    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Six of the top minor league prospects of the Toronto Blue Jays:

    1) Aaron Sanchez, P-- Walked 91 hitters in 176 IP the last two years.

    2) Marcus Stroman, P-- 1.13 WHIP in Eastern League LY; tough kid.

    10) Sean Nolin, P-- He and Stroman are only two of Jays' top 10 prospects who have played above Class A level.

    14) AJ Jimenez, C-- Toronto always seems to produce lot of catchers.

    20) Kevin Pillar, OF-- Signed for $1,000 in 2011, already has 106 at-bats in the major leagues (hit .206).

    21) John Stilson, P-- Groomed as a reliever at Texas A&M.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here......

    13) OK, there is this NBA rule I never knew about that says a team can’t play with four guys on the court; if players get hurt/foul out, you can bring back a guy who fouls out, only every foul he gets from that point on is also a technical, kind of like the anti-DQ rule the ABA used to have.

Lakers used Robert Sacre like this at the end of their game in Cleveland Wednesday, rather than put Steve Nash in, who was there and in uniform, but they didn't use him because he played the night before in his first game back from injury. Lakers started game with eight healthy guys, not counting Nash, but they still scored 70 in first half and won easily, which is probably why the Cavaliers fired their GM Thursday.

    12) From what you read, the Cavaliers are a train wreck off the court; not much respect for the new coach. Curious to see who they bring in as the new GM. Lot of people seemed to think Cleveland had a good nucleus of talent that might’ve been enough to lure Lebron James back to Ohio to finish his career. Now? Not so much.

    11) There was a D-III college game Wednesday where Thiel beat St Vincent 124-121 in four overtimes; no such anti-DQ rule in college ranks. Thiel won despite playing the 4th OT with four guys. 11 players fouled out of this epic marathon.

    10) Must have been a full moon Wednesday: VMI beat Gardner-Webb 108-104 in four OTs; kid named Tyrell Nelson had 24 points, 25 boards for G-W and he didn’t even start. At least both sides finished with five guys.

    10) Whats up with Boise State? Veteran team, good perimeter players, but they melted down at end of last two games and blew double digit leads to UNLV, San Diego State. At UNLV, Broncos fell apart as soon as Drmic fouled out; against the Aztecs, they stopped defending the arc late in the game and a guy who was 10-37 on 3-pointers for the year beat them with a trey with 0:05 left. Tough loss.

    9) My Signing Day highlight was when the camera was on at LSU and the #1 WR in the country announced he was going to play for the Tigers—mascot Mike the Tiger rushes into the room, hugs coach Les Miles and gives him multiple high 5’s. Nothing like a happy mascot on Signing Day.

    8) Jets hired a new special teams coach, Thomas McGaughey from LSU, who was in Baton Rouge for three years. Mike the Tiger might not be quite so happy about that move.

    7) This is Carmelo Anthony’s 11th year in NBA; his teams’ career record in playoff games: 23-44, with three series wins out of 13 played.

Oddity that means nothing: Anthony has never played in a Game 7 of a playoff series.

    6) CBS will be showing eight of the Thursday night games the NFL Network had shown previously. Doesn’t change much for most people, just means better announcers and probably a few more commercials- there always seem to be a few more commercials.

    5) Get well soon wishes to Wyoming hoop coach Larry Shyatt, who missed his third game Wednesday with a viral infection- the assistant coach who handled the scouting for that particular opponent have coached the games in Shyatt’s absence.

    4) The son of NC State coach Matt Gottfried is coming to Albany to play hoop for Siena, which doesn’t have a scholarship open for next year. Seeing as Gottfried Sr makes $1.95M a year, he can afford to pay tuition for a year, until a scholarship opens for his son in 2015-16.

    3) I'm no Mel Kiper Jr, but I'd bet anyone $10 that Johnny Manziel will wind up as a better pro than Blake Bortles of Central Florida.

    2) Mike Emrick is broadcasting Olympic hockey, good news for listeners. Emrick doing hockey is the best announcing experience in all of sports.

    1) RIP Mr Ralph Kiner, who passed away Thursday at age 91; he was a Hall of Fame slugger who lived a Hall of Fame life, having dated Elizabeth Taylor, been engaged to Janet Leigh and broadcast Met games for 50+ years.

He was living proof you could be a big star and a nice person. RIP, sir.

Where the action is: Most popular 2014 Winter Olympic bets

The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games officially get underway Friday, but online sportsbooks have been taking wagers on the Winter Games for some time now.

With the event fields locked in, and more and more information coming out on current conditions and form, betting action on Sochi 2014 is heating up. We talk to Aron Black of Bet365.com about the most popular plays for Olympic bettors.

      Alpine Skiing

      Men’s Downhill Outright

Aksel Lund Svindal is the biggest name in alpine skiing, and heads into his events among the favorites – if not the overall chalk. The defending Gold Medal winner is set at +160 to repeat in the men’s downhill, and has drawn the most action from bettors so far.

Erik Guay is a bit of a wild card for bettors. The Canadian has been discounted to +900 due to his recent knee surgery but could provide solid underdog value in the men’s downhill.

“Given his shortened season recovering from knee surgery, he’s done what he’s needed to get to the Olympics,” Black tells Covers. “But if fit, as he is supposed to be, he’s always a threat for the podium at least. The bulk of the action comes from Canadian support.”

      Cross Country Skiing

      15 km Interval Classic

This event is a lot more wide open than most, with defending Swiss gold medalist Dario Cologna and Russian Alexey Poltaranin topping the board at +400. Cologna is coming off injury, keeping bettors cautious, and more of the early action has been on the home-country hopeful.

Black says one of the biggest line adjustments for this event was the price on Swedish skier Johan Olsson, who opened +500 but watch his price jump to as high as +1,400, due to injury concerns and recent poor results. Olsson took two bronze and was part of the gold-medal winner 4x10 km relay team in Vancouver 2010.

      4x10 km Mix Relay

Norway is king when it comes to cross country skiing with the men’s and women’s side both among the medal favorites in most event. The men’s team is priced as a -250 fave to win the 4x10-km Mix Relay, but that price hasn’t scared off bettors.

“One of the bankers of the games for many punters will be the men’s team from Norway,” says Black. "They’re a very much justified -250, with three of the top four - first, second, fourth - and another member is ninth in the overall rankings being part of the team.”

      Luge

      Men’s Singles

You haven’t wagered until you’ve wagered on people flying down an ice track at speeds of up to 140 km per hour. However, due to the tragic death of a luger in Vancouver 2010, the Sochi course has taken extra precautions to slow down competitors.

Defending gold medal winner, Germany’s Felix Loch, has grabbed the overwhelming support of bettors, with his odds to repeat at -200. The Germans have dominated the Olympic luge and oddsmakers see that trend continuing at Sochi.

      Women’s Singles

Germany’s Natalie Geisenberger is about as close to a sure thing at the Olympic Games as there is, and books have her priced as such. The 2013 World Champion, who took bronze in Vancouver, has the highest price tag of any Olympic bet at -800.

“It’s pretty much if she finishes the course she should win,” says Black. “She’s one of the most dominant athletes in world sport this year. The German luge star was a bronze medalist in the last Olympics, but is the defending World Champ and has seven wins this season.”

      Snowboarding

      Men’s Halfpipe

The biggest name in snowboarding, USA’s Shaun White, is a -250 favorite to defend his Olympic gold medal from 2010 in the halfpipe. However, the “Flying Tomato” made waves this week when he withdrew from the slopestyle event after injuring his wrist. Could that injury open the door for value on the rest of the halfpipe field?

“He’s a worthy favorite, but depending on how his wrist holds up, he may struggle with any falls,” says Black. “He has very good competition, regardless of any injury, in “I-Pod” Iouri Podladthcikov (+550) and Danny Davis (+600). With the popularity of snowboarding in numerous countries, it will be one of the more popular viewing events.”

Game of the Day: Trail Blazers at Pacers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Portland Trail Blazers at Indiana Pacers (-5.5, 195)

If the Portland Trail Blazers thought their offensive struggles were bad in their previous four games, they could be in for a jarring surprise Friday night as they visit the Indiana Pacers in a meeting between the NBA's top offense and No. 1 defense. The Trail Blazers have been the class of the NBA in the scoring department, but have failed to crack 95 points in three of their last four games. Indiana will provide a stiff test, allowing a league-low 90.2 points per game.

The Blazers didn't need to reach their 107.7-points-per-game average in their last encounter, doing just enough to slip past the host New York Knicks 94-90. Nicolas Batum's 20 points and 10 rebounds made the difference on a night where fringe MVP candidate LaMarcus Aldridge struggled with his shot and the Portland bench shot just 5-of-16 from the floor. Indiana has won three straight games and is a league-best 23-2 at Bankers Life Stadium so far.

                    TV:
7 p.m. ET, ESPN, CSNW (Portland), FSIN (Indiana)

                    LINE HISTORY:
The Pacers opened at -5.5 and have climbed to -6 at some books. The total has moved from 197 to 195.
                    POWER RANKINGS: Portland (-10.0) - Indiana (-14.0) + Home court (-3.0) = Indiana -7

                    INJURY WATCH:
Pacers - Lance Stephenson (Back - Questionable). Trail Blazers - None

                    WHY BET PORTLAND (35-14 SU, 26-23 ATS, 30-18-1 O/U):
Even the most casual NBA fan will recognize Portland point guard Damian Lillard as one of the most versatile at his position. He'll get a chance to show just how varied his skills are when he participates in what will be the busiest All-Star Weekend in league history. In addition to taking part in the All-Star Game, the rookie/sophomore and the skills challenge, Lillard has confirmed participation in the dunk contest and will also take part in the 3-point shootout.

                    WHY BET INDIANA (38-10 SU, 31-17 ATS, 19-28-1 O/U):
Indiana star Paul George will join Lillard in the dunk competition, but not everyone is happy about his participation. Teammate Roy Hibbert, who will also suit up for the Eastern Conference in the All-Star Game, doesn't think George should bother with the contest. "I don't think Paul should do it, to tell you the truth," Hibbert told the Indianapolis Star. "He's doing the stuff in the games to show why he could've won it two years ago. I think he's been there/done that."

                    TRENDS:

                    * Home team is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
                    * Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
                    * Under is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings.
                    * Trail Blazers are 5-14 ATS in the last 19 meetings.

                    CONSENSUS:
53 percent of bets are on the Pacers -5.5 while 54 percent are on the Under 195.

Rangers at Penguins: What bettors need to know
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins (-167, 5.5)

The New York Rangers hope to head into the Olympic break on a high note when they visit the Eastern Conference-leading Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday. New York had its season-high winning streak snapped at four games as it dropped a 2-1 decision to Edmonton on Thursday. Derick Brassard scored 22 seconds into the middle period to forge a tie, but Nail Yakupov tallied with 1:38 remaining in the third to hand the Rangers their third loss in five home games.

Pittsburgh is seeking its third consecutive victory and fifth in six games. The Penguins rolled to a 5-1 triumph at Buffalo on Wednesday as captain Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin each recorded a goal and an assist. Pittsburgh looks to complete the season series against New York with a third straight win after dropping the opener on Nov. 6.

                          TV:
7 p.m. ET, NHLN, MSG 2 (New York), ROOT (Pittsburgh)

                          ABOUT THE RANGERS (31-24-3):
Henrik Lundqvist has been sensational since suffering a 5-2 loss at Pittsburgh on Jan. 3, going 9-2-1 while allowing fewer than three goals in 10 of those contests - including both regulation losses. Rick Nash has cooled down considerably following a stretch during which he seemed unstoppable. The 29-year-old has been kept off the scoresheet in each of his last four games after a five-game goal-scoring streak that saw him tally seven times and has not registered an assist since Dec. 31.

                          ABOUT THE PENGUINS (40-15-2):
Wednesday's triumph over Buffalo was Pittsburgh 40th victory in just 57 games, marking the fastest it has reached the plateau in franchise history. Malkin has collected three goals and three assists during his four-game point streak but has just one assist in one meeting with the Rangers this season. Crosby's goal against the Sabres halted his five-game drought.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Rangers are 2-10 in the last 12 meetings.
                          * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                          * Rangers are 5-0 in their last five road games.
                          * Penguins are 17-5 in their last 22 vs. Metropolitan.

                          OVERTIME:

                          1. The Rangers totaled four goals in their two losses to Pittsburgh after posting a 5-1 victory in the series opener.

                          2. Crosby leads the league with 77 points - 12 more than New York Islanders captain John Tavares. With 49 assists, the superstar is one ahead of another captain in San Jose's Joe Thornton for tops in the NHL.

                          3. Brassard has collected three goals and four assists during his five-game point streak while New York LW Mats Zuccarello has registered two tallies and five assists on his five-game run.
