    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Each NFL division's record in non-divisional games, against the spread:

    NFC East-- 15-23
    NFC North-- 12-21-2
    NFC South-- 17-17-1
    NFC West-- 26-10-2

    AFC East-- 18-17
    AFC North-- 19-15-2
    AFC South-- 11-23-1
    AFC West-- 22-14

    *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Greetings from America's favorite city

    13) I'll apologize in advance for being erratic with posting times this week, since I'm on vacation in Las Vegas. No snow here, by the way.

    12) Ravens 18, Lions 16-- Justin Tucker was 6-6 on FGs, nailing a 61-yarder to win the game, as Detroit screwed up another game they had no right to lose. People in Alabama can start getting nervous again, because Jim Schwartz will get fired and Nick Saban will be a popular choice to replace him.

Schwartz should've called timeout after the Ravens' 3rd down play on last drive, which would've given his offense another 30 seconds to work with after Baltimore went ahead. Lions are 2-4 this year in games decided by six or less points-- they're not going to win the NFC North in a season where Green Bay and Chicago both lost their starting QB and Minnesota never had one.

    11) People are killing the Lions because they turn the ball over too much, and 30 in 14 games is way too many, but then you realize the Giants have coughed the ball up 39 times this year and you know why they're 5-9.

    10) Cincinnati punter Kevin Huber broke his jaw and cracked a vertebra when he got clocked during a punt return Sunday night. Football is a violent game; if you're standing in the middle of the field, need to have your head on a swivel and protect yourself. Huber didn't do that.

    9) Arizona Cardinals scored a defensive TD in four of their last six games.

    8) Miami Dolphins are 4-3 at home; all seven games were decided by 4 or less points, so Miami should get high renewal rates for 2014 season tickets.

    7) NFC West teams are 19-5-1 vs spread when they're favored to beat a team that isn't in their division.

    6) If you look at the last eight defending Super Bowl champs before this year, they've combined to win one playoff game in the season after their title, which isn't a good trend for the Ravens, who snuck out their last two games in near-miraculous fashion.

    5) Highest over/under in a bowl game: Duke-Texas A&M 73.5.
    Lowest over/under in a bowl game: Michigan State-Stanford, 42.5

Not every bowl game has a total posted yet, but most all of them do.

    4) Rams' tight end Cory Harkey is the son of former big league pitcher Mike Harkey; younger Harkey played college ball at UCLA. His dad was in the big leagues for eight years, appearing in 131 games for five teams.

    3) I highly recommend HBO's show leading up to the outdoor hockey game in Ann Arbor between Toronto-Detroit New Year's Day; HBO has done this show for a few years now and it is very well done. You get access to see stuff that fans do not usually get to see. Good TV.

    2) Nets' Joe Johnson scored 29 points Monday, just in the third quarter. He declined to play the fourth quarter against an overmatched Philly team that may or may not be trying its best to win games. Rumors persist the Sixers are trying to position themselves for next June's draft, and winning games now isn't a part of that equation.

    1) Was in a memorabilia store in Mandalay Bay last night; they've got lot of signed jerseys that are all hideously overpriced, but $1,595 for a jersey signed by Robert Griffin III might be the most unsellable thing in that store.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

      Letdown spot

The Miami Dolphins did what the Cleveland Browns couldn’t Sunday, and that was keep Tom Brady and the Patriots from snatching victory from the clutches of defeat. The Dolphins hung tough in the final seconds with Brady & Co. knocking at the door, winning their third straight game and making a serious push at an AFC Wild Card spot.

The red-hot Fins could have the freeze put on that winning streak at Ralph Wilson Stadium Sunday, where they face the Buffalo Bills. The forecast for Sunday is calling for snow, wind and temperatures dipping into the 20’s. The Bills are 5-1 ATS in Buffalo and already have a win over Miami – 23-21 in Week 7.

      Lookahead spot

The Montreal Canadiens have let their share of the Atlantic Division lead slip away with three losses in their last four games and hit the highway for six straight games, starting with a massive non-conference showdown in St. Louis Thursday night. This stretch spans the holidays, so players are trying to get their Christmas affairs in order before leaving this week.

However, in the hustle and bustle of those plans hide the Phoenix Coyotes. The Habs, who are coming off a stunning 2-1 defeat at the hands of the lowly Florida Panthers Sunday, run the risk of looking past Phoenix Tuesday night. The Coyotes have picked up points in four of their last five road games and open a four-game away stretch in Montreal before coming home after the finale on Dec. 23.

      Schedule spot

The Toronto Raptors have a pretty light week after the heavy drama of the past seven days. The Raptors, fresh of shedding Rudy Gay’s contract from their books, have a lone home game against Charlotte Wednesday before kicking off a four-game road trip in Dallas Saturday. Toronto then plays Oklahoma City and San Antonio – three games in four nights – before the Xmas break.

After dealing Gay to the Sacramento Kings for scraps, many north of the border are pushing for the Raptors to give up on the season and tank, in hopes of landing the No. 1 overall pick. That’s projected to be Toronto’s own Andrew Wiggins – perhaps the only superstar who would actually like to play for the Raptors. No one would blame Toronto for going 0-3 on this Western run, especially not die-hard Raptors fans.

Betting college football teams ending long bowl droughts

One of the best parts about bowl season is watching the schools that haven't made the postseason cut in years finally return to the holiday tradition. While detractors point to the meaninglessness of some of the bowl game calendar, the programs that haven't had the luxury of playing one more game in December show just how special the season is.

Here’s a look at schools ending bowl droughts in 2013, including two matchups that will feature teams that are all ending long droughts.

UNLV (12 Years) vs. North Texas (Eight Years)

Playing on New Year’s Day, UNLV and North Texas will both be ending two of the longest bowl droughts in the NCAA when they square off in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Both schools got over the six-win requirement, with UNLV hitting a 7-5 record and North Texas having a strong year with an 8-4 record in the C-USA.

There isn’t much between these schools, who both managed to be just good enough in mid-major conferences to squeak into bowl season, but the Mean Green's 9-3 ATS record is slightly better than the Runnin' Rebels 8-4 mark.

Playing in its home state, North Texas is a deserved favorite, but at 6.5 points the number is high. If that number hits over a touchdown by New Year’s, bettors may want to go with UNLV.

Washington State (Nine Years) vs. Colorado State (Four Years)

With Mike Leach restoring Washington State to respectability after a falling out at Texas Tech, the Cougars will be grabbing all of the headlines heading into Saturday's Advocare V100 Bowl. Washington State will be returning to a bowl game for the first time in nearly a decade.

Colorado State should not be ignored either, after ending its bowl drought after nearly half a decade - something that will give them bragging rights over rival Colorado, which continued its bowl drought this season.

The Rams will be in extremely tough against a Pac-12 team that has hung with some top-notch opponents and appears to be on the rise under Leach. Washington State is a 4.5-point favorite.

        Buffalo (Four Years)

The Buffalo Bulls will be ending their bowl streak in 2013 in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl when they take on San Diego State Saturday. Buffalo has star linebacker Khalil Mack, who will be a likely first-round pick, and hold a fourth-best turnover rate in the nation at +15.

San Diego State has an overtime win against Boise State on its resume, but has played teams close in 2013 with four overtime games - three of which were won by the Aztecs. Playing on the "Smurf Turf" in Boise at the Famous Idaho Bowl, the Aztecs will have the advantage of travel distance on their side, which could be why this line has moved from Buffalo -3.5 to SDSU -1.

NFL Top 4: Potential playoff spoilers to watch out for

When you’re at the bottom of the conference standings at this point in the NFL season, there are two options: 1. Tank your remaining games and hope for a high draft pick. Or 2. Play out the remaining schedule and hope you can screw over someone’s postseason plans.

These four teams could be siding with the latter in the final weeks of the season. They have matchups with teams in the playoff mix and have shown a fighting spirit, which can be enough to throw a wrench in their opponents’ postseason plotting:

Minnesota Vikings (4-9-1 SU, 8-6 ATS)

The Vikings have a taste for spoiling playoff pushes already, knocking off the Eagles this past weekend. Minnesota is fighting tooth and nail down the stretch, going 3-2-1 SU and 5-1 ATS in its last six games. Even without RBs Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart, the Vikes keep chugging along with third-stringer Matt Asiata and backup QB Matt Cassel leading the charge. Minnesota can mess up playoff pictures in both conference with games against Cincinnati (Vikings +7.5) and Detroit left on the table.

Buffalo Bills (5-9 SU, 7-7 ATS)

Buffalo has only two wins in its last seven games but is still coming to play each Sunday. The Bills took a win from a turned-around Jaguars squad Sunday and host the Wild Card-chasing Dolphins in the cold at Ralph Wilson (Bills +2.5) this weekend. After that, Buffalo could snuff out the Patriots' push for home field with a finale in Foxborough. Buffalo already has its franchise QB in E.J. Manuel, so tanking is less likely. And, in an example of the Bills’ commitment to the season, WR Stevie Johnson played Sunday despite the sudden death of his mother the day before.

Atlanta Falcons (4-10 SU, 5-9 ATS)

The Falcons are a prideful franchise and would love nothing more than to spoil the 49ers’ playoff chances after being edged by San Francisco in the NFC Championship Game last January. Atlanta visits the Bay Area as a 13-point underdog in the final Monday Night Football of the season. The Falcons held on for a win over Washington in Week 15 and are 2-2 SU and 3-1 ATS in the last four outings. Coach Mike Smith is still tinkering with his lineups each week, looking to improve one game to the next. After facing the Niners, Atlanta can trip up NFC South rival Carolina in Week 17.

St. Louis Rams (6-8 SU, 6-8 ATS)

The Rams proved they’re not a team to be taken lightly with a dominant performance against New Orleans. St. Louis held the Saints to three points through three quarters and exploded for 27 points of its own, without top WR Tavon Austin in the lineup. The Rams are 5.5-point favorites hosting Tampa Bay Sunday but their big game comes in Seattle in Week 17. Depending on if Seattle locks down home field for the playoffs, St. Louis could be treating this challenge as its Super Bowl. The Rams put a scare in the Seahawks, losing 14-9 but covering as 13-point home dogs in Week 8.

Florida vs. Memphis: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Gators vs. Memphis Tigers (+2.5, OFF)

Florida looks to build on its impressive win over Kansas when the 17th-ranked Gators face No. 14 Memphis on Tuesday in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. Memphis is averaging 84.8 points and has won six straight since losing at Oklahoma State, while Florida is holding opponents to 60.9 points per game and forced 24 turnovers in last Tuesday’s 67-61 win over Kansas. Both teams were projected as top-four seeds of the NCAA Tournament’s West Region in Joe Lunardi's latest edition of Bracketology at espn.com.

Florida has been dealing with a number of injuries and suspensions all season, but the Gators are slowly reaching full strength. Guards Scottie Wilbekin and Kasey Hill played together for the first time this season against Kansas, and Wilbekin was named SEC Player of the Week after scoring a career-high 18 points in the victory. Memphis boasts a quartet of talented guards, but Florida can’t overlook sophomore forward Shaq Goodwin, averaging 13.6 points and a team-high 6.5 rebounds.

                    ABOUT FLORIDA (7-2, 4-2 ATS):
Center Patric Young is averaging 10.4 and 5.6 rebounds, and the Gators’ frontcourt should be even stronger later this month when highly touted freshman forward Chris Walker (academics) joins the team. Virginia Tech transfer Dorian Finney-Smith continues to impress while leading the Gators in rebounding (8.2 rebounds per game), and senior forward Casey Prather averages a team-high 18.3 points. Prather has improved his offensive game this season by consistently getting to the foul line, where he’s made 50 of his 68 attempts.

                    ABOUT MEMPHIS (7-1, 4-2 ATS):
Coach Josh Pastner is looking for more from his four senior guards – Joe Jackson, Geron Johnson, Chris Crawford and Michael Dixon – after they struggled in a lackluster 73-59 win over Arkansas-Little Rock last Friday. “When they don't play well, our team is not going to be as good,” Pastner said. “We need those guys to be really good every single time on the floor. We're counting on those guys to be elite - not individually, but collectively.” Freshman forward Austin Nichols has started every game and averages 10.8 points and 5.5 rebounds.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Florida is 4-1 ATS in its last five games overall.
                    * Memphis is 5-1 ATS in its last six neutral site games.
                    * Under is 5-1 in Florida's last six non-conference games.
                    * Under is 4-0 in Memphis' last four games overall.

                    TIP-INS:

                    1. Florida has held six of its past eight opponents to 61 points or fewer.

Thunder at Nuggets: What bettors need to know

Oklahoma City Thunder at Denver Nuggets (+2.5, 207)

The Oklahoma City Thunder are streaking and look for their seventh consecutive victory when they visit the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday. Oklahoma City has won 14 of its past 15 games and the 19-4 start ties for second-best in franchise history, topped only by the 1993-94 Seattle SuperSonics’ 20-3 run. Denver has won 10 of its last 13 games and has also been victorious in seven of its last eight home games.

Oklahoma City posted a 115-113 home victory over the Nuggets on Nov. 18 in a contest that still frustrated Denver coach Brian Shaw. The Nuggets missed 18 free throws and allowed the Thunder to collect 19 rebounds. “To a team of that caliber, there’s no way you can do that and expect to come close to winning a game,” Shaw told reporters after Monday’s practice. “We made that evident to our guys.” Thunder forward Kevin Durant scored 38 points in that contest and running mate Russell Westbrook added 30.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (19-4, 13-10 ATS):
Durant was 11-of-18 shooting for 28 points in Sunday’s victory over Orlando but his high standards – and even loftier expectations – didn’t allow him to feel satisfied. “I’m one of those guys who wants to make every shot,” Durant said afterward. “I feel I can go back and watch and see the shots I missed and try to correct and look at my footwork and see how I can make those shots.” Durant has made over 60 percent of his shots in four of the last six games – shooting a torrid 58.7 during the stretch – and has scored below 20 points just three times in 23 games.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (14-9, 12-11 ATS):
Denver is five games above. 500 in the tough Western Conference but there are still a lot of people unsure how to measure the club. A four-game stretch that starts with the Thunder might provide some answers as the Nuggets follow by hosting the Phoenix Suns on Friday, visiting the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday and returning to host the Golden State Warriors on Monday. “It’s going to be a tough week,” power forward Kenneth Faried told reporters on Monday. “It should test us, test our team.”
