    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Most popular, least popular picks in the LVH Super Contest, where 1,034 contestants pick five games each week of the NFL season........they paid $1,500 each to be in this contest, by the way.

    Most pop. (42-57-4 vs spread)
    1) Packers +4.5-- 510 - W
    2) Falcons 214 - W
    3) Steelers 200 - W
    4) Eagles 190 - L
    5) Jaguars 188 - L
    6) Cowboys 187 - W

    Least popular (51-49-2)
    32) Colts 26 - W
    31) Bears -4.5-- 60 - L
    30) Texans 61 - L
    29) Titans 65 - W
    28) Broncos 66 - W
    27) Buccaneers 79 - L

    *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday......

    16) Panthers 21, Falcons 20-- Carolina had nine sacks, as Falcons ended up 2-6 in games decided by less than seven points. Panthers get first round bye in playoffs, which could help WR Steve Smith get healthy for playoffs.

    15) Packers 33, Bears 28-- Aaron Rodgers is pretty damn good, throwing for 318 yards, including the division-winning 48-yard pass to Randall Cobb with 0:38 left, in his first game action since November 4. Legendary stuff. Easy to look at the Bears and wonder if firing Lovie Smith was the right move.

    14) Titans 16, Texans 10-- Houston is the first team in NFL history to start season 2-0 and finish 2-14; rumors were running wild Saturday night that they want to hire Penn State's Bill O'Brien as their new coach. If O'Brien leaves, it could be Titans' Munchak, a PSU alum, who replaces him in Happy Valley. .

    13) Steelers 20, Browns 7-- Credit to Pitt for clawing back to 8-8 after its horrific 0-4 start; if Chiefs make a 41-yard FG at end of regulation, Steelers would've made the playoffs. Not sure why, but Browns are apparently going to fire Rob Chudzinski after one season as HC.

    12) Giants 20, Redskins 6-- Washington would have 2nd pick in the draft, except they traded it to the Rams for RGIII; Skins would've been accused of tanking games if they owned that pick, thats how bad they were in December. Whoever replaces Shanahan will be Snyder's 7th coach in 15 years.

    11) Bengals 34, Ravens 17-- Cincinnati won/covered all eight home games, and will host San Diego in playoffs next week. Baltimore was awful in red zone, scoring five TDs on last 20 red zone drives. Game they won in Detroit when Tucker kicked the six FGs was a red flag- no TDs.

    10) Colts 30, Jaguars 10-- Underrated story is how well Indy has done in post-Manning era; not that easy to replace a legend. Not sure where Jaguars are headed, but an offseason with no changes in the front office/coaching staff might help. Stability is good.

    9) Eagles 24, Cowboys 22-- Dallas fought hard but fell short and finishes 8-8 for third year in row. Eagles get home game with Saints next week- not many people thought Kelly would do this well in pros. Odd decision to throw ball on 4th-and-1 on Philly 40 down 17-16 was Cowboys' undoing in this game.

    8) Jets 20, Dolphins 7-- All Miami had to do to make playoffs was beat either Buffalo or the Jets; they scored one TD on 23 drives in two games. Rex Ryan went 8-8 with a rookie QB; he deserves to stay on as coach. .

    7) Vikings 14, Lions 13-- Detroit went +2 in turnovers, still managed to lose 15th game in last 16 visits to Twin Cities. Minnesota will play outdoors next two years, while their new stadium is built. If I was a Lion fan and Detroit does not fire coach Schwartz, someone would be getting an angry phone call.

    6) Patriots 34, Bills 20-- 4:25 start shows how little NFL cares for fans who buy tickets; how was this not a 1:00 start? Its freakin' December 29, in winter in the Northeast. Not a critical game, so not a TV decision. Patriots are 20-1 in last 21 games with Buffalo, winning last 13 played in Foxboro.

    5) Saints 42, Bucs 17-- TV types saying Saints would be better off next week in a dome, but they got waxed in St Louis and barely beat Atlanta in the Georgia Dome. If you own the Bucs, do you let Penn State have Schiano?

    4) Broncos 34, Raiders 14-- Oakland lost its last six games, was outscored 66-16 in first half of its last two home games. Where do they look for a QB? McGloin? Sanchez? Draft? They're out of salary cap hell now, so they should field a better team next year. for Denver, its Super Bowl or bust.

    3) 49ers 23, Cardinals 20-- Niners opened season with 34-28 home win over Packers, now they'll play playoff game in Lambeau, where Kaepernick's running ability is going to be important. Terrific season for Arizona, just bad timing to be in a tough division.

    2) Chargers 27, Chiefs 24, ot-- KC sat 20 of 22 starters, gave QB Daniel his first NFL start and damn near won. Succop pushed game-winning 41-yard FG wide right, a kick that would've put Steelers in playoffs. San Diego makes it to the playoffs; no one thought that was happening.

    1) Seahawks 27, Rams 9-- Seattle gets #1 seed in NFC, Rams get #'s 2-13 picks in first round of draft next May. NFL teams should pick backup QBs who can play, not guys who know the offense. Clemens is a good teammate, but you ain't beating anyone good on road with him playing QB.

NFL betting: 49ers, Colts, Eagles, Bengals open as faves

With the Week 17 finale between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys complete, all of the lines for the opening round of the NFL playoffs have hit the board at wagering outlets.

Despite a valiant effort from backup QB Kyle Orton, the Dallas Cowboys will miss out on the postseason as the Eagles triumphed 24-22. Philadelphia will host the New Orleans Saints in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Eagles have opened as 2.5-point home faves with the total opening at 55.

In the other NFC matchup, the San Francisco 49ers are currently 2.5-point faves as they travel to the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field to face Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The total is currently 49.5.

In the AFC, the Cincinnati Bengals are 7.5-point faves as they host the San Diego Chargers. The total for this game is currently 47.

Finally, the other AFC matchup pits the Indianpolis Colts against the Kansas City Chiefs with the home team Colts as 2-point faves with a total of 47.

Toledo at Kansas: What bettors need to know
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Toledo Rockets at Kansas Jayhawks

Kansas looks to extend its nonconference home win streak to 68 games on Monday when the 16th-ranked Jayhawks host surprising Toledo. The unbeaten Rockets, averaging 86.2 points, are off to the program’s best start since the 1966-67 team opened with 14 consecutive wins. Toledo faces its toughest test against Kansas, which shot 54.3 percent in a convincing 86-64 victory over Georgetown on Dec. 21.

Forward Perry Ellis, averaging 13.3 points and 6.3 rebounds, left the Georgetown game early in the second half after taking an elbow to the back of his head, but he’s expected to be at full strength against the Rockets. Toledo boasts a plus-7.3 rebounding margin, but the Rockets will be tested by the Jayhawks’ formidable frontline. Freshman Joel Embiid has been a revelation as the Jayhawks’ starting center, and forward Tarik Black was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after collecting 17 points and six rebounds against Georgetown.

                TV:
                8 p.m. ET, ESPN3

                ABOUT TOLEDO (12-0):
Five different players average in double figures for the Rockets, who are coming off an 85-66 win over Coppin State on Saturday. Senior wing Rian Pearson led the Rockets in scoring, rebounding and steals in each of the past two seasons, and he’s continued his strong play by averaging 16.6 points while shooting 53.8 percent from the field. The Rockets can’t compete with Kansas’ size near the basket, but five players average more than four rebounds with 6-6 forward J.D. Weatherspoon leading at six per game.

                ABOUT KANSAS (8-3):
Coach Bill Self gave his team four days off after the Georgetown win, and the break came at a good time for players such as freshman guard Wayne Selden, who has cooled since scoring 15 points against Duke on Nov. 12. “Since the Duke game, I think he’s been up and down,” Self told KUSports.com. “His health hasn’t been great, but it’s not anything structurally that’s bothering him. He just probably hasn’t felt 100 percent much in the last month or so.” Freshman guard Andrew Wiggins is averaging 15.5 points, but he’s missed 15 of his last 21 shots over the last two games.

                TRENDS:

                * Rockets are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games.
                * Under is 9-2 in Jayhawks last 11 Monday games.
                * Jayhawks are 5-0 ATS in their last five vs. Mid-American.
                * Under is 7-1 in Rockets last eight games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.

                TIP-INS:

                1. Kansas has outrebounded its opponent in 10 of its first 11 games.

                2. The teams are meeting for only the second time, with Kansas winning 68-58 on Dec. 9, 2006.

                3. G Julius Brown averages 7.3 assists for Toledo, which has won six straight road games dating back to last season.

                  Monday, December 30

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pucking the Trends: NHL's weekly betting news and notes
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Dec. 22 to 28.

                  Hot team

                  Anaheim Ducks (2-0 SU)

Stop us if you've heard this one before. The Ducks have been the class of the NHL for the past month, winning 10 games in a row and earning points in 13 straight. The holiday break limited Anaheim to just two games over a seven-day stretch, but it made good by earning 3-2 victories over the Washington Capitals and Phoenix Coyotes. The Ducks will face their most difficult test in a while this week, taking on the San Jose Sharks in a pivotal home-and-home series, while the week ends with a home game against lowly Edmonton.

                  Cold team

                  Minnesota Wild (0-3 SU)

A hot start to the season has been vaporized by a terrible five-week stretch that has seen Minnesota go just 5-10-1 while losing their starting goaltender (Josh Harding) and top goal-scoring option (Zach Parise) along the way. The Wild played three road games last week, and struggled in each of them - dropping consecutive 4-1 decisions to the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers before losing a 6-4 slugfest in Winnipeg. The coming week offers some relief - home games against the Islanders and Sabres should help - but a game against St. Louis on New Year's Eve will be a big test.

                  Best Over play

                  Chicago Blackhawks (3-0 O/U)

Chicago betrayed bettors the week prior to the holiday break, playing three straight Unders after boasting one of the best O/U records in the league to that point. So how did the Blackhawks respond? With vigor, of course. The league-leading Chicago offense reeled off 18 goals in three games this week, earning one-sided victories over the New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche before being bested in a shootout by St. Louis. Expect a tighter game Monday against Los Angeles, but road dates against the Isles and Devils could bear more Over fruit.

                  Best Under play

                  New York Rangers (0-2 O/U)

The Rangers were the anti-Blackhawks this week, following up a 4-0-2 Over stretch with consecutive Under plays in a 2-1 shootout win over the Toronto Maple Leafs and a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Washington Capitals. The scoring just hasn't been there for New York, which comes into the start of the week ranked 27th in the league in goals (2.3) despite a power-play ranked 11th (18.9 percent). This week could be a difficult one for the Rangers, who face four-straight road games against Tampa Bay, Florida, Pittsburgh and Toronto.

                  Surveying the schedule

It's called a holiday break, but few teams enjoyed much of a rest period due to the condensed NHL schedule. The Vancouver Canucks were one of the lucky ones, with a full seven days between their previous game against the Winnipeg Jets and Sunday's showdown with the Calgary Flames. The Canucks will make up for it in a big way, playing five times over an eight-day stretch coming out of the break - following up their game in Calgary with a mini-homestand against Philadelphia and Tampa Bay and games in Los Angeles and Anaheim.

Bank shots: NBA's weekly betting news and notes
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Dec. 22 to 28.

Hottest ATS - Indiana Pacers (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS)

The Eastern Conference's hottest ATS play was at it again last week, taking care of business with a one-sided victory over the Boston Celtics and consecutive routs of the Brooklyn Nets. Indiana is now 21-8-0 ATS on the season, providing terrific value despite dealing with increasingly larger spreads along the way. The defense remains one of the stingiest in the NBA, and the Paul George-led offense has proven capable of matching up with the league's other top units. Expect the good times to continue this week with home games against Cleveland and New Orleans and a road date in Toronto.

Coldest ATS - Denver Nuggets (0-3 SU, 0-3 ATS)

The Nuggets have fallen off a cliff in December, losing six straight overall and six in a row ATS. This past week was a particularly galling one for Denver, which managed just 81 points in a home loss to the Golden State Warriors before being blown out in back-to-back road games at New Orleans and Memphis. The week proved to be a microcosm of the season for the Nuggets, who no longer boast one of the league's premier offensive attacks and can't defend to save their lives. The Nuggets have a three-game homestand against Miami, Philadelphia and Memphis before facing the Lakers in L.A.

Best Over play - Atlanta Hawks (2-1 SU, 3-0 O/U)

The Hawks' success as an Over play last week is certainly skewed by the fact that they played three consecutive overtime games - but hey, an over is an over. And bettors shouldn't ignore the fact that Atlanta was a terrific Over bet even before the OT spree as it has now gone over in eight-straight games and is 20-10 O/U for the season, the second-best mark in the conference. However, the loss of leading scorer Al Horford to a torn pec may make it difficult to maintain that pace. Atlanta plays road games against Orlando, Boston and Chicago and hosts Golden State this week.

Best Under play - Chicago Bulls (1-1 SU, 0-2 O/U)

The holiday week provided the Bulls with some much-needed rest - and bettors with a solid under play in a week where the over dominated. Chicago opened the week with one of its trademark defensive efforts, holding the Brooklyn Nets to 35.2 percent from the field in a 95-78 triumph. The Bulls then followed it up with one of its worst efforts of the season, a 105-83 setback to the Dallas Mavericks. Chicago has been a consistent Under play - going 3-7 in the last 10 - and will be a decent bet to continue that trend this week with games versus Memphis, Toronto, Boston and Atlanta.

                          Surveying the schedule

Apparently the Detroit Pistons have jelled more quickly than oddsmakers had anticipated. The retooled Pistons have been one of the best Over plays so far this season, though that trend has shifted with Unders in each of their previous two contests. Part of that could be attributed to a packed schedule as no team in the East has played more games through Saturday than the Pistons (32). That's what makes the coming week a pivotal one - Detroit plays just once in the next seven days, hosting the Washington Wizards Monday night. Expect a well-rested Detroit team to return to form in January.
