13) North Carolina 74, Duke 66-- UNC outscored Duke 20-7 on foul line; teams combined to go 7-31 from arc. tough game to ref; very physical, lot of carping from players. Five of eight guys Duke used finished game with four fouls. Very curious to see how Duke comes out Saturday vs Syracuse.

12) Michigan State 94, Purdue 79-- Tom Izzo turned into Paul Westhead for a night, as Spartans went 13-19 from arc in first half snd shot their way past a Purdue club that took 20 free throws in each half.

11) Guy sitting behind Spartans' bench wearing a Michigan State pullover was Izzo pal/former NFL coach Steve Mariucci, in Indianapolis for the NFL Combine this weekend.

10) Why aren't Eldrick Woods/Phil Mickelson at the Match Play event this week? Woods was probably planning to go to the Olympics with his girlfriend the skiier, but she got hurt-- did they go anyway?

9) Speaking of the Olympics, Islanders lost John Tavares for the season with a knee injury, which is why some people are against NHL players going to the Olympics.

6) Joe Maddon has a 677-620 record with the Rays, which is becoming Hall of Fame-worthy, when you conmsider they were 518-775 before he got to the Bay Area. He's made the playoffs four of the last six seasons.

5) NFL salary cap is going up 5%, to $130M per team; league is doing great financially, which is why Roger Goodell banked $44M last fiscal year.

4) Braves signed SS Andrelton Simmons to a $57M contract; young man hit only .248 LY in his first full year in the big leaguies.

3) Bob Knight was a great coach before they put the shot clock and 3-pointer in; he's a poor color analyst on TV. If you can't sound good working with Brent Musburger, you're a lost cause. Only time Knight shows an ounce of enthusiasm is when he talks about hunting/fishing.

2) Cal-Irvine 60, Hawai'i 56 ot-- Anteaters have never been to NCAAs, but they're on top of the Big West now; three of their last four wins are by 4 or less points, or in overtime.

Friday's Olympic hockey betting cheat sheet

Here's a look at Friday's Olympic men's hockey action:

Sweden vs. Finland (+135)

The Finns enter their semifinal match with Sweden as underdogs, which should come as no surprise to anyone following them. Finland reached the semis with an impressive 3-1 victory over Russia, a result that was widely labeled an upset even though the Finns were the team coming off a bye. They'll face a serious test from a Swedish team that cruised to an unbeaten record in Group C before trouncing Slovenia in quarterfinal action. Both teams have a plus-10 goal differential so far, tied for second-best in the competition.

United States vs. Canada (-128)

Anyone who has watched the Olympic tournament must be wondering how the Canadians come into their semifinal matchup with the rival Americans as the favorites. Canada edged Latvia 2-1 - needing a third-period goal from Shea Weber to advance - while the U.S. punched its ticket to the medal round with a convincing 5-2 triumph over the Czech Republic. The Americans have steadily improved throughout the competition, while the Canadians have not - and will be without star center John Tavares, who suffered torn knee ligaments.

Hamlin, Kenseth win Daytona qualifying Duels

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A last-lap melee behind leader Denny Hamlin allowed Hamlin to cruise to victory in the second Budweiser Duel qualifying race Thursday night at Daytona International Speedway.

On the final lap, Hamlin blocked a move by Kurt Busch, who tried to go low to get around Hamlin. As the cars went two-wide behind the front two, six-time Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson ran out of gas as the pack exited the fourth turn. As Johnson slowed dramatically, he was hit by Jamie McMurray to trigger the multi-car accident.

Clint Bowyer flipped over completely during the melee, and Michael Waltrip slammed head-on into pit road. However, all drivers were able to climb out of their battered cars unhurt.

Jeff Gordon slipped by Busch to finish second, with Paul Menard finishing fourth.

Brian Scott finished sixth, followed by Trevor Bayne, rookie Kyle Larson, Martin Truex Jr., Landon Cassill and Bowyer, who was able to cross the finish line after his wild ride.

Just moments after the start of the second race, NASCAR announced that Kevin Harvick, who finished second in the first of the two Budweiser Duel qualifying races, failed inspection.

In the post-race inspection, Harvick was ruled to have exceeded the split on the track bar, and he was dropped to 24th and last in the final rundown.

Kasey Kahne was moved from third to second, and he will start fifth in the Daytona 500.

Because the infraction took place in a qualifying race, not a points race, Harvick will be allowed to start the 500 but at the back of the pack -- not fifth.

Brad Keselowski, who started third in the second qualifying race, quickly took command of the lead as he dominated the first half of the race.

Once he went to the front, the race turned into another single-file affair as the top 12 cars pulled away from the rest of the 24-car field.

Larson finally pulled the second pack back to the first park as the race hit the 25-lap mark.

The top-five at the halfway mark of the 60-lap event were Keselowski, Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, Brian Scott and Kurt Busch.

Matt Kenseth held off Harvick and Kahne for the win in a three-wide battle at the end of the first Duel qualifying race Thursday.

At the same time, there were four cars battling for the 15th and final transfer spot to earn a spot in the Daytona 500, and rookie Alex Bowman won with battle. Bowman, 20, will make his first start in the Great American Race.

Harvick waited until the fourth turn on the last lap to try to get past Kenseth. For a moment, he had the lead, but Kenseth regained the top spot at the finish line with Kahne diving below the both of them in an attempt to win the race.

Marcos Ambrose finished fourth, and he was followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Josh Wise, Aric Almirola, AJ Allmendinger, David Gilliland, Ryan Newman, Tony Stewart, Cole Whitt, Greg Biffle, Danica Patrick and Bowman.

NOTES: Six drivers had to go to a backup car for the two races after being involved in a multi-car accident in the next-to-last practice session Wednesday. They were Brian Vickers, Joey Logano, Paul Menard, Dave Blaney, Ryan Truex and Parker Kligerman. Kligerman's car ended on its roof during the accident. "It's the first time I ever flipped over," Kligerman said. "I've never done that before in a race car. I assumed that it would be rougher, but was actually really soft. I saw the whole thing go down. I'm up in the fence kind of floating along and thankfully none of the fans got injured." Kligerman's car hit the front grandstand catch fence at almost the same spot where parts of a car flew through the catch fence during the last-lap crash in last February's Nationwide race. More than 25 fans were injured in that accident. No one was hurt Wednesday. Track spokesman Lenny Santiago said Wednesday "the (new) fence performed the way it was designed to. We replaced one cable and some of the mesh fencing that was affected." The repairs took only an hour and did not delay the final practice session held Wednesday evening.

Team owner Richard Childress kept the number inactive until grandson Austin Dillon was ready for his first full season in NASCAR Sprint Cup racing. Dillon responded last Sunday by winning the pole for the 56th running of the Great American Race.
