    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Cleveland Brown players reacted angrily to Rob Chudzinski’s firing after only one year; wonder what my Vegas cab driver/Browns’ fan thinks? He wasn’t a happy man when I was in his cab on the 22nd; doubt he is any happier today.

-- By way of reference, Bill Walsh was 8-24 his first two years with the 49ers; Dick Vermeil was 9-23 his first two years with the Rams. You need continuity/patience to cultivate a winning team.

-- David Frohardt-Lane is a trader with graduate degree in Statistics; he won the LVH handicapping contest, worth a cool $557,850. Hard contest to win; congrats.

-- Arizona Cardinals finished 1st in NFL in rush defense for first time ever. -- Tulsa coach Danny Manning got tossed out of Sunday’s game at Maryland by ref Karl Hess, who has an NBA-sized ego (his nickname is King Karl). Manning is having trouble getting traction with his program.

-- Now that Jim Schwartz is out in Detroit, you wonder if the Nick Saban rumors will gain steam.

    *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Ranking the NFL's playoff teams......

    12) Chargers—Were lined up illegally trying to block Chiefs’ GW FG that missed Sunday; refs didn’t call it. Stupid rule to begin with, but seems like a hard one to screw up. I mean, there are three 300-pound guys who aren’t where they’re legally supposed to be. Anyway, if you have the onions to run a fake punt in OT, you deserve to win, so good for Mike McCoy.

    11) Packers—Aaron Rodgers was a modern-day Willis Reed Sunday, coming back from injury to lead his team to a last-minute win by throwing a TD on 4th down; tremendous exhibition of guts. He got help from the refs early; don’t hit the guy with the broken collarbone, but still, excellent performance.

    10) Chiefs- Kudos to KC’s front office/coaches for developing enough talent to almost win a game when they sat out 20 starters. This team won two games LY; now they’re a playoff team. Andy Reid doesn’t look good in red, but he is your Coach of the Year.

    9) Bengals—Won/covered all eight home games, which doesn’t happen much; they’ll struggle on road, but hopefully they’ll win a playoff game to take some heat off Marvin Lewis, who has been criticized by nitwits for not having playoff success. Nitwits forget that before Lewis got to Cincy, the Bengals were a freakin’ joke. He has done an excellent job.

    8) Eagles—How was Chip Kelly an assistant coach at New Hampshire for fifteen years? Seriously, all of a sudden someone discovered he was really smart? Hey, Art Briles/Gus Malzahn were high school coaches.....

    7) Colts—Not really sure what to make of them; they got spanked at home by the Rams, but beat 49ers-Seattle. Think spread on their game with Chiefs is little light, Luck having big edge at QB over Alex Smith.

    6) 49ers—How did Cardinals/Ravens cut Anquan Boldin loose? Excellent player, a big WR with great hands/toughness. He started out at Florida State. as a QB. Curious why he has played on three different teams.

    5) Saints— Falcons could’ve done them a huge favor by upsetting Carolina, giving Saints a bye/home field in conference semis. Now road-challenged NO has to go to Philly and win. Interesting game.

    4) Patriots—If Brady doesn’t win MVP, there should be no such award; his best receiver is looking at life in prison, the next two best guys are hurt half the time, yet Patriots continue to win. Brady is one of the three best QBs I’ve ever seen, in terms of leadership/winning, and I’m no New England fan.

    3) Panthers—Lost at home to Seattle, so they have to be behind Seahawks, but they’ve got defense to win on foreign soil. Need Steve Smith healthy; not sure if he’ll be back for first playoff game.

    2) Seahawks—Not sold on Russell Wilson as a great QB; if you make him beat you passing, not sure he can. Their defense plays with great energy, they’ll be very tough to beat on their home field, and have already posted a shutout at Swamp Stadium, where the Super Bowl is being played.

    1) Broncos—Shaky on this ranking with Von Miller done for year, but #18 has put up amazing numbers this year, should get Welker back for playoffs. CBS is praying for Pats-Broncos AFC title game.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

      Letdown spot

The San Diego Chargers were the team of destiny in Week 17. The Football Gods smiled upon the Bolts, handing losses to the Ravens and Dolphins while guiding a 36-yard Nick Novak field goal between the uprights in overtime to defeat the Chiefs and punch San Diego’s ticket to the tournament.

The Chargers are peaking at the right time, winning four in a row to make the playoff cut, but what goes up comes crashing down. San Diego is primed for a letdown spot after a crazy final week of the schedule in Cincinnati, where books have tabbed the Bolts as touchdown underdogs. The extended forecast in Cincy is calling for a 46 percent chance of rain and snow and temperatures in the mid 30s.

      Lookahead spot

The Golden State Warriors cross the country for an East Coast road run this week, looking to pick apart the weak Eastern Conference competition. Golden State nearly got caught going easy on the Cavaliers Sunday night, needing overtime to steal a 108-104 road win and are staring down a potential lookahead spot in Orlando Tuesday.

The Warriors take on the Magic on New Year’s Eve – a dangerous spot in itself. Not only does Golden State run the risk of looking past Orlando to their Florida party plans Tuesday night but could also be ignoring Orlando with the NBA champion Miami Heat on the schedule Thursday. Orlando is coming off back-to-back home wins – SU and ATS.

      Schedule spot

The Philadelphia Flyers are currently in the midst of a six-game road trip, taking the Flyers to the opposite side of the map. Philadelphia needed a shootout to edge Edmonton Saturday and take on the Canucks Monday, opening a stretch of three games in four nights that spans New Year’s Day.

Philadelphia takes on Vancouver and Calgary in back-to-back nights before making the trip up the mountain to face the Colorado Avalanche on Jan. 2. Playing in Colorado is a tough task in its own, but the thin air will have extra impact on Philadelphia coming off a grueling road schedule.

NFL Opening Line Report: Wild Card Weekend odds

A wild Week 17 made for an even wilder Wild Card Weekend in the NFL. That’s a whole lotta “wild”.

Those furious finishes have oddsmakers carefully plotting out the spreads and totals for the first four games of the NFL postseason. We talk with Peter Korner, founder of the Nevada-based odds service The Sports Club, about the opening odds for the NFL Wild Card Weekend matchups.

Kansas City Chiefs at Indianapolis Colts (-2.5, 46.5)

Indianapolis rolled into the postseason with three-straight wins, including a 23-7 victory over the Chiefs. Kansas City, on the other hand, went 2-5 down the stretch including a narrow loss to San Diego with all its starters in Nike sideline gear Sunday.

“I don’t think resting starters is a bad thing,” says Korner. “At this point in the season, one game won’t ruin momentum or slow down players from clicking. This line is based on the Colts current play. Indianapolis has shown very well recently and they’re coming on strong. We really like this number.”

New Orleans Saints at Philadelphia Eagles (-2.5, 54.5)

Football bettors should keep an eye on the weather for Saturday’s game at Lincoln Financial Field. The early forecast is calling for partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the high 20s, as of Monday morning. The Saints’ road woes are well documented – going 1-7 ATS away from New Orleans – and is the reason why the Eagles are favorites.

“This being an away game is the biggest factor here,” says Korner. “Philadelphia has the momentum going into this game but this being outdoors and with the possible elements, is keeping this spread from being on the New Orleans side.”

Korner says the weather could have an impact on not only the total but could give the Eagles the edge if the forecast does turn nasty.

“The Saints love to air it out while the Eagles are built more for the run,” he says. “If the weather turns inclement, then it’s defiantly conducive to what Philadelphia wants to do.”

San Diego Chargers at Cincinnati Bengals (-7, 46)

Korner and his stable of oddsmakers sent out a suggested spread of Bengals -6 for this Sunday game. However, books have upped that number as high as a touchdown with money coming in on the home side.

“We thought we’d keep it lower, being a competitive playoff game,” Korner says. “But that’s been driven up. I think anyone that wants to bet San Diego should wait it out and see if this spread goes higher to 7.5.”

San Francisco 49ers at Green Bay Packers (+2.5, 48.5)

The Packers got into the postseason with a thrilling win over Chicago. Green Bay opened as a home underdog versus the San Francisco team picking up steam at the right time. The Niners have won six straight, going 4-2 ATS in that span.

“The difference here is the San Francisco defense,” says Korner. “This could be a letdown for Green Bay coming off that big win. Weather will be a factor in this one too.”

Korner says the total could see major adjustments depending on the forecast at Lambeau Field. There is a 25 percent chance of snow and temperatures are expected to dip into the low teens – a far cry from the warm weather in the Bay Area.

“The total is a little high for this one,” he says. “However, a few weeks back when we had all that sloppy weather, all the games went Over. I think that is still in the minds of bettors as we’re looking at weather playing a possible role in three of the four playoff games.”

NFL weather report: An early look at Wild Card Weekend weather

Weather could play a role in three of the four NFL Wild Card Weekend games, with cold, rain and snow in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday.

Here’s a look at the early forecast for Philadelphia, Cincinnati and Green Bay.

New Orleans Saints at Philadelphia Eagles (-2.5, 54.5)

The early forecast for Philadelphia calls for partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid 20s with winds blowing SSW at 6mph from corner to corner. The Eagles have won four straight at home since the weather turned cold while the Saints have struggled in outdoor venues and average only 17.8 points per road game compared to an average of 34 points at home.

San Diego Chargers at Cincinnati Bengals (-7, 46)

The Chargers could take on the cold Ohio winter in Cincinnati Sunday. The extended forecast calls for a 46 percent chance of snow and rain with winds blowing SSW at 7 mph, cooling gametime temperatures in to mid 30s. The Bengals are a perfect 8-0 ATS at home while the Chargers 4-3-1 ATS on the road this season.

San Francisco 49ers at Green Bay Packers (+2.5, 48.5)

The frozen tundra of Lambeau Field will make an appearance during the Wild Card Weekend, with temperatures in Green Bay expected to plummet into the low teens for this matchup. The forecast is also calling for 25 percent chance of snow and winds blowing NNW at 5 mph. The Packers were just 3-5 ATS as hosts while the Niners boast a 7-1 ATS mark on the road.
