Canucks at Kings: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at Los Angeles Kings (-153, 5)

The Los Angeles Kings wrap up their homestand Monday as they host the Vancouver Canucks - the team against which they began the five-game stretch. Los Angeles kicked off the homestand with a 3-1 triumph over Vancouver on Jan. 4 but enters the finale with a 2-1-1 mark. Defenseman Drew Doughty got the Kings off to a good start Saturday with a power-play goal, but that was all the offense the team was able to muster as it dropped a 3-1 decision to Detroit.

Vancouver is beginning a three-game road trip that also will take it to Anaheim and Phoenix. The Canucks ended their five-game winless streak Friday, when Mike Santorelli scored less than six minutes into the third period to snap a tie and lift the club to a 2-1 home victory over St. Louis. The Kings won each of the first three meetings between the Pacific Division rivals, outscoring the Canucks 11-4.

        TV:
10:30 p.m. ET, RSN Pacific (Vancouver), FSN West (Los Angeles)

        LINE:
The Kings opened at -150 and now sit at -153. The total is 5.

        ABOUT THE CANUCKS (24-13-9):
Vancouver could have two key members back in the lineup against Los Angeles as defenseman Alex Edler and goaltender Roberto Luongo took part in practice on Sunday. "I had a good practice (Sunday) and we'll see (on Monday)," Edler said. "Mentally, I'm ready." Edler has been sidelined since suffering a knee injury on Dec. 3, while Luongo hasn't played since being run over by Kings captain Dustin Brown in the loss on Jan. 4.

        ABOUT THE KINGS (27-14-5):
Los Angeles is just 2-6-1 in its last nine games, and the struggles can be attributed to a lack of offense. The Kings have been held to two goals or fewer seven times during the stretch and have scored more than three just once. Mike Richards is mired in a 21-game goal-scoring drought and has tallied only once in his last 29 contests - on Nov. 25 at Vancouver.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 6-1-3 in the last 10 meetings in Los Angeles.
        * Under is 10-4-5 in the last 19 meetings.
        * Canucks are 2-5 in the last seven meetings in Los Angeles.
        * Canucks are 3-8 in the last 11 meetings.

        OVERTIME:

        1. Los Angeles has not defeated Vancouver four times in a campaign since 1990-91, when it went 5-3-0 in the season series.

        2. Canucks C Zac Dalpe is expected to remain on a line with captain Henrik and Daniel Sedin on Monday after scoring a goal in his first game alongside the twins.

        3. The Kings take to the road for five straight games beginning Thursday in St. Louis and play seven of their next eight away from home.

NFL betting: AFC title game line moves from -6 to -4.5

The line for the AFC Championship between the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos may have opened a little too much in the home side Broncos' favor.

The Broncos opened at -6 at most books following the conclusion of yesterday's Divisional games, but have already been bet to -4.5.

According to Michael Stewart, an oddsmaker with CarbonSports.ag, early sharp money is the engine behind this early move, dropping Denver from -6 to -5 at their sportsbooks. Stewart says it’s been all action on New England, both spread and moneyline, with 82 percent and 88 percent of the action respectively on the road team.

Sharp play, combined with the way the Patriots are playing led to the line move at Sportsbook.ag, said oddsmaker Mike Perry.

"The reason for line move is that both sharp players and a heavy majority of our players were more impressed with what they saw from the Patriots than the Broncos this past week," Perry told Covers. "Both of these betting contingents likes the Pats, so that’s why the line moved as it did."

Return to run sparks Under wins in NFC Playoffs

The NFL may be a passing league now but when it comes to paving the road to the Super Bowl, teams are looking to ground and pound postseason opponents.

This trend is especially prominent in the NFC, where teams have controlled the ball and the clock with their rushing attack, keeping final scores Under the total. All four NFC playoff games have finished below the number, and each of those contests has featured the winner taking to the turf to secure the victory.

New Orleans shocked Philadelphia with a run-focused attack in the Wild Card Round, picking up 185 yards on the ground and San Francisco rushed for 167 yards in its win over Green Bay. The Niners followed that with 126 yards rushing in the win over Carolina Sunday while Seattle marched for 167 yards in its win over the Saints. Those winning teams scored a total of just three passing touchdowns in those playoff victories, compared to a combined five scores on the ground.

And this change in offensive pace isn’t reserved to the NFC, with the AFC also seeing many potent pass attacks turn to the ground game.

New England dominated Indianapolis with 234 yards rushing, but also ran into the end zone six times while Tom Brady passed for a pedestrian 13 of 25 for 198 yards. The Patriots won 43-22 and blew the 51-point total away.

The Denver Broncos also switched gears with the run game leading the charge in Sunday’s victory over San Diego. The Broncos rumbled for 133 yards behind RBs Knowshon Moreno and Montee Ball. That kept scoring low, with Denver hanging on for a 24-17 win that stayed below the 55-point number.

Unders in the postseason are nothing new to football bettors. Last year’s Wild Card Weekend provided a 0-4 Over/Under record. However, the Divisional Round returned serve with a 4-0 O/U count. The Championship Round produced a 1-1 O/U mark and Super Bowl XLVII played well over the 47.5-point total, with Baltimore beating San Francisco 34-31.

Oddsmakers have set the total for the AFC Championship between New England and Denver at 54.5 while the NFC Championship total is posted at 39.5 points.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best NHL spot bet opportunities

                  Letdown spot

The Edmonton Oilers pulled off a shocking win over the Pittsburgh Penguins Friday night and then packed their bags for a trip to Chicago to face the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks two nights later.

This isn't a classic letdown spot, as the Oilers will have had a full day off to regroup, but I'm thinking we'll see a less-than-inspired effort from the young Oilers as they head to Dallas to counter the Stars Tuesday night. Road wins haven't come easy for the Oilers and I suspect they'll be in tough against a sneaky-good opponent in this spot.

                  Lookeahead spot

Calgary is reeling right now and things won't get any easier Monday night as the Flames face the surging Hurricanes in Carolina. A better opportunity for Calgary to snap its losing streak awaits Tuesday, when it makes a stop in Nashville to take on the struggling Predators.

A trip to Carolina doesn't serve as a strong motivational spot for Western Conference squads at the best of times. While the Flames should be getting up for every game out of sheer desperation, they might just be a no-show in this non-conference tilt Monday.

                  Schedule spot

This isn't going to be an easy week for the New Jersey Devils. After defeating the Panthers in Florida Saturday, they traveled to Toronto to face the Leafs in a quick turnaround Sunday. After that it's on to Montreal for a date with the Habs Tuesday.

That's where things get dicey. New Jersey will make the long trek to Colorado on only one day of rest (if you can call it that) before wrapping up their whirlwind road trip with a stop in Phoenix Saturday. Don't count on a peak performance from the Devils in the desert. For its part, Phoenix will have been home since Wednesday, before it opens a three-game homestand against Vancouver one night later.
