Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday.......

    14) Chiefs 45, Redskins 10-- Washington didn't look like an NFL team in this game, they looked a team that has quit on the season. Chiefs scored two special teams TDs, had TD drives of 13-25-41 yards. Weren't lot of fans left in the stands whewn the secind half started.

    13) Ravens 29, Vikings 26-- Game was 12-7 Minnesota with 3:00 left, then five TDs scored in the last 2:05, one of the craziest stretches in league history. Seemed like once the snow stopped, the defense couldn't do anything on the slick field and there were big plays all over the place. Over the last 50 years, 36 points in the last 2:20 of the 4th quarter is 12 more than any other NFL game. It really was weird to watch.

    12) Patriots 27, Browns 26-- Cleveland gagged away a 26-14 lead with 2:00 left, as Patriots scored twice in 0:30, recovering an onside kick. Over their last six games, New England has been outscored by 47 points in first half, but then averaged 26.5 ppg in second half, winning five of the six games.

    11) Jets 37, Raiders 27-- Jets were even in turnovers, so they won; in their six wins, Gang Green is +1 in turnovers- they're -19 in seven losses. Jets also blocked a punt for a TD. You watch the Raiders play and wonder what their plan is for the future, or if they even have one.

    10) Bengals 42, Colts 28-- No turnovers, no sacks, not lot of defense in this game; underrated stat-- Cincinnati won/covered all six of its home games this season. Over their last six games (3-3), Colts were outscored 113-24 in first half, but they clinched AFC South when Titans lost, so they can rest up.

    9) Eagles 34, Lions 20-- Mystified why several inches of snow was never cleared off field at this game; Detroit led 14-0 with 5:00 left in third quarter, but once snow stopped, Eagles ran 25 plays for 361 yards on their last five drives, all TDs. Not often a team scores TDs on both punt/kick returns and still loses. Detroit is minus-15 in turnovers in its last six games.

    8) Dolphins 34, Steelers 28-- If Miami makes playoffs, Joe Philbin better be Coach of the Year, with all the BS he's put up with this year. Under had been 5-0-1 in Dolphins' last six games, but on a cruddy day, Miami ran ball for 181 yards with an OL thats been better without Incognito/Martin.

    7) Buccaneers 27, Bills 6-- Tampa Bay won four of last five games, covered five of last six, with only loss at Carolina. Teams combined to convert 5-26 on 3rd down; Bucs only completed 9-25 passes, but Buffalo turned ball over five times. Not many teams win with five turnovers and six points.

    6) Broncos 51, Titans 28-- Denver averages 25.1 ppg at home this year, just in the second half- this was the 4th home game this year Broncos scored 30+ points in second half, as thin air in Mile High altitude takes its toll. Titans were -12 in field position, -2 in turnovers- you need to win those categories to beat a team thats better than you.

Denver's Matt Prater kicked a 64-yard FG, breaking the all-time record, but at altitude, still not as impressive as Dempsey's 63-yarder at Tulane Stadium.

    5) Cardinals 30, Rams 10-- Credit to Arizona for its improvement this year, but I buy Sunday Ticket to watch Rams' games and I can no longer stand to watch Kellen Clemens play- he just isn't very good. Why not let young QB Austin Davis play a little, maybe he's good? If he isn't, then he's no different than Clemens. On the bright side, Rams have the Redskins #1 pick in April.

    4) Chargers 37, Giants 14-- Eli Manning has two Super Bowl rings, is 0-3 against team that drafted him; I'm sure he's happy with his career, but Giants fell behind Redskins 14-0 last week, a signal that they're not preparing well, which was confirmed in this game. San Diego is very hard to figure out.

    3) 49ers 19, Seahawks 17-- Niners kicked four FGs, threw pick in red zone, yet still won game they needed lot more than Seattle, which was travelling on a short week after whipping Saints. In two games with Seattle, Kaepernick is 28-57 passing; 49ers have one TD, three FGs in five drives into red zone.

    2) Packers 22, Falcons 21-- Green Bay trailed 21-10 at half, held Falcons scoreless in second half, and are still alive at 6-6-1, thanks to sloppy play in Detroit/Chicago. This was their first win without Rodgers; they finish with Cowboys-Steelers-Bears, will need #12 back to win division.

    1) Saints 31, Panthers 13-- Carolina kicked FGs on first two drives; hard to win in Superdome kicking FGs; Panthers' last loss was Week 5 at Arizona, also in a dome. Saints visit Charlotte in two weeks, for an outdoor game.

College football odds: BCS Bowl game opening lines

The regular season has wrapped up. The conference championship games are complete. And if the BCS bowl games are anything like the insanity of the past two weekends, it’s going to be a crazy postseason, too.

Florida State (13-0, 11-2 ATS) reaching the BCS Championship Game wasn’t really a surprise, after the Seminoles drubbed upstart Duke in the ACC championship game 45-7 to cash as a 30-favorite Saturday. Auburn, on the other hand, went on a midnight run that would have made Cinderella blush. The Tigers (12-1 SU, 11-2 ATS) stunned Georgia on a last-minute deflected pass that turned into a winning touchdown reception, then shocked Alabama with a field-goal return TD to beat the No. 1 Crimson Tide 34-28 as a 10-point underdog.

Auburn’s offense then went haywire against Missouri in a 59-42 victory Saturday in the SEC title game, with Auburn a 2-point pup. Coupled with Ohio State’s loss to Michigan State in the Big Ten title game, Auburn now finds itself playing Florida State on Jan. 6 in Pasadena, Calif.

And it’s not only a battle between the two best teams on the field, but the two best teams at the betting window. The Seminoles and Tigers are tied for the best ATS record in the nation, and Jay Kornegay, sports book director at the LVH in Las Vegas, installed Florida State as a 7.5-point favorite.

“A lot of people have fallen in love with the Tigers over the last couple of weeks, but the Seminoles are at a different level,” Kornegay said. “Their defense is stout and will be able to slow down that Auburn offense. The Tigers’ defense is very questionable and will have a high degree of difficulty stopping Florida State.”

      Rose Bowl
      Jan. 1, Pasadena, Calif.

Stanford Cardinal vs. Michigan State Spartans (+6)

The Spartans (12-1 SU, 8-4-1 ATS) capped a strong season with a 34-24 victory over Ohio State as 5.5-point ‘dogs on Saturday in the Big Ten title game, their ninth consecutive victory. Michigan State went 7-2 ATS in that stretch and won all nine games by double digits, leaning on a defense that ranks No. 1 in rushing yards and total yards, and No. 4 in points allowed (12.7 ppg.).

Stanford (11-2 SU, 7-6 ATS) walloped host Arizona State 38-14 in Saturday’s Pac-12 title tilt, rolling as a 3-point underdog to cap a late-season run of 6-1 SU (5-2 ATS), with the only loss coming on a last-second field goal at Southern Cal.

“Stanford and Michigan State mirror each other, but the Cardinal is better at almost everything,” Kornegay said. “This will be a 1980s-like game, which is becoming extinct. Huddles, talk and using the entire play clock will be aplenty."

      Fiesta Bowl
      Jan. 1, Glendale, Ariz.

Baylor Bears vs. Central Florida Knights (+16.5)

On a wild final Saturday in the Big 12, Baylor (11-1 SU, 9-3 ATS) thumped visiting Texas 30-10 as a 17.5-point chalk, and with Oklahoma State falling to Oklahoma, that gave the Bears the conference title and the Fiesta Bowl bid.

Central Florida, meanwhile, held off host Southern Methodist 17-13 laying 13.5 points Saturday. The Knights (11-1 SU, 7-5 ATS) won the automatic bid from the American Athletic Conference, but they are big ‘dogs against the Bears’ high-flying offense.

“Central Florida faced Penn State and Louisville, but those two are nothing like Baylor,” Kornegay said. “Baylor’s no-huddle offense is probably the best in college football. Central Florida can practice all it wants over the next month, but it will be a huge challenge for the Knights to stop the Bears.”

      Orange Bowl
      Jan. 3, Miami

Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Clemson Tigers (-2.5)

The Buckeyes (12-1 SU, 6-6-1 ATS) were 5.5-point favorites against Michigan State in the Big Ten finale, and they led 24-20 entering the fourth quarter Saturday at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis, poised to win a berth in the BCS Championship Game.

Then they got outscored 14-0 in the final frame, losing 34-24. That knocked Ohio State to the Orange Bowl instead, where it will face Clemson (10-2, 6-6 ATS) out of the ACC. The Tigers also come in on a losing note, falling on the road to archrival South Carolina 31-17 as a 2.5-point pup on Nov. 30.

“This will be a tough matchup for the Buckeyes,” Kornegay said. “Ohio State thinks it had its hands full with Michigan State. Well, the Tigers’ offense is no comparison. Clemson’s no-huddle is also one of the best, and the Buckeyes will have to get their offense going to keep up.”

      Sugar Bowl
      Jan. 2, New Orleans

Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Oklahoma Sooners (+11.5)

Alabama (11-1 SU, 6-5-1 ATS) blew its shot at a third straight national title with its stunning 34-28 loss to Auburn on Nov. 30. Even though the Crimson Tide were on the road in that game, they were 10-point favorites.

Oklahoma, on the other hand, played its way to a BCS bowl berth with a 33-24 road upset of rival Oklahoma State in a downright freezing Bedlam game on Saturday. The Sooners (10-2, 7-5 ATS) won and covered their last three games.

“This will be all about motivation,” Kornegay said. ”Will Alabama be motivated? I’m sure the Crimson Tide are going to hear a lot about the last time they were in the Sugar Bowl, against Utah. The Utes had a very good team and took the Crimson Tide behind the woodshed.

“Most likely, this game will motivate Alabama. The inconsistent quarterback play that we have seen at Oklahoma will make it a huge challenge for the Sooners.”

Bank shots: NBA's weekly betting news and notes
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best - and worst - basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Dec. 1 to 7.

Hottest ATS - Detroit Pistons (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS)

The Pistons have really revved up their game of late, winning four games in a row, which included a three game road trip with stops in Miami and Chicago. Detroit has now covered in six of the past eight games and are in second place in the Central Division. Andre Drummond has been an absolute monster for the Pistons during the winning streak, averaging 18.3 points and 17.5 rebounds per game. This week the Pistons host a rematch with the Heat, then they face off against Minnesota at home, before heading on the road to take on New Orleans and then Brooklyn back at home.

            Coldest ATS - Philadelphia 76ers (1-3 SU, 0-4 ATS)

After the 76ers impressive start to the season, they have really struggled of late, winning only once in their past seven games and they haven't covered the spread six games in a row. On defense the Sixers are giving up a league worst 110.2 points per game and are the second to last team in the league when it comes to defensive rebounding. At the offensive end the Sixers are really struggling to sink the 3-ball, only shooting 32 percent from downtown. This week the Sixers host the L.A. Clippers, then go on the road to face Minnesota and Toronto, before returning home to take on Portland.

Best Over play - Portland Trail Blazers (4-1 SU, 5-0 O/U)

The Blazers continue to play great basketball after notching wins against top contenders Oklahoma City and Indiana this week. Portland now sits atop the Northwest Division with a 17-4 record and are the second highest scoring team in the NBA, netting 106.2 points per game. In fact, they also rank in the top 10 in field goal percentage, 3-point percentage, free throw percentage and offensive rebounds per game. The Blazers will look to hit the Over for the seventh time in a row this week when they take on Utah, before matchups with Houston and Philadelphia.

Best Under play - Charlotte Bobcats (1-2 SU, 1-2 O/U)

Despite the fact the Bobcats hit the over once this week, they are still the best Under play in the NBA this season and are the best Under play in Bank Shots two weeks in a row. The Bobcats have done this by going 11-1-1 O/U in their last 13 games and that trend should still be a solid play going forward thanks to their combination of good defense and lousy offense. The Bobcats are second in the league in points against per game at 91.5, but are dead last in points per game, field goal percentage and 3-point percentage. This week the Bobcats face Golden State, Orlando, Indiana and the L.A. Lakers.

            Surveying the Schedule:

Can we just fast forward to the Eastern Conference Final please? The Miami Heat at 15-5 and the Indiana Pacers at 18-2 are clearly the class of the conference and it would be nice if we could skip past all these needless regular season games and jump straight to the playoffs. The two teams meet on Tuesday in Miami for the first time since the Heat eliminated the Pacers in last year's conference finals. The Heat are 10-10 ATS and 11-9 O/U, while the Pacers are now a league best 15-5 ATS and 7-13 O/U.

Pucking the trends: NHL's weekly betting news and notes
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

For the week of Dec. 2 - Dec. 8.

              Hot team

              Montreal Canadiens (4-0 SU)

The Canadiens have ripped off five wins in a row, including an impressive win against Boston and have now surpassed the Bruins for first place in the Atlantic. A big reason for Montreal's current success is not surprisingly the play of Carey Price. Price has won his last seven starts a is on a current run where he has allowed less than two goals in each of his last 10 starts. The competition gets a little stiffer for the Habs this week when they take on the Los Angeles Kings and then travel to Philadelphia to take on the resurgent Flyers.

              Cold Team

              Nashville Predators (0-3 SU)

The Predators have seemed a little toothless lately, losing five straight games, four of which were at home. The skid has landed the Predators in last place in the Central. Nashville has clearly missed the presence of Pekka Rinne between the pipes, as they are giving up at least three goals a game in the past five games. But Nashville has struggled even more at putting the puck in the net, and have scored just over 1 goal a game during the current losing streak. This week the Preds have matchups against the New York Rangers, Dallas and San Jose.

              Best Over play

              San Jose Sharks (3-1 O/U)

Despite failing to hit the Over on Sunday at Minnesota, the Sharks have been a great play in that regard this season. They have the league's third best record against the Over so far this season thanks to an offense that loves to pepper the net with shots. In fact, the Sharks lead the NHL in shots on goal at a whopping 36 per game. They are also third in the league in goals per game at 3.3. The Sharks are back in action this week with a mini two game home stand against the New York Islanders and a rematch with Minnesota.

              Best Under play

              Tampa Bay Lightning (0-3 O/U)

Do you think the Lightning miss Steven Stamkos? The Lightning have only averaged 1.9 goals over their last 10 games and he still leads the Bolts in goals even though he has been out of their lineup for almost a month. Tampa bay has lost three of the last four and seven of their last 10. A bright spot for the Lightning has been goaltender Ben Bishop. He is tied for fourth in the league with 15 wins and has a goals against average under two. This week the Lightning travel to Washington and host Detroit before starting a three game road trip.

              Surveying the schedule:

If the New York Rangers want to make a move up in the standings the time is now. The Rangers are in the midst of an eight game home stand that they need to take advantage of. It did not get off to a great start with a 4-3 loss versus New Jersey, but a hapless trio of Nashville, Columbus and Calgary all make stops to Madison Square Garden this week.
