    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Oklahoma 45, Alabama 31-- Rough end to season for Crimson Tide, who gained 516 yards but turned ball over five times (-4).

-- Oregon 70, Utah 68 OT-- Ducks stay unbeaten with tough road win.

-- Washington 76, Arizona State 65-- Discouraging loss for Sun Devils; an NCAA team doesn't get beaten this badly at home.

-- Northern Arizona 73, Montana 65-- Changing of the guard in Big Sky?

-- Arizona 60, Washington State 25-- Game was 28-7 at the half. Cougars' leading scorer Lacy had an emergency appendectomy Saturday.

-- Pepperdine 70, Santa Clara 61-- Surprising Waves are 3-0 in WCC.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff on a snowy day........

    13) Chicago Bears locked up Jay Cutler thru 2020 with a new contract; whether you like the signing or not, have to like the decisive nature of it. They didn’t leave anyone hanging and now have their future course plotted. All Cutler has to do now is play better, a lot better.

    12) It also means no starting QBs will be free agents this winter; only way to upgrade at QB is thru the draft or getting lucky with a backup/free agent.

    11) If you look at NFL Wild Card games over the last 10 years, favorites are 14-6 vs spread in the games involving the #’s 3-6 seeds.

    10) Over last two years, favorites are 4-0 vs spread in games where spread was 4 or less points. This is the 4th time in five years the NFC’s #5 seed is favored over the 4-seed, but the #4 seed won four of last five years.

    9) Bowl losers who return to the same bowl the next year are 14-14 vs spread; 6-5 if favored, 8-9 if the underdog.

    8) Toronto Raptors have gotten better since trading leading scorer Rudy Gay to the Kings; in their first ten games without Gay, Raptors were 7-3 and averaging 30 more passes per game. Ball moves better when one guy isn’t taking the majority of the shots.

    7) You see a college basketball score that surprises you, check out the box score; Pepperdine upset BYU the other night. Waves were 13-24 from the arc, BYU 1-11. That’s how upsets happen.

    6) Creighton had odd numbers in its easy win over Marquette Tuesday; Bluejays were just 4-4 from foul line and 12-27 inside the arc, but made 13-35 outside the arc. Rarely does a team with almost no offense inside win so easily, but Creighton beat Marquette by 18 in its Big East debut.

    5) Over the last 14 years, Dallas Cowboys are 2-12 in Week 17; in a league where very few teams have a big margin for error, this is very bad.

    4) Oregon State/Texas Tech both lost their last five regular season games, then went out and won their bowl games easily. Go figure. Handicapping bowls can be a very frustrating experience.

    3) Not pleased with people bashing Bill O’Brien for leaving Penn State. No way was he told the truth when they hired him, about how deep the trouble was they were in with the NCAA. He busted his butt for two years, kept the Lions relevant and now has moved on to a much better job in the NFL, with a team that was a division favorite four months ago. Penn State can't go to a bowl until 2016, when current freshmen are juniors/seniors.

It’s a business, plain and simple. If O’Brien doesn’t win games, he's going to get fired; he has to make as much money as he can, while he can.

    2) Hard to believe, but Chargers didn’t play games on artificial turf this season and Chiefs only played one; both teams are on carpet this weekend.

    1) Tip of the cap to retiring linebacker London Fletcher, who played 16 games a year for 16 years, after playing D-III ball in college at John Carroll (Don Shula’s alma mater). Fletcher won a Super Bowl ring with the Rams; he had a terrific career that he should be very proud of.

College basketball's three biggest Under teams
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many college basketball handicappers expected a wave of Overs to hit early into the schedule, with referees clamping down on hand checks and touch fouls. And while the whistles have been plentiful, scores haven’t exactly been soaring over the number.

In fact, heading into Thursday’s slate of games, the Under is hitting in more than 57 percent of college hoops games this season.

Here’s a look at the three biggest Under wonders heading into the 2014 side of the schedule:

      UC Irvine Anteaters (6-7 SU, 2-10 O/U)

The Anteaters continue to fall under the total, scoring 76.1 points for and allowing 71.4 points against. UC Irvine just wrapped a stretch of six road games in seven outings, staying below the number in five of those away tilts. It’s home to Morgan State Thursday.

      Bradley Braves (5-9 SU, 0-9-1 O/U)

Bradley manages only 64.7 points per game and attempts only 54.6 field goals a night. The Braves have stayed below 60 points in each of their last four outings, paying out for the Under in all four games. Bradley’s defense has slipped a bit in that span, giving up an average of 71.5 points – a jump from its season average of 68.5 points against per game.

      Kansas State Wildcats (10-3 SU, 1-9-1 O/U)

The Wildcats rank ninth nationally in defense, giving up only 57.8 points per game. However, outside of non-conference matchups with Gonzaga and Ole Miss, KSU really hasn’t been tested much on that end of the floor. Kansas State is shooting only 56.3 field goals an outing for 67.4 points per game. With conference play kicking off in the Big 12 this weekend, KSU’s defense could be exposed and those Under winners could disappear.

Clippers at Mavericks: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Dallas Mavericks (+1.5, 203)

After shaking off a run of three losses in four games with a thrashing over Charlotte on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Clippers travel to Dallas on Friday for a tilt with the Mavericks. Los Angeles snuck in a win over lowly Utah on Saturday but hadn't been clicking in nearly two weeks before dominating the Bobcats. Coach Doc Rivers told reporters it was refreshing to see the Clippers returning to form, saying, "The ball was flying around the floor (against Charlotte) and that makes us really good."

Dallas is enjoying a three-game winning streak, but Wednesday's victory at Washington left the Mavericks less than satisfied. "We set the NBA back a couple years," forward Dirk Nowitzki told the Dallas Morning News of the 87-78 win, in which Dallas equaled its season low in points. Monta Ellis led the Mavericks with 23 points against the Wizards in what coach Rick Carlisle called the guard's best game since coming to Dallas as a free agent last summer.

                  TV:
8:30 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), FSN Southwest (Dallas)

                  LINE:
The Mavericks opened as 1.5-point home dogs. The total opened at 204.5 and has moved down to 203.

                  POWER RANKINGS:
                  Los Angeles (-12.5) - Dallas (-8.2) + home court (-3) = Dallas -1.3

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (22-12, 20-14 ATS):
Forward Jared Dudley, who had been shooting at less than 39 percent from the field in a six-game stretch prior to Wednesday's win, knocked down 7-of-10, including 6-of-9 3-pointers, for 20 points against Charlotte. The jolt in production should provide a major lift in morale for the seventh-year pro, who told reporters after the game, "For me, to see the ball go in once or twice breeds confidence." Los Angeles dished out a season-high 36 assists against the Bobcats, led by 14 from Chris Paul, whose 11.3 assists per game leads the NBA.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (19-13, 18-14 ATS):
Dallas overcame an eight-point third quarter deficit against Washington, limiting the Wizards to 17 points in the fourth quarter to win an ugly one. "It ain't always going to be perfect," forward Shawn Marion said, "but a win is a win." Ellis knocked down six free throws in the waning seconds Wednesday, prompting Carlisle to sing his praises for a well-rounded effort, saying, "He had such great command of the game. He made big plays and his string of free throws at the end of the game was the decisive factor."

                  TRENDS:

                  * Home team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
                  * Favorite is 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
                  * Clippers are 3-10 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
                  * Clippers are 1-5 ATS in the last six meetings in Dallas.

                  BUZZER BEATERS:

                  1. Los Angeles (104.7 points per game) and Dallas (103.3) each rank among the NBA's top 10 in scoring.

                  2. Nowitzki and PG Jose Calderon combined to shoot 6-of-28 from the field Wednesday and Calderon is shooting less than 35 percent in his last four games.

                  3. Clippers SG J.J. Redick had a cast removed from his right hand but is still at least three weeks away from returning to the lineup, recovering from a broken wrist.
