Arizona at Michigan: What bettors need to know

Arizona Wildcats at Michigan Wolverines (-1.5)

Arizona didn’t miss a beat in its first game at No. 1 and the level of competition gets raised a few notches when it visits No. 25 Michigan on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats hammered New Mexico State 74-48 on Wednesday, but they face a Michigan team that has won 20 straight games at home against non-conference opponents and had a week to prepare for them. The key battle could be inside between Arizona’s 6-9 freshman Aaron Gordon and 6-10 sophomore Mitch McGary of Michigan.

The Wolverines followed up a loss at Duke by beating Houston Baptist by 54 last Saturday, recording a season-high 26 assists in the process. Michigan’s only two upperclassmen play up front and Arizona is young in the backcourt as well, except for their leading scorer, junior Nick Johnson. Michigan is averaging more than 80 points and the Wildcats have held six of 10 opponents under 60, beating San Diego State 69-60 in their only true road game.

ABOUT ARIZONA (10-0): The Wildcats have dominated inside, boasting a plus-14.3 rebounding margin and 29 more blocks than their opponents while shooting 50.2 percent from the field and allowing 36.4 percent by the opposition. Johnson averages 15.7 points and shoots 50 percent from the field and 6-8 forward Brandon Ashley is contributing 12.3 points and making 61 percent for his shots. Gordon, one of the most heralded first-year players in the country, has scored in double figures each of the last eight games with four double-doubles.

ABOUT MICHIGAN (6-3): The Wolverines will have to continue their production from behind the 3-point line, where they have averaged 9.44 made 3s per contest on 38.6 percent shooting. McGary, who struggled with a back injury earlier this season, is averaging 10.6 points and 10.4 rebounds over the last five contests and matched a career high with six assists against Houston Baptist. The Los Angeles Lakers are still looking for their first win with Kobe Bryant back in the lineup, and they'll try to get it on the road against the Charlotte Bobcats on Saturday. The Lakers are 0-3 since Bryant's return from a torn Achilles - their first three-game losing streak of the season - and were never competitive in Friday's 122-97 loss at Oklahoma City. The Bobcats have dropped two straight and are looking to avoid their first three-game skid of the season.

Charlotte returns home after pushing Indiana to the brink of its first home loss in a 99-94 defeat Friday, an impressive showing against the team with the NBA's best record. "We had them where we wanted them," Bobcats center Al Jefferson told reporters. "We played a heck of a game. We had a chance there at the end to be exactly where we wanted to against a good team."

ABOUT THE LAKERS (10-12): Bryant's return couldn't come soon enough for the Lakers, and he's had to take over at the point out of necessity with Steve Nash, Jordan Farmar and Steve Blake all sidelined. He played the part against the Thunder with 13 assists but scored only four points and committed seven turnovers. "There's no secret formula you can sprinkle out there," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni told reporters. "(Bryant) will get more comfortable, then the guys will get more comfortable around him and then he'll do a better job."

ABOUT THE BOBCATS (10-13): Charlotte has been shorthanded in the post with forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist out with a broken hand but it got reserve center Bismack Biyombo (ankle) back against the Pacers. The Bobcats have struggled to defend the post but they're getting great offensive production in the paint from Jefferson (15.5 points, 9.2 rebounds). Point guard Kemba Walker leads the team in scoring at 16.8 points but managed only four points in the second half against Indiana.

Martin Jones has not been perfect in his brief NHL career, but he's been close enough and is a big reason why the surging Los Angeles Kings carry a five-game winning streak into Saturday's game against the host Ottawa Senators. Jones has won his first four starts - two by shutout - and is coming off a 38-save performance in a 3-1 victory at Toronto on Wednesday. "I try not to think about that too much," Jones said. "It's not like I'm getting called upon to steal games here."

Ottawa's Craig Anderson has struggled to regain his form from last season, when he led the league in save percentage (.941) and goals-against average (1.69). He took a big step in that direction by matching his season high with 40 saves in Thursday's 2-1 win over Buffalo, giving him back-to-back victories for the first time since Oct 17 and Oct. 23. "Our goaltender obviously made a conscious decision that he was going to be competitive and gave us a chance to win," Senators coach Paul MacLean said.

ABOUT THE KINGS (21-7-4): Los Angeles, which is making the third stop on a four-game road trip, is 12-1-4 in its last 17 games - the majority coming since starting netminder Jonathan Quick was injured. Ben Scrivens went 6-1-3 after Quick was hurt before Jones continued the sensational play in net for the Kings, who haven't allowed more than two goals in 17 straight games. "Defense is always first on our minds," defenseman Drew Doughty said. "We're the hardest-working team defensively, and that's why we don't give up much."

ABOUT THE SENATORS (13-14-6): Defenseman Cody Ceci, a first-round draft pick in 2012 and an Ottawa native, acquitted himself well in his NHL debut, registering a plus-2 rating and seeing more than 20 minutes of ice time against the Sabres.
