    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

NFL trends with Week 14 upon us........

-- Houston is 1-5-1 vs spread in its last seven road games; Jaguars are 2-11 in last 13 at home.

-- Patriots are 5-13 in last 18 games as a double digit favorite.

-- Eagles covered twice in last 13 games as a favorite.

-- Chiefs covered five of last six tries as a road favorite.

-- Bengals covered eight of their last nine home games.

-- Carolina covered its last seven games as a road underdog.

    *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13..........

    32) Texans—Curious to see if they’ll fire Kubiak or bring him back next year; they led Patriots by 10 half, were pounding Indy at half when Kubiak had his mini-stroke. There is talent here, but no wins since Week 2.

    31) Browns—Hoyer gave them a spark at QB and so did Campbell, but they both got hurt; Weeden put up big numbers last week, but they still lost at home to 3-9 Jaguars. What kind of numbers would Josh Gordon put up with a decent QB throwing him passes?

    30) Redskins—Post-season staff evaluation should be fun, when the owner suggests that the head coach fire his son, the OC. The coach makes $7M a year, so he ain’t going anywhere; the franchise QB appears to not get along with the coach’s son. Its officially a debacle.

    29) Falcons—Good comeback win in Toronto, so they’re 1-0 in Canada this year, but 2-9 in this country.

    28) Packers—0-4-1 without Aaron Rodgers; when he returns, they jump into top half of league, but by then it might be too late.

    8) Cardinals—When Temple fired Bruce Arians years ago, wonder if he thought he’d ever be back in Philly, as an NFL head coach?

    7) Chiefs—Will right the ship in DC this week, then jockey for Wild Card position; Broncos aren’t going 2-2 against their soft finish.

    6) Saints—They’re scoring 13 points less a game on the road than at home, and that includes a dome game in Atlanta. Winning in Seattle in January ain’t going to be easy.

    5) 49ers—Only good thing about Candlestick Park was A’s the won World Series there in ’89; I’m looking forward to when they implode the place. In early 70’s, they actually had artificial turf there, not really sure why.

    4) Patriots—Would be interesting if Seattle played Pats in Super Bowl, since Pete Carroll was Pats’ coach before Belichick. If they do, hope Seahawks hire extra security for their practices.

    3) Broncos—I can’t help but think when the Ravens scored that 70-yard TD in the last minute to force OT in that playoff game LY, was that Peyton Manning’s best shot to win a Super Bowl in Denver? They’ll be a #1 seed, but a #1 seed with a gimpy, 36-year old QB.

    2) Panthers—Won/covered last eight games, play Saints two of next three weeks, with a division title at stake. Carolina covered 7 in row as a road dog.

    1) Seahawks—I’m not giving up on the Tom O’Brien angle of the Russell Wilson story until some network has the onions to go interview O’Brien and ask him why he cut such a “coach’s dream” loose before his senior year at NC State?

NBA TNT doubleheader: Knicks at Nets, Heat at Bulls
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Brooklyn Nets (-1, 189)

When the 2013-14 NBA schedule was released months ago, an early December meeting between the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks looked like a sure bet to be a battle between two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. Instead, the Knicks will look to snap a nine-game slide when they visit the disappointing Nets on Thursday. Brooklyn is fighting through a series of injuries and turmoil on the coaching staff while dropping eight of its last 10.

New York is just one loss away from matching the worst record in the NBA, and star Carmelo Anthony is not happy about it. “We are the laughingstock of the league right now,” he told reporters. “It’s nothing to hide. We are.” The Nets would be the laughingstock if not for the Knicks and are hoping to snap a five-game home losing streak on Thursday.

      TV:
      7 p.m. ET, TNT

      POWER RANKINGS:
      Knicks (-2.7) - Nets (-2.5) + Home Court (-3.0) = Nets +2.8

ABOUT THE KNICKS (3-13, 4-12 ATS):
New York is without Tyson Chandler (broken leg) and is getting little from anyone other than Anthony. Coach Mike Woodson does not believe his players have quit on him and likes the way his team looks in practice. “Right now I think the spirits are still high,” Woodson told ESPN radio in New York. “Practice was spirited (on Wednesday). I think our guys are committed. They haven’t quit.” Anthony did not sound positively spirited when he told reporters, “Do I like being laughed at? Hell no. I don’t like that feeling.”

ABOUT THE NETS (5-13, 6-12 ATS):
Brooklyn coach Jason Kidd played for the Knicks last season when the team won 54 games to take the Atlantic Division but is now wearing a suit on the sidelines and making some tough decisions about his staff, including demoting veteran coach Lawrence Frank. That move did not help much on Tuesday, as the Nets were blown out 111-87 in Denver with the former top assistant off the bench. Brooklyn is without Paul Pierce (broken hand), Deron Williams (ankle), Andrei Kirilenko (back) and Jason Terry (knee) while Kevin Garnett is averaging a career low in scoring (6.5 points) and Brook Lopez is seeing constant double teams.

      TRENDS:

      * Under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
      * Knicks are 7-3-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings in Brooklyn.
      * Knicks are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 vs. NBA Atlantic.
      * Nets are 0-5 ATS in their last five home games.

      BUZZER BEATERS:

      1. New York rookie SG Tim Hardaway Jr. is 7-for-11 from 3-point range in the last two games.

      2. The teams split the four meetings last season, with the margin of victory an average of 6.8 points.

      3. Brooklyn G Joe Johnson is averaging 24 points on 17-for-30 shooting over the last two contests.

Miami Heat at Chicago Bulls (+4.5, 189)

A meeting between the Miami Heat and the Chicago Bulls generally produces some sizzle, whether or not Derrick Rose is involved. But Rose’s latest injury has sent the Bulls into a tailspin, and they will be trying to win for just the second time in eight games when they host the Heat on Thursday. Miami had a 10-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday and is opening up a four-game trip at Chicago that finishes with a stop at East-leading Indiana.

The Bulls remained one of the strongest defensive teams in the league with Rose out for the 2012-13 season but are struggling on that end since the latest season-ending knee injury to the former MVP. Chicago showed some fight in a 131-128 triple-overtime home loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday but were burned on the perimeter, where they allowed the Pelicans to knock down 11 3-pointers. “Our defense is not there,” Luol Deng told the team’s website. “Especially we are not covering the (3-point) line well. That’s hurting us.”

      TV:
9:30 p.m. ET, TNT, Sun Sports (Miami)

      POWER RANKINGS:
      Heat (-14.5) - Bulls (-7.0) + Home Court (-3.0) = Bulls +4.5

ABOUT THE HEAT (14-4, 9-9 ATS):
Miami is among the league leaders in 3-point efficiency, knocking down 41.1 percent from long range, and rattled in 11-of-20 from beyond the arc in a 107-95 home triumph over the Bulls in the season opener on Oct. 29. The Heat were just 9-for-28 from 3-point range on Tuesday, however, as Shane Battier, James Jones and Chris Bosh combined to go 0-for-9. LeBron James is fighting through a back injury but is still shooting 57.8 percent from the field in his last three games.

ABOUT THE BULLS (7-9, 6-10 ATS):
Despite the loss of Rose and the recent swoon, coach Tom Thibodeau is taking a positive approach. “I don’t see anyone hanging their head,” Thibodeau told ESPN Chicago. “(Rose’s) not going to be here, we know that. We’ve got more than enough here. Just concentrate on what we have to concentrate on.” Deng is stepping up with 27.4 points on 54.8 percent shooting in the last five games and Taj Gibson is coming off a career-best 26 points and 14 rebounds in Monday’s loss.

      TRENDS:

      * Heat are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
      * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
      * Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
      * Under is 11-5 in the last 16 meetings in Chicago.

      BUZZER BEATERS:

      1. Heat G Dwyane Wade (soreness) sat out Tuesday’s game and is day-to-day.

      2. Miami has taken five straight in the series going back to last spring’s Eastern Conference semifinals.

      3. Chicago F Carlos Boozer is struggling to 7.3 points on 33.3 percent shooting in the last three contests.

            Armadillo's Write-Up

            Thursday, December 5

Mississippi State is off to 5-1 start, winning last two games by total of three points; Bulldogs force turnovers 26.1% of time (#6 in US)-- their only loss was by 19 at Utah State, its only road game and only game vs team in top 225. TCU lost finals in Alaska by 21 to Harvard; they won by hoop at Washington State, its only road game against a D-I team.

West Virginia made 46.5% of its 3's in 6-2 start; its six wins are against teams outside top 200, losses to teams ranked 105-9. #48 Missouri won first seven games, winning by 11-13 points in two games in Vegas last week- none of their seven wins are vs teams ranked better than #144 in US. SEC home favorites are 16-10 vs spread. Big X underdogs are 10-6.

Providence won its last three games with Rhode Island, all by 13+; they are 7-2, one of tallest teams in country but have injury issues. Friars are making 81.3% on foul line, #3 in US. URI is 5-3 with no wins against a team ranked higher than #266; Rams are 0-3 vs top 130 teams, losing by 31-28-7 points- Friars are #60. Big East faves are 7-10 away from home.

Dartmouth is 2-1 vs D-I teams, winning by 18-25 points vs teams not in top 300- they won by 25 at Maine Sunday, first road game of year for a team making 41.8% of its 3's. Northern Illinois is 1-4 despite playing all its games at home except one- their only win is over San Jose by a point. Huskies are shooting 20.9% from arc, the worst percentage in country.

Rebuilding Vanderbilt is 4-3, with all four wins by 11 or less points vs teams ranked #150 or lower; all three Commodore losses are vs teams in top 70. #204 Marshall is 0-2 on road, losing by 8 in OT at Morehead, by 10 at East Tennessee. Herd hasn't beaten a team ranked above #200. SEC home favorites are 16-10. C-USA road underdogs are 15-15.

Ole Miss is 6-0, beating Ga Tech/Penn State in NYC last week, winning by hoop at Coastal Carolina in only road game; Rebels are making 39.1% of 3's, but just 64.6% on foul line. Kansas State is 4-3, losing two out of three on neutral floors; Wildcats lost to Georgetown by 27 in only game vs top 100 team- they're turning ball over 20.6% of time, making 26.6% from the arc, both lousy numbers.

San Diego State won Anaheim tourney, beating pair of Big East teams in last two games; Aztecs won last seven games with San Diego, winning by 12-7-5 in last three visits here- this is State's first true road game this year. Toreros are 7-2 against lousy schedule, losing at New Mexico by 7 in only top 100 game. Mountain West faves are 5-2 away from home.

VCU forces turnovers 27.5% of time, #2 in US; interesting contrast vs Eastern Kentucky team that runs Princeton offense- they lost by 19 at NC State last game, only top 170 team they've played. VCU is 6-2 with four wins by 13+ points; they've got game with regional rival ODU on Saturday, better not overlook EKU squad that is 31-12 last 1.5 years.

Rider beat Monmouth last six years, with four of six wins by 12+, now they're MAAC rivals for first time. Broncs beat Monmouth 65-62 LY, but they turned ball over 28 times after leading by 15 at half. Hawks are 3-4, with all three wins vs teams ranked #282 or lower; three of their four losses are by 10+ points- they're shooting 42% inside arc- not good.

Air Force just got whacked by Colorado/Richmond as they're rebuilding after going 8-8 in tough Mountain West LY; Falcons are turning ball over 23.1% of time (#334 in US) and haven't beaten anyone ranked in top 300 #261 South Dakota is 2-3 vs D-I teams, with two wins by total of five points; only one of those games was home. Summit road dogs are 10-12.

Seton Hall made 10-21 from arc, forced 18 turnovers in 89-58 over LIU LY; Pirates just lost 58-54 to FDU, NEC rival of LIU's, terrible loss for Big East team. LIU is 2-4 but lost by 1 at Indiana, which doesn't make lot of sense; its their only loss by less than 15 points. Blackbirds have awful defensive numbers, allowing 57% on shots inside the arc.

Georgetown won its last three games, including win over VCU after 1-2 start, but Hoyas are turning ball over 20.6% of time, make just 31.7% from arc- three of their four wins are by 18+ points. High Point is 2-3 vs D-i teams, with losses by 8-7-3 points; they haven't played any big name schools yet. Panthers are shooting 27% from arc, turning ball over 20.1% of time- they're coached by former UNC player Scott Cherry.
