    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

NFL trends with Week 16 upon us........

-- Washington covered once in its last eight games as an underdog.

-- Colts are 5-10 in their last fifteen games as a road underdog.

-- Carolina covered 12 of last 17 divisional home games.

-- Miami covered 12 of last 18 divisional road games.

-- Giants covered three of their last eleven road games.

-- Buffalo is 4-9-1 vs spread in last 14 December home games.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.......

    13) How great are the San Antonio Spurs? They sit Duncan/Ginobili for a game in Oakland that is on TNT; the Turner executives can't be real happy about it, especially with Tony Parker hurt, but they beat the Warriors by a hoop anyway. Greg Popovich is one of greatest coaches in NBA history.

    12) I'm sitting at Bishop Gorman HS the other night watching really good high school teams play and the thought struck me that a couple of these kids are only 2-3 years away from being millionaires. Good for them.

    11) I'm watching TV here late at night and someone who looks a lot like Sarah Palin comes on doing commentary and I can't tell if its really her or if it is someone doing a really good job making fun of her- I mean, she is wearing a camouflage shirt on national TV. Turns out the real Sarah Palin is funnier than any of her imitators. How in God's name did she run for Vice-President?

    10) Kobe Bryant broke a bone in the same leg as his torn achilles, is out for six weeks, and you wonder if his career as we knew it is basically over?

    9) Dallas Cowboys are first NFL team since '97 Raiders to lose three games by a single point in the same season.

    8) Do college football players like going to Boise for a bowl? I mean, San Diego State's players basically live in paradise, and they're spending a week in Idaho in December? I'm sure Boise is a fine place, but its cold there. When you think of bowl games, you're usually thinking nice weather.

    7) North Carolina is a combined 50-106 from foul line in its three losses, losses by 3-4-3 points.

    6) Long Beach State 72, USC 71-- 49ers led by 14 at half, hung on for its first D-I win of season; Trojans need better players.

    5) SC Upstate 74, South Carolina 68-- Awful loss for Gamecocks; Frank Martin is having trouble getting his program started. Upstate is 6-5, not a world beater, but they also won at Virginia Tech by a point.

    4) Orioles postponed a news conference to announce Grant Balfour's signing because he has some physical issue; looks like he won't be getting $14M for two years, as originally announced.

    3) In 'n Out Burger has the greatest milkshakes..........ever.

    2) Someone has to explain to me why ESPN employs Skip Bayless and his sidekick, Stephen A Smith? They're ridiculous self-promoting screamers who just provoke argument- they add little in way of intelligent debate. If I ran ESPN, I'd be embarrassed to have those two jackasses on my payroll.

    1) Why is Mike Krzyzewski the only college basketball coach who doesn't do halftime interviews on TV? His assistants always do them. No one gives a rat's ass what his assistants think- he should be doing the interviews.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: Houston Rockets at Indiana Pacers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Rockets at Indiana Pacers (-6.5, 195)

The Indiana Pacers are staring at their longest losing streak and are showing some cracks in their NBA-best defense. The Houston Rockets, who own the NBA’s second-best scoring offense, will take aim at those cracks when they visit the Pacers on Friday. Indiana had a win in hand over the rival Miami Heat on Wednesday before a breakdown in the last few minutes handed them back-to-back losses for the first time this season.

Indiana was outscored 12-2 in the final minutes at Miami to suffer a 97-94 loss but quickly turned the page to focus on the Rockets at practice on Thursday. “I don’t look at their record,” coach Frank Vogel said of Houston. “I look at them as a championship contender. … They’re very capable of putting it all together to beat a team that comes out of the West.” The Rockets surround Dwight Howard with 3-point shooters and drive-and-kick specialists and will see how that style plays against a pair of big front lines in their two-game trip through Indiana and Detroit.

                TV:
8 p.m. ET, ESPN, CSN Houston, FSN Indiana

                POWER RANKINGS:
                Rockets (-10.5) - Pacers (-14.3) + Home Court (-3.0) = Pacers -6.8

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (17-9, 14-11-1 ATS):
Houston has traded wins and losses over the last five games but is coming off a 109-94 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday in which Howard went for 23 points and nine rebounds while appearing to have little issue with the Bulls’ frontcourt. “We have to make sure we play our style of basketball, especially against teams that want to grind you to a pulp,” Rockets coach Kevin McHale said. That style includes pushing the pace and not letting teams like Chicago and Indiana get set in a half-court defense, and running Howard and James Harden through a series of pick-and-rolls.

ABOUT THE PACERS (20-5, 17-8-0 ATS):
Indiana leads the NBA in scoring defense, holding opponents to an average of 90.2 points, but is allowing 98.3 points while going 4-4 over the last eight contests. The Pacers defense was missing a key component for long stretches on Wednesday with center Roy Hibbert dealing with foul problems, and Hibbert is struggling to averages of six points and three rebounds in the last two games. “It’ll be a tough game against the best center in the league right now,” Hibbert told reporters of the meeting with Howard. “He’s going to be a handful, I just have to keep him out of easy points and no easy dunks for him.”

                TRENDS:

                * Under is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings in Indiana.
                * Under is 15-7 in the last 22 meetings.
                * Rockets are 2-7 ATS in the last nine meetings.
                * Rockets are 1-6 ATS in the last seven meetings in Indiana.

                BUZZER BEATERS:

                1. The Pacers have taken three straight in the series and took the two meetings last season by an average of 9.5 points.

                2. Houston G Jeremy Lin (back) missed the last two games but returned to practice on Thursday and is expected back on Friday.

                3. Indiana F Danny Granger (calf) is expected to make his season debut and will come off the bench.

                  NHL

                  Friday, December 20

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beware these NHL teams looking ahead to the holiday hiatus
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NHL takes a three-day hiatus from December 24 to 26 and some teams really need it. With some time away from the grind of the hockey season just around the bend, some squads can get caught looking ahead to the break.

Hockey bettors should beware these three teams before the NHL hits the holiday break:

                  Ottawa Senators (14-16-1-5 SU, 21-15-0 O/U)

Before the break: December 19 vs. Florida Panthers, December 21 vs. Phoenix Coyotes, December 23 vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

The Senators find themselves sixth in the Atlantic Division and have not been able to win back-to-back games in over a month. Following their 5-2 loss to the Devils, the Senators held a closed-door meeting to clear the air.

“(We’re) running out of games to be able to say you're going to get something and have some kind of a season other than a race for the first overall pick,” Ottawa head coach Coach Paul MacLean told the media after that meeting. “Right now we're better in that race than we are to get to the playoffs and that's not acceptable."

The Senators play their remaining games against a Panthers team that has won four straight, Phoenix which is five points behind fifth-place Vancouver and a Penguins team going 9-1-0 over their last 10. It’s obvious that things aren’t going to get any easier for Ottawa before the break.

                  St. Louis Blues (22-7-3-1 SU, 16-13-4 O/U)

Before the break: December 19 vs. Montreal Canadiens, December 21 at Edmonton Oilers, December 23 at Calgary Flames

The Blues play two of their remaining three games on the road leading up to the three-day hiatus. They have struggled to keep players healthy and find themselves without stars once again..

Center David Backes has been ruled out for the second-consecutive game, nursing an upper body injury and is expected to miss the remainder of the week. Center/left winger Vladimir Sobotka is doubtful for the game against the Canadiens with an upper body injury while Jaden Schwartz should return. St. Louis will likely struggle scoring goals and may find its offensive game slowing down before the break.

                  Toronto Maple Leafs (17-16-1-2 SU, 17-18-1 O/U)

Before the break: December 19 vs. Phoenix Coyotes, December 21 vs. Detroit Red Wings, December 23 vs. New York Rangers

Toronto has been sliding in the Eastern Conference standings and has put together a 3-7-0 record over its last 10 games. The Leafs have won only three games in regulation over their last 19 played. While the Leafs have struggled with injuries and suspensions, the lack of effort by players is clearly the core issue.

Toronto’s gameplan needs to be reassessed by choosing roles and lines better suited for the players. The lack of cohesion and effort shown is evidenced by lazy skating and mental errors. The Leafs will continue to struggle until something is done. A break is much needed to re-evaluate the team’s terrible play and the future of head coach Randy Carlyle.

Inside the stats: Good and bad bowl game coaches

                              Down the stretch update

As we outlined in this space last week, the final four weeks of the NFL season is a race to the wire for teams in the playoff chase. It’s also the time teams out of contention put things on cruise control and start preparing for next season.

According to our database some coaches shine while others wine during the final four games down the stretch.

From an ATS standpoint, listed below are coaches in their best and worst roles throughout their NFL career and the situational role in which appear this week. All results are ATS (against the spread).

                              Best Roles:

John Fox, Denver • 6-1 as a favorite of more than nine points
Leslie Frazier, Minnesota • 5-0 away vs. non-division opponents
Ron Rivera, Carolina • 3-0-1 as a favorite
Mike Shanahan, Washington • 8-0 home vs. division foe off a loss

                              Worst Roles:

                              Dennis Allen, Oakland • 0-2-1 off a double-digit loss
Jason Garrett, Dallas • 1-6 vs. division opponents
Greg Schiano, Tampa Bay • 1-3 vs. sub .500 opponents

                              Oil drip

Football teams who have been out-gained in each of their last three games are considered to be “leaking oil” when installed as favorites.

This week’s “leaking oil” favorites in the NFL are Baltimore, New York Jets and St. Louis.

By our count the Jets have been out -gained in each of their last seven games, the Rams in each of their last five, and the Ravens in three straight contests.

                              NFL tax collectors

In the highest-scoring week in NFL history, the average total points per game in the league was a whopping 52.8 last week.

The average game went Over by 6.3 points, adding to the 8.9 points two weeks ago. It was the second consecutive week in which NFL games averaged 52 or more points.

Be prepared to pay a tax on this week’s games, as the average total is at 46.9 point.

Meanwhile, the gift that keeps on giving has been Overs in non-conference games. With another outstanding 3-1 O/U effort last week, these non-conference totals are now 47-15 O/U this season.

With the final week of the schedule a matchup of all division games, the final two plays of the season kick off on Sunday. Those games are: Minnesota at Cincinnati and Pittsburgh at Green Bay.
