NCAAF line watch: Wait to fade Manziel and Texas A&M

      Spread to bet now

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (+15.5) vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The spread sits on a dead number, but we’d expect this line to go down closer to the key number of 14 before it would go up to the key number of 17.

Notre Dame is going from playing in the National Championship game against Alabama last season to playing a 6-6 SU Rutgers team in the Pinstripe Bowl on December 28th.

Not only that, but this game will also be played in the Bronx giving Rutgers the proximity edge as well.

This game will be the proverbial “square vs. sharp” play where the public bettors will lay the points while the professional bettors will take the points. Take the big points now before big money knocks this line down.

      Spread to wait on

Duke Blue Devils (+12) vs Texas A&M Aggies

The Aggies beat Oklahoma 41-13 in the Cotton Bowl last season.

“Johnny Football” was the talk of college football and big things were expected this season. But after a mediocre 8-4 season, Texas A&M finds themselves in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on New Year’s Eve night against a Duke team that just lost 45-7 in the ACC Championship game.

Everybody saw Duke play a non-competitive game, and with Texas A&M a known commodity with a high-scoring offense, bettors will lay the points in this game.

The Aggies’ defense has been atrocious all season. They give up 31.2 points and 466.7 yards of offense per game. They allow 6.0 yards per play, 5.3 yards per rush, and 7.2 yards per pass attempt. Those are some terrible defensive numbers for a double digit favorite.

Early money has already come in on Texas A&M as this game opened at 11.5 with sportsbooks now dealing 12 and even 12.5 at some shops. Duke will be super motivated for this game - their second consecutive bowl appearance after an 18-year drought. The public will back Texas A&M in this game, so if you like Duke it’s probably best to wait for a better number closer to kickoff.

      Total to watch

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Arizona State Sun Devils

The Holiday Bowl has a history of high-scoring games with down to the wire finishes.

These two teams have potent passing offenses and defenses that leave a lot to be desired. Texas Tech averages 56.9 pass attempts per game (No. 2 in the country) while Arizona State throws the ball 35.8 times per game, good for No.30 in the country.

Neither team is good at defending the pass. Texas Tech’s defensive numbers are skewed by early season results against very bad teams. The Red Raiders have given up 48.6 points per game over their last five games. The Sun Devils allow 7.3 yards per pass attempt, a major reason they’ve allowed 92 total points in their last three games.

The first posted total for this game by an offshore sportsbook was 72 total points and it appeared on Monday night. I expect this line to rise higher once more sportsbooks begin releasing an Over/Under line on what should be a high-scoring game.

Kansas at Florida: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas Jayhawks at Florida Gators (-2.5)

Non-conference setbacks for No. 13 Kansas and No. 19 Florida are about as rare as either program being on the wrong side of last-second losses. Both programs hope to rebound from excruciating defeats Tuesday when the Gators host the Jayhawks in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. Florida saw its five-game winning streak snapped on the road last Monday when Connecticut guard Shabazz Napier retrieved a loose ball after a wild shot and hit the game-winner with less than a second remaining.

Making matter worse, the Gators had lost defensive stalwart Scottie Wilbekin – the player that would have likely been guarding Napier on the final play – to a sprained ankle in the final minutes. After rallying from a six-point deficit with 1:44 left, the Jayhawks fell at Colorado on Askia Booker’s long 3-pointer as time expired Saturday for their second painful loss in three games. “We’re not playing good at all and we’re trying to find (ourselves),” coach Bill Self told the Kansas City Star following the game.

        TV:
        7 p.m. ET, ESPN

        ABOUT KANSAS (6-2):
With the wealth of youth and athleticism on the roster, opponents have used zone defenses with great success against the Jayhawks, who have connected on 15 of their last 65 tries from 3-point range over the previous four games. “Everybody’s (going to) play us zone right now until we start making some shots...we’re not a real good shooting team yet (and) we’re not a real good passing team,” Self told Star following the loss. Star freshman Andrew Wiggins did enjoy one of his finest games for Kansas, tying a career high with 22 points against Colorado.

        ABOUT FLORIDA (6-2):
Wilbekin is expected to return against Kansas as is reserve point guard Kasey Hill, who has missed the last four contests with a high ankle sprain. If Wilbekin and Hill take the court against Kansas Tuesday, it will mark the first time all season the team will have both players available after Wilbekin missed the first five games for a violation of team rules. Casey Prather, who averaged 3.1 points over his first three seasons, is averaging 19.1 this year and only the third Florida player under coach Billy Donovan to post three 27-point games in a season.

        TRENDS:

        * Jayhawks are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.
        * Under is 4-1 in Gators last five overall.
        * Under is 9-3 in Jayhawks last 12 vs. Southeastern.
        * Gators are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.

        TIP-INS:

        1. This will be the first meeting between the schools since Kansas handed eventual national champion Florida its first loss of the 2006-07 season; the Jayhawks won the national championship the following year.

        2. The Gators are 2-7 in their last nine games decided by three points or fewer.

        3. Kansas, which has dropped two of three, has endured only one 1-3 stretch over its previous seven seasons.

Heat's "Big Three" are rare NBA underdogs in Indiana
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Miami Heat are underdogs for the first time this season, visiting the Eastern Conference-leading Indiana Pacers as 3-point road pups Tuesday.

The last time the Heat were getting the points, it was Game 3 of the NBA Finals in San Antonio and they were blown out 113-77 as 2-point underdogs. Miami closed as the betting favorite in all seven games against the Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals, going 4-3 ATS in that series.

Since the formation of the “Big Three” – LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh – the Heat have only been underdogs 33 times, going 16-15-2 ATS (against the spread) and 16-17 SU (straight up).

Here’s a look at how Miami has made out when getting the points in both the regular season and NBA Playoffs:

                2010/2011 regular season: 6-4-1 ATS
                2010/2011 postseason: 3-3-1 ATS

                2011/2012 regular season: 0-4 ATS
                2011/2012 postseason: 1-2 ATS

                2012/2013 regular season: 6-1 ATS
                2012/2013 postseason: 0-1 ATS

Record number of points produces 11-5 NFL Over/Under

Throw everything you know about handicapping winter weather out the window – if you don’t mind opening the window in this kind of cold.

Old Man Winter ravaged a number of Week 14 games but couldn’t freeze out the NFL’s red-hot offenses, with 90 touchdowns being scored during Sunday’s 14 games. Add to that Jacksonville’s 27-20 win over Houston Thursday and Chicago’s 45-28 blowout over Dallas Monday and there were 859 total points scored – the most in any week in NFL history.

All those points added up to an 11-5 Over/Under record for Week 14.

The only games that played Under the total were Tampa Bay’s 27-6 win over Buffalo, Green Bay’s 22-21 victory versus Atlanta, Arizona’s 30-10 win against St. Louis and New Orleans’ one-sided 31-13 victory over Carolina Sunday night.

The Packers’ home win was the only game of those four that was played in the cold but didn’t see nearly as much snow as games played outdoors on the East Coast. Detroit, Washington, Baltimore and Pittsburgh all had substantial snow fall before and during the games, but all tipped the total. Those four games combined to score 226 total points.

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox, who had to battle the chilly Mile High weather but no snow Sunday, told the media that the slippery conditions don’t handicap an offense but actually help it. The winter weather helped kick returners give coverage the slip, with five return touchdowns scored in those snow games Sunday.

"Some people don't understand that," Fox told USA Today. "That's why you saw a lot of those long touchdowns, particularly in the kicking game, as well, as when guys can't get their footing, they miss tackles, and that creates explosive plays."

That eruption of offense in Week 14 hasn’t done much to sway the oddsmakers’ methods for setting the NFL Over/Under in Week 15. Only a handful of totals are sitting in the 50s with a few dropping as low as 40.5 points.

And the weather is a little better for Sunday’s action. Only two games – Chicago at Cleveland and Seattle at New York – have snow in the forecast.
