    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

NFL trends to ponder, with Week 15 approaching.......

-- Chargers are 5-1-1 in last seven games as a road underdog.

-- Raiders covered 14 of last 19 as a divisional underdog.

-- Eagles covered three of last ten as a road favorite.

-- Jets covered twice in last eight away games.

-- Green Bay covered once in its last seven road games.

-- Washington covered once in its last seven road games.

    *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13........

    32) Texans—Hard to believe they haven’t won a game since Week 2, especially with double digit halftime leads at home vs Colts/Patriots. New coach inherits some talent, but who will the QB be?

    31) Redskins—New coach will be Daniel Snyder’s 8th in 15 years; he will inherit a mess.

    30) Bills—Always wonder how many Super Bowls they would’ve won if they had beaten the Giants in Tampa that year. Seems like an awful long time ago now, which it actually was. I had a lot of curly hair back then.

    29) Raiders—Whats up with Terrelle Pryor? He was on the bench, then he was in the game Sunday, then he wasn’t; he isn’t a better prospect than the McGloin kid? Oy.

    28) Browns—Before he retires, all of Jason Campbell’s bad luck in his career is going to reverse itself and he’s going to have one huge year, win the MVP and get to the Super Bowl. I am seriously predicting this.

    8) Cardinals—They’ve scored a defensive TD in each of their last three home games. Has a guy ever been Coach of the Year two years in a row, for two different teams? Bruce Arians has had a terrific 15 months.

    7) 49ers—Frank Gore has torn an ACL in both knees, but he’s come back and really had an excellent career. Hope he sends his surgeon and the 49ers’ trainer a nice gift every Christmas.

    6) Patriots—I’ve lost track of Tom Brady’s salary, but he is underpaid, no matter what he makes. The team they’ve put around him is very ordinary.

    5) Chiefs—They won two games LY and are 10-3 now, but they’re not going to win their division. Superior coaching job by Andy Reid.

T3) Saints—Wonder who would’ve gotten the Alabama job had Nick Saban chosen Drew Brees to be his QB with the Dolphins, because he’d still be in Miami. Rumors are floating about Saban going to Detroit next year.

T3) Panthers—Won eight of last nine games; we’ll see what they learned Sunday night when they get the Saints in Charlotte next week.

    2) Seahawks—Great point by Troy Aikman or someone on TV last week, about how some QBs run to run/gain yards, but Russell Wilson runs to find an open receiver. Lucky for Pete Carroll, Wilson hit .220 in the low minor leagues, or else he might be the 2B in Colorado by now.

    1) Broncos—Who would win if Denver played New England and Brady, Manning both sat out? Brock Osweiler vs Ryan Mallett. Mallett was the much better college player, but Denver went 8-8 with Tebow at QB two years ago, so I’m saying the Broncos.

Where the action is: Early NCAAF bowl line moves

      Sheraton Hawaii Bowl

Boise State Broncos vs. Oregon State Beavers – Open: +2.5, Move: Pick, Move: -3

The Broncos, usually bowl season darlings, aren’t getting the usual love from football bettors. Early sharp money kick started the initial move from OSU +2.5 to pick’em and the public followed suit, betting the Beavers and flipping this spread on its ear.

“All this was on Monday when we first opened up our Bowl numbers,” Stewart says of the line movement. “After more money kept showing on Oregon State, just this morning we went to Oregon State -3 (-105) / Boise State +3 (-115). That is a very significant move and just after two days of action, going nearly four points off the opener, which pretty much tells you we opened with a bad number.”

      Capital One Bowl

Wisconsin Badgers vs. South Carolina Gamecocks – Open: Wisconsin -2, Move: Pick

Bettors are known for siding with the SEC during bowl season, and the Capital One Bowl is no different. Books opened the Badgers as 2-point chalk but early action from wiseguys has bullied this spread all the way to a pick’em.

“We skipped going to -1 and went straight to a pick, which is our current number,” says Stewart. “While we’ve started to see some money on Wisconsin, we’re still seeing South Carolina money. I’m not sure when we’ll get there, but I have a feeling at some point over this weekend we will make South Carolina the favorite in this game.”

      Chick-Fil-A Bowl

Texas A&M Aggies vs. Duke Blue Devils - Open: +13, Move: +12.5

Action started out balanced on this New Year’s Eve bowl but sharps came in on Duke Tuesday morning, trimming the line half a point. Since that adjustment, it’s been nothing but Aggies action and a move back to the original number may happen before the end of the week.

“We knew our opener of -13 was a bit high and understood the sharp money taking the points here, but at some point we might be going back to 13 to stem the early exposure that we seeing on Texas A&M at -12.5,” says Stewart. “Being that this is Johnny Manziel’s last college football game, we know the public is going to be all over A&M and we’ll be shading high on this game in anticipation of all that public money.”

      Rose Bowl

Michigan State Spartans vs. Stanford Cardinal – Open: -3, Move: -4.5

It seems wiseguys aren’t impressed with Michigan State’s victory against an overrated Ohio State side in the Big Ten title game. Instant action came in Stanford from the sharps, moving this spread as many as 1.5 points before bettors decided MSU was worth the wager.

“We felt that after watching Michigan State upset Ohio State in impressive fashion, that we’d definitely book some money on what we perceived to being a live dog,” says Stewart. “That just wasn’t the case, until we got to the number +4.5 and that’s where we’re starting to see some Michigan State money show.”

Four best non-BCS bowls to watch and wager

Just like a kid waiting for Christmas morning, college football bettors are counting down the minutes until New Year’s Day, when the BCS bowls kick off.

While you wait it out for the big boys to clash, don’t put blinders on to the rest of bowl season. Here are four great non-BCS bowls to watch and wager on this holiday season:

Holiday Bowl: Arizona State Sun Devils vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders (+13.5)

Don’t let that near two-touchdown spread fool you. This could be one of the most entertaining bowl games – BCS or not – this entire bowl season.

The Red Raiders have the offensive weaponry to keep pace with ASU, averaging 35.7 points per game and airing it out for the second most yards in the country (392 yards per game). The Sun Devils come in deflated after a loss at home in the Pac-12 title game and could be walking into a shootout on Dec. 30.

Advocare V100 Bowl: Arizona Wildcats vs. Boston College (+7.5)

This New Year’s Eve bowl game will turn into a track meet between two of the most dynamic running backs in college football.

Boston College stud rusher and Heisman finalist Andre Williams – the nation’s top runner (2,102 yards) – takes on Arizona RB Ka'Deem Carey, who ranked fifth in the country with 1,720 yards on the ground. Many in the Tucson area believe Carey was snubbed by the Heisman folks and that the Wildcats will use the bowl stage to showcase their star player. Could be value in the Under with both teams looking to tear up the turf.

Chick-Fil-A Bowl: Duke Blue Devils vs. Texas A&M Aggies (-11.5)

There are a couple reasons why this spread sits at a brow-furrowing 11.5 points. The Blue Devils are one of the surprise teams this season, going 10-3 SU and ATS. While Duke did get rolled by Florida State in the ACC title game, you can’t discount the Blue Devils for losing to a team that’s favored by almost nine points in the BCS Championship.

And the other reason is actually more of a question: Where is Johnny Manziel’s head going to be in his final college game? The former Heisman winner will likely jump to the pros after this New Year’s Eve performance. Will he go all out to boost his draft stock or get caught looking past Duke after a disappointing season?

Capital One Bowl: South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Wisconsin Badgers (+1)

The nation’s most destructive defensive force – Gamecocks DL Jadeveon Clowney – runs into one of the most rock-solid offensive lines, with South Carolina and Wisconsin clashing at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando.

Clowney is another pro-ready talent likely making the leap to Sundays, but his stock took a knock this week when he was flagged for speeding – going 110 mph in a 70 zone. The Badgers consistently have one of the better offensive lines in the land. Wisconsin allowed only 15 sacks for a total of just 87 yards lost and averaged only five tackles for a loss allowed per game on the season. It’s a classic “unstoppable force meets immovable object” showdown.

NBA TNT doubleheader: Clippers at Nets, Rockets at Blazers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Brooklyn Nets (+2.5, 195.5)

The Brooklyn Nets seek their first three-game winning streak of the season when they host the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday in what could be another emotional night for forwards Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. The veteran stars will be opposite Clippers head coach Doc Rivers, who guided them to the 2008 NBA title during a solid run with the Boston Celtics that ended this offseason. Pierce and Garnett already got through one emotional affair Tuesday, when they topped the Celtics in the first meeting with their former team.

Rivers' current crew is coming off a 96-88 win in Boston on Wednesday in his return to TD Garden, where fans gave him a rousing ovation. The victory gave the Clippers a 3-2 mark on their season high-tying seven-game road trip, during which they have held four opponents to 88 points or fewer. Blake Griffin scored 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in Los Angeles' 110-103 victory over Brooklyn at home on Nov. 16.

          TV:
          8 p.m. ET, TNT

          ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (15-8):
Wednesday's win featured another standout performance from Jamal Crawford, who scored 21 points in 27 minutes, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the closing minutes. Crawford has always been a quality scorer, but has stepped up his offensive game in the wake of the injury to fellow shooting guard J.J. Redick. Including the game at Sacramento on Nov. 29 in which Redick hurt his right hand, Crawford is averaging 18.1 points off the bench.

          ABOUT THE NETS (7-14):
Brooklyn has won three of five games after a 4-12 start. That may not mean much in the grand scheme of things, but if star guard Deron Williams can remain healthy there should be better days ahead. Williams returned from a nine-game layoff Tuesday against the Celtics and instantly provided a boost, scoring a game-high 25 points as the Nets topped the century mark for the first time in seven games.

          TRENDS:

          * Over is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings.
          * Underdog is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
          * Nets are 1-6 ATS in their last seven home games.
          * Under is 4-0 in Clippers last four overall.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Clippers F Antawn Jamison scored his 20,000th point Wednesday.

          2. Brooklyn played without Pierce, Garnett, Williams and leading scorer C Brook Lopez in the loss at Los Angeles last month.

          3. The Clippers' seven-game trip ends in Washington on Saturday, after which the team will fly home to complete a 6,103-mile excursion.

Houston Rockets at Portland Trail Blazers (-3.5, 211.5)

The Portland Trail Blazers and the Houston Rockets are following a similar formula to the top of the Western Conference with strong inside-outside combinations and rapid ball movement leading to 3-pointers. The Trail Blazers will attempt to prove they run it better when they host the Rockets on Thursday. Portland holds the top record in the West and is second in the NBA in scoring, behind only Houston.

The Rockets are winners of two straight thanks to an improved effort on the defensive end and the continued acclimation of Dwight Howard to Houston’s high screen-and-roll offense. That high screen system between James Harden and Howard should look familiar to the Trail Blazers, who run plenty of the same with Damian Lillard and LaMarcus Aldridge. Portland did not respond well to that scheme in the first meeting, a 116-101 home loss on Nov. 5.

          TV:
          10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

          ABOUT THE ROCKETS (15-7):
Houston is in the bottom half of the league in scoring defense but is making its way up by holding its last two opponents to an average of 85.5 points. “I think we have a better mindset and we are more comfortable and executing to the scouting report very well,” forward Chandler Parsons said of the last two games. “I think out problem is we haven’t fully grasped that we can lose to any team on any given night.” That should not be a problem against the Blazers if the first meeting was any indication. Harden led the way with 33 points in that one as Rockets shot 54.7 percent from the field.

          ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (18-4):
Portland had a four-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday but bounced right back with a win at Utah and is making a brief stop at home before heading out on a four-game road trip. Aldridge was named the Western Conference Player of the Week for last week after posting four straight double-doubles and even began to hear “MVP” chants in Utah on Monday. “It was a blessing and definitely something I feel I’ve worked hard for,” Aldridge told the team’s official website. “I’ve never heard MVP chants on the road, that was definitely new for me.”

          TRENDS:

          * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
          * Rockets are 5-0-1 ATS in the last six meetings in Portland.
          * Trail Blazers are 5-0 ATS in their last five Thursday games.
          * Underdog is 7-2-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Houston has taken three straight in the series and has won five of its last six in Portland.

          2. Rockets G Jeremy Lin (knee) is expected to make his return from a six-game absence on Thursday.

          3. Howard has pulled down 18 or more rebounds in each of the last three games to boost his average to 13.3 boards.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Parlay kings: Are the Blazers the best parlay lock in the NBA
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boasting an impressive nucleus of young talent that is finally healthy for a change (don't tell Brandon Roy or Greg Oden), the Portland Trail Blazers are the best ATS team in the NBA through a quarter of the season at 22 games. With a 16-6 ATS record, the Blazers are also the best team in regards to the Over, hitting over the total 15 times this season.

This makes the Blazers the NBA's best team to add to your parlays this season, shocking considering the Blazers struggles in 2012-13.

Today we look at why the Blazers have been so good this season and if their value will stay true into the future.

                      Hot shooting

Naturally, if you are a team that is hitting the Over you are likely among the best in the Association in FG percentage, FT percentage, 3PT percentage and points per game. The Blazers are in the Top 10 of all of those categories, ranking second in PPG (106.2) ninth in FG percentage (45.8), second in 3PT percentage (41.5) and first in FT percentage (81.7).

The Blazers have efficient players in LaMarcus Aldridge, Damian Lillard, Wesley Matthews and Nicolas Batum who can all score when needed so it is no surprise that they are filling the baskets at will so far this season, but shooting that good will eventually cool down at some point if it is only a trend.

                      Not slowing down

Portland has still been going Over the past ten games, losing just three times against the spread and going under just twice. With the lines adjusting to the Blazers' hot start, it is promising that they have continued to keep winning wagers over their past ten games.

Portland has been equally as hot in terms of wins and losses, losing just twice SU over that ten game span.

If a cool down period is expected, it could be awhile based on their 10 game record.

                      Good hosts, better guests

Portland has done it both at home and on the road in terms of ATS wins, but they are even better when they are away from the venue Formerly Known as the Rose Garden.

Their 7-4 home record is topped by their 9-2 record on the road, they make up for it by playing the Over better at home with their friendly rims going 8-3 with the totals at home and 7-4 on the road. Once again that is quality value you won't find elsewhere in the NBA.

                      Will it last?

The next ten games will likely show how legit the Blazers are both in the Western Conference and at the sportsbook.

Their first quarter value has been outstanding, but at the same time the linesmakers will be taking this into consideration each time they handicap Portland. That goes the same for their Western Conference opponents, who will be doing their best to test the surprising 18-4 Blazers who now think they are contenders in the tough West pack.

Only time will tell, but for now you can't go wrong throwing the Blazers on your NBA parlays for the time being. ATS or with the Over, they have been money so far.

Where the action is: Public loving Clippers, Blazers

The second of TNT's Thursday night doubleheader is a matchup of two of the best in the west as the Portland Trail Blazers host the Houston Rockets. The first game has the Los Angeles Clippers visiting the Brooklyn Nets.

We talk to Brad Kennedy, an oddsmaker with TopBet.eu, about the action coming in on both of Thursday's games.

Los Angeles Clippers at Brooklyn Nets - Open: +3, Move: +2, Move: +2.5

Break up the Nets! The lowly Brooklyn Nets have posted back-to-back wins for the first time this season and will look to make it three with Lob City in town.

The Clippers and head coach Doc Rivers will be flying high after Wednesday's win in Boston - Rivers' old stomping ground.

With Brooklyn as one of the worst teams in the league ATS (8-13), public money is coming in heavy on the road faves.

"Though it’s early, we’ve already seen a lot of action on this one, and an overwhelming 95 percent of the public money is with the Clippers against the spread," Kennedy told Covers.

Houston Rockets at Portland Trail Blazers - Open: -3.5, Move: -3

In what should prove to be a wildly entertaining basketball game, bettors like the Blazers to improve their joint-best (tied with the Indiana Pacers) 16-6 ATS record.

"Not unlike the early game, 95 percent of the public money is with Portland ATS," Kennedy says. "They opened as 3.5 point faves and the spread currently sits at three points."

TopBet also has a head-to-head free bet for the game to make things interesting.

"Bettors have to pick the player to score the most points on Thursday night, and tonight the two favorites - James Harden (-200) and LaMarcus Alridge (-150) - are going head to head in Portland."
