    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

We're going to be looking at Super Bowl props in this space for the next week. Here's a look at six more of them (LVH puts out a 44-page PDF of the props available). It covers pretty much everything........

-- Will Peyton Manning throw an INT? Yes: -$200, No -$175

-- Distance of first field goal of game: 33.5. Over, -$125, Under, +$105.

-- Longest field goal of game: 43.5. Over/under?

-- Shortest field goal of game: 24.5. Over, -$120, Under, even.

    -- Wes Welker's first reception, 7.5 yards: Over, -$130. Under -$110.

-- Distance of longest touchdown of game: 44.5 yards. Over/under?

Money must change hands on every play, especially early in the game.

    *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.....

    13) NBA has to start flexing their Sunday games; three games Sunday, half of the six teams they showed stink. Boston, New York and the Lakers are all awful teams. How about showing Indiana or Phoenix? They aren't the most glamorous teams, but they're very good and they're in the league, too.

    12) NBA cares deeply about marketing its stars, far less about marketing its teams. Thats what they've chosen to do, for better or worse.

    11) Want to win a bar bet? Denver LB Paris Lenon is last remaining player who played in the old XFL- he played for the Memphis Maniax, where his coach was Kippy Brown, who is now Seattle's WR coach.

    10) Clemson lost at North Carolina again, making them 0-57 in Chapel Hill, a ridiculously bad streak that may never end; in 2008, Tigers took UNC to double OT, but still got beat by ten that day. Tar Heels are not especially good this year- you'd think Clemson would've competed a little better.

    9) Paul Pierce was 10th player taken in the 1998 NBA Draft, not even the first Kansas Jayhawk taken; Raef LaFrentz was pick #3. First pick in the '98 draft was Michael Olowokandi. Drafting is an inexact science, for sure.

    8) Celtics are now 0-5 in games Rajon Rondo has played since coming back from his injury- their rebuilding job is a very big one.

    7) Quote of the Day, part 2: "That would've been great, if it went in."

The great Hubie Brown, commenting after Carmelo Anthony jacked up yet another fallaway jumper in transition, while he had a teammate open on the other side of the court. ESPN tends to be soft on Anthony, since most of the play/play guys on the network went to Syracuse, and he won them a national title in his only season there.

    6) Scott Stallings won the PGA Tournament in San Diego this week, even though he hit only four of 14 fairways Sunday- the man can putt. .

    5) I've done my fair share of Internet dating, so I'll say this about the TV commercials match.com is running: Don't be expecting one of those women in the commercials to show up for one of your dates. Ain't happening, but you might get a request for $595 from some nice woman in Nigeria. Uh huh.

    4) NFL issued over 5,000 media credentials for the Super Bowl; hell, even I could've gotten one. Wouldn't be too excited about sitting outside, though, at 6:30 at night on Ground Hog Day. For 3.5 hours. In New Jersey.

    3) Matt Garza got $50M for four years from Milwaukee; its gotten to the point where any veteran pitcher who doesn't make $12M a year is awful, or should fire his agent. Lot of teams don't think Garza's arm is healthy.

    2) CBS Sports reports there are five golfers in their 20's who have 3+ wins on the PGA Tour: Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson and Anthony Kim.

    1) UCLA 76, Cal 64-- Golden Bears came to LA 5-0 in Pac-12 play, left LA looking like a team that isn't very good. You're never as good as you look in your wins, never as bad as you look in your losses, but they looked awful this weekend. Curious to see them play at home this coming week.

Duke at Pittsburgh: What bettors need to know
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Duke Blue Devils at Pittsburgh Panthers (OFF)

One of the newcomers to the ACC challenges one of its cornerstone programs when No. 19 Pittsburgh hosts No. 18 Duke on Monday. The Panthers are off to a strong start in their first season in the conference and are tied for second place with Virginia, while Duke is right behind in fourth place in the now 15-team league. Pittsburgh is 12-0 at home and Duke is just 1-2 on the road.

The Blue Devils have won four consecutive games – allowing just 56.8 points during the stretch – and expect a fierce battle with the Panthers. “We’ve got to play a tough Pitt team at their place, which is going to be tough,” forward Rodney Hood said after Saturday’s trouncing of Florida State. “But if we keep playing like we’re playing, we’re going to be in a good position.” The Panthers have won eight of their last nine after defeating Maryland on Saturday.

            TV:
            7 p.m. ET, ESPN

            LINE:
The line and total are currently off the board.

            ABOUT DUKE (16-4, 12-8 ATS):
There are rumblings that forward Jabari Parker may not leave for the NBA after a season that is beginning to shape up as the best by a freshman in school history. Parker, who averages 18.7 points and eight rebounds, has six double-doubles to tie for the third-most by a Duke freshman, and he has scored in double digits in 19 of 20 games. He also is on pace to break Johnny Dawkins’ school freshman scoring mark of 18.1 per game and his rebounding average trails only Mike Gminski (10.7) and Gene Banks (8.6) and ranks ahead of players like Elton Brand (7.3) and Luol Deng (6.9).

            ABOUT PITTSBURGH (18-2, 7-9-1 ATS):
Senior guard Lamar Patterson has been sensational and leads the team in scoring (17.9), assists (4.7) and 3-point baskets (39) while shooting 51.3 percent from the field. Patterson scored 28 points against Maryland, falling two shy of his career high, and also had seven rebounds and seven assists. “It’s not like he was trying to do too much,” said guard Cameron Wright, the team’s third-leading scorer at 10.9. “He’s playing out of his mind right now. He was able to hold us together.”

            TRENDS:

            * Duke is 6-2 ATS in its last eight games following a SU win.
            * Pittsburgh is 8-2-1 ATS its last 11 games versus the ACC.
            * Under is 7-3 in Duke's last 10 games following an ATS win.
            * Over is 5-1 in Pittsburgh's last six overall.

            TIP-INS:

            1. The teams have split 12 meetings, but Pitt’s victory in the 2007-08 matchup marked the first time the teams had played one another since the 1979-80 campaign.

            2. Panthers C Talib Zanna (13.6 points, team-best 7.8 rebounds) is shooting 61.9 percent from the field.

            3. Hood (17.7) has eight 20-point outings and leads the ACC in 3-point shooting percentage (44.9).

Oklahoma State at Oklahoma: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma State Cowboys at Oklahoma Sooners (OFF)

Oklahoma State looks for its first win in Norman since 2004 on Monday when the 12th-ranked Cowboys face No. 25 Oklahoma, which has won four of its last five. The Cowboys bounced back from a two-point loss at Kansas with an 81-75 win over West Virginia on Saturday, despite leading scorer Marcus Smart fouling out after being held to a season-low four points. Smart, averaging 17.1 points and 5.7 rebounds, later apologized to his teammates via Twitter for his frustrating performance.

Five players are averaging double figures in points for Oklahoma, which shot 50 percent from the field for the first time in 13 games and defeated Texas Tech 74-65 on Saturday. Freshman point guard Jordan Woodard, who shot 22.2 percent from the field in his first six conference games, turned in a strong outing with 15 points and eight assists against the Red Raiders. Oklahoma has won 11 of the last 18 meetings with the Cowboys, including nine straight at home.

              TV:
              9 p.m. ET, ESPN

              LINE:
The line and total are currently off the board.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA STATE (16-3, 8-7 ATS):
With Smart a non-factor against West Virginia, 6-7 wing Le'Bryan Nash drew high praise after scoring a career-high 29 points and collecting nine rebounds. “He's a power forward in size, he can shoot the midrange, he can do a lot of things,” Mountaineers guard Juwan Staten told reporters. “When he gets it going and starts making shots, it's hard to stop.” Guard Markel Brown averages 16.5 points and 5.4 rebounds and became the ninth player in school history with 100 career blocks on Saturday.

              ABOUT OKLAHOMA (16-4, 9-8-1 ATS):
Guard Buddy Hield has led the Sooners in scoring in five of their seven Big 12 games, including a team-high 18 points against Texas Tech. Forward Ryan Spangler has 64 rebounds over his last five games, and he’ll need another strong performance against the formidable Oklahoma State frontcourt. Forward Cameron Clark averages a team-high 17 points and 5.8 rebounds for the Sooners, who rank third in the Big 12 in scoring at 83.8 points per game, just behind Oklahoma State (84.3).

              TRENDS:

              * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
              * Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
              * Oklahoma State is 1-5 ATS in the last six meetings.
              * Oklahoma State is 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings in Oklahoma.

              TIP-INS:

              1. Smart was held to 10 points on 3-of-10 shooting in the Cowboys’ 77-68 loss to the Sooners in Norman last season.

              2. Oklahoma’s last eight games have been decided by single digits.

              3. Oklahoma State’s losses have come by a combined 10 points to Kansas, Kansas State and Memphis.

Kings at Sharks: What bettors need to know
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at San Jose Sharks (-156, 5)

Pacific Division rivals heading in opposite directions meet on Monday night as the red-hot San Jose Sharks vie for their seventh straight victory when they host the Los Angeles Kings. The Sharks remained unbeaten on their four-game homestand with a 3-2 overtime triumph over Minnesota on Saturday. Home has also been a safe haven when Los Angeles pays a visit - as San Jose has won the last seven regular-season meetings.

While the Sharks are doing their best to keep pace with surging Anaheim, the Kings fell for the fifth straight outing with a 3-0 setback against the Ducks at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night. The loss to Anaheim was the second in three days for Los Angeles, which is trying to avoid its first six-game winless skid in over six years (Dec. 12-26, 2007). Anze Kopitar scored his team's last goal in the first period on Thursday, but was denied on a penalty-shot opportunity two nights later.

                LINE:
The line opened with the Sharks as -156 faves. The total is at 5.

                ABOUT THE KINGS (29-18-6):
Captain Dustin Brown's knee-on-knee hit against San Jose rookie Tomas Hertl was the primary talking point coming out of Los Angeles' 4-1 triumph on Dec. 19. Brown has admitted that his hit was not intended to injure the flashy Hertl, while the Sharks took issue with how Los Angeles handled the situation. Brown has collected only three goals and an assist since that outing - and has been held off the scoresheet in each of his last six games.

                ABOUT THE SHARKS (34-12-6):
Signed to a three-year contract extension on Friday, Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau paid immediate dividends the following night. The captain scored his second goal on Saturday at 3:30 of overtime to defeat the Wild and increase his career point total to 1,173 - putting him within six of Sergei Fedorov for a share of 47th place on the all-time list. Marleau also tallied as San Jose improved to 3-0-0 on its homestand.

                TRENDS:

                * Under is 3-0-2 in the last five meetings in San Jose.
                * Under is 5-1-2 in the last eight meetings.
                * Home team is 23-6 in the last 29 meetings.
                * Kings are 15-36 in the last 51 meetings in San Jose.

                OVERTIME:

                1. San Jose C Joe Pavelski is riding a five-game point streak (seven goals, three assists), but was held off the scoresheet in the first meeting versus the Kings.

                2. Quick has yielded just nine goals en route to losing his last four decisions (0-3-1).

                3. The Sharks have recorded five one-goal victories during their winning streak.

Bank Shots: NBA's weekly betting news and notes
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Jan. 20-26

Hottest ATS - Oklahoma City Thunder (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS)

It should worry opposing teams that the Thunder continue to be one of the most prolific teams in the league despite missing a top-10 player in point guard Russell Westbrook. Of course, having Kevin Durant on the roster doesn't hurt. He was at his bucket-filling best in the three games he played last week, pouring in 114 points in wins over Portland, San Antonio and Philadelphia. Oklahoma City didn't miss a beat when Durant missed a game due to a shoulder injury, easily handling the Boston Celtics as part of a seven-game winning streak.

Coldest ATS - Detroit Pistons (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS)

Things have gone south in the Motor City, as the Pistons find themselves a season-worst 10 games below .500. Detroit lost a pair of games it probably should have won - dropping a three-point decision to lowly Milwaukee and a two-point heartbreaker at home to New Orleans - while also getting beaten by the Los Angeles Clippers and Dallas Mavericks. The defense has been particularly galling, having surrendered nearly 109 points during the four-game skid. Upcoming games against Orlando, Atlanta and Philadelphia offer some hope of ending the slide.

Best Over play - Los Angeles Lakers (0-4 SU, 4-0 O/U)

It isn't exactly Showtime in Los Angeles these days, but Lakers games have been more high scoring than normal the past week. Los Angeles stretched its streak of consecutive Overs to eight. Unfortunately, the last four have resulted in losses, as the Lakers concluded its 2-5 "Grammy" road trip with losses in Chicago, Miami, Orlando and New York. While the offense was solid in all four games, averaging 102.5 points, the defense was another thing altogether, surrendering nearly 109 points to extend what has been a terrible stretch of point prevention since the start of 2014.

Best Under play - Cleveland Cavaliers (1-3 SU, 0-4 O/U)

Low-scoring affairs have suddenly become the norm in Cleveland, where the Cavaliers played to a perfect Under week thanks to an improved defense and a sputtering offense. Cleveland opened the week with a five-point home loss to the Dallas Mavericks, then followed that up with a 98-87 defeat at the hands of the stingy Chicago Bulls. The Cavaliers easily handled low-scoring Milwaukee Friday but squandered an early lead to Phoenix in what finished as a nine-point loss. Cleveland has now gone Under in 11 of its last 14 games.

                  Surveying the Schedule

The Brooklyn Nets have made a race of it in the Atlantic Division, winning 10 of their last 11 games to move to within a game and a half of the first-place Toronto Raptors. The Nets face their biggest week of the season, starting with a pivotal home game against the Raptors Monday night. Brooklyn will then enjoy a three-day break before tangling with the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder Friday night and closing out the week against the host Indiana Pacers Saturday.

Pucking the Trends: NHL's weekly betting news and notes
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Jan. 20-26

                        Hot team

                        San Jose Sharks (3-0 SU)

The Anaheim Ducks may be well in control of the Pacific Division, and the Western Conference, for that matter. But the rival Sharks have served notice that they won't go quietly. The Sharks won a trio of one-goal games this past week to extend their winning streak to six games and kept pace with the surging Ducks, who lead the division by nine points. Five of San Jose's six wins during the string have been by one goal - suggesting some luck may be involved - and the week ahead includes difficult home games against Los Angeles and Chicago.

                        Cold team

                        Montreal Canadiens (0-3 SU)

It's officially panic time in La Belle Province after the Canadiens had what was easily their worst week of the season. After opening with a 5-1 defeat in Pittsburgh and a 4-1 loss in Detroit to close out a 1-3-0 road swing, Montreal's losing streak reached four games with one of its worst efforts of the campaign - a 5-0 thumping at the hands of visiting Washington. How bad was it for the Canadiens? By the time netminder Carey Price was pulled after allowing the Capitals' fourth goal, the shots favored Washington 26-3.

                        Best Over play

                        Toronto Maple Leafs (4-0 O/U)

The Maple Leafs have not only provided fans with reason to believe in the team again, they've also given bettors the strongest Over play in the NHL the past two weeks. Toronto went a perfect 4-0 on the Over/Under last week, earning a 4-2 victory in Phoenix and a 5-2 triumph in Colorado before concluding its road trip with a 7-1 loss in Dallas and a 5-4 overtime defeat in Winnipeg. The offense is back in business after slumping mightily for a stretch earlier in the month. The defense and goaltending, however, have struggled for most of January.

                        Best Under play

                        Washington Capitals (0-3 O/U)

The Capitals were one of the few teams in the league not providing any value on the Over and it's a good-news/bad-news proposition for the club. Washington surrendered just four goals in three games this week but still lost two of them, managing just one goal in back-to-back losses to the Ottawa Senators and New Jersey Devils. The Capitals finally ended their scoring slump - and a season-worst seven-game losing streak - with that win over the Canadiens. Games in Buffalo, Columbus and Detroit could help keep the offensive surge going.

                        Surveying the schedule

The Tampa Bay Lightning have astounded even the most optimistic observer, rolling along despite being without top goal threat Steven Stamkos. The Lightning find themselves in a battle for top spot in the Eastern Conference, but will face a major test with a a four-game road trip coming up. Tampa Bay kicks things off in Toronto Tuesday before squaring off against Ottawa Thursday and wrapping up its three-city Canadian tour in Montreal Saturday night.

Raptors at Nets: What bettors need to know
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Raptors at Brooklyn Nets (OFF)

The Toronto Raptors will be without their leading scorer in what is easily the team's biggest game of the season to date. DeMar DeRozan did not travel with the team for Monday's game against the host Brooklyn Nets after suffering a sprained left foot in Saturday's 126-118 home defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Clippers. The good news for Toronto: they may have a suitable scoring replacement after Terrence Ross exploded for a club record-tying 51 points in defeat.

Ross' sensational game overshadowed DeRozan's injury and a forgettable performance by the normally reliable Toronto defense, which allowed the Clippers to shoot 54.8 percent from the field. A better defensive effort will be needed against the Nets, who earned an emotional 85-76 victory in Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett's return to Boston. Brooklyn has won five straight and 10 of 11 to move to within a game and a half of Toronto atop the Atlantic Division.

7:30 p.m. ET, TSN (Toronto), YES (Brooklyn)

                            LINE:
The line and total are currently off the board.

                            POWER RANKINGS:
                            Toronto (-7.5) - Brooklyn (-6.5) + home court (-3) = Brooklyn -2

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (22-21, 25-18 ATS):
The absence of the normally durable DeRozan will force the Raptors to rely more heavily on their secondary scoring options - and they have some good ones. Point guard Kyle Lowry has been one of the best at his position over the past two months - averaging 18.3 points in December and 16.7 so far in January - while Ross has shown flashes of his immense potential and center Jonas Valanciunas remains a reliable option in the middle. Valanciunas also leads the team with 14 double-doubles.

ABOUT THE NETS (20-22, 21-21 ATS):
Moving past Sunday's emotionally-charged victory in Boston shouldn't be hard for a veteran Brooklyn team that was expected to run away with the division title but got off to a dreadful start to the season. But with point guard Deron Williams finally healthy and the various role players contributing at both ends of the court, the Nets have been the league's hottest team since the flip of the calendar. But things are about to get a lot tougher, with games against Oklahoma City and Indiana coming up later this week.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Home team is 6-1-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.
                            * Raptors are 3-1-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
                            * Under is 19-8 in the last 27 meetings in Brooklyn.
                            * Underdog is 3-1-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

                            BUZZER BEATERS:

                            1. The teams have split a pair of meetings this season, both in Toronto.

                            2. Ross had 14 points in his last game against Brooklyn, a 96-80 Raptors vistory.

                            3. The Nets are just 2-6 in the second game of back-to-backs.
