    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six of the best minor league prospects of the St Louis Cardinals........

    1) Oscar Taveras, OF-- Hit .306 in 173 ABs in AAA LY.

    2) Carlos Martinez, P-- Had 5.08 ERA in 28 IP in bigs LY.

    3) Kolten Wong, 2B-- Is he ready to be the every day 2B?

    10) Randal Grichuk, OF-- Angels took him ahead of Trout in '09 draft.

    16) Mike O'Neill, OF-- USC alum; .328 BA in 1,104 minor league ABs

    22) Lee Stoppleman, P-- Good name for a young closer.

    *****

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

    13) Olympic hockey does shootouts differently than NHL, letting same shooter go multiple times, once three players have gone, where in the NHL, each player is only allowed to shoot once.

Like the NHL system better, makes it more of a team game and puts strategy into the coach's decisions as to who shoots when.

    12) Florida 69, Kentucky 59-- Kentucky led 48-47 with 8:14 left, when the ref gave John Calipari a technical foul-- Wildcats never led again, as Florida wins at Tennessee/Kentucky in same week. That doesn't happen much.

    11) Syracuse 56, NC State 55-- Wolfpack gagged this game away, getting trapped in corner twice in last minute when they had ball and the lead. This was 7th time this season Syracuse has been tied/trailed in last 5:00, but they are still unbeaten, with a trip to Duke coming up Saturday.

    10) Wyoming 46, San Jose State 38-- Spartans were outscored 20-9 in the second half, which may help explain why they're 0-13 in Mountain West. Not sure why Wyoming has turned into a slowball team, but they have-- it takes a little more effort to go to their home games in Laramie, not sure fans are going to want to drive thru winter weather to watch 46-38 games.

    9) Yale 66, Princeton 65 ot-- Bulldogs were down 11 at half, rallied to win and stay tied for Ivy lead with Harvard at 7-1. No conference tournament in Ivy League and Yale already beat Crimson once-- rematch is at Yale.

    8) Purdue 82, Indiana 64-- Wheels have fallen off for Hoosiers, who had a sub arrested for DUI late in week; they've lost six of last eight games, are 0-4 in last four games on the road- they host Iowa next.

    7) ESPN's Joe Lunardi does good work with projecting who will be in the NCAA tournament, but ESPN uses his stuff way too much, like his word is official or something. "Oh, if BYU wins here, they'll be in the field of 68".

Please stop. Don't need this during every TV game for the next month.

    6) Recruiting rankings aren't worth the paper they're written on; during the K-State-Baylor game, kid on Kansas State stole the ball and dunked in traffic, and the TV analyst yells about how coaches need to go out and see kids play, since this player was only a three-star recruit.

Recruiting analysts can't possibly see every player enough to make sound judgments on those kids. Players slip through the cracks, and sharp coaches find those kids, develop their skills and win a lot of games.

    5) Matt Garza took $2M less to sign with Milwaukee than the Angels, and that seems odd, unless he doesn't want to face the DH. You'd think Angels have a better chance to be contenders than the Brewers do.

    4) Arizona State's students need some lessons on how to act at games; couple of them spit on Oregon's coaches last week, one threw a cardboard cutout on the court Friday night after a shaky call by the refs, then 1,000 of them rushed the court when they upset Arizona, only there was still 0:00.5 left to play and they could've (but didn't) get a technical foul. Oy.

    3) Certain things are amusing, others are funny, some are really funny, then there is the thing on my tax return that asks if I'd like to contribute $3 to the Presidential election campaign funds. Um, no thanks.

    2) Upset of Day: Reggie Theus' Cal-Northridge Matadors (+13) won 80-78 in OT at Santa Barbara, Matadors' 4th OT game in their last six.

    1) Bad Beat of the Day-- Kansas State (+4.5) had Baylor beat in regulation, but Bears hit a desperation trey at buzzer to send game to OT, then won by 14 in second overtime. If you had K-State in this game, it was a bitter loss.

      Sunday's Olympic hockey cheat sheet

      Here's a look at Sunday's Olympic men's hockey action (odds courtesy Bet365):

      Austria vs. Norway (-286)

Third place in Group B is at stake when the Austrians and Norwegians tangle in the first game of the day. Neither team has fared all that well so far, with Norway showing less of a propensity for giving up goals - surrendering a modest nine in losses to Canada and Finland - while the Austrians have scored twice as many goals - 4 to 2 - but have given up a whopping 14 to date. Austria boasts more firepower up front thanks largely to New York Islanders teammates Thomas Vanek and Michael Grabner, but have struggled mightily in their own zone.

      Russia vs. Slovakia (+580)

The host Russians will be out for blood after dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 shootout decision over the United States in a game that essentially decided top spot in Group A. The defeat will make the path to gold that much tougher for Russia, but it gets a bit of a reprieve in its round-robin finale against a disappointing Slovakian side that has dropped its first two games by a combined score of 10-2. Neither Peter Budaj nor Jaroslav Halak has looked good at all in net for Slovakia, while the offense was virtually non-existent in its stunning 3-1 loss to Slovenia.

      Slovenia vs. United States (-10000)

The Americans are riding high following the thrilling victory over Russia, and can complete a perfect round-robin with a victory over Slovenia. T.J. Oshie was the hero in the shootout, thanks to an Olympic format that allows a team to use the same shooter anytime after the third round of the sudden-death format. The Slovenians have already earned their "gold medal", having earned their first-ever Olympic victory with their triumph over Slovakia; they'll be hard-pressed to repeat the feat against a U.S. side playing the best hockey of any team in the competition.

      Finland vs. Canada (-400)

The final matchup of the preliminary round will determine which team prevails in Group B. Canada took a while to get going, but rolled to an easy victory over the Austrians on Friday and has surrendered just one goal through the first 120 minutes of play. Finland has been just as impressive so far, tallying 14 times in easy victories over Norway and Austria. Expect both teams to roll with their top netminders for the must-win contest, with Tuukka Rask getting the call for Finland and Roberto Luongo favored slightly over Carey Price in the Canadian net.

        NBA All-Star Game betting preview

Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference (-4.5, 292.5)

New Orleans is, once again, host to the NBA’s biggest party between the best from the Western and Eastern Conferences.

The last time the Big Easy hosted the annual showdown was in 2008 when the Western Conference, pegged as 5.5-point home favorites, beat their Eastern counterparts 134-128 on a 262-point total. Despite the loss, the East’s LeBron James won his second MVP trophy, amassing 27 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists.

Overall, the West has dominated this matchup over the last decade, going 7-3 SU. The average margin of victory over this span, whether it’s the West or East, has been 8.5 points but has not been much closer recently with five points being the largest margin of victory over the last four meetings. The average points scored has been 271.5 with that number ballooning to over 288 points over the last four.

        TV:
        8 p.m. EST, TNT

        LINE HISTORY:
Depending on the book, the West opened as 3.5 to 4.5-point favorites. The total opened at 292.5.

        MVP ODDS:
Red-hot Kevin Durant is the fave to win MVP honors with current odds at +300. LeBron James follows closely at +325.

        INJURY WATCH:
Reports say Houston guard James Harden is replacing L.A.’s Kobe Bryant in the West’s starting lineup.

        WHY BET THE EASTERN CONFERENCE:
There is no disputing the Western Conference’s dominance over the East this season but the players might just see this as a chance for the East to silence the naysayers if only for a day. Furthermore, some pundits have been quietly saying talking Kevin Durant is now the best player in the game, which won’t go unnoticed by LeBron James. And if “The King:” is motivated I’m not sure an army of All-Stars could stop him.

        WHY BET THE WESTERN CONFERENCE:
This is a game about offense and the West has a little more offensive depth to their team than the East. If it’s not Kevin Durant, then it’s Steph Curry. If it’s not Curry, then it’s James Harden. Anyways, you get the picture. As well, don’t rule out the fact the game is being played in a Western Conference city and when Anthony Davis is on the floor you can expect the crowd support to boost the rest of his teammates.

        TRENDS:

        * The West has won four of the last five meetings straight up and covered in five of the last seven (5-1-1 ATS) All-Star Games.
        * The East holds a 37-25 all-time SU advantage in the event.
        * The over is also an impressive 5-1-1 in the last six All-Star games. Last year was the first time the under played as books set a 295-point total – the highest total bettors had seen in this game in over five years.
        * The only player to win All-Star MVP in the last 10 years who wasn’t a starter in the game was Shaquille O’Neal who was named the game’s best player in 2004 and again in 2009.

Game of the Day: Villanova at Creighton
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Villanova Wildcats at Creighton Bluejays (-3.5)

In its first meeting against Villanova on Jan. 20, Creighton drilled a Big East- and school-record 21 3-pointers while handing the Wildcats their worst home loss since 1980-81. No. 6 Villanova, which hits the road Sunday in a showdown between the top two teams in the conference, holds a half-game lead over the 17th-ranked Bluejays and has won six straight since their 28-point setback. "I think a lot of people watched that game and learned how not to play them," Wildcats coach Jay Wright said.

Wright suggested the Wildcats’ overall aggressiveness worked against them in the first meeting and perhaps no Creighton player benefited more than Ethan Wragge, who tied a school record with nine 3-pointers. Villanova began its three-game road trip with an 87-62 win over DePaul on Wednesday, but faces a difficult challenge against the Bluejays, who have won four of five since routing the Wildcats. Creighton, which posted a 20-win season for the 16th time in 17 years with Thursday’s five-point win at Butler, is looking for its 16th straight home victory.

                  TV:
                  5 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

                  LINE HISTORY:
The Bluejays opened as 3.5-point home faves.

                  POWER RANKINGS:
                  Villanova (-16.4) - Creighton (-14.3) + Home Court (-3.0) = Creighton -0.9

                  INJURY WATCH:
                  N/A

                  WHY BET VILLANOVA (22-2 SU, 17-5 ATS, 15-7 O/U):
The Wildcats took a page out of the Bluejays’ book in the win over DePaul, knocking down a season-high 15 3-pointers while leaving Wright pleased with his team’s focus. “I know they're going to concentrate on (Sunday), but for a team to go in and concentrate like they did against DePaul is impressive to me," Wright told the school’s official website. Villanova has also picked it up at the defensive end, allowing 61.4 points over its last five games after surrendering 96 to Creighton and 85 five days later at Marquette.

                  WHY BET CREIGHTON (20-4 SU, 13-9 ATS, 8-13 O/U):
In addition to passing Allan Houston and Kevin Bradshaw on the NCAA's career scoring list against Butler, Doug McDermott delivered his second game-winning basket in the Bluejays’ last three games and third of the season after never having done so previously. Incidentally, McDermott’s go-ahead 3-pointer sparked a game-ending 7-0 run and gave coach Greg McDermott (Doug’s father) his 100th career win at Creighton. Greg McDermott needed only 134 games to do so, allowing him to reach the benchmark quicker than all but one coach in school history.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Wildcats are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games.
                  * Bluejays are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.
                  * Wildcats are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 vs. Big East.
                  * Bluejays are 30-10 ATS in their last 40 Sunday games.

If you're looking for an underdog play in college basketball action Sunday, consider the Wisconsin Badgers.

The Underdog is 5-0 ATS in the previous five meetings between the Badgers and the Michigan Wolverines.

The two will renew acquaintances at Michigan Sunday with the Badgers as 4.5-point road dogs.

                          NASCAR number: Countdown to Daytona

There are seven days remaining before the 2014 Daytona 500; hence, the number for today is:

7: The record number of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships won by Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt. This year, Jimmie Johnson will attempt to join that exclusive club, as he tries for a seventh title under a radically new Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup format -- a system that expands the field from 12 to 16 drivers and eliminates four competitors after every third Chase race. Johnson won a record five straight championships from 2006-2010 and added another in 2013. He is also the defending winner of the Daytona 500.
