    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Portland 114, BYU 110, 3OT-- One of the ten most interesting games I have ever seen; really. Both teams hit a tying 3-pointer in last 0:15 of an OT, with both teams declining to foul. Haws scored 48 for BYU; Sharp had 27 points in 35:00 for Portland, and he didn't start.

-- Washington 80, Oregon 76-- Ducks have now lost five games in a row.

-- Arizona State 79, Utah 75-- ASU's subs were 5-7 from the arc. Carson had 23, as he single-handedly tries to carry Sun Devils into NCAAs.

-- Chattanooga 84, Elon 63-- Moccasins are 7-0 in SoCon under first-year coach Wade, a former VCU assistant.

-- St John's/Penn State both got first conference win; both are possible to be the next landing spot for Bruce Pearl.

-- Irvine 72, Northridge 66-- Anteaters have never been in NCAAs, but are 4-0 in Big West and the early favorites to win that league.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here......

    13) There is an NHL game at Dodger Stadium Saturday night; high in LA Saturday is expected to be 77, low around 52. Not sure how it all works, but the game starts after dark- is there a maximum temp the game can be played at, before it is postponed?

    12) There are also NHL games in the baseball park in the Bronx over the next week, where warm temps will be no issue whatsoever. Outdoor NHL games have become very popular.

    11) Marlins’ president David Samson (former stepson of owner Jeffrey Loria) apparently took July-August off last summer to appear on the CBS reality series Survivor, which was filmed in the Phillipines and starts airing late next month.

Not often the president of a big league ballclub takes July-August off, seeing as the trading deadline is July 31, but the Marlins aren’t your normal organization, and they’re probably better off without Samson anyway. I’m sure the taxpayers of south Florida are thrilled they paid for a new ballpark for a team run by this guy and his weasel stepfather.

    10) Read this week where the Bronx baseball team took in $60M less in ticket revenues in 2013 than it did the year before, which is a big part of why they abandoned hopes of staying under the $189M luxury tax limit to sign Tanaka. If he makes them a contender, they’ll easily make up his $22M salary in ticket sales and improved TV ratings for the YES Network.

    9) Peyton Manning is the only player in this year’s Super Bowl who has already won a Super Bowl ring. Seahawks are the first Super Bowl team since 1990 with no players who have even played in a Super Bowl.

    8) Former Titans’ coach Mike Munchak signed on as OL coach for the Steelers, good get for Mike Tomlin’s staff.

    7) Golfer Steven Webster started the Qatar Open (European Tour) with a double-eagle on the 10th hole Wednesday, his first hole of the tournament. Don’t often see an albatross anytime, much less on the first hole of a tournament.

    6) Kevin Durant is averaging 35.6 ppg, 5.6 apg since Russell Westbrook got hurt; he was averaging 28.1/4.8 before Westbrook’s injury.

    5) Oakland Raiders are being sued by their own cheerleaders, which could be a first; ladies are suing for a variety of offenses. Not the best sign for an organization when stuff like this happens.

"The lawsuit filed Wednesday in Alameda County Superior Court alleges that the organization withholds all pay from the Raiderettes until the end of the season, does not pay for all hours worked and forces the cheerleaders to pay many of their own business expenses."......from ESPN.com

    4) 71-year old Mike Pope, who was tight end coach for the Giants’ for a very long time, has re-surfaced in Dallas. Giants went out of their way to say that OC Kevin Gilbride wasn’t fired, but then it came out last week that if he didn’t “retire” he was going to get the boot. Semantics; guys like that do not quit, unless they leave for a better job. Gilbride is 62, way too young to retire from a job that lucrative. Hell, Pope is 71 and he still wants to coach.

    3) We’re almost to the point in the basketball season where we can start speculating on where Bruce Pearl will resurface as a head coach next season; his show cause order from the NCAA ends after this season, so he’ll get hired by someone. St John’s? Auburn? Washington State? Pearl is an excellent coach whose NCAA violations seem miniscule, given stuff that’s gone on since then.

    2) When the Browns fired Rob Chudzinski after his first year as head coach, I figured they had someone in mind who they would quickly scoop up; why else can a guy after only one season on the job? 26 days later, they finally named a coach, guy who was a high school coach 13 years ago.

Now Art Briles/Gus Malzahn were also high school coaches and so was Mike Holmgren at one time, but the Browns look very foolish right now.

    1) Back in 1979, Tigers had a first-year manager named Les Moss who had been a pitching coach; he was 27-26 when Detroit fired him, for no other reason than Sparky Anderson became available and Anderson was a great manager, so they scooped him up and sent Moss packing.

Felt bad for Moss, who never got another chance to run a team, but at least those Tigers had a plan to become better, and they did, winning the World Series five years later. The Browns? They hired a former high school coach and really appear to be clutching at straws.

Betting tale of the tape: College Football Senior Bowl

The 65th edition of the college football's Senior Bowl goes Saturday afternoon in Mobile, Ala., showcasing the nation's top senior collegiate players and NFL prospects ahead of the spring draft.

The end-of-season showcase has seen its share of future NFL star power, with the list of MVPs including Dan Marino (Pittsburgh), Thurman Thomas (Oklahoma State), LaDainian Tomlinson (TCU) and E.J. Manuel (Florida State). This year's rosters are no different, with several players on both sides expected to go early in the draft.

Here's the breakdown in our betting tale of the tape:

      Offense

The North is led by standout Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd, who isn't among the list of higher-profile pass-throwers entering the NFL draft but could make a major name for himself here. A short-list candidate for the Walter Camp Award, Boyd threw for 3,851 yards with 34 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for the Tigers this season. West Virginia running back Charles Sims is the most skilled offensive player on the roster other than Boyd, racking up 1,095 yards on the ground and 14 total touchdowns - nine of those coming in the Mountaineers' final four games.

Boyd isn't the only draft-eligible QB looking to make a splash in Alabama. Fresno State's Derek Carr will have the attention of scouts from across the NFL as he looks to cap an incredible season that saw him lead the NCAA in passing yards (5,082) and touchdowns (50) while finishing with just eight interceptions on the way to an impressive 11-win season. Vanderbilt wide receiver Jordan Matthews is the other offensive weapon to watch after erupting for 1,477 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in what was an otherwise mediocre Commodores offense.

      Edge: South

      Defense

The North boasts an explosive defensive duo in defensive tackle Ra'Shede Hageman and safety Jimmie Ward. Hageman, at 6-foot-6 and north of 310 pounds, was a standout for the Minnesota Golden Gophers this past season and is listed as a projected first-round pick in the majority of early mock drafts. Northern Illinois' Ward is on the opposite end of the size spectrum - standing just 5-foot-11 - but was one of the top defensive backs in the nation with 77 tackles - 50 solo - and six interceptions, one returned for a touchdown.

The South lacks the defensive difference-makers of the opposition, but still has players who will impress scouts. Washington State strong safety Deone Bucannon has one of the widest wingspans of any defensive back in the game, and hits like a freight train. The Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist led the Pac-12 in tackles (109) while tying for fourth with five interceptions and adding three forced fumbles. Versatile linebacker Christian Jones should also make an impact after racking up 56 tackles for Florida State, including seven in the national title game.

      Edge: North

      Special Teams

The North boasts Rice placekicker Chris Boswell, who struggled this season after posting an 80 percent success rate over his previous two seasons combined. Boswell connected on just 14-of-21 attempts for the Owls in 2013, including just 8-of-15 attempts from 40 yards and beyond. Iowa State senior Kirby Van Der Kamp led a Cyclones special teams attack that finished sixth in the nation in punting yards, 50th in average and 46th in net yardage.

Auburn placekicker Cody Parkey continued his solid collegiate career with a respectable 2013 campaign for the national finalists. Parkey hit 15-of-21 field goal attempts, but that ledger includes a pair of misses from less than 39 yards and a 1-of-4 success rate from 50 yards and longer. Punting duties will be handled by Alabama's Cody Mandell, whose booming leg helped the Tide average the third-highest yardage in the NCAA (46.9) and the highest net (42.4).

      Edge: South

      Notable Quotable

"Obviously, I think I can throw. I want to go out there an answer every question possible. There's nothing I feel I can't do. I have nothing to prove to myself, but some people may question the system or how I understand certain things. I want to show that I can go out here and do whatever they need me to do." - Boyd

                        NCAAB

                        Friday, January 24

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                        Four NCAAB mid-major moneymakers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mid-major money. Small conference cash. Every season in college basketball there are small schools that provide value ATS that are overlooked to bettors. Whether it be a lack of television coverage, or playing in a small conference with a lack of marquee names, these teams might not be thought of as quality bets despite churning cover after cover.

Today we look at four schools that have been killing it ATS this season and are worth a look for those interested in diversifying what conferences they bet on.

Wichita State (Missouri Valley Conference, 12-3-1 ATS)

Wichita State is actually one of the most consistent mid-majors in terms of success at the NCAA tournament and are currently an undefeated 19-0. The Shockers are also a very impressive 12-3-1 ATS. Led by Cleanthony Early (15.5 PPG) and a balanced group of returning players, the Shockers could very well finish the regular season undefeated. If spreads get inflated and teams start getting more and more motivated to end their undefeated streak we could see more ATS losses which is a concern. For now, the Shockers are the giants of the mid-majors on the court and against the spread.

New Mexico State (WAC, 7-2 ATS)

New Mexico State, most known for having 7'5" center Sim Bhullar and Johannesburg-born Tshilidzi Nephawe down low, have no problems using their size to dominate opponents in the WAC. With their only ATS loss in their last ten meetings being against the Arizona Wildcats, it is no secret that the Aggies' size creates value when they are facing smaller opponents. With Nephawe averaging 7.4 rebounds and Bhullar averaging 3.4 blocks per game, the Aggies are simply dominant in the post most nights. Add in Daniel Mullings 16.2 PPG and the Aggies have more than enough on the perimeter to support the interior defense and rebounding of their Twin Towers.

Air Force (Mountain West, 9-3 ATS)

Air Force has been a top underdog in the Mountain West in the opening month of conference play, covering four-straight spreads of 7.5 or more recently. Air Force has also covered while favored, covering as 9-point favorites against San Jose State. While the team is a pretty average 9-8 SU and is fairly pedestrian when it comes to statistics, they appear to stay in games and have three players averaging points in the double digits including scoring leader Tre Coggins who is averaging a steady 17.5 PPG. That "Big Three" is keeping them in games, and while handicappers keep them as underdogs there is value.

                        UTEP (C-USA, 10-3 ATS)

A betting scandal hasn't slowed down the Miners from being solid both in the C-USA and ATS. After stumbling in a loss to Charlotte and failing to cover against Western Illinois in the fallout of the scandal, UTEP has won and covered four of the last five. Holding teams to a 37.8 percent from the field and 28.7 percent shooting behind the arc, the Miners' defense has kept them in the C-USA race and as the best ATS team in the conference.
