Pucking the Trends: NHL's weekly betting news and notes
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Jan. 12-18

    Hot team

    Columbus Blue Jackets (3-0 SU)

Welcome back, Sergei Bobrovsky. The defending Vezina Trophy winner's return to the lineup has helped fuel the Blue Jackets' season-high six-game winning streak, which includes victories over the Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals and an overtime thriller over the Buffalo Sabres last week. Bobrovsky, who struggled with his form earlier in the season, is 5-0-0 since coming back from a groin injury and has Columbus in position to challenge for a playoff berth in the jam-packed Eastern Conference race.

    Cold team

    Washington Capitals (0-4 SU)

One of the streakiest teams in the NHL is at it again, taking itself out of the race for top spot in the Metropolitan Division with losses in eight of its last 10 games. The once-vaunted offense has gone completely silent, with the Capitals managing just six total goals in its four losses last week. And while it managed to pick up single points in shootout defeats against Buffalo and San Jose, the club is ice-cold heading into a rough stretch that will see it play six of its next seven games away from Washington.

    Best Over play

    Philadelphia Flyers (3-0-1 O/U)

The combination of a strong, balanced offense and some shoddy goaltending has contributed to the Flyers being one of the league's strongest "over" plays last week. Philadelphia earned a push in a 4-1 loss to the New York Rangers before edging the Buffalo Sabres 4-3, dropping a 4-3 shootout decision to the Nashville Predators and fending off the New York Islanders 6-4. Goaltender Steve Mason is going through a rough stretch - and suffered a minor indignity by being pulled in the win over the Islanders, just hours after signing a three-year contract extension.

    Best Under play

    New York Rangers (0-3-1 O/U)

The Rangers went in the opposite direction following the victory over Philadelphia, tightening up what has been a much-maligned defense for most of the season. New York dropped a 2-1 decision to the Tampa Bay Lightning before bouncing back nicely with victories over the Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators. Netminder Henrik Lundqvist is starting to look like one of the world's top players again, allowing just three goals over his last three appearances; backup Cam Talbot has also been solid, allowing two goals in his previous two starts.

    Surveying the schedule

The Toronto Maple Leafs undid much of the damage caused by a four-game losing skid earlier in the month, following it up with an impressive four-game winning streak that included a measure of revenge over the defending Eastern Conference-champion Boston Bruins. But the Maple Leafs' ability to sustain that momentum will be put to the test this week as they hit the road for a pivotal four-game trek. Games in Phoenix, Colorado, Dallas and Winnipeg could go a long way in determining whether Toronto is a contender for a top-four seed in the East.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best NHL spot bet opportunities

              Letdown spot

The Toronto Maple Leafs will head into Monday's trip-opening stop in Phoenix fresh off a big win over the rival Canadiens on home ice on Saturday. That marked the Leafs fourth straight victory, but three of those came at home, and two by way of a shootout.

The Coyotes are a force at home, where they're 14-7-3 on the season. Phoenix has righted the ship following an ugly stretch, notching back-to-back wins over the Canucks and Devils. Staying home works in the 'Yotes favor against a 'fat and happy' Leafs squad on Monday.

              Lookahead spot

The L.A. Kings have been playing a rather uneven brand of hockey lately, and they'll find themselves in a difficult spot on Tuesday, as they head to Columbus for a non-conference date with the red hot Blue Jackets.

The spot is made even tougher thanks to the game that the Kings have on deck two nights later. That's when they'll head back out west for a matchup against an even hotter opponent, and a rival at that, in the Anaheim Ducks. Don't count on a Tuesday night game in Columbus drawing the Kings full attention.

              Schedule spot

It's going to be a tough week for the Ottawa Senators, as they pack their bags and hit the road for three games in four nights. After falling in blowout fashion against the Rangers on Saturday, the Sens will make the trip to Washington for a game against the Capitals on Tuesday night.

After enjoying a day off, they'll be back at it in Tampa on Thursday before facing the Hurricanes in Carolina on Friday. We could see a drained Sens squad taking the ice by the time Friday rolls around, and the Canes are never an easy out at home, where they're 11-9-5 this season.

                        Letdown spot

Denver was in terrible form for the entire month of December. The Nuggets went 5-10 SU and ATS during the month. The first two weeks of January were strong, going 6-2 SU and 5-3 ATS, but the Nuggets have lost back-to-back games coming into Thursday’s game in Portland.

The Nuggets will have three full days of rest going into that game, and then they have Friday off before hosting Indiana Saturday night. That’s two Class-A teams in back-to-back games. On Sunday, the Nuggets will play at Sacramento, so Denver may not be too sharp after playing the Blazers and Pacers in their previous two contests.

                        Lookahead spot

Indiana began a five-game West Coast road trip at Golden State Monday night. The Pacers will play in Phoenix Wednesday, in Sacramento Friday, and then at Denver Saturday. In that sequence, Indiana will face just one bad team, and that’s the Kings.

Indiana just beat Sacramento 116-92 at home on January 14. That game was never close, as the Pacers led by as many as 29 points. After facing the Warriors and Suns, Indiana will play the Kings on the first night of a back-to-back set before playing in the thin air and altitude of Denver. The Pacers will be looking ahead to the Nuggets, especially since they just crushed the Kings by 24 points in their previous meeting.

                        Schedule spot

The Utah Jazz have had a miserable season, but they will be in a terrific scheduling spot Saturday, January 25. Utah is hosting the Washington Wizards that night, and the setup couldn’t be any better for the Jazz.

Utah will be coming into that game with a full three days of rest. It will also be just its second game in seven days after hosting Minnesota Tuesday night. Meanwhile, the Wizards will be playing in the thin air and altitude of Utah after playing in Phoenix the night before. It will also be the third game in four nights for Washington, and their fourth game of the week.

                            Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Top six college hoop conferences, according to kenpom.com

                            6) AAC-- Bottom four in league are dragging it down.

                            5) Pac 12-- Colorado's season is ruined by Dinwiddie's injury.

                            4) ACC-- Can North Carolina win enough to make the NIT?

                            3) Big East-- Butler's first four league home games all went to OT.

                            2) Big X-- Baylor was 12-1 out of conference; they're 1-4 in Big X.

                            1) Big Dozen-- Ohio State currently on a four-game skid.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Random stuff on a winter day.....

                            13) NFL is considering eliminating the extra point, since only five out of roughly 1,200 kicks were missed this year. One suggested proposal involves a touchdown being worth seven points instead of six, with the potential for an extra play from scrimmage that would yield an eighth point, but if you did not get the 8th point, you would also lose a point, falling back to six. .

                            12) When Lions' QB Matthew Stafford was in high school, the center on his football team was Clayton Kershaw, the $215M man with the Dodgers.

                            11) Favorites are 26-19-2 vs spread in the history of the Super Bowl, but just 1-5 the last six years.

                            10) Vancouver Canucks' Henrik Sedin is sitting out tonight's game with Edmonton, ending his iron man streak at 679 consecutive games.

                            9) Canucks' coach John Tortorella got 15 days (six games) without pay for his role in locker room fracas in Vancouver the other night- with a 17-day Olympic break starting February 9, Tortorella isn't going to be around his team very much between now and the beginning of March.

                            8) Nebraska 68, Ohio State 62-- Tim Miles is a good coach who built the program at North Dakota State and made Colorado State relevant- this was his first league win this season. Nebraska is sinking a lot of resources into its basketball program; Miles will make them a winner.

                            7) $98.9M bet in Nevada's sports books on last year's Super Bowl was a new record, first time in seven years their handle exceeded the year before.

                            6) Charlotte's Al Jefferson had 22 points, 19 rebounds Monday; in the first quarter, he had 10 points, 10 boards, making him the first player this year to get a double double in the first quarter of a game.

                            5) Speaking of the Bobcats, their 18-25 record would put them in the NBA playoffs, if those playoffs started today. Thats not good.

Meanwhile out west, Memphis/Denver are both 20-20, but would miss the playoffs if they started today. Oy.

                            4) Toronto Raptors' GM Masai Ujiri must love the Knicks; he used to be the Nuggets' GM; he was the guy who traded Carmelo Anthony and he also foisted Andrea Bargnani on New York. Guy is making a career out of taking the Knicks to the cleaners.

                            3) 24 overs, 23 unders in the first 47 Super Bowls, if you invest in totals.

                            2) Creighton 96, Villanova 68-- Bluejays lost at Providence Saturday, then made 21-35 treys in Philly last night, crushing the #4 Wildcats. Teams in this era are so erratic; Creighton was 4-19 on arc Saturday in Providence.

                            1) Super Bowl VI was held outdoors in New Orleans, at Tulane Stadium; it was 39 degrees at kickoff, making it the coldest Super Bowl ever, until this Sunday night. Colder the night, the better for Seattle, right?
