13) Bronx Bombers give Jacoby Ellsbury seven years, $153M; over last four years, he's played an average of 96 games a year. Surprised that anyone got a 7-year contract, especially a guy with his history of being hurt.

12) In five wins, Jets turned ball over five times, were +1 in turnovers; in their seven losses, they’ve given ball away 21 times (-19 in turnovers).

11) UConn’s basketball team is already 4-0 vs top 100 teams, with those four wins by a total of five points, and three of those four opponents are in the top 50.

10) Tim Duncan had 23 points, 21 rebounds Monday, making him the oldest NBA player to record a 20-20 game.

9) Only six of 40 onside kicks in NFL this season have been successful.

7) Orioles dumped closer Jim Johnson so they could use his $11M salary to go after other free agents, allowing the A’s to steal him for a 2B they had no use for, Jemile Weeks (Rickie’s brother). With Grant Balfour leaving for a big payday, Oakland needed to reinforce its bullpen and now they have.

6) AJ Pierzynski has a .322 career batting average at Fenway Park, which is a good thing since that’ll be where he plays his home games next year. Guy is 36 but is durable, still has decent production for a 30+ catcher.

5) In last five New England games, they’ve been outscored 78-37 in first half, but outscored opponents 133-56 after halftime. That’s 26.6 ppg in last five games, just in the second half of those games.

4) Tough weekend for hands in the NBA: Anthony Davis, Paul Pierce, JJ Redick all broke bones in their hand, will each be out a month or so.

3) Carolina Panthers converted their last eight 4th down plays, scored TDs on six of those eight drives.

2) Sorry to see Jim Grobe resign as football coach at Wake Forest; think he’s a good coach, but Wake is one of smallest schools in country playing bigtime football, and it’s a tough place to win. The guy they replace him with better be a damn good recruiter—Ed Orgeron’s name comes to mind, but they’re probably more likely to go after Clemson’s OC Chad Morris.

1) Sunday afternoon, guy posted a pic on Twitter of a betting slip he bought last January 30; $100 on Auburn to win the national championship in football this fall, at 500-1 odds. That’s a $50,000 ticket he is sitting on; all he needs is the Tigers to beat Missouri, and for either Ohio State or Florida State to lose this weekend, and Auburn will be in the title game. Wonder how many other teams he put $100 down on.

Football lines that make you go hmmm...

Is home field really worth that much to the Seattle Seahawks?

CenturyLink Field flexed its pipes against New Orleans Monday night, breaking the world record for the loudest crowd ever and constantly crossed the Saints’ signals, helping the Seahawks win 34-7 and gain the inside track on home field in the NFC playoffs.

Now, Seattle moves down the coast to San Francisco where it's a 2.5-point road underdog versus the 49ers in Week 14. The Seahawks haven’t been nearly as dominant away from the Emerald City but own an identical ATS mark (4-2) on the road as they do at home, and look like the best team in football after mashing New Orleans Monday night.

Seattle’s opposition Sunday – San Francisco - is gaining momentum after two straight wins, but those victories came against the Redskins and Rams, who have a combined record of 8-16 on the season.

The Niners offense is nowhere near as explosive as in 2012 and only had two touchdowns on 338 yards in the victory over St. Louis, instead settling for three field goals and going 4-for-12 on third down. They went just 4-for-14 on third down versus Washington the week before.

Seattle’s offense is probably the most underrated attack in the NFL, simply because the Seahawks’ defense grabs all the glory. Russell Wilson & Co. average 28.3 points per game – second most in the league – and were a lethal 7-for-14 on third downs Monday night. On the year, Seattle boasts a 40.52 percent third-down completion rate – ninth best in the NFL.

When you have divisional clashes like this, with two strong defenses that know each other so well, it’s the team that scores touchdowns instead of settling for field goals that gets the win.

Texas Longhorns at Baylor Bears (-14, 73)

Tall totals are nothing new for Big 12 bettors. Baylor has forced books to post numbers above 70 points all season and draw another massive Over/Under in this season finale with the Longhorns.

The Bears, however, haven’t eclipsed those piles of points with ease, going 2-3-1 O/U in the six games with totals in the 70s or higher. Texas, the other side of this total, has been one of the best Under bets since October, posting a 1-5 O/U count in its last six outings.

The Longhorns don’t have the firepower to trade blows with the Bears, so they’ll lean on their defense to get the job done. Texas has a quick-strike stop unit and formidable pass rush that has collected 35 sacks – tied for 10th in the land – including nine QB kills in a blowout win over Texas Tech last weekend.

The Longhorns can also hold the fort on the ground, something that Oklahoma State successfully did in its win over BU. Baylor was limited to only 2.6 yards per carry on 36 run attempts, totaling 94 rushing yards versus the Cowboys. That was a massive drop off from the Bears' season average of 5.52 yards per carry.

Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Michigan State Spartans (+5.5, 51.5)

The Buckeyes are like the disillusioned boyfriend not giving up on the hot girl who cheated on him and tossed him to the curb like yesterday’s recycling.

Ohio State, despite its unblemished record and current No. 2 spot in the BCS, could still get left out in the rain holding a bouquet of soggy flowers when it comes time to name the two contenders for the national title.

The Buckeyes’ weak schedule and even weaker performance versus Michigan Saturday may have the Bowl Championship Series seeking out a sexy one-loss SEC school to play Florida State in Pasadena. And if that doesn’t do it, a loss to Michigan State in the Big Ten title game will.

The Buckeyes are somehow 5.5-point favorites versus MSU at Lucas Oil Stadium Saturday, a spread that looks even weirder when you consider Ohio State is 0-3 ATS in its last three and was 17-point chalk versus the Wolverines, needing a botched two-point conversion to win the game.

The Spartans took that same Michigan team to the woodshed for a 29-6 waxing as 4-point favorites in Week 10. Michigan State’s defense is a beast of a unit, allowing just 11.8 points on 237.3 yards per game - tops in the country – and is a completely different animal than anything OSU has faced in recent weeks.

College football line watch: Buckeyes backers should be patient

Spread to bet now

Stanford Cardinal at Arizona State Sun Devils (-3)

The current pointspread sits on the key number of 3, but early indications hint that the Sun Devils will be moving up to -3.5 shortly.

This is a revenge game for Arizona State, as the Sun Devils got blown out 42-28 at Stanford in Week 3. The Cardinal laid 6.5 points in that game but Arizona State is a completely different team at home. The Sun Devils are a perfect 7-0 SU and 5-2 ATS.

Bettors like those angles so they will be eager to bet the Sun Devils in this game, especially since they are only laying a field goal. Stanford’s two losses have come on the road, which will also entice bettors to take Arizona State.

Public bettors also like to take the high-scoring offensive teams, especially when they are matched up with the low-scoring, defensive teams. That’s the case here, so we expect the money to come in on Arizona State, ultimately moving this number higher than three.

Spread to wait on

Ohio State Buckeyes (-5.5) vs. Michigan State Spartans

The media and bettors alike are quite skeptical of Ohio State and its undefeated 12-0 record. The Buckeyes’ close 42-41 win at Michigan last weekend only enhanced their negative perception. Ohio State is on a 0-3 ATS slide and is just 2-4 ATS its last six ballgames.

Early money has already come in on Michigan State, with the game opening at MSU +6.5 and quickly getting bet down to the current 5.5-point spread. The public will also back the Spartans, especially since they are 4-1 ATS over their last five games and their only loss this season came by just four points.

If you like Ohio State – wait. A better number will be available as the week goes on.

Total to watch

Oklahoma Sooners at Oklahoma State Cowboys (58)

The Bedlam Series has a history of alternating results in recent years. The Sooners and Cowboys played a high-scoring 99-point game last season after a 54-point game the year before. There were 88 points in 2010 and only 27 points in 2009.

Oklahoma State has the reputation as a high-powered offense under head coach Mike Gundy. But the Cowboys’ strength this season has been their defense. They’ve held six opponents to 13 points or less and they’ve limited opponents to just 4.8 yards per play and 6.2 yards per pass attempt.

Oklahoma’s defense only allows 4.9 yards per play and 6.3 yards per pass attempt. The Sooners’ offense has also had inconsistent quarterback play, resulting in some lower-scoring games.

The total came out at a surprising low 58, so it seems that the oddsmakers have finally caught on to Oklahoma State’s profile.

Beyond the BCS: Big profits from NCAAF small conferences

Team to watch: Rice Owls (9-3 SU, 7-5 ATS)

This week: +4.5 at Marshall

Marshall has won five in a row by an average of 34 points and it has scored at least 45 points in each of its last six contests, but not all has gone perfectly for the Thundering Herd heading into this week’s Conference USA Championship at Rice.

Because the two teams have the same 7-1 record in C-USA action, the expanded BCS rankings (neither team is in the Top 25) determined which school would host and Rice came out just ahead. The Thundering Herd will also be without sophomore running back Kevin Grooms, who was suspended indefinitely after being arrested on misdemeanor domestic battery charges following last Friday’s 59-28 win over East Carolina.

They still boast a stellar ground attack with Essray Taliaferro and Steward Butler, but Grooms had 503 rushing yards and six touchdowns this season and he scored four times in last year’s double-overtime win over Rice.

The Owls are 5-1 (3-3 ATS) at home in 2013. Marshall is a vastly different team home and away. It is 3-3 (1-5 ATS) on the road compared to 6-0 (6-0 ATS) at home.

Team to beware: Utah State Aggies (8-4 SU, 8-4 ATS)

This week: (+3.5) at Fresno State

Utah State need not apologize for playing in the Mountain West Championship, but it didn’t have to face the top two teams from the West Division (Fresno State and San Diego State, which dealt Boise State its two conference losses).

The Aggies have lost five offensive starters over the course of the season -most recently receiver Travis Reynolds, who is questionable due to a knee injury. Despite missing last week’s win over Wyoming, Reynolds has 51 receptions for 832 yards and four touchdowns.

Fresno State saw its BCS hopes busted by San Jose State last Friday, but its 12-game home winning streak is still intact. The Bulldogs have not lost in Fresno since an Oct. 1, 2011 contest against Mississippi.

Total team: South Alabama Jaguars (5-6 SU, 4-7 O/U)

This week: (58) vs. UL Lafayette

Don’t expect the Ragin’ Cajuns to call off the dogs on their defense that ranks second in scoring and second against the run in the Sun Belt when they face South Alabama. Louisiana-Lafayette has already accepted a bid to the New Orleans Bowl, but an outright conference title is still on the line.

The Jaguars were all over the backfield in last weekend’s 38-17 rout of Georgia State, recording four sacks and eight tackles for loss. Saturday’s game is still a decent way off, but the current forecast calls for rain and wind throughout the entire weekend in Mobile.

The under is 4-0 in South Alabama’s last four overall and 4-1 in its last five at home. The under is 3-0 in ULL’s last three road trips.

Heading into the second month of the NBA season, it’s no surprise that the injury bug has begun to bite. From Derrick Rose to the most recent injury of Anthony Davis, injuries have been a huge talking point. Here is a look at five injuries affecting betting lines this December.

Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls

Worth to spread: 3 to 4 points

Rose was on the track to lift the Bulls to their highest level since the Jordan era in the Windy City, prior to multiple knee injuries. With Rose struggling to start the season, before tearing his meniscus, the Bulls were coming up short against the spread, going 5-6 ATS. Since Rose was ruled out for the year, Chicago is just 1-4 ATS. Expect more struggles and less respect from linemakers in December, Something that might increase value.

Anthony Davis, New Orleans Pelicans

Worth to spread: 1 to 2 points

The recent loss of Anthony Davis may just have as big of an effect as any big-name loss of the NBA season. The rebuilding Pelicans will miss Davis due to their lack of veteran replacements to step in place of the 2012 top draft pick. New Orleans is currently 7-9-1 ATS but, at 9-8 overall and sinking fast in the West, there is value in picking against the Pelicans this month. A triple OT win against the Bulls Monday may give the Pelicans hope without Davis, however.

Deron Williams, Brooklyn Nets

Worth to spread: 2 to 3 points

Like the Bulls, the Brooklyn Nets are a team that has whimpered out of the gate while missing their point guard, going just 3-5 ATS with Williams nursing an ankle injury. Brooklyn is 5-12 SU and is only slightly better ATS at 6-11. Most of the Nets’problems stem from new faces and a first-year coach Jason Kidd. On a team loaded with veteran talent, the Nets could be turning things around sooner than later. Brooklyn is a 4.5-point underdog against Denver at home Wednesday.

Marc Gasol, Memphis Grizzlies

Worth to the spread: 1 to 1.5 points

The Spanish post presence has been the cornerstone of the Grizzlies for the past couple of seasons and without him the Grizzlies have been struggling, going 1-3 ATS since Gasol went down with a sprained knee. Starting the season 5-10-1 ATS, the Grizzlies are still 8-8 in the win/loss column. Once the lines start to adjust for the absence of Gasol, expect that ATS record to improve.

Tyson Chandler, New York Knicks

Worth to the spread: 1 to 1.5 points

Tyson Chandler is nearing a return from his early-season leg injury – and just in time. Things have fallen apart for the Knicks without their center. With Andrea Bargnani having to play serious minutes in Chandler's absence, New York is just 3-13 SU and 4-12 ATS. However, things weren’t great even with the Knicks’ shot blocker in the paint, with N.Y. going just 1-3 ATS before Chandler’s injury. Bettors would be wise to stay away from the Knicks at all cost, or at least until Chandler is 100 percent healthy.

Valparaiso lost four of last six D-I games, losing to Mercer in 3OTs last week; Crusaders are 0-3 on road, losing by 12-4-8 to Illinois/Evansville and Ohio. Valpo is turning ball over 21% of time. Ball State lost its last three games, by 1-19-23 points; they're turning ball over 22.3% of time. Horizon favorites are 8-10, 1-1 on road. MAC underdogs are 15-14.

Richmond is 6-2, winning at Air Force in only true road game; they lost by 10 to North Carolina on a neutral floor, by 15 to Minnesota at home. Spiders beat Wm & Mary last three years by 8-31-24 points, but took two OTs to win LY's game, after being down 3 in last minute. W&M is 4-3, won last three games, but hasn't beaten anyone ranked above #200.

First road game for Maryland team that won last four games and is 2-1 on neutral floors, losing by point to UConn; Terps are going to be in the Big Dozen next year- they're making 40% behind arc, just 60.4% inside it. Ohio State is 6-0 with all six wins by 10+, including 17-point win vs Marquette; Buckeyes force turnovers 24.9% of time, hold teams to 25% outside the arc. Very good defensive team.

Wisconsin is 8-0, beating Saint Louis/West Va in Cancun last week, two solid neutral court wins; Badgers are making 43.6% from arc, and that is when Ryan''s teams are best- they find open men on arc. Virginia plays an even more deliberate style; they're 7-1, splitting pair of 3-point tilts with top 50 teams, but are turning ball over 21.3% of time, not good.

South Florida scored 63.5 ppg in losing last two games, after 4-0 start vs teams ranked #237 or worse; Bulls won by 14 at Bowling Green in only road game so far. George Mason is 5-2, with three wins by 7 points or less; Patriots are turning ball over 22.9% of time, making just 30.9% on arc. A-13 home favorites are 8-11 vs spread. AAC road dogs are 2-4.

Harvard won Alaskan Shootout late Saturday night; they lost by 8 at Colorado in only true road game. Crimson holds teams to 26.7% from arc, forces turnovers 21.9% of time. Northeastern upset Georgetown on neutral floor but is still just 2-5, losing last three games, all vs teams in top 80. Like Harvard, but with all the travel, this could be tough spot.

NC State is 4-2 but down this year, hurt by early defections; best win so far was #164 E. Kentucky; Wolfpack is making just 27.6% on arc, 62% on foul line. Northwestern lost by 11-16 in two games in Vegas over the weekend; Wildcats are 4-4, 1-1 in true road games, losing at Stanford by 13, winning at UIC. ACC was 4-2 vs Big Dozen in last night's games.

Temple hasn't played in 10 days; they won last two games after starting 1-3; Owls lost four starters from LY, when they lost 70-69 to St Joe's, after leading by 9 with 5:32 left, snapping 4-game series winning streak. Hawks are 4-2 after winning two of three in Orlando- they gave up 82.5 ppg in their two losses, are making 40.2% of shots behind the arc.

North Carolina gets only 13% of points behind arc, 2nd-lowest in USA; they're shooting 60.5% from line, #331 in nation, but they won by 9 vs Louisville on neutral court, in between losses to Belmont/UAB. Erratic teams are good to avoid. Michigan State is 7-0 with three top 100 wins; they assist on 67.8% of made hoops, 2nd-best ratio for that in country.

Purdue is 6-2 but hasn't beaten anyone good, losing two of three down in Florida- they trailed by 13 at half to Siena in game they won. Boilers are playing faster, subbing more; they're #7 in country in bench minutes, so thats a change for them. Boston College is 3-4 with three losses by 4 or less points- they won three of last four games and upset Washington.

Miami's last four games were all decided by 5 or less points, or in OT- they had good Fullerton tourney, blowing OT game to GW, then coming back to beat Fullerton/Arizona State in next two games. Hurricanes are playing 2nd-slowest pace in country as they rebuild. Nebraska is 5-2, giving up 96-87 points in its losses; best win was over #149 Georgia.

Pepperdine is 4-3 vs D-I teams, with four games decided by six points or less; they've turned ball over 21.5% of time, while forcing a TO only 11.5% of time, 4th-worst rate in US. Fullerton lost last five games; they scored 53.3 ppg in losing three tourney games last weekend- Titans are 2-3 vs teams ranked below #200, shooting just 65.2% on foul line.

2-5 Davidson is well-coached but overscheduled; four of their losses are vs teams in top 50. Wildcats lost to local rival Charlotte by 23-4 points last two years, losing 73-69 LY in game they led by 8 late in first half. Charlotte is 6-1 and was up 14 with 6:01 left in loss; 49ers have risen 50 spots in rankings since season started- they beat K-State/Michigan.

Maryland Terrapins at Ohio State Buckeyes (-10)

Ohio State passed every test in November and looks to continue raising its game when talented Maryland visits on Wednesday as part of the Big Ten/ACC challenge. The third-ranked Buckeyes won six games by an average of 21.2, including a 17-point triumph at Marquette, with a balanced offense. Maryland, which returns several players from last season's 25-win team, dropped a one-point decision to No. 14 Connecticut and suffered a home loss to Oregon State before winning its last four.

Senior point guard Aaron Craft will be a key as Ohio State meets the Terrapins for the first time since 1985. Craft, who owns the school’s all-time steals record and is 18 shy of becoming the Buckeyes’ top assist man, will be tested by a defense that allowed 32.3 shooting the last four games. Michigan transfer Evan Smotrycz has recorded a double-double in his last two games for Maryland and will play Ohio State for the seventh time.

Wisconsin Badgers at Virginia Cavaliers (-3.5)

Wisconsin may not have the most talented team in the country, but the ninth-ranked Badgers are proving that a little bit of chemistry can go a long way. Off to their best start in 20 years, the Badgers look to extend their undefeated run when they visit Virginia in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Wednesday. "We get along off the court really well. We're all best friends," said junior guard Josh Gasser. "When we're on the court, it's just fun for us. We're playing together and when you've got a group of unselfish guys who really want to win - and have common goals - good things can happen."

Wisconsin already has a strong resume that includes victories over Florida, Notre Dame, St. Louis and West Virginia. A win over Virginia would be another notch in the Badgers' belt, as the Cavaliers enter this matchup on a six-game winning streak and sporting a defense that has allowed fewer than 60 points six times in eight games. Virginia won the Corpus Christi Challenge with an 83-63 victory over Missouri State on Saturday despite trailing 11-3 early on, prompting coach Tony Bennett to comment afterward, "I thought we responded after a very sluggish start."

Northwestern Wildcats at North Carolina State Wolfpack (-8.5)

Northwestern could be without one of its best players Wednesday night when the Wildcats visit North Carolina State as part of the Big Ten-ACC Challenge. Drew Crawford, a fifth year-swingman, sat out Saturday’s loss to UCLA with a sore back and then missed Sunday’s workout. Crawford, second on the team in scoring at 14.3 points and tops in rebounding at 6.9, reportedly had a sore back heading into the Las Vegas Invitational and then felt a sharp pain while diving for a loose ball in Thursday’s loss to Missouri, limiting him to two points in 13 minutes on 1-for-6 shooting and then forcing him out of Saturday’s game.

The area the Wildcats could be hurting the most if Crawford is unable to play is rebounding. Jordan Vandenberg, a 7-1 center from Australia, missed the first four North Carolina State games with a sprained ankle, but has totaled 21 points and 18 rebounds in the two games since his return. Then there’s T.J. Warren, a 6-foot-8 forward for the Wolfpack who’s averaging 22.7 points and 7.3 rebounds following back-to-back 30-point games with a combined 20 rebounds.

North Carolina Tar Heels at Michigan State Spartans (-9)

Michigan State will begin its third week as the top-ranked team in the nation when it hosts No. 25 North Carolina on Wednesday night as part of the Big Ten-ACC Challenge. The Tar Heels already have one victory over a top five opponent this season, knocking off then-No. 2 Louisville on Nov. 24 to end its school-record 21-game winning streak, but they suffered their second major upset this season when they were defeated Sunday at Alabama-Birmingham, dropping nine spots in this week’s rankings, the biggest movement of any team in the top 25.

The Spartans played without leading scorer Gary Harris in their blowout victory Friday against Mount St. Mary’s as he rested a sore ankle, but the 6-foor-4 guard is expected to play against North Carolina. Michigan State coach Tom Izzo also sent a message by keeping Keith Appling, Adreian Payne and Branden Dawson out of the starting lineup because they showed up late to a class. Travis Trice and Denzel Valentine took advantage of the extra playing time and scored 15 points apiece, but they’ll likely be back in their reserve roles against the Tar Heels.

Boston College Eagles at Purdue Boilermakers (Pick)

Matt Painter hopes to see more consistency from his Purdue Boilermakers when they host Boston College on Wednesday for the Big Ten-ACC Challenge. "I've never been with a team that can show such promise against quality opponents and then in the other half lose their focus," Painter said in his Tuesday teleconference. "It is a positive that ... you show that you can be successful. It's also a negative in terms of when things don't go your way, you're not able to right the ship and show more consistency." The Boilermakers have alternated good and bad halves during a 1-2 stretch while the Eagles enter the game with back-to-back wins.

Purdue has won four straight games in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge, matching Illinois for the longest active win streak. The Boilermakers are 6-6 overall in the event while Boston College is 6-1, its only loss to Penn State in 2011. The Eagles are 0-2 all-time against Purdue but haven't played the Boilermakers since 2008.

Miami Hurricanes at Nebraska Cornhuskers (-4.5)

Two teams beginning to adjust after a big turnover on their rosters meet when Miami (Fla.) visits Nebraska on Wednesday as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Nebraska has five newcomers in its regular rotation and won its last two games after losing to unbeaten Massachusetts and Alabama-Birmingham, who defeated North Carolina recently. The Hurricanes return one player that averaged more than two points and come in off two victories, including an impressive effort against Arizona State.

Coach Jim Larranaga called Miami’s performance against Arizona State in a 60-57 win Sunday the best it has put forth on both ends of the court. Rion Brown leads the balanced Hurricanes in scoring (12.4) and Miami will have to continue its improvement on the other end against a capable Nebraska offense. The Cornhuskers boast three players scoring at least 12 points per game and averaged 36.4 off the bench the last five games.
