Blues at Blackhawks: What bettors need to know
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Blues at Chicago Blackhawks (-110, 5.5)

Positioned in the catbird seat for their second Presidents' Trophy in franchise history, the St. Louis Blues are looking to strengthen their spot atop the Central Division. The league-leading Blues have dominated their division mates this season (20-0-2) and vie for their fourth consecutive overall victory on Wednesday when they visit the rival Chicago Blackhawks. St. Louis bested another Central Division representative in its last outing, posting a 3-1 triumph over Winnipeg on Monday for its eighth win in nine games (8-0-1).

The Blues have defeated the Blackhawks in all three meetings this season, with two venturing into a shootout. Chicago squandered an early two-goal lead on Tuesday and stumbled to its third setback in four outings with a 3-2 overtime loss to Philadelphia. When asked if the Blackhawks can overcome their eight-point deficit and catch the Blues, coach Joel Quenneville said, "We can chip away, but it's not looking so hot right now."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports

ABOUT THE BLUES (47-14-7): Ryan Miller has adjusted quite nicely from going from the NHL's version of the outhouse (Buffalo) to the penthouse (St. Louis). The United States Olympian improved to 7-0-1 with his new team after making 16 saves against the Jets, but has split four career decisions versus Chicago (2-2-0, 2.03 goals-against average). Captain David Backes scored twice against the Jets to extend his point streak to three games (two goals, two assists).

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (39-15-15): Jonathan Toews continued his offensive tear by notching an assist on defenseman Duncan Keith's goal on Tuesday. The captain has collected 10 points (eight goals, two assists) in his last eight games and has flustered the Blues throughout his career. Toews has recorded 32 points (12 goals, 20 assists) in 35 games versus the Central Division rival, including two-point performances in both a 3-2 loss on Oct. 9 and 6-5 setback on Dec. 28.

      TRENDS:

      * Blues are 4-0 in the last four meetings.
      * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
      * Blues are 7-1 in their last eight vs. Western Conference.
      * Blackhawks are 0-7 in their last seven vs. Central.

      OVERTIME:

      1. Chicago LW Brandon Saad missed his first game of the season on Tuesday with an upper-body injury. He is questionable for Wednesday's tilt.

      2. St. Louis C T.J. Oshie is expected to return after missing one game to attend the birth of daughter Lyla Grace.

      3. Quenneville has 699 coaching victories under his belt.

Kane is expected to miss the next two-to-three weeks after suffering a left knee injury during a game on March 19th against the Blues.

Leafs' Ranger carted off, taken to hospital

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Paul Ranger, who was hit from behind with an elbow by Tampa Bay Lighting forward Alex Killorn, was carted off on a stretcher during Wednesday night's game.

Ranger was taken to a local hospital for precautionary assessment, the team said. He is stable, conscious and alert.

With four seconds remaining in the first period, Ranger turned at the last second prior to the hit from Killorn. Ranger remained down on the ice for several minutes.

Killorn was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for boarding.

With both the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks only trailing first in the league by four points, Thursday's match-up will be huge.

The Wild have an O/U record of 1-4-3 in their past eight Thursday games, while the Devils are 2-9-5 in their last 16. In their only meeting this year, the Devils and Wild carried a puckline of 5 and scored four.

The Wild and Devils opening puckline is 5 for Thursdays game.

Lightning have been having problems with Senators

The Tampa Bay Lightning have never been able to find much success against the Ottawa Senators. In the past 65 meetings between the Lightning and Sens, Tampa Bay carries an 18-45-2 record.

Most of those 18 wins have come in Tampa Bay for the Lightning. Tampa Bay has an abysmal 5-27 in the past 32 at the Canadian Tire Centre (formerly Scotiabank Place), including a 5-3 loss earlier this season.

Both the Lightning and Senators opened at -104 for their game Thursday.

Blue Jackets have always been awful on the road

The Columbus Blue Jackets have never really gained traction in the NHL, placing over 13th in the West three times. Since their inception in 2000-01 the Blue Jackets have a 38.5 winning percentage and that gets even worse on the road.

The Blue Jackets are a lifetime 157-338-15 (30.8 W%) on the road, and 79-200-8 (27.5 W%) while visiting a team with a winning home record.

Columbus (+127) is going to have a difficult time reversing that trend when they visit Montreal (-138) Thursday.

Rangers, the best road team in NHL, travel to Columbus

The New York Rangers are an NHL best 21-13-0 on the road this season. After starting a mediocre 2-6, the Rangers caught fire away from Madison Square Garden sporting a 19-7 record.

The Rangers will square-off against the Blue Jackets, who have been mediocre at home this season. Columbus sports a middle-of-the-road 19-12-1-2 home record, but have dropped their past two in Nationwide Arena.

New York is only slight favored (-102) to continue their hot road record against Columbus (-106) Friday.

Bruins put 10-game winning streak on the line Friday

The Boston Bruins have easily been the hottest bet in the National Hockey League and will look to extend their impressive win streak to 11 games Friday.

The on No. 10 on the road at the New Jersey Devils and now their travels will take them to Denver where they'll face the Colorado Avalanche.

During the streak, the Bruins have outscored opponents 40-15 with Jarome Iginla getting especially hot. The veteran has tallied nine goals and three assists during the previous 10 games.

The Bruins are currently -109 road dogs at Colorado Friday evening.

Take the home team when Flames/Predators clash

Both may be near the bottom of the standings, but bettors can find value when the Calgary Flames and Nashville Predators meet.

In the last eight meetings between the two teams, the home team has one every game. The Predators losing skid in Calgary goes beyond that eight game span as they are 1-5 in their last six in Calgary.

Calgary (-114), who have won three of their past four, will host Nashville (+105), losers of three straight, Friday.
