          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Blues at Stars: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Blues at Dallas Stars (-101, 5.5)

The Dallas Stars look to continue their success at home on Sunday, when they host the St. Louis Blues. Dallas, which opened its five-game homestand with a 4-1 triumph over Nashville on Friday, plays 12 of its next 17 contests in the Lone Star State. American Airlines Center has been a friendly place for the Stars, who have won three straight there and are 4-0-1 in their last five overall games.

"These (games) are very important," captain Jamie Benn said. "We've done a pretty good job on the road, and now we've got to take care of this schedule with a lot of home games coming up." St. Louis overcame three two-goal deficits on Saturday before defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk scored the decisive tally in the fifth round of the shootout for a 6-5 victory over Chicago. The victory came just hours after leading scorer Alex Steen was placed on injured reserve with a concussion.

TV: 6 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE BLUES (25-7-5): Jaden Schwartz scored in his fourth straight contest and secured his 17th point in 16 games (nine goals, eight assists). Vladimir Tarasenko collected a goal and two assists as he was one of six different St. Louis players to score in a 6-1 victory over Dallas on Nov. 23. Brian Elliott made 34 saves in that contest and could draw another start versus the Stars.

ABOUT THE STARS (19-12-6): Kari Lehtonen was blitzed for five goals on 18 shots before making an early exit in his last encounter with St. Louis. The 30-year-old Finn, however, traditionally has fared well versus the Blues - posting an 8-4-0 mark with a slim 1.92 goals-against average. Erik Cole tallied twice versus Nashville but has just one goal in 14 career contests against St. Louis.

          TRENDS:

          * Blues are 6-1 in the last seven meetings.
          * Under is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings in Dallas.
          * Blues are 1-6 in their last seven Sunday games.
          * Under is 4-1 in Stars last five overall.

          OVERTIME:

          1. St. Louis owns an impressive 11-0-1 mark against its Central Division rivals.

          2. Dallas D Brenden Dillon scored his team's lone goal versus the Blues but has yet to tally again this season.

          3. The Blues have scored a power-play goal in three straight games, while the Stars have killed off 11 straight short-handed situations in their last four contests.

Pucking the Trends: NHL's weekly betting news and notes
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Dec. 22 to 28.

              Hot team

              Anaheim Ducks (2-0 SU)

Stop us if you've heard this one before. The Ducks have been the class of the NHL for the past month, winning 10 games in a row and earning points in 13 straight. The holiday break limited Anaheim to just two games over a seven-day stretch, but it made good by earning 3-2 victories over the Washington Capitals and Phoenix Coyotes. The Ducks will face their most difficult test in a while this week, taking on the San Jose Sharks in a pivotal home-and-home series, while the week ends with a home game against lowly Edmonton.

              Cold team

              Minnesota Wild (0-3 SU)

A hot start to the season has been vaporized by a terrible five-week stretch that has seen Minnesota go just 5-10-1 while losing their starting goaltender (Josh Harding) and top goal-scoring option (Zach Parise) along the way. The Wild played three road games last week, and struggled in each of them - dropping consecutive 4-1 decisions to the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers before losing a 6-4 slugfest in Winnipeg. The coming week offers some relief - home games against the Islanders and Sabres should help - but a game against St. Louis on New Year's Eve will be a big test.

              Best Over play

              Chicago Blackhawks (3-0 O/U)

Chicago betrayed bettors the week prior to the holiday break, playing three straight Unders after boasting one of the best O/U records in the league to that point. So how did the Blackhawks respond? With vigor, of course. The league-leading Chicago offense reeled off 18 goals in three games this week, earning one-sided victories over the New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche before being bested in a shootout by St. Louis. Expect a tighter game Monday against Los Angeles, but road dates against the Isles and Devils could bear more Over fruit.

              Best Under play

              New York Rangers (0-2 O/U)

The Rangers were the anti-Blackhawks this week, following up a 4-0-2 Over stretch with consecutive Under plays in a 2-1 shootout win over the Toronto Maple Leafs and a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Washington Capitals. The scoring just hasn't been there for New York, which comes into the start of the week ranked 27th in the league in goals (2.3) despite a power-play ranked 11th (18.9 percent). This week could be a difficult one for the Rangers, who face four-straight road games against Tampa Bay, Florida, Pittsburgh and Toronto.

              Surveying the schedule

It's called a holiday break, but few teams enjoyed much of a rest period due to the condensed NHL schedule. The Vancouver Canucks were one of the lucky ones, with a full seven days between their previous game against the Winnipeg Jets and Sunday's showdown with the Calgary Flames. The Canucks will make up for it in a big way, playing five times over an eight-day stretch coming out of the break - following up their game in Calgary with a mini-homestand against Philadelphia and Tampa Bay and games in Los Angeles and Anaheim.

                          • NHL Winter Classic: What bettors need to know

Toronto Maple Leafs at Detroit Red Wings (-125, 5)

The "Big House" will be filled to the brim on New Year's Day as the Detroit Red Wings host the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL's Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium. With an expected record crowd in upwards of 106,000 at the outdoor stadium, the sputtering Original Six foes will likely have a snowy backdrop to the latest installment of their long-standing rivalry. The same stadium also witnessed the highest recorded attendance in ice hockey history when 104,173 people watched as Michigan cruised to a 5-0 triumph over rival Michigan State on Dec. 11, 2010.

While many are coming to see a show, both Eastern Conference representatives have struggled as of late - Toronto has lost seven of its last 11 (4-5-2) while Detroit has dropped eight in that span (3-6-2). Despite his team's struggles, Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf has every reason to smile after signing a seven-year contract extension worth $49 million on Tuesday. "It was an easy decision for me to stay here and be a part of the Toronto Maple Leafs," the 28-year-old defenseman said with wife/actress Elisha Cuthbert in tow. "I think we're building something special."

TV: 1 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, RDS

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (20-16-5): Phil Kessel scored twice to reach the 20-goal plateau for the sixth straight season as Toronto skated to a 5-2 victory over reeling Carolina on Sunday. The 26-year-old Wisconsin native has recorded back-to-back multi-point performances and collected four goals and four assists in seven career contests versus Detroit. Phaneuf, who scored against the Hurricanes, also tallied in Toronto's 5-4 shootout loss to Detroit on Dec. 21.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (18-14-9): While Canada and the European nations will wait until Jan. 7 to announce their Olympic rosters, the United States will do so immediately following the Winter Classic. Although the Detroit Free Press already reported that Jimmy Howard will join Los Angeles' Jonathan Quick and Buffalo's Ryan Miller as goaltenders for Team USA, the Detroit netminder officially will learn his fate mere moments after the contest. Russian star Pavel Datsyuk scored in the first meeting versus the Maple Leafs and also tallied in a 6-4 loss to Nashville on Monday.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Over is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings.

NHL Winter Classic: What bettors need to know
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There have been seven outdoor NHL games - five Winter Classic games and two Heritage Classic games - producing a 2-5 Over/Under record. The Winter Classic games have gone 1-4 O/U with the most recent outdoor venue producing a 3-2 win for the New York Rangers over the Philadelphia Flyers at Citizens Bank Park on Jan. 2, 2012.

WEATHER: The forecast in Ann Arbor is calling for snow showers starting before gametime and continuing all day with temperatures in a mid teens and winds blowing NE at 10 mph.
