Tuesday (Christmas Eve) Hawaii Bowl:
4* GOY Oregon State -3
1) A longtime successful bowl angle is to play on teams who ended the regular season on a losing streak. That fits Oregon State, a talented team with something to prove that was just a cut below the top teams in the Pac-12, which was the second strongest conference in the country this year.
2) What a GREAT spot to go against Boise State. The brilliant coach has left with the program seemingly headed downward. The new coach isn't here yet, so you have a staff of interim guys who are worried more about their futures.
3) The Mountain West was very weak this year. The fact that a mediocre Fresno State team with a horrid defense almost ran the table is an indication of how soft the league was. Oregon State played a much tougher schedule.
4) Oregon State has a big time QB in Sean Mannion. He had a 36/14 TD/Int ratio and a tremendous WR in Brandin Cooks who had 120, yes, 120 catches this year. He won the Biletnikoff Award for being the country's best receiver.
5) Boise State's pass defense is awful. Combine that with my above point and we have a GREAT MISMATCH.
6) Boise has internal issues. That isn't surprising with an interim coach. They would have had a QB controversy for this game except one of the quarterbacks was suspended for taking a leak off a hotel balcony. He denies it and some of his teammates are standing up for him. In short, what a mess.
7) Oregon State Coach Mike Riley has an excellent 5-1 bowl record, something I always like to see.
All I want for Christmas Santa is to hit my biggest bet of the season!
