    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Most popular, least popular picks in the LVH Super Contest, where 1,034 contestants pick five games each week of the NFL season........they paid $1,500 each to be in this contest, by the way.

    2) Eagles 307 - L

    5) Jaguars 220 - L

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday.......

    14) Atlanta 27, Washington 26-- Redskins turned ball over seven times, but scored with 0:18 left and looked like game was headed to OT. For whatever reason, Shanahan went for two, the try failed and Redskins are 3-11. Cousins passed for 381 yards and three TDs, but five lost fumbles doomed the Skins.

    13) 49ers 33, Buccaneers 14-- Niners ran for 187 yards, had 18-yard edge in field position in an easy win. Red zone still an issue for 49ers; they kicked three FGs on four drives inside Tampa 20. If you own the 4-10 Bucs, do you fire Schiano or give him another year?

    12) Cardinals 37, Titans 34 OT-- Arizona led 34-17 with 3:20 left, turned Ryan Fitzpatrick into Dan Fouts for a half hour, botched an onside kick and found themselves in OT, where tey got an INT and won, despite being -3 in turnovers. Two weeks ago, they lost by FG in Philly despite +3 TO ratio.

    11) Rams 27, Saints 16-- Rams are +17 in turnovers in their six wins; they were +3 in this game, ran ball for 144 yards. Baffling why Saints just aren't nearly as good on road as they are in Superdome-- they were even lousy in dome road games, at Atlanta/St Louis.

    10) Seahawks 23, Giants 0-- At one point, Giants had four INTs and five first downs; they haven't scored in first half of last two games, will have first losing season since 2004. Seattle can clinch home field thru NFC playoffs by beating the Cardinals at home next week.

    9) Bears 38, Browns 31-- Cleveland scored two defensive TDs, still lost for fifth week in row, with last three losses by 4-1-7 points. Chicago also had a defensive score, is in first place if the Ravens upset Detroit tonight.

    8) Colts 25, Texans 3-- Hard to believe how dismal a season Houston has had; their last win was Sept 15, two days after the Astros' last win. Astros lost their last 15 games. At least the Rockets are pretty good. Right now the Colts would host Kansas City in a first round playoff game.

    7) Bills 27, Jaguars 20-- I've got nothing interesting on this game, so I'll rant about announcers calling players "winners", as if it is pre-ordained; for every winner, there has to be a loser, and I refuse to believe that some people are pre-ordained losers. Thats just how I feel.

    6) Dolphins 24, Patriots 20-- All seven Miami home games have been won by 4 or less points, so high drama for season ticket holders in south Florida and a superior coaching job by Joe Philbin. Patriots are an average team with an all-time great QB nearing the end of his career.

    5) Vikings 48, Eagles 30-- Respect your opponents; obviously Philly took this team lightly. Chip Kelly used to be coach at Oregon, Matt Cassel never started a game at USC- he passed for 370 yards in this game, as Minnesota jogged to a win with Adrian Peterson sitting out (foot).

    4) Panthers 30, Jets 20-- Carolina passed up an easy FG while up 16-6, and that is why they didn't cover; every once in while, Ron Rivera turns into Les Miles and does things that do not make sense- this was one of those. Jets are competitive when they hang onto the ball and they did in this game.

    3) Chiefs 56, Raiders 31-- Jamaal Charles scored 48 fantasy points in my league today; five TDs, 195 receiving yards. Chiefs led 35-10 with 5:42 left in second quarter- they clinched playoff spot with win, after going 2-14 LY. In all, 763 points were scored Sunday, the most ever in one day.

    2) Packers 37, Cowboys 36-- Epic collapse by Dallas, which led 26-3 at the half; keep in mind Matt Flynn was unemployed on Halloween, after he was cut by three different teams, just this season. Green Bay's first five drives in second half: 38 plays, 312 yards, five touchdowns. Oy.

    1) Steelers 30, Bengals 20-- Cincinnati could've moved up to #2 slot in the AFC with win here, so of course they were down 21-0 in first quarter to its rival that is basically playing out the string. Bengals need home field as much as anyone other than the Saints-- this was a damaging loss.

Inside the stats: Best trends and numbers for pre-New Year's bowls

For the longest time College Bowl games played before New Year’s Day were deemed minor bowls. Those played from January 1st out were the main or major bowl games.

That all changed when the Go Daddy’s and other lesser, lightweight bowl games were created to fill a need for cable television broadcasting rights.

Hence, none of the bowl games on the docket prior to New Year’s Day are considered of the heavyweight variety. Instead they are largely populated by two classes of teams: those who suffered disturbing late losses and fell out of major bowl consideration, and those who scraped and clawed and earned a bowl bid thanks to a strong second-half effort.

Let take a look this year’s pre-New Year’s Day bowl card shapes up. All stats are from the 2013 PLAYBOOK Bowl Stat Report.

      Conference Call

Like teams and coaches, conferences too develop bowl personalities.

Our database dug deep and found these noteworthy pre-New Year’s Day conference trends. All results are ATS dating back as far as 1980, unless noted otherwise.

ACC: 19-8 as dogs versus an opponent off a win (Miami Florida, Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech).

Big 10: 12-3-1 off back-to-back losses (Michigan and Minnesota).

Big 12: 2-8 as dogs versus .750 or greater opponent (Texas and Texas Tech)

CUSA: 10-3 as dog 7 or more off a win (Rice)

MAC: 1-7 off loss of 8 or more points (Buffalo and Northern Illinois)

MWC: 1-6 versus .800 or greater opponent (Utah State)

PAC 12: 1-11 favorite 6 or more points versus opponent off a loss (Arizona, Arizona State and Oregon)

SEC: 1-8 as a favorite of 8 or more points (Texas A&M)

      Second-Half Ups and Downs

The pre-New Year’s Day bowl team whose second half overall stats (from Game 7 out as opposed to the first six games of the season) improved the most was Middle Tennessee State, whose +108 net yards per game improvement tops the pack.

Nipping at the Blue Raiders’ beak were Colorado State and Rice, each showing +83 net stat YPG improvement over the 2nd half of the season.

The pre-New Year’s Day bowl team whose overall team stats regressed the most from Game 7 out was Miami Florida, who slipped a whopping -130 net YPG during the 2nd half of the campaign.

Other teams going backward dramatically after the midway point included Texas Tech (-105) and Oregon (-101).

      Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner

It’s important analyzing pre-New Year’s bowl contestants on a performance scale in games against teams that owned a winning record at the time of the meeting this season.

The best pre-New Year’s Day bowl teams from a straight up perspective this year were Fresno State (3-0) and Louisiana Lafayette (3-0).

On the opposite end of the SU ladder was Boise State (0-3).

When the money was on the line, this year’s pre-New Year’s Day best spread beater in games against winning opposition was Boston College (5-0).

And the only minor-bowl squad still looking for its first paycheck in games against a winning opponent this season is East Carolina (0-3).

      Tale Of The Tape

Another interesting slant is weighing teams and their performance in games against other fellow bowl teams this season.

The best pre-New Year’s Day bowl spread beater against other bowl foes was Bowling Green (4-0).

The biggest pre-New Year’s Day bowl spread money loser was Texas Tech (0-5), followed closely by Pittsburgh (1-7-1).

In games “In The Stats” (net overall yards versus opponent’s net overall yards), the biggest pre-New Year’s Day bowler Yards Per Game stat winners were: Cincinnati (+184), Bowling Green (+156) and Oregon (+111).

Pre-New Year’s Day bowlers that got trounced on the field, or the biggest Yards Per Game stat losers, were: Rutgers (-179), Buffalo (-171) and Ohio U (-166).

      Pushovers

Speaking of stat performance this season, two bowl teams head into the postseason having been pushed all over the field to conclude the 2013 campaign.

We’re speaking primarily of teams who have lost the overall yardage stats in at least their last three games.

This year’s contingent of pushovers includes Arizona and Texas A&M, both of whom are laying points, making them ‘leaking oil’ favorites. Amazingly enough the Wildcats have been out-yarded in each of their last four contests.

Incidentally, last year’s bowl card featured two teams - Duke and Kansas State - that were outgained in each of their final four games of the season. They went 0-2 SUATS, losing by 14 and 18 points, respectively.

      Are You Kidding Me

Notre Dame is 0-10 SU and ATS in bowl games when facing an opponent off a win.

NCAAF betting: Five teams poised for letdowns in bowl games

Every college bowl season comes with teams who are playing in games they never thought they would be in after heartbreaking losses. Those teams can often bring value as they can go into the game just wanting to get things over with while their opponents are eying up an upset.

Here is a look at five teams that will be less than excited with their bowl destinations this holiday season.

Northern Illinois (Lost MAC Championship to Bowling Green)

The Huskies had dreams of another return to the BCS with Heisman candidate Jordan Lynch registering eye-popping rushing numbers as a quarterback along the way before Bowling Green got their revenge on Northern Illinois in the MAC Championship Game in convincing fashion. Luckily for NIU, their opponent Utah State is also coming off a disappointing loss in the Mountain West Championship Game to Fresno State at home last weekend and will also be reeling.

Northern Illinois is getting -1.5 and Utah State lost to the two top quality programs in the Mountain West in Boise State and Fresno, with Lynch putting up such solid numbers and wanting to end his college career on a high note to attract NFL attention, the Huskies are likely not the team to find value when it comes to a lack of motivation following a letdown.

USC (Lost to UCLA to end season)

USC has been a mess all season and are going through the emotional roller coaster of their interim coach Ed Orgeron being replaced by Steve Sarkisian for next season as the Trojans opted to bring in an established head coach following USC's loss to their rivals in UCLA to end their Pac 12 season. Going up against Derek Carr and the Fresno State Bulldogs, a team that has top wide receiver talent and a dominant passing game, the Trojans could be looking at an upset going against the nation's best passer in Carr.

USC are currently sitting as 6-point favorites over Fresno State.

Oregon (Lost to Stanford/Arizona to lose Pac 12 title)

The Ducks were pegged as the team that was going to face Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game backed by the early Heisman favorite in redshirt-sophomore Marcus Mariota before an MCL sprain slowed Mariota and Oregon's offense in losses to Stanford and Arizona to dash their Pac 12 title hopes. The Ducks will now have to settle for a game against Texas to end their season, but they might not mind facing the Longhorns who struggled mightily against a similar offensive scheme in Baylor to end their season. They are two touchdown favorites, but Texas showed that they struggled to match the pace of a high speed offense. Oregon could very well run up the score against the Longhorns who have more than their share of distractions with the current Mack Brown/Nick Saban rumors that ended with Saban extending his contract at Alabama.

Georgia (Lost Aaron Murray to season ending ACL injury)

Georgia hasn't been the same since losing Aaron Murray in what was the final blow of an injury-plagued season for the Bulldogs. They will be playing a Nebraska team that is also missing their starter in Taylor Martinez. But as 9-point favorites without the quarterback who has been the staple of their program for years, Georgia may be in line for an upset against the Cornhuskers.

Miami Hurricanes (Missed ACC Championship Game with three-game losing streak)

Miami expected to win the ACC Coastal to avenge a loss to Florida State in the ACC Championship Game, but instead were shocked by an upstart Duke in the final loss of a three-game losing streak that dashed any dreams of the Hurricanes returning to a BCS bowl. Losing Duke Johnson at running back, Miami has just not been the same team and will be in tough against the 11-1 Louisville Cardinals and likely first overall draft pick Teddy Bridgewater. The Hurricanes run on swagger, and they haven't had much of it since their losing streak.

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Monday, December 16

Quick turnaround for 2-9 Oakland squad that lost 67-63 to Michigan St Saturday, albeit a depleted Spartan squad; they led State by one at half. Oakland's program must make lot of $$; they've played hardest schedule in country up til now. Inexperienced Illinois State hasn't played in nine days, is 3-1 vs teams ranked outside top 100, losing to Vermont by 11.

Cleveland State lost three of last four games, losing at Kentucky by 7, in triple OT to Drexel; Vikings are 3-1 at home, with only loss to Akron by 12- they're turning ball over 19.8% of time. Western Carolina is 3-6 vs D-I teams, 0-5 vs teams in top 200, with four losses by 13+-- this is the first game in nine days for Vikings, first game in 12 days for Western.

First game in nine days for Delaware squad that lost at Notre Dame by 5; Blue Hens are 0-3 vs top 100 teams, with losses by total of 11 points. North Dakota State won at Notre Dame last week, then lost at Ohio St by 17 Saturday; Bison are 1-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 13-1-17- they are shooting 56.1% inside arc (#15 in US), but 30.7% outside arc (#269).

Cal-Riverside beat Northern Colorado 69-63 LY, holding on for dear life after leading 46-18 with 13:18 left; Highlanders lost last three D-I games this month by 1-3-10 points; they shoot 25.5% from arc (11th-worst in US), 61% from foul line (15th-worst). Northern is 1-2 vs teams ranked in top 150, with all three games decided by 7 or less points- they won by a hoop at Kansas State in their season opener.

Pucking the trends: NHL's weekly betting news and notes
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

For the week of Dec. 8 to 14.

            Hot team

            Vancouver Canucks (4-0 SU)

Some are calling it the 'Tortorella affect', but whatever it is, the Canucks are the NHL's hottest team. They have won seven games in a row and now just sit four points out of first in the Pacific Division. A big reason for that has been the recent play of goalie Roberto Luongo. He has won his last six starts, while only allowing one goal per game during that streak. After a nice five-game home stand, the Canucks head out for a three-game road trip, with stops in Minnesota, Dallas and a huge matchup with Chicago. They finish off the week at home versus Winnipeg.

            Cold team

            New York Rangers (0-3 SU)

The hottest team is Tort's new team and the coldest team is Tort's old team. The Rangers have lost four games in a row, all at home, and seven of their last 10 as they head into Sunday night's tilt with the Calgary Flames. The Rangers are in the midst of a nine-game home stand that has gotten off to a horrible start. They've only scored more than two goals once so far during their current losing streak and have dropped all the way to second-to-last in the Metropolitan Division. The teams who are next up for the Rangers during their extended stay at Madison Square Garden are Calgary, Pittsburgh and the N.Y. Islanders.

            Best Over play

            Chicago Blackhawks (4-0 O/U)

Lately, the Blackhawks have been lighting the lamp like it's going out of style. The 'Hawks have had a perfect week handling the total and have actually gone over the total seven times in the past eight games overall, averaging 5.5 goals per game in that time. Patrick Kane is leading the way for the high-flying 'Hawks with 19 goals on the season and Duncan Keith has recorded 27 assists from the back end. After the Blackhawks play the L.A. Kings Sunday, they only play two games next week as they are on the road at Nashville and host red-hot Vancouver.

            Best Under play

            Buffalo Sabres (0-3 O/U)

It has been just a dismal season in Buffalo for the Sabres, who seem to have issues that go all the way to the front office. They are the lowest scoring team in the NHL and haven't scored more than two goals in agame in their past six contests. They also haven't hit the Over since back on Nov. 16. in a 4-2 loss versus Toronto, going 0-7-4 O/U in that time. The leading scorer for the Sabres this season is Cody Hodgson, who has only tallied 18 points. This week the Sabres host the Winnipeg Jets before a home-and-home series with the Boston Bruins.

            Surveying the Schedule:

The Anaheim Ducks have been terrific at home so far this season, compiling a 12-0-2 record at the Honda Center. But this week will be a tougher test for the Ducks as they embark on a East Coast road trip which sees them play four games in a seven day span. The trip includes stop in Detroit, New Jersey, at the N.Y. Islanders and finishing off in Washington.

Maple Leafs at Penguins: What bettors need to know
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at Pittsburgh Penguins (-191, 5.5)

The Toronto Maple Leafs proved, at least for one night, that they can hang with the best the NHL has to offer. They'll look to duplicate that feat Monday night as they visit Sidney Crosby and the surging Pittsburgh Penguins. The Maple Leafs put it altogether on Saturday as they walloped the defending-champion Chicago Blackhawks 7-3, and now have the benefit of facing a Penguins team that could be without superstar forward Evgeni Malkin.

Pittsburgh comes in riding a three-game winning streak, but could be in tough to extend that run if Malkin misses the contest. The NHL assists leader suffered a leg injury in the third period of Saturday night's 4-1 triumph over the Detroit Red Wings - a game in which he finished with a goal and two assists. Fortunately for the Penguins, they still have Crosby to lean on; he scored twice against Detroit and is on a six-game point streak.

            LINE:
Pittsburgh opened at -185 and has been bet up as high as -200. The total opened 5.5.

            TV:
7 p.m. ET, NHLN, RDS, SNET-O (Toronto), ROOT (Pittsburgh)

            ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (17-14-3, 17-16 O/U):
Toronto made waves in the offseason - and not necessarily good ones - by signing former New Jersey Devils tough guy David Clarkson to a seven-year deal worth a whopping $36.5 million. While the Maple Leafs aren't even halfway through the first year of that contract, it looks like an albatross. The undrafted 29-year-old has been an offensive black hole - recording just two goals and four assists through the first 23 games - and is presently serving a two-game ban, bringing his number of games suspended on the season to 12.

            ABOUT THE PENGUINS (23-10-1, 12-18 O/U):
With Pittsburgh already among the league leaders with 146 man-games lost to injury this season, having Malkin on the shelf for any length of time will be a problem. Add in the fact that the league is playing a condensed schedule due to the Olympics in February, and the Penguins have found it difficult to strike the proper balance between practice and recovery time. "I don't know if it's (only) our team, but I feel like injuries and maintenance (days) are at a high level," coach Dan Bylsma told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

            TRENDS:

            * Over is 8-1 in the last nine meetings in Pittsburgh.
            * Over is 20-7-1 in the last 28 meetings.
            * Home team is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.
            * Maple Leafs are 1-4 in the last five meetings in Pittsburgh.

            OVERTIME:

            1. Toronto has won just one of its last five trips to Pittsburgh.

            2. Crosby has 19 goals and 23 assists in 27 career games versus the Maple Leafs.

            3. Clarkson won't play against the Penguins but is eligible to return Tuesday night versus Florida.

              NBA

              Monday, December 16

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bank shots: NBA's weekly betting news and notes
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best - and worst - basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Dec. 8 to 14.

Hottest ATS - Oklahoma City Thunder (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS)

The Thunder have won five games in a row going into Sunday's action, covering the spread easily in all five contests, including a 118-94 manhandling of the Eastern Conference leading Indiana Pacers. Kevin Durant has been his typical awesome self during the Thunder's current win streak, scoring 28.8 points and grabbing 8.4 rebounds per game in that span. The Thunder start off the week versus Orlando, then head to Denver, are back home against the spiraling downwards Chicago Bulls, all before a matchup of Western Conference elites in San Antonio.

Coldest ATS - Chicago Bulls (1-3 SU, 0-4 ATS)

Speaking of the devil, here sit the Bulls, who seem to be lost this season without Derrick Rose. Not having Rose in the lineup is nothing new for Chicago, but something is different since their star point guard went down this year. They have won only three of their last 10 games, going 2-8 ATS in that stretch, which includes losses to Utah, Cleveland, Milwaukee and Toronto. They have only averaged 79 points per game in their last five contests. This week the Bulls host Orlando, Houston and Oklahoma City on the road and Cleveland back at home.

Best Over play - Detroit Pistons (1-3 SU, 4-0 O/U)

The Pistons, who were last week's hottest team ATS cooled down a bit last week after matchups with Miami and Minnesota and a tough overtime loss at New Orleans. However, the Pistons hit the Over in every game last week and have gone over the total in eight of the past nine games. The Piston's offense has been improving of late, scoring at least 92 points in their past nine games thanks to a balanced attack. All five starters are averaging at least 13 points per game this season. The Pistons have a tough upcoming week with matchups against Portland, Indiana and Houston.

Best Under play - Boston Celtics (2-2 SU, 1-3 O/U)

The Celtics haven't quite figured out this whole 'tanking' thing yet. That is partly due to the fact that the Atlantic Division is one of the worst divisions in recent memory. The Celtics still lead the division with an 11-14 record, but have been a solid Under play all season thanks to their combination of mediocre offense and good defense. They are now a ranked fifth in points against per game at 95.7 while only scoring 94.8 points per game themselves. Boston has a little three game home stand this week, welcoming Minnesota, Detroit and Washington to town.

              Surveying the Schedule:

The San Antonio Spurs are on another winning streak. Their current one is at four games, but they will have a tough road ahead if they want to keep the streak going. They are in the midst of a four game road trip with stops remaining against the high-flying L.A. Clippers, the always tough Phoenix Suns and the electric Golden State Warriors. All this before a showdown of two the West's elite teams when the Oklahoma City Thunder come to town next Saturday night.

Spurs at Clippers: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Clippers (+2, 202)

The Los Angeles Clippers play at home on Monday for the first time in 15 days - but the sight of the San Antonio Spurs isn’t exactly the best welcome-home gift. San Antonio swept the Clippers out of last season’s playoffs in the second round and has won four consecutive games as it enters this season’s first meeting between the clubs. Los Angeles went 4-3 on a seven-game road trip and has won eight of 10 at home.

The Spurs have been one of the best teams in the NBA over the first quarter of the season and the Clippers are anxious to see where they rank. “It’s a test, a good test,” forward Blake Griffin said after the final game of the road trip. “To be away for a long period of time and come home and play a top-notch team – a team that always executes and plays the right way – so that’s why I think it will be a good test for us.” Future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan has been sensational for San Antonio, which is 10-2 on the road.

              LINE:
Los Angeles opened +2 and has moved as high as +2.5. The total opened at 201 and has moved to 202.5 at some markets.

              TV:
10:30 p.m. ET, KENS (San Antonio), Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)

              POWER RANKINGS:
              Spurs (-13.5) - Clippers (-12.0) + Home Court (-3.0) = Clippers -1.5

ABOUT THE SPURS (19-4, 12-11 ATS):
Duncan has recorded three consecutive double-doubles and four in a six-game span after starting the season slowly. He is averaging 17 points and 12.7 rebounds during the stretch, which began with an epic 23-point, 21-rebound outing against Atlanta on Dec. 2. “The first 20 games, it’s not really that hard to do much better,” Duncan said after producing 22 points and 12 boards in Saturday’s victory over the Utah Jazz. “I’m still not shooting the ball well but I’m trying to play hard and find ways to contribute.”

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (16-9, 14-11 ATS):
Point guard Chris Paul is coming off a 38-point, 12-assist explosion in Saturday’s victory over the Washington Wizards and will attempt to carry over the success against the Spurs. Paul struggled against San Antonio last season, averaging just 11.8 points on 43.2 percent shooting. Los Angeles is also hoping Griffin - who averaged 18.3 points and 9.3 rebounds against the Spurs last season - can shake a funk that has seen him reach 20 points just once over the last six games.

              TRENDS:

              * Under is 20-5-1 in the last 26 meetings in Los Angeles.
              * Spurs are 11-4 ATS in the last 15 meetings in Los Angeles.
              * Spurs are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings.
              * Underdog is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.

              BUZZER BEATERS:

              1. The teams split four regular-season meetings last season before the Spurs swept the playoff series.

              2. Clippers G Jamal Crawford had 17 points against Washington in his first start since the 2011-12 season.

              3. San Antonio C Tiago Splitter (calf) may return after a four-game absence.
