    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six of the best minor league prospects of the Tampa Bay Rays

    1) Jake Odorizzi, P-- Big prospect acquired in Shields trade.

    2) Hak Ju-Lee, SS-- Was 19-45 in AAA before tearing up his knee.

    4) Enny Romero, P-- Has 267 walks in 518 minor league IP. Oy.

    5) Alex Colome, P-- Allowed four runs in 16 IP in three MLB starts.

    9) Tim Beckham, 2B/SS-- Top pick in '08 draft is rehabbing bum knee.

    29) Curt Casali, C-- Vanderbilt catcher hit .383 in half a year in AA.

    *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

    13) Think Marcus Smart's 3-game suspension is a little steep, but most people seem OK with it. Can't understand why the guy in the stands was yelling at him; Texas Tech was going to win-- why yell at a college kid who is going to be a multi-millionaire at this time next year?

    12) Michael Carter-Williams was the 11th pick in last summer's NBA draft; he seems like a lock for Rookie of Year, making him first ROY since Mark Jackson in 1987 who was drafted 10th or later. Jackson was pick #18.

    11) Golfer Jimmy Walker has won $3,605,833 in his last eight tournaments; in his first 187 tournaments, he won $7,298,429.

    10) Walker was 18th golfer in last 18 years to have a 6+-shot lead after three rounds of a PGA tournament; only two of those 18 lost the tournament.

    9) I love my IPhone, but could live without auto-correct for my spelling; sometimes it corrects things that don't need correcting, like names.

    8) Memphis Grizzlies won Saturday night while taking only one foul shot, the first NBA team to ever do that. Hard to imagine a team winning a game where they took 90 shots from the floor, but only one free throw.

    7) Tough week for the Charleston Cougars; they lost in OT at Towson on Saturday, after losing by 3 at Delaware Wednesday, when they led by 20 with 8:50 left in the game.

    6) I'm guessing the NFL team that winds up with Michael Sam won't be signing former Dolphins' bully Richie Incognito as a free agent. Just a guess.

    5) Knicks were 31-10 at home LY, are 12-17 this year; you look at their team and wonder why they've regressed so much? The roster isn't a whole lot different than LY, when they were 54-28. Mike Woodson will get fired soon, which won't help anything- they need to purge their roster, start over.

It wouldn't take that long to rebuild, but they would have to bite the bullet with one dreadful season. No one thinks New Yorkers would tolerate that, but they want to win and would understand a smart rebuilding approach.

    4) Wisconsin 60, Michigan State 58-- Gary Harris was 3-20 from floor, 0-7 from arc, as Appling sat out. Willl the Spartans ever get healthy? Badgers snapped a 3-game home losing streak.

    3) When Indians' pitcher Vinnie Restano and the Tribe wound up in an arbitration hearing last week, it was Cleveland's first arbitration hearing since 1991, which doesn't seem possible, but it is true.

    2) Magic 93, Pacers 92-- Big week for Orlando, beating Thunder/Pacers at home; they've now won their last five home games.

    1) Hearing more and more clamoring for a lower shot clock in college hoop; that will create more possessions, but more bad possessions, with ton of bad shots taken at the end of the shot clock. Look at how many bad shots there are in NBA games, but those players are so skilled, they make 'em.

College games are likely to become two-hour rebounding contests, with less talented players taking forced shots dictated by shot clock running out.

Game of the Day: Kansas at Kansas State
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas Jayhawks at Kansas State Wildcats (-3,5, OFF)

Ninth-ranked Kansas attempts to match its recent performance against Kansas State when the Jayhawks venture west to face the Wildcats in Monday’s Big 12 contest. The first-place Jayhawks have won nine of their last 10 games and one of the victories was an 86-60 demolition of Kansas State on Jan. 11. The Wildcats are tied for fourth place in the conference race and enter the rematch on a high note after routing red-hot Texas 74-57 on Saturday.

Freshman guard Marcus Foster poured in 34 points in the victory over the Longhorns, the most by a Kansas State freshman since Michael Beasley scored 39 against the Jayhawks late in the 2007-08 campaign. Kansas shot 56.1 percent from the field and committed just seven turnovers in last month’s victory over the Wildcats, but coach Bill Self sees no carryover effect. “I’m sure that they’re doing some things a little differently than they did the first game,” Self said after Saturday’s victory over West Virginia. “I really think the score of the first game is totally irrelevant.”

            TV:
            9 p.m. ET, ESPN

            LINE HISTORY:
The line opened with Kansas as 3.5-point faves. The total is currently off the board.

            POWER RANKINGS:
            Kansas (-16.9) - Kansas State (-9.3) + home court (-3) = Kansas -4.3

            INJURY WATCH:
Kansas: Conner Frankamp (Questionable, knee). Kansas State: N/A.

WHY BET KANSAS (18-5, 12-10-1 ATS):
The Jayhawks are expecting to see an angry bunch of Wildcats after the beatdown they delivered on Kansas State in Lawrence. “I feel like going in, we’re expecting the worst, expecting a hostile environment, expecting not to get any calls,” guard Wayne Selden Jr. told reporters. “But we’ll battle through it.” Selden scored 17 points and made five 3-pointers in the victory over West Virginia and has raised his average to 10.5, fourth on the team behind guard Andrew Wiggins (16 per game), forward Perry Ellis (13) and center Joel Embiid (10.9).

WHY BET KANSAS STATE (16-7, 13-7-1 ATS):
Foster made 13-of-16 shots in his epic performance against Texas to raise his team-best scoring average to 14.7. That type of efficiency was pleasing to the coaching staff as well as Foster as the talented guard was shooting just 40.1 percent entering the contest. “Just going back through film, I realize I take some questionable shots,” Foster said after joining Beasley and Mike Evans (1974-75) as the only Kansas State freshmen to score 30 in a game. “I just wanted to limit the questionable shots and take better shots.”

            TRENDS:

            * Home team is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
            * Kansas is 11-3 ATS in the last 14 meetings at Kansas State.
            * Kansas is 26-8 ATS in the last 34 meetings.
            * Favorite is 26-8 ATS in the last 34 meetings.

Handicapping NBA head coaches on the hot seat
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are nearing the NBA’s All-Star break and just passed the midway point in terms of games played - also known as hunting season when it comes to NBA head coaches on the hot seat and we have already lost one coach in Detroit's former bench boss Maurice Cheeks. Sometimes a hot seat can push a coach and his team, giving them added line value. Other times, players quit on their coach and it burns everything to the ground – including your bankroll.

Covers looks at four coaches who may be getting the pink slip sooner rather than later. And the one big thing these guys all have in common is a sub .500 ATS record, with the four teams below combining to go 85-112-1 ATS - covering just 43 percent of the time.

              Mike Woodson (New York Knicks)

              Record: 19-30 SU, 20-29 ATS

If you believe reports circulating over the last couple of days, the time on Mike Woodson’s tenure could be over before next week's All-Star break. The New York Daily News says owner James Dolan met with Woodson following the team’s loss to the Portland Trail Blazers and a recent loss to the Milwaukee Bucks may have been the final nail for a team floundering at 19-30 with the league’s second-highest payroll.

              Mike Brown (Cleveland Cavaliers)

              Record: 16-33 SU, 19-30 ATS

When your starting point guard is asked if the team has quit on you, it doesn’t bode well for your future. Neither does a team allowing 102.5 points per game, including 119 and 124 points back-to-back, when you have hung your career on being a defensive guru. Now that the GM who hired you has been fired, no one can imagine Mike Brown’s second-stint in charge of the Cavs ending in anything but tears (for him).

              Brett Brown (Philadelphia 76ers)

              Record: 15-35 SU, 20-30 ATS

By the sounds of things, Brown may quit before he is fired after telling reporters the 76ers rebuilding process is, “much harder," and “something that I didn't judge properly.” There’s no doubt Philly is in tank mode but those recent comments may have Sixers brass rethinking their choice of a head coach who will help them rebuild in a very unforgiving market.

              Marc Jackson (Golden State Warriors)

              Record: 30-20 SU, 22-26-2 ATS

Jackson has overachieved as head coach of Golden State until now. But this NBA gig is all about “what have you done for me lately”. After spending money in the offseason and looking like a contender early on, the Warriors are now falling down the Western Conference playoff picture. It would be surprising to see the club dump such a popular coach but it wouldn’t be smart to bet against it if the team keeps sliding.

                  NASCAR number: Countdown to Daytona

Compiled Jan. 30 - Feb. 9 Should update daily

There are 14 days remaining before the 2014 Daytona 500; hence, the number for today is:

14: The number of laps led by Dale Earnhardt Jr. in winning his 2004 qualifying race at Daytona International Speedway. That was the last year the races now known as the Budweiser Duels at Daytona were contested at 125 miles instead of the current 150 miles. Earnhardt went on to win the Daytona 500 that year, the first of a single-season career-best six victories. This year, the Duels will be run under the lights for the first time, on Thursday, Feb. 20.

There are 15 days remaining before the 2014 Daytona 500; hence, the number for today is:

15: Jeff Gordon's starting position for the 2005 Daytona 500, in what would become the most recent of his three victories in the Great American Race. That event marked the first and only time a driver had won the most prestigious NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event from 15th on the grid since Lee Petty triumphed in a photo finish in 1959, the first running of the race. In his other two Daytona 500 wins, Gordon started sixth (1997) and first (1999).

There are 16 days remaining before the 2014 Daytona 500; hence, the number for today is:

16: The track-record number of cautions in the 2011 Daytona 500, the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race governed by a new one-point-per-position scoring system introduced by the sanctioning body before the start of the season. Trevor Bayne took the lead on the first attempt at a green-white-checkered-flag finish, after fellow Ford driver David Ragan was black-flagged for changing lanes before the start/finish line on a Lap 203 restart. It took a second green-white-checker and 208 laps total to decide the outcome, with Bayne holding off runner-up Carl Edwards by .118 seconds to become the youngest Daytona 500 winner ever one day after turning 20.

There are 17 days remaining before the 2014 Daytona 500; hence, the number for today is:

17: The number of laps led by Jimmie Johnson in the 2013 Daytona 500, as the six-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion charged to his second victory in the Great American Race. Johnson took the point on four different occasions, including the final 10 laps of the 200-lap event at Daytona International Speedway.

As he did after his first Daytona 500 win in 2006, Johnson went on to win the series title. In addition, with a July victory in the Coke Zero 400 at the 2.5-mile superspeedway, Johnson became the fifth driver to win both NASCAR Sprint Cup races at Daytona in the same season, joining Fireball Roberts, Cale Yarborough, LeeRoy Yarbrough and Bobby Allison in that exclusive club.

There are 24 days remaining before the 2014 Daytona 500; hence, the number for today is:

24: The car number driven by Jeff Gordon to all 88 of his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victories, including six wins at Daytona International Speedway and three in the Daytona 500. Gordon's first victory at the 2.5-mile superspeedway came in July 1995, during the first of his four championship seasons. His last victory at the Birthplace of Speed came in February 2005, when he won the Daytona 500. That race ended in a green-white-checkered-flag finish and was the first at Daytona to go beyond its scheduled distance because of NASCAR's new overtime rules.

For the week of Feb. 3-9

Hottest ATS - Dallas Mavericks (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS)

The Mavericks have waited all season to get hot, and finally did - surging into a comfortable spot in the Western Conference's top-8. Dallas didn't just win all four of its games last week, it won big - defeating Cleveland, Memphis, Utah and Boston by double digits while averaging nearly 110 points in the process. Dirk Nowitzki was the catalyst as usual, recording at least 20 points in every game during the Mavericks' five-game winning streak.

Coldest ATS - Atlanta Hawks (0-3 SU, 0-3 ATS)

After averaging 122.5 points in back-to-back wins over Philadelphia and Minnesota, the Hawks' offense fell flat last week. Atlanta ran into a brick wall in Indiana, scoring just 85 points in a narrow loss before coming up just short against the New Orleans Pelicans and managing a season-low 76 points in a setback against visiting Memphis. Point guard Jeff Teague has struggled the most during the skid, averaging just 9.3 points per game on 38 percent shooting from the field.

Best Over play - Phoenix Suns (1-2 SU, 3-0 O/U)

The surprising Suns remain one of the best over best in the Western Conference following another high-scoring week. After opening with a 101-92 loss to the Chicago Bulls, the Suns dropped a 122-108 decision to the Houston Rockets before bouncing back nicely in a 122-109 triumph over Golden State. Point guard Goran Dragic fueled the Phoenix offense over that three-game stretch, averaging 27 points and 6.3 assists while shooting a red-hot 61 percent.

Best Under play - Utah Jazz (1-2 SU, 0-3 O/U)

Consistency was also the name of the game in Salt Lake City, where the Jazz extended its under streak to five games with a dreadful offensive stretch. Utah kicked things off with a listless 94-79 loss to visiting Toronto, then traveled to Dallas for a 104-83 trouncing at the hands of the Mavericks before recovering to stun the Miami Heat 94-89. The under is 7-2-1 in the Jazz's last 10 games, and without a go-to scoring option that trend is a good bet to continue.

                            Surveying the schedule

Teams have condensed schedules this week with the All-Star Game and accompanying festivities set for this weekend. The Miami Heat have the most intriguing schedule of any East team, facing the Suns in Phoenix on Tuesday before ending its pre-All-Star schedule with a game against the host Golden State Warriors the following night. Expect both games to be high-scoring affairs.
