    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Since 1995, these college football coaches have switched jobs, within the same league:

-- Tommy Tuberville—Bolted Ole Miss for Auburn; 14 years later, he’s still carpet bagging his way around America, but making $2.2M a year doing it, now in Cincinnati.

-- Houston Nutt—From Arkansas to Ole Miss—Made up for Tuberville bolting for Auburn.

    – Bruce Snyder—From Cal to Arizona State— Was lot easier to get guys into ASU than Berkeley.

    – Tom O’Brien—From BC to NC State, where he had a QB named Russell Wilson. It worked out better for Wilson.

    – Todd Graham—From Tulsa to Rice—Made Larry Brown look like Walter Alston until settling in at Arizona State.

    – Larry Smith—From Arizona to USC, made it to three straight Rose Bowls, once passed me on the LA freeway driving a maroon Mercedes convertible. Nice car.

    – Bill Curry—From Alabama to Kentucky—This is only case here where coach was fired and just found a job wherever he could.

    – Steve Sarkisian—From Washington to USC. Ending yet to be written.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.......

    13) With Robinson Cano still in free agent limbo, people here in upstate NY have been critical of him because he doesn’t sprint out every ground ball he hits. Fair criticism, but here is how many games Cano has played the last seven years: 160-159-161-160-159-161-160. He plays every game.

Meanwhile, in one A’s-Angels game last April, three guys (Crisp-Young-Bourjos) went on the DL after pulling muscles running out grounders they had zero chance to beat out. I want my star players to play every day; if that means taking a play off now and then to prevent wasteful injuries (Evan Longoria missed 88 games with a pulled hammy in 2011) then so be it. Cano always plays and that’s important.

    12) Looks like Richard Pitino got out of Miami just in time; while Pitino’s Minnesota Gophers were beating Florida State Tuesday night, his old team, Florida International, lost to a D-II team by 28. Pitino was only at FIU for a year and now he’s a millionaire in Minnesota.

    11) Thanks to DirecTV not having the Pac-12 Network, this has to be the latest in the college hoop season I’ve gone without seeing UCLA play yet. ESPN3 and Pac-12 Network are not available to DirecTV subscribers, which is too bad. Like to watch as many games as possible, and especially the Bruins this year, with Steve Alford now coaching there.

    10) Eli Manning refused to play for the Chargers after they drafted him, but his backup QB at Ole Miss got traded to San Diego this week, when the Padres got OF Seth Smith from Oakland for Luke Gregerson.

    9) Feel bad for Nets’ assistant Lawrence Frank getting demoted after Brooklyn’s 5-12 start, but then you hear Frank will get paid $5.3M over the next four years, for whatever menial tasks he’s been assigned, and you stop feeling bad for him. He’ll probably be the interim coach when they mercifully fire the overmatched Jason Kidd later this year.

    8) If you’re a Twins’ fan, you’re glad they opened their wallets this winter, but are you excited that they spent $73M on Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes? I’m asking, not saying there shouldn’t be excitement, but Hughes especially seems more like a suspect than someone who will be a big help.

    7) I’m no fan of the Heisman Trophy; think it gets too much talk, especially early in a season, but if Johnny Manziel isn’t one of the four finalists this year, then I’m not sure what criteria they use to pick guys. Jordan Lynch went 6-17 passing in a MAC game last week, what would he do in the SEC? Is he hanging 42 on Alabama? I don't think so.

    6) LSU QB Zach Mettenberger apparently tore his ACL against Arkansas and won’t be able to work out before the NFL Draft in April. He and the Murray kid at Georgia are in the same boat now, its too bad.

    5) Golf is an Olympic sport now? They’ll lose whatever credibility the “Olympic ideal” has/had when Eldrick Woods and his co-workers tee it up for a gold medal. Escorts in Brazil should have a big two weeks, though.

    4) Boston Celtics are 8-12…….and in first place in the hideous Atlantic Division. Toronto would be in first if they hadn’t blown a 75-48 lead in Oakland Tuesday. Raptors didn’t even cover the game as 8-point dogs after leading by 27 in the third quarter.

    3) NBA teams have very detailed scouting; for instance, when Michael Carter-Williams of the 76ers shoots from 10+ feet away from the basket, he is 29-64 (45.3%) when he shoots from the left side, 12-61 (19.7%) when he shoots from the middle or right, so you play him tighter on the left side of the floor. Information like that hasn’t always been available, but now it is.

    2) With Giants going to San Diego this week, lot is being made about how Archie Manning wouldn’t let Eli play for the Chargers; had he not done that, the Giants had already told Ben Roethlisberger they were going to draft him, so they would not have taken Philip Rivers, who obviously wound up in San Diego. NFL history in the last ten years would be a lot different.

    1) Saints’ airplane had troubles Monday night; they didn’t get out of Seattle until noon ET Tuesday, meaning this is a very short week for their coaches/players, with a big game against Carolina Sunday night.

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Friday, December 6

Arizona State lost twe of three in SoCal last weekend; losing by three to Miami when Carson shot 2-14 with tweaked ankle; have to see him run before deciding anything here. DePaul is 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 7-18-18 points; they're turning ball over 20.4% of time but are shooting 39.5% from arc. ASU won its only true road game, 66-60 at UNLV.

LMU won both its road games so far, winning by total of five points in wins at Long Beach/Riverside; Lions lost by 9 points each to only two top 200 teams they've played, No Iowa/Vandy. Pittsburgh is 8-0, with five wins by 21+ points; Panthers force turnovers 20.4% of time, grab 40.5% of own missed shots. LMU is making only 28.1% from the arc.

South Carolina gets Ellington back from football team, will help depth in backcourt; Gamecocks are shooting just 31.6% from arc but force TOs 20.6% of time. Carolina hasn't played in 12 days; they lost at Clemson by 14, Baylor by 2 in only two road games. Oklahoma State got beat by Memphis is Disney finals; this is their first home game in 17 days.

First road game for Cal team that beat UCSB by 9-20 points last couple years; Gauchos shot 25% inside arc in LY's 68-59 loss that Cal led by 22 with 8:17 left. UCSB made 13-30 from arc to make it closer; they lost at UCLA by 13 Tuesday- they led by 1 with 10:00 left, but Bruins had a 27-7 edge on foul line. Gauchos lost three of their last four games.

7-1 Kentucky is least-experienced team in country, but they played PC in Brooklyn Sunday, face Baylor here in Jerry World, so they're gaining experience while grabbing 48% of their missed shots (#1 in US), holding foes to 37.2% inside arc. Baylor is 3-1 vs top 100 teams, losing by 7 tio Syracuse in Maui final. Bears are turning ball over 22.7% of the time.

Manhattan is 8-3 in its last 11 games vs Marist; they're 3-2 in last five visits here, by 19-1-17 points. Jaspers are 0-2 at home, 4-0 on road; all six of their games were decided by 9 or less points. Red Foxes are 0-8, losing by 9 at Iona (+18) in MAAC opener after losing to Morgan State in OT in game before that. Marist has 5th-worst eFG% (39.5%) in US.

Siena is 2-7, but won by 1 at Cornell in only game vs team outside top 200; they led Purdue by 13 at half in last game Sunday but lost by 5, its fourth loss in row, all vs top 100 teams. 1-7 Niagara lost last six games, all on road/neutral sites; Eagles won last four series games. Siena lost last five visits here, by 15-13-14-4-23 points. Niagara's new coach isn't as good as the last one; their opponents make 57.1% inside the arc.

St Peter's won four of last six visits to Canisius, but Peacocks got swept by 9-12 points by Canisius in LY's series. St Peter's is 2-4 with three losses by 7 or less points and two wins vs stiffs- they're making 30.2% on arc. Griffins haven't played in ten days since losing to a D-II team by 14 on neutral floor. St Peter's had won nine of ten series games before getting swept LY.

Fairfield lost its last six games, losing by 7 at Loyola, 9 at Providence in only true road games; stags turn ball over 25.3% of time, 4th-worst rate in country. Fairfield beat Quinnipac by 12 on neutral court couple years ago; this is MAAC debut for Bobcats, who are 3-0 vs teams outside top 200, winning by 5-3-41 points- they grab 43.4% of their own misses.

Kentucky at Baylor: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kentucky Wildcats at Baylor Bears (+3.5)

The site of this season’s Final Four will get a test run Friday night when No. 4 Kentucky meets No. 20 Baylor in the inaugural Big 12/SEC Challenge at AT&T Stadium in Dallas. Both teams are led by 6-9 forwards who can score as well as they rebound. Cory Jefferson is averaging 13.5 points and 8.8 boards for the Bears, similar to what he provided last season as a junior en route to winning All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. Julius Randle, a Dallas native, is averaging 18.1 points and 12.5 rebounds in his freshman campaign for the Wildcats.

Kentucky struggled against Baylor’s zone defense alignments when these teams met last December and shot 30 percent from the field in the 64-55 loss, the lowest under coach John Calipari. Baylor still has 7-1 center Isaiah Austin manning the middle of the key, so the Wildcats will need to figure out how to counter his size, preferably with some efficient perimeter shooting. Kentucky has been hot-and-cold from 3-point range lately, shooting 3-for-16 last week against Eastern Michigan but coming back with a 6-for-8 performance Sunday against Providence.

              TV:
              10 p.m. ET, ESPN

              ABOUT KENTUCKY (7-1):
The Wildcats have a solid big man as well in 7-footer forward Willie Cauley-Stein, who produced 15 points, eight rebounds and nine blocked shots in Sunday’s win, the second-most blocks in program history. He has at least four blocks in the last three games and he and Randle will make it tough on Baylor’s guards to get to the rim. The other three starters for Kentucky also stand 6-6, giving the Wildcats one of the bigger starting lineups in the nation.

              ABOUT BAYLOR (7-1):
Brady Heslip quickly put behind a dismal performance against Dayton last week at the Maui Invitational by shooting 4-for-7 from the 3-point line the following day against No. 5 Syracuse and then making 5-of-8 Sunday against Hardin-Simmons. Heslip comes off the bench for the Bears and gives them a nice boost when he’s shooting well. The Baylor reserves combine to average 32.9 points and the first four off the bench play an average of 19.7 minutes.

              TRENDS:

              * Wildcats are 4-1 ATS in their last five vs. Big 12.
              * Bears are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
              * Under is 5-2 in Bears last seven non-conference games.
              * Under is 6-2 in Wildcats last eight overall.

              TIP-INS:

              1. Baylor is 3-0 this season in games decided by 5 points or less after finishing 2-8 in such contests last season.

              2. This marks the third straight season Baylor and Kentucky have met with the Wildcats also beating the Bears to reach the 2012 Final Four.

              3. The 6-for-8 shooting from long range against Providence marked the first time the Friars shot better than 71.4 percent from beyond the arc since 1986.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Keep an eye on these early-season NCAAB giant killers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Upsets always reign supreme in college basketball, but which teams will prove to be giant killers this season? Here’s a look at four mid-major schools that have already – and should continue – to make some noise leading up to tournament time.

St. Mary’s Gaels (WCC, 6-0 SU, 4-1 ATS)

The Gaels may not be the biggest name in the West Coast Conference, but they do own first place following Gonzaga’s loss to Dayton in the Maui Invitational. Junior forward Brad Waldow has been the key, emerging as the team’s leader in scoring (17.7 ppg), rebounding (7.0 rpg) and blocked shots (2.2 bpg). St. Mary’s could be poised for upset wins at Boise State (MWC, 7-0) and at home to South Carolina (SEC, 2-2) in December.

                Charlotte 49ers (C-USA, 6-2 SU, 5-1 ATS)

It’s been a solid start for the Niners, highlighted by an unexpected win over then 14th-ranked Michigan to win the Puerto Rico Tip-Off two weeks ago. An OT home loss to Davidson Wednesday notwithstanding, Charlotte has benefitted from balanced scoring with no less than six players averaging double-digits per night. Two big games vs. two solid ACC teams later this month – at Florida State Dec. 17 and vs. Georgia Tech Dec. 29 – may provide a gold rush.

Belmont Bruins (Ohio Valley, 8-2 SU, 3-4 ATS)

Impressive wins over Indiana State and at Chapel Hill early on not only vaulted Belmont into top spot in the Ohio Valley Conference but into the national spotlight (they received a program-best 31 votes in the AP poll after knocking off North Carolina). If the Bruins are serious about cracking the Top 25, a win in Lexington against the No. 3 Kentucky Wildcats on Dec. 21 would certainly do the trick. Having made the NCAA tournament six times in the past 10 years, an upset by Belmont against a top-ranked team isn’t completely out of the question.

Indiana State Sycamores (Missouri Valley, 5-2 SU, 2-4 ATS)

Indiana State continues to make a name for itself as a giant killer, long after Larry Bird’s departure. Last season, the Sycamores defeated the likes of Miami, Mississippi, Creighton and Wichita State before an end-of-season funk cost them a chance to qualify for the big dance. This year, it’s tournament or bust. But after two crushing one-point losses, they’ll need to exact revenge against Belmont and come up big vs. Saint Louis (7-2) later this month. It’s kinda what they do.

Golden State at Houston: What bettors need to know
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden State Warriors at Houston Rockets (OFF)

The Golden State Warriors and the Houston Rockets have put on some memorable shooting displays in their recent meetings and are again two of the top offenses in the league. The Warriors will look to post a third straight win behind Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson when they visit Houston on Friday. The Rockets tied an NBA record with 23 3-pointers in a 140-109 home win over Golden State last season but are coming off a 9-for-31 effort from beyond the arc in a loss to the Suns.

The Warriors snapped a five-game losing streak in the series and got a little payback for that record-setting performance when they put a 108-78 hurting on Houston in the final meeting last season on Mar. 17. Curry and Thompson combined for 11 3-pointers in that triumph and got hot together in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s 112-103 Raptors, in which Golden State overcame a 27-point deficit. “An incredible game,” Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. “…Just a huge win for us. I can’t say enough about how proud I am of this group.”

                              TV:
8 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (Golden State), CSN Houston.

                              LINE:
The line for the game is currently off the board.

                              POWER RANKINGS:
                              Golden State (-11.5) - Houston (-10) + home court (-3) = Houston -1.5

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (11-8, 9-8-2 ATS):
Several Golden State players and Jackson credited a halftime speech by backup center Jermaine O’Neal for the turnaround against the Raptors. “Jermaine O’Neal gave one of the realest speeches I’ve ever heard,” Thompson said. “He said, ‘We’ll see what we’re made of in the second half.’ We showed what we’re made of, resilient.” O’Neal backed it up on the court with 11 points and eight rebounds and was on the floor in crunch time in place of starting center Andrew Bogut. “We were making plays,” Jackson explained. “When (Bogut) left the game we were making plays. I wanted to get him a quick breather and then we began to make plays.”

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (13-7, 11-8-1 ATS):
Houston leads the NBA in scoring at an average of 108.1 points but is slumping of late with back-to-back losses. James Harden, who went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc when the Rockets matched the 3-point record against the Warriors last season, had a horrible game in the 97-88 loss to Phoenix on Wednesday, going 0-of-10 from 3-point range and 3-of-17 overall. “We didn’t play very good, and that’s the bottom line,” coach Kevin McHale said.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Warriors are 2-8 ATS in the last 10 meetings in Houston.
                              * Underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
                              * Road team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
                              * Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.

                              BUZZER BEATERS:

                              1. Houston PG Jeremy Lin (knee) and F Chandler Parsons (back spasms) are both questionable.

                              2. Rockets C Dwight Howard had 18 rebounds on Wednesday, his most since a 24-board outburst on Nov. 11.

                              3. Curry is 20-for-40 from 3-point range over the last five games.
