break: 5.92

Fans were treated to the most prolific scoring season in more than decade - but the breakneck pace of the pre-Olympic schedule proved unsustainable in the opening week back from Turin, Italy. That said, there were still plenty of high-scoring affairs; five teams scored seven or more goals in a game.

      2009-10
Goals per game, pre-Olympic break: 5.65
Goals per game, post-Olympic break, 6.08

Another Canadian win over the U.S. for gold, another scoring boom when players returned to NHL ice. Teams posted just four shutouts in the 52 games that week, while 22 of those contests saw teams combine for seven or more goals.

Game of the Day: Oklahoma at Kansas
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma Sooners at Kansas Jayhawks (-11, 158)

Kansas put up one of the most impressive wins of the Big 12 season with an 85-54 drubbing of a ranked Texas squad Saturday to push its winning streak to three. The Jayhawks will quickly turn the page and try to clinch at least a tie for the Big 12 regular-season title when they host Oklahoma on Monday. The Sooners are one of three teams three games behind Kansas with four games to play.

The Jayhawks, who have as much talent as any team in the country with Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid rocketing up NBA draft boards, put it all together against the Longhorns on both ends of the floor. Wiggins buried three 3-pointers and added several highlight-worthy dunks as Kansas got out in transition and outscored Texas 26-0 on fast-break points. Oklahoma will not be afraid to get out and run with the Jayhawks; the Sooners nearly upset the Jayhawks at home on Jan. 8 before falling 90-83.

        TV:
        9 p.m. ET, ESPN

        LINE HISTORY:
Kansas opened as a 11-point home favorite. Early odds in Las Vegas suggested a total of 158 points.

        POWER RANKINGS:
        Oklahoma (-10.1) - Kansas (-16.7) + Home Court (-3.0) = Kansas -9.6

        ABOUT OKLAHOMA (20-7 SU, 14-10-1 ATS, 14-10 O/U):
The Sooners are among the nation’s leaders in scoring average at 82.8 and are coming off back-to-back wins, including an 86-73 triumph over Kansas State on Saturday. Cameron Clark went for 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting but has not reached 20 points since matching a career high with 32 in the loss to Kansas on Jan. 8. The senior swingman spent that game slashing to the basket against the Jayhawks’ bigger frontline but gave up enough size that Kansas posted a 36-22 rebounding advantage.

        ABOUT KANSAS (21-6 SU, 14-12-1 ATS, 16-10 O/U):
The Jayhawks needed only nine points from Wiggins and six from Embiid in the first meeting as fellow freshman Wayne Selden Jr. (24 points) carried the scoring load. Wiggins keyed a 32-5 run in the first half against the Longhorns and likes to get going early on offense. “When I start early it builds up my confidence in my game,” Wiggins told reporters.
