    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

According to Bovada, the six most popular Super Bowl matchups, with odds they occur:

9-4-- Broncos-Seahawks—Seattle’s first-ever playoff game was a win over Denver.

11-2-- Broncos-49ers—Jim Harbaugh vs Peyton Manning, like a Colts’ alumni game.

13-2-- Patriots-Seahawks— Pete Carroll was the Pats’ coach before Belichick.

8-1-- Broncos-Panthers—Would be the John Fox Bowl.

    12-1-- Broncos-Saints-- Isn’t Denver’s quarterback from New Orleans?

12-1-- Patriots-49ers— Seriously hoping this one doesn’t happen. My two most disliked NFL teams.

    *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but......

    13) Yahoo! Sports’ Pat Forde pointed out Monday that new Texas football coach Charlie Strong has always shunned the non-football parts of coaching, which often take up a lot of time at a bigtime college program.

Forde says if Strong doesn’t adjust those ways at Texas, which has its own TV network, his stay in Austin might not be a happy one. Coaches have a lot of off-field responsibility at a place like Texas, which is why the coach makes $5M a year. No one doubts that Strong can/will win with Longhorns, but part of his job is to help keep his rabid fanbase informed, and that ain’t always been something he has embraced at Louisville.

    12) If you like watching coaches flip out, check out highlights of Iowa-Wisconsin Sunday night, when Hawkeye coach Fran McCaffery loses his mind in Madison and gets tossed, while his team has a lead, which it then lost, never to regain. This isn’t the first anger management episode for McCaffery, who voiced a displeasure for overly physical play whole coaching here in Albany for Siena.

If you don’t like physical play, why in the name of Rick Mahorn would you go coach in the Big Dozen, where Michigan State occasionally practices in shoulder pads?

Hawkeyes have a nice team; they need their coach to have more poise.

    11) Marshawn Lynch gets fined $50,000 for not talking to the press; someone buy this guy a copy of Bull Durham, so he can watch the scene where Kevin Costner instructs Tim Robbins on the art of the using boring clichés in interviews. Why spent thousands of dollars when you don’t have to? You think Belichick likes talking to the press? No, so he bores them to death with cliches, and saves his money.

    10) Sometimes life is simple: I’m looking at hotels for a future vacation- one place has an actual landing pad for helicopters. I correctly decide that this place is too expensive for me. On to the next choice.

    9) Legitimate question: I’d love to know if Brad Stevens is enjoying himself coaching the Celtics. Not the wins/losses, we can see those in the paper, but the mechanics of the job, compared to coaching Butler, which looks to be in very deep water (at least this year) in the new Big East.

    8) Knicks are 8-2 when Carmelo Anthony has 4+ assists in a game, 3-17 when he does not. Not only does he have to move the ball, the person he moves it to has to make the shot. Iman Shumpert had an excellent Texas swing last week; can he keep it up?

    7) Dolphins’ coach Joe Philbin fired offensive coordinator Mike Sherman Monday, which had to be a sad day, since Sherman was Philbin's English teacher in high school. Am guessing that decision came from up above.

    6) Lot of underclassmen WRs declared for the draft this weekend; the Combine will be very interesting the day they all work out. Draft is going to be very deep at that position.

    5) Excellent decision by UCLA’s Brett Hundley to come back to school for his junior year; QB’s need to stay in school and play as many games as possible, so they’re game-ready when they get to the pros. Bill Parcells didn’t like drafting QBs who had played less than three years in college.

    4) There is a TV show called “Bad Ink” about a business that fixes bad tattoos. Will check it out and report back; it has to be better than lot of those other fabricated “reality” shows, which aren’t very real at all.

    3) Auburn coach Gus Malzahn cashed in $575K in bonuses this year, in his first year at Auburn. Malzahn used to be a high school coach; he must think he hit the freakin’ lottery, but he would have added another $625K last night if Auburn had hung on for the win in what was a great game.

    2) If you like to read good writing, really good writing, check out Joe Posnanski, either on Twitter or on his blog. He might be the best sportswriter in America right now.

    1) Now that the games are over in college football until August, the real competition starts for the next four weeks; recruiting season. Games in 2018 and 2019 will be decided by where high school kids decide to go to college over the next four weeks. It is highly competitive stuff; a book called Meat Market is the best book I’ve ever read about recruiting. If you like college football, its well worth your time.

NFL Divisional Weekend trends: Bye might not mean Super Bowl

Once again, after expanding its playoff format to 12 teams in 1990, the NFL left the door wide open to the possibilities of a Wild Card team running the table and hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

Since the Wild Card system began in 1970, only 10 wild card teams have advanced all the way to the Super Bowl. Of those, only six won the Super Bowl. And of those 10 wild card teams, only four teams managed to win three games on the road to make it to the Super Bowl - the last three of whom captured the crown.

In fact, five of the last seven Super Bowl champions have played in the first round of the playoffs, including the Baltimore Ravens last season.

Will the trend continue this season or will the top seeded teams have their say? And speaking of top ranked teams, the No. 1 seed from the NFC has not won a Super Bowl since 1999.

It’s important to remember that 39 of the last 47 Super Bowl winners have owned a Top 10 ranked defense. (Are you listening Carolina, New Orleans, San Francisco and Seattle?)

Remember, it’s not always the best team that wins in the NFL playoffs… it’s the hottest.

Before we crown anyone just yet, let’s first check a few Divisional Round angles in the NFL playoffs that are noteworthy. All results are since 1990 and are ATS (Against The Spread), unless noted otherwise.

Bye And Large Top Seeds Up To Speed

No. 1 seeds enjoy the luxury of not only hosting a game in this round but also play with an added week of rest.

For the most part these teams have met with modicum of success, going 67-25 SU and 48-42-2 ATS in this role.

The best the NFC has to offer has gone 37-9 SU and 28-17-1 ATS, including 22-8-1 ATS as favorites of 6 or more points. The NFC spotlight shines on top-seeded Seattle this Saturday.

While not up to par with the NFC, top seeds from the AFC have gone 30-16 SU and 20-25-1 ATS, including 7-2 SU and ATS when facing a foe off a Wild Card round spread win of more than 17 points. No. 1 seed Denver will look to improve on those numbers when they host division rival San Diego on Sunday.

      Success Breeds Success

Speaking of the added benefit of an extra week to prepare this time of the year, rested hosts in this round that enjoyed success last season use that experience to their advantage.

That’s confirmed by the fact that teams that won 11 or more games last year are 32-6 SU and 24-13-1-1 ATS at home with a week to prepare in Divisional Round contests.

Denver, New England and Seattle all fit the bill this season, rather cautiously though as teams in this role are just 8-4 SU and 4-8 ATS the last seven years.

On the flip side, teams that were losing teams last years (seven or fewer wins) are just 4-24 SU and 11-16-1 ATS in this round, including 1-13 SU and 3-11 ATS when playing off an upset, underdog win.

New Orleans and San Diego look to oblige this week.

      Clint Eastwood Says

Here’s a brief capsule of this year’s Divisional Round combatants along with some relevant Good, Bad and Ugly trends…

New Orleans at Seattle (-8, 47.5)
Good: Seahawks 15-1 SU and 12-4 ATS home behind QB Russell Wilson
Bad: Saints 1-5 SU and ATS away all-time in the playoffs
Ugly: Seahawks 0-3 SU and ATS vs. Saints when New Orleans off SU and ATS win

Indianapolis at New England (-7.5, 53)
Good: Colts QB Andrew Luck 6-1 SU and ATS as a dog vs. greater than .667 opp
Bad: Visiting team 5-13 ATS in Colts postseason games
Ugly: Pats QB Tom Brady 0-6 ATS playoffs w/rest vs. opp off back-to-back wins

San Francisco at Carolina (+2, 42)
Good: Niners QB Colin Kaepernick 7-1 SU and 7-0-1 ATS away vs. non div opp
Bad: Playoff road favorites off playoff road favorite win are 1-3 ATS
Ugly: Niners are 3-15 ATS all-time vs. Panthers, 0-5 ATS last five away

San Diego at Denver (-10, 54.5)
Good: Chargers QB Phillip Rivers 4-1 ATS as a playoff dog
Bad: Broncos 2-6 SU and ATS last eight playoff games
Ugly: Broncos QB Peyton Manning 1-6 ATS home favorite vs. San Diego

      Highway Blues

Life on the road for Wild Card round teams who won at home has been rocky at best, especially if those who grabbed the cash as well.

These highwaymen are just 13-37 SU and 18-30-2 ATS in this role against well-rested higher-seeded foes.

And if these same Wild Card winners take to the road against .750 or less opponents, they dip to a filthy 3-24 SU and 8-18-1 ATS in these affairs.

Indianapolis will try its best to avoid becoming road kill this week.

      Stat Of The Week

In NFL Divisional Round playoff game history since 1990, there have been only two home underdogs. They both won the game straight up.

Baylor Bears at Iowa State Cyclones (-7.5, OFF)

Two of the premier power forwards in the nation face off when No. 7 Iowa State hosts No. 9 Baylor in a Big 12 showdown Tuesday night. Melvin Ejim is averaging 17.7 points and 7.6 rebounds for the Cyclones and the 6-6 senior has led the way with four double-doubles this season. Cory Jefferson is a 6-9 senior for the Bears who’s averaging 14.2 points and 8.3 rebounds with five double-doubles.

Baylor should benefit from its size advantage with 7-1 center Isaiah Austin occupying the middle and 6-8 forward Rico Gathers averaging 7.9 points and 7.8 rebounds off the bench. Iowa State does well with the size it has, as 6-6 forward Dustin Hogue is averaging 12.6 points and 9.6 rebounds and 6-4 guard DeAndre Kane does it all with 15 points, 7.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game. Kane won Big 12 Player of the Week honors the last two weeks and an Iowa State player has won the award in six of nine weeks overall.

A key for the Bears could be the contributions from starting guards Brady Heslip and Kenny Chery. Heslip is shooting 47.9 percent from beyond the arc, which has helped open up things up on the interior, and Chery is second on the team at 11.5 points, though he’s coming off back-to-back games in single digits for the first time this season. A wild card for the Bears could be 6-7 sophomore forward Taurean Prince, who is coming off consecutive games in double figures for the first time in his career.

ABOUT IOWA STATE (13-0, 8-3 ATS):
Prince could find himself matched up against another 6-7 sophomore forward in Georges Niang, who is second in scoring for the Cyclones at 15.9. Niang has scored at least 14 points in each of the last seven games and presents a challenge because of his ability to score from inside and outside. Monte Morris, a freshman guard, will be looking to reach double figures in scoring in three straight games for the first time this season.

                TRENDS:

                * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
                * Home team is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.
                * Baylor is 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings.
                * Baylor is 0-7 ATS in the last seven meetings at Iowa State.

                TIP-INS:

                1. The Cyclones can set a program record with their 14th consecutive victory.

                2. Iowa State has had at least four players score in double figures in every game this season.

                3. Prince scored 15 first-half points all of last season, but combined for 26 first-half points in the last two games.

Ohio State at Michigan State: What bettors need to know
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ohio State Buckeyes at Michigan State Spartans (OFF)

Aaron Craft produced two of the best offensive games of his four-year career against Michigan State last season and the Ohio State point guard will try to continue that trend when the No. 3 Buckeyes travel to the No. 4 Spartans for a Big Ten clash Tuesday. Craft scored his career high of 21 points when these teams met in their second conference game last season, and came back with 20 three weeks later when they collided in the conference tournament semifinal. Craft, who has just one other 20-point game in collegiate career, enters this matchup on a roll after earning Big Ten Player of the Week honors for his efforts last week against Purdue and Nebraska.

Michigan State will counter with shooting guard Gary Harris, who has battled an ankle injury that kept him out three games this season, but appears to be on the mend after scoring 26 points in 37 minutes – both season highs – in a 73-56 victory Saturday at Indiana. Michigan State 6-10 forward Adreian Payne poses a possible matchup problem, but will need to get more shot attempts than he did the last two games if he expects to have an impact. Payne, an Ohio native, combined for 11 field-goal attempts and nine points in the last two games after taking double-digit shot attempts and scoring no fewer than 16 in the previous five games.

                LINE:
The line and total are currently off the board.

ABOUT OHIO STATE (15-0, 8-6 ATS):
The Buckeyes have been successful mostly because of their defense. Ohio State is surrendering an average of 54.9 points, tied for third-best in the nation, and has not allowed an opponent to hit the 70-point mark this season, their longest such streak since they went 22 games during the 2010-11 season. Perimeter defense has been a specialty as the Buckeyes are limiting the opposition to 24.3-percent shooting from 3-point distance, the lowest mark in Division I.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (13-1, 7-4-2 ATS):
The Spartans are shooting 39.3 from 3-point distance, which puts 38th in the nation. Harris has seen his long-range efficiency drop off this season, but point guard Keith Appling has connected on 47.2 percent of his 3s, up from 32 percent last season and 25 percent the year before. Travis Trice has been nearly as effective from downtown, hitting on 44.4 percent of his tries from beyond the arc.

                TRENDS:

                * Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
                * Home team is 3-0-1 ATS in the last four meetings.
                * Ohio State is 4-1-1 ATS in its last six meetings at Michigan State.
                * Underdog is 6-2-1 ATS in the last nine meetings.

                TIP-INS:

                1. Ohio State’s bench has outscored the opposition’s reserves 325-177 this season.

                2. Craft, who averages 4.9 assists, needs 39 to pass Bruce Douglas of Illinois (1982-86) to become the Big Ten’s all-time leader.

                3. Michigan State F Matt Costello could return to the starting lineup in his third game back after missing four in December with mononucleosis.

Spurs at Grizzlies: What bettors need to know
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Memphis Grizzlies (+5.5, 196.5)

The San Antonio Spurs' frontcourt depth is about to be tested - a notion that's all too familiar for their next opponent. The Spurs will be without center Tiago Splitter when they travel to Memphis on Tuesday to face the Grizzlies, who are still without big man Marc Gasol. Memphis has gone 8-12 since losing Gasol to a sprained knee to slip 3 1/2 games behind eighth-place Dallas in the Western Conference.

The Spurs whipped the Clippers 116-92 on Saturday, but their fourth win in five games came at a price as Splitter was lost for three-to-five weeks with a sprained right shoulder. "Very, very tough," veteran forward Tim Duncan told the San Antonio Express-News. "It's going to be a big loss for us. He's been playing great for us all year." If the Grizzlies can start winning at home - they're 7-11 at FedEx Forum - they might be able to make a charge with six of their next seven games on their own floor.

                          TV:
8 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (San Antonio), SportSouth (Memphis)

                          LINE:
The Grizzlies opened as 5.5-point home dogs. The total opened at 196.5.

                          POWER RANKINGS:
                          San Antonio (-13.8) - Memphis (-5) + home court (-3) = San Antonio -5.8

ABOUT THE SPURS (26-8, 18-16 ATS):
San Antonio boasts one of the most productive benches in the league but it's getting thin in the post with Splitter out. Second-year center Aron Baynes likely will need to pick up extra minutes to spell Boris Diaw (9.4 points, 3.5 rebounds), who is expected to be back after missing Saturday's game with strep throat. Fortunately for the Spurs, they don't count on much offensive output from the center position thanks to five other players averaging double digits in scoring with Tony Parker (17.7 points, 6.2 assists) and Tim Duncan (14.2 points, 9.5 rebounds) leading the way.

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (15-18, 13-19-1 ATS):
Memphis dominated the second half of a 112-84 win at Detroit on Sunday and has won five of its last eight following a five-game skid. The Grizzlies certainly miss Gasol, especially at the defensive end, but they still have a strong inside-outside duo with point guard Mike Conley (17.2 points, 6.3 assists) and bruiser Zach Randolph (17.1 points, 10.5 rebounds). Jon Leuer has shown signs of becoming a bigger contributor at the offensive end - the third-year forward matched his career high with 23 points against the Pistons.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Spurs are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
                          * Spurs are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings in Memphis.
                          * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
                          * Road team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
