    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Most popular, least popular picks in the LVH Super Contest, where 1,034 contestants pick five games each week of the NFL season........they paid $1,500 each to be in this contest, by the way.

    Most pop. (26-49-3 vs spread)

    1) Bills 255 - L
    2) Buccaneers 247 - L
    3) Broncos 231 - W
    4) Seahawks 228
    5) Jets 212 - L
    6) Eagles 211 - T

    Least popular (39-37-2)

    32) Falcons 62 - W
    31) Browns 64 - L
    30) 49ers 76 - W
    28) Panthers 100 - W
    T25) Redskins 112 - L
    T25) Vikings 112 - W

    *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday........

    13) Colts 22, Titans 14-- Indy finally led a game at halftime; they took ball away four times (+3) overcoming Titans' 83-yard advantage in total yards. It is not a good sign when you score one TD and kick five FGs, but Colts won and basically clinched their division, but its a weak division.

    12) Broncos 35, Chiefs 28-- Andy Reid has gotten a lot out of these Chiefs, but they're not as good as Denver, who basically have 1.5-game lead in their division. Broncos averaged 11.5 yards per pass attempt, had 403 yards thru the air, converted 8-14 on third down.

    11) Jaguars 32, Browns 28-- Jax won three of last four games after 0-8 start, so credit to Gus Bradley for keeping his team afloat. Weeden passed for 370 yards and three TDs, but Cleveland still hasn't won one of his starts.

    10) Panthers 27, Buccaneers 6-- Carolina has won eight games in row (7-1 vs spread); they outgained Bucs 426-206- now they face the Saints in two of next three games, with NFC South at stake.

    9) Vikings 23, Bears 20 OT-- There was a taunting penalty called on Bears that gave Minnesota a first down in red zone with about 5:00 left. This was as close to blatant cheating by an official as I've seen; players were yapping for three hours, and you call taunting in a 20-17 game with 5:00 left? Vikings threw an INT couple plays later, but still......

    8) Eagles 24, Cardinals 21-- Arizona was -3 in turnovers, converted 4-12 on 3rd down, was -17 in field position, and lost by a FG. Eagles have won four games in a row; was impressed by both teams here.

    7) Sunday college basketball scores of note:
-- Wichita State 70, Saint Louis 65- Nice road win for Shockers.
-- Fairleigh Dickinson 58, Seton Hall 54-- FDU also beat Rutgers; does that make them state champs of New Jersey?
-- UAB 63, North Carolina 59-- Tar Heels were 1-12 from arc, 4-11 on line. UAB was 22-28 on the line.
-- San Diego State 67, Marquette 59-- Steve Fisher has been with Aztecs for 13 years; they were horrible before he got there. Top 25 program now.
-- Miami 60, Arizona State 57-- Scores like this matter on Selection Sunday.
-- LSU 70, Butler 68, OT-- Pair of 2-point losses in Orlando for Bulldogs.
-- Purdue 68, Siena 63-- Saints were up 13 at the half.

    6) Dolphins 23, Jets 3-- Geno Smith is quickly becoming more suspect than prospect; total yardage was 453-177 and Jets had only 78 passing yards, as the immortal Matt Simms (non-starter in college) played the second half. You have to give Miami coaches credit; they're 6-6 amidst incredible chaos.

    5) Falcons 34, Bills 31 OT-- Ronde Barber is brutal on TV; Falcons had 3rd-and goal in red zone at 2:00 warning, trailing 31-24; Barber's analysis was that if Atlanta didn't make it on 3rd down, they should go for it on 4th down. Ya think??? Sometimes its just better to say nothing.

    4) 49ers 23, Rams 13-- You cannot beat a good team on road with Clemens at QB, simple as that. he's not good, and the Rams' WRs, except for Austin, are still basically useless. Last seven 49ers wins are all by 10+ points. Jeff Fisher had a lousy game from a management standpoint, passing up an easy FG in a 23-6 game and trying a hideous fake punt inside his own 20.

    3) Patriots 34, Texans 31-- Houston led 17-7 at half, lost for 10th time in a row. Patriots had zero penalties, second time this year they've done that; all season long, Miami in Week 2, Green Bay in Week 9 are only other teams to not have a penalty called against them.

    2) Bengals 17, Chargers 10-- San Diego scored 31 second half points last week at Arrowhead, then laid an egg here on a sunny day at home. Big win for the Bengals, who maintain a two-game lead in the AFC North,.

    1) Giants 24, Redskins 17-- Washington led 14-0 early on, but lost fourth game in row; they're 2-4 at home, with wins 45-41/30-24 OT. Giants are 5-1 in last six games. Who's going to tell Daniel Snyder his lousy team doesn't have their first round draft pick (#2 right now) next spring?

College football odds: Week 15 opening line report

If your heart has recovered from a wild weekend of college football in Week 14, well, have your defibrillator ready, because there are still some big games to come in Week 15. Leading the way are two teams that, before the season, almost no one would have projected to reach the Southeastern Conference championship game: Auburn and Missouri, in a battle of Tigers at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome.

Auburn provided a ridiculously riveting finish to Saturday’s Iron Bowl, returning a field goal for a touchdown in a 34-28 shocker over No. 1 Alabama. This is the same squad that went 3-9 SU and 4-8 ATS last year, including 0-8 SU and 2-6 ATS in the SEC. This year, Auburn is 11-1 SU and is tied for the second-best ATS record in the country at 10-2.

Missouri is also 11-1 SU and fields the No. 1 spread-covering unit in the nation at 10-1-1. The Tigers were 5-7 SU and ATS last year, but they’ve rocketed to the top of the SEC behind quarterback James Franklin and a defense that allows just 19.4 ppg (14th). Mizzou wrapped up the regular season by holding high-octane Texas A&M and QB Johnny Manziel to just 21 points in a 28-21 victory Saturday.

Peter Korner, founder of Nevada-based odds service The Sports Club, says the Crimson Tide being out of the picture makes this contest far more intriguing.

“It turns out to be a great game which will be highly competitive and a real toss-up as to who will win. I think this game is much more interesting now that Alabama is out. With that, the majority of oddsmakers all made this a pick ‘em, and that's what we sent out. Auburn has really turned on the afterburners to be where it is, and Missouri has been strong all year. We'll let the bettors decide this one.”

Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Michigan State Spartans (+6)

The Buckeyes allowed a middling Michigan squad to put up 41 points and come a 2-point conversion away from an upset that would have rivaled Auburn’s shocker over Alabama. But even if the 42-41 win was far tighter than expected, with Ohio State laying 17 points, the Buckeyes (12-0 SU, 6-5-1 ATS) have still won 24 consecutive games SU heading into the Big Ten title game at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis.

The Spartans, meanwhile, grinded out a 14-3 home win Saturday as a 17-point chalk against Minnesota. Michigan State (11-1 SU, 7-4-1 ATS) has won eight in a row (6-2 ATS), holding opponents to 14 points or less six times in that stretch, and five of those foes scored only in single digits. The Spartans have the nation’s No. 1 total defense (273.3 ypg), No. 1 rushing defense (64.4 ypg) and No. 4 scoring defense (11.8 ppg).

“We're all wary that Ohio State has no defense and Michigan State has a top-notch defensive unit,” Korner said. “Our range went from Ohio State -4.5 to -7. We sent out Ohio State -6. Smart money will be on Michigan State, squares will be on the favorite. Hopefully it will balance out and we get good two-way action right where it's at.”

Oklahoma Sooners at Oklahoma State Cowboys (-13)

The host Cowboys are gunning for the Big 12 title and an automatic berth in a BCS bowl, but just playing the archrival Sooners in the Bedlam game is generally motivation enough. If not for a toe-stubbing loss at West Virginia back in September, Oklahoma State (10-1 SU, 8-3 ATS) would be firmly in the hunt for the national championship game. Since that setback, the Pokes have gone 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS, scoring 38 points or more five times and winning by two TDs or more six times.

The Sooners (9-2 SU, 6-5 ATS) won their first five games, then went 4-2 down the stretch to fall out of Big 12 title contention. While Korner and his crew have Oklahoma State a double-digit chalk, he said the Sooners could surely make things interesting.

“We were all actually very close on this one, as the numbers ranged from Oklahoma State -12.5 to -14,” he said. “We sent out -13. We're sure dog players will wait and see how high this can go, but both teams are quality squads, and we don't see much movement – if any – until much later in the week.

“The way this year has ended up, I'm pretty sure that Oklahoma could win outright as the double-digit underdog, so we won't be surprised if the Sooners make this a game.”

Duke Blue Devils vs. Florida State Seminoles (-32)

Duke is yet another surprise team to be hanging around at this point of the year, coming off a 10-2 SU regular season and standing tied for second nationally with a 10-2 ATS record, as well. The Blue Devils are on an 8-0 SU run and have cashed in their last seven games, nabbing four outright wins as an underdog, including Saturday’s 27-25 win at North Carolina as a 5-point pup.

Florida State is steaming toward the BCS national championship game, despite sexual assault allegations swirling around star QB Jameis Winston, though no charges have been brought yet. The Seminoles (12-0 SU) have also been a spread-covering machine at 10-2 ATS, winning by at least 27 points in all but one game, so Korner isn’t expecting much out of the ACC championship tilt in Charlotte, N.C.

“This is a real non-game. Our range went from Florida State -30 to -33, and we sent out -32,” he said. “There’s not much to see here. We expect late-week action to be on the favorite, as usual, so we're ignoring the offshore line moves on Sunday. Moving fast and to a lower number this quickly, this early in the week is a joke. Any sports book that follows this is going to be rooting for Duke come Saturday.”

Rockets at Jazz: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Houston Rockets at Utah Jazz

The Houston Rockets are rolling up points and victories and figure to have a chance to do both once again when they visit the Utah Jazz on Monday. Houston won its fifth straight game with Saturday’s impressive 112-106 victory over San Antonio, marking the fourth time the Rockets have scored 112 or more during their winning streak. Utah has won two of three contests after a 1-14 start and is coming off a 112-104 victory at Phoenix on Saturday.

The Rockets lead the league in scoring at 109.4 points per game while Utah ranks near the bottom at 90.5. Houston overcame a 19-point deficit to post a 104-93 victory in Salt Lake City earlier this season and handed the Jazz their worst home loss in the Utah era last season – 125-80, the fifth-worst beating in franchise history. Rookie point guard Trey Burke has provided the Jazz with a lift since returning from a broken finger and had a season-best 20 points in the win over the Suns.

        TV:
9 p.m. ET, CSN Houston, ROOT (Utah)

        ABOUT THE ROCKETS (13-5):
Star guard James Harden was back on his game with 31 points against the Spurs after having just nine points the previous night against Brooklyn in his return from a foot injury. The ailment had sapped Harden’s explosiveness – leading to a three-game absence – but he moved much better while playing 37 minutes in the intense contest. “I just have to have confidence,” Harden said after the outing in which he knocked down the tying 3-pointer during a game-ending 9-0 run. “Even though I haven’t played and missed a couple games, I have to make sure I get my teammates involved and make sure that when they look at me, they know that we’re ready to win this game.”

        ABOUT THE JAZZ (3-15):
Utah has topped 100 points in consecutive games after reaching the figure just once over its first 16 outings. The improved offense has come under the direction of Burke, who missed the first 12 games and his absence left the Jazz without a bona fide point guard. Veteran forward Marvin Williams also has provided a boost and has scored 14 or more points in six of his last seven appearances despite playing with a broken nose.

        TRENDS:

        * Rockets are 5-0 ATS in their last five games overall.
        * Under is 7-1 in the last eight meetings.
        * Under is 9-1 in Jazz last 10 games following a ATS win.
        * Jazz are 4-0 ATS in their last four vs. NBA Southwest.

        BUZZER BEATERS:

        1. Houston has won the last four meetings and eight of the past 12.

        2. Burke went 4-of-6 from 3-point range on Saturday and is averaging 15.7 points over the past three games.

        3. Rockets C Dwight Howard has scored 15 points or fewer in five consecutive games while averaging 12.4 during the stretch.

Bank shots: NBA's weekly betting news and notes
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Nov. 25 to Dec. 1.

Hottest ATS - Houston Rockets (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS)

The Rockets have definitely kicked it into overdrive after a bit of a bumpy ride to begin the season. They are currently on a five-game winning streak and have won eight of their last nine, including 8-1 against the spread in that time. The Rockets have been a very balanced team scoring the rock with four players scoring at least 15 points per game. More importantly, Dwight Howard has looked more like the Dwight Howard of old, scoring 16.7 points per game to go along with 12.4 boards and 1.9 blocks per game. This week Houston travels to Utah take on the last place Jazz before two games at home against Phoenix and Golden State.

Coldest ATS - Toronto Raptors (0-3 SU, 0-3 ATS)

The Raptors have not been in first place in the Atlantic Division since 2007 and despite losing three games in a row and sitting at 6-10 for the season, that is exactly where they are. This is thanks to the utterly putrid basketball that is being played in the Eastern Conference right now, where only two teams have winning records. The Raptors had a chance this week to take a pseudo-strangle hold on the division, but were only able to go 1-3 in a four game home stand. It doesn't get any easier this week for the Raps as they begin a west coast road trip with stops in Golden State, Phoenix and Los Angeles to take on the Lakers.

Best Over play - Phoenix Suns (2-2 SU, 3-1 O/U)

The Suns are still one of the best teams in the NBA this ATS, but after putting a stop to the Portland Trailblazers torrid winning streak and two contests against the hapless Utah Jazz, the Suns were a great Over play last week. The Suns have become a good over play this season (10-7 O/U overall) by finding good balance on offense and defense. They are in the top half of the league when it comes to scoring at 101.7 points per game and they give up 99.7 points per game. This week, Phoenix heads to Memphis and Houston before taking on Toronto at home.

Best Under play - Charlotte Bobcats (1-3 SU, 1-3 O/U)

Not only are the 8-10 Charlotte soon-to-be-Hornets-again Bobcats, one of the most surprising teams in the NBA this season, but are roaring when it comes to hitting the Under. In addition to hitting the Under three times this week, the Bobcats are 0-9-1 O/U in their past 10 games. The Bobcats have able to accomplish this by being a very good defensive team and a pretty lousy one on offensive. They rank second and fourth in points against per game (91.4) and opposing field goal percentage (42.4) respectively and on offense they are dead last in those categories, scoring 88.6 ppg and shooting 40.7 percent from the floor.

        Surveying the schedule:

The Denver Nuggets have found their groove on the offensive end of the floor during their six game winning streak. The rank in the top 10 in four major categories, including points per game, field goal percentage, 3-point percentage and offensive rebounds. They are currently on game two of a six game East coast road trip, which sees them play six games in nine days. The team during that stretch with the most wins is Washington, who sit at 8-9.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Nov. 25 - Dec. 1.

          Hot team

          Chicago Blackhawks (4-0 SU)

Who else could be here? The Hawks are currently enjoying a six-game winning streak overall (despite playing seven straight on the road) and were 4-0 in the past week. Patrick Kane has returned to his jaw-droppingly-good self. His 12-game point streak was snapped Friday, but he notched a goal and one assist in Saturday's win over the Phoenix Coyotes. They return to home ice Tuesday as they host the Dallas Stars.

          Cold team

          Toronto Maple Leafs (0-4 SU)

Toronto started the season as good as anyone and Leaf Nation was in a flurry of excitement. After a loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Hockey Night in Canada capped off an 0-4 week, that hot start seems like a distant memory. You'd be hard pressed to find a better 1-2 punch than Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk, but it's the goaltending that has let the Leafs down. James Reimer and Jonathan Bernier rotated starts this week, but allowed nine goals each this week.

          Best Over play

          Anaheim Ducks (3-0 O/U)

The Ducks may have dropped two of their three games this week, but they cashed in for Over bettors. Goalie Jonas Hiller gave up eight goals in his two starts this week and has lost four of this last six starts overall. Dustin Penner, Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry continue to be one of the hottest lines in the NHL, thus making the Ducks a solid Over candidate from an offensive standpoint night in, night out. They have a tough week upcoming, hosting the L.A. Kings Tuesday, before hitting the road to face the 'Hawks and St. Louis Blues.

          Best Under play

          New York Islanders (0-3 O/U)

Things are not good for the Isles. Many thought the Islanders would parlay an impressive playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins into a decent 2013-14 season. Not so. New York has dropped six-straight hockey games and are having troubles scoring despite boasting one of the more underrated players in the league, in John Tavares. The team was blanked by the Detroit Red Wings midweek and mustered just four goals in their three games. A feeble power play (16.3 percent) doesn't help matters either. Free Tavares!

          Surveying the schedule

The hype surrounding the Colorado Avalanche may have tapered off a bit in recent weeks, but they still boast one of the best road records in the league at 9-2-0. The Avs, winners of back-to-back games, hit the road to Canada with games at the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Florida at Connecticut: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Gators at Connecticut Huskies (-5, 110)

No. 13 Florida brings a five-game winning streak with it to No. 14 Connecticut on Monday night in a game that has a Sweet 16 kind of feel to it. Maybe that's because the only other time the two national powerhouses met was in the 1994 NCAA Tournament in the Sweet 16. The Gators earned a 69-60 overtime win in that one at Miami Arena en route to their first Final Four.

Connecticut is off to its first 7-0 start since the 2010-11 season. The Huskies have won three neutral-site games by a total of four points, including a 59-58 win over then-No. 22 Indiana in the 2K Sports Classic in Madison Square Garden. The Gators, who come in off a 67-66 victory over in-state rival Florida State on Friday, are 1-1 on the road this season, losing 59-53 at then-No. 19 Wisconsin on Nov. 12.

                    TIME:
                    7 p.m. ET, ESPN2

                    ABOUT FLORIDA (6-1):
The Gators are led by senior forward Casey Prather who is averaging 19.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Michael Frazier II ranks second in scoring (14.4) and has connected on 22-of-41 3-pointers (53.7 percent). Dorian Finney-Smith, a 6-8 transfer from Virginia Tech, is averaging 11.8 points and 8.6 rebounds and hit the game-winning free throw with 1.3 seconds left to defeat Florida State.

                    ABOUT CONNECTICUT (7-0):
Senior guard Shabazz Napier leads the Huskies in scoring (15.0) and rebounding (7.7). The Huskies rank12th nationally in 3-point shooting (44.7 percent) while holding opponents to just 36 percent shooting. Senior swingman Niels Giffey has connected on 15-of-22 3-pointers (68.2).

                    TRENDS:

                    * Gators are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games.
                    * Huskies are 6-2 ATS in their last eight home games.
                    * Under is 8-2 in Gators last 10 games following a ATS loss.
                    * Under is 5-0 in Huskies last five overall.

                    TIP-INS:

                    1. Connecticut has won all four of its home games by double digits.

                    2. Napier became the first UConn player to record two triple-doubles when he got No. 2 in a 80-62 win over Yale on Nov. 13, finishing with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

                    3. Florida is allowing an SEC-low 60.3 points per game.

Drexel was a middling team in the Colonial Athletic Association a season ago, finishing 13-18 overall just one year after posting a 29-7 mark. This year's version of the Dragons more closely resembles the 2011-12 incarnation, off to a blazing start with four impressive victories and narrow losses to No. 4 Arizona and No. 22 UCLA. Drexel has been a bit fortunate where the ATS record is concerned - three of its covers have come by four points or fewer - but with a vastly improved offense led by senior guard Chris Fouch (19.5 ppg), the Dragons should be a tough out for the majority of teams they face.

Wyoming Cowboys (5-2 SU, 6-0 ATS)

The Cowboys have impressed in the early going, with their only losses coming to a challenging Colorado team and No. 7 Oklahoma State. Of course, Wyoming started quickly last season - it won its first 13 games, including a stunning triumph over the then-19th ranked Buffaloes before crumbling apart and settling for a second-round exit in the season-ending CBI tournament. While it's impossible to know if history will repeat itself, the Cowboys have been solid offensively, shooting nearly 50 percent from the field while boasting a balanced attack that sees seven players average 6.9 points or more.

                    Charlotte 49ers (6-1 SU, 5-0 ATS)

Celebrating their first year in Conference USA, the 49ers are the darlings of their new digs after posting one of the biggest upsets of the opening month, sneaking past No. 14 Michigan 63-61 in the championship game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. While this isn't Charlotte's first taste of early-season victory - the Niners won last year's Great Alaska Shootout - it does bode well for a team coming off a disappointing first-round exit at last year's NIT tournament. Balanced scoring - five players average in double figures - and one of the top rebounding rates in the country are working in Charlotte's favor so far.

NFL Week 14 opening line report: Should Jaguars be favorites?

Like dating a fat girl or singing along to Taylor Swift, setting the Jacksonville Jaguars as betting favorites is just something you don’t want to get caught doing.

Sportsbooks are avoiding that pitfall by tabbing the red-hot Jaguars as 2.5-point home underdogs Thursday, hosting the Houston Texans – perhaps the only NFL team worse than Jacksonville at this point.

However, one Las Vegas oddsmaker isn’t afraid to admit that the Jaguars should probably be home favorites over Houston which, despite a valiant effort versus New England Sunday, hasn’t won a game since Week 2.

“I had Jacksonville as a favorite,” admits Peter Korner, founder of the Nevada-based odds service, The Sports Club. “We actually did send this game out as a pick’em, but Jacksonville has won three of their last four. Houston may have played well against New England but they’re not winning. Why would you want to bet on them? Jacksonville has nothing to lose. They’re playing very ‘loosey goosey’ right now.”

The Thursday Night Football spread wasn’t the only line Korner and his team of oddsmakers were torn on in Week 14. The Sports Club’s stable of linemakers also duked it out over the opening line for Oakland at New York and the Monday Night Football spread for Dallas at Chicago.

The Raiders opened as big as 2.5-point road underdogs in New York Sunday afternoon.

“I was the only one who favored Oakland,” says Korner, whose service sent out a suggested opening line of a pick’em. “For three games the Jets have had zero offense and now they’re pulling out quarterbacks and the fans are booing. Oakland is playing well. They aren’t getting blown out and regardless of whether (Matt) McGloin or (Terrellle) Pryor is playing, they’re the better team. I don’t see any momentum that would have money slammed down on the Jets.”

As for the Monday nighter, Korner says it may not matter – at least from a linemaking standpoint – if Bears starting QB Jay Cutler returns from an ankle injury or if backup Josh McCown continues to take snaps against Dallas in Week 14. The Sports Club settled on a suggested spread of Cowboys -2.5 and most books are waiting to hear more on Cutler’s status.

“I don’t think there’s much of a difference. Talent wise there is between Cutler and McCown, but I don’t think (Cutler being active) will cause a huge rush to the windows,” says Korner. “We like the way Dallas is playing right now, going 5-2 in their last seven. They’re playing with a lot of momentum. Cutler in or not, Dallas is the better team and we’d much rather be rooting for them Monday night.”

Kansas City Chiefs at Washington Redskins (+3, 46)

The shine is off the Chiefs, who have dropped three in a row and find themselves as mere field-goal favorites visiting the lowly Redskins in Week 14.

“They’ve lost their luster,” Korner says of the Chiefs’ skid. “They’re back to where they’re supposed to be. This isn’t an all-time great team, especially with Alex Smith at quarterback. He has a track record of trailing off and Kansas City is starting to trail off. But Kansas City is the stronger team. Washington has looked pitiful and (Robert) Griffin is playing hurt and he’s… well let’s just say this ain’t last year.”

Detroit Lions at Philadelphia Eagles (-2.5, 54.5)

Korner says this line is almost a mirror image of the Cardinals-Eagles line from this past Sunday. Arizona may have had the better defense, but Detroit has the better offense this time around, making the process very similar for the oddsmakers.

“It’s basically the same game,” he says. “It should be a close game and the line is pretty much home field. Of course, the total is much higher.”

“We opened 52 and thought about going higher, but now we’re getting into the weather and it looks like it will be cold with possible storms hitting that part of the country," notes Korner.

The Sports Club sent out a suggested opening total of 52 points, however, books opened as large as 54.5 points. The forecast for Philadelphia is calling for temperatures in the mid 30s and a chance of snow.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

                          Letdown spot

The Villanova Wildcats had fun in the sun this past weekend, shocking No. 2 Kansas and edging Iowa in overtime to win the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas. The Wildcats narrowly avoided a massive letdown against the Hawkeyes in the championship game, overcoming a sloppy first half in which they committed 12 of their 19 turnovers. If it wasn’t for James Bell catching fire from beyond the arc, Villanova would have been a one-hit wonder this weekend.

It will be a shock to the system when the Wildcats return home. Not only does the bitter cold of Philadelphia sting extra when you’ve been soaking in the tropical heat but Villanova could come crashing back to earth against two tough opponents this week. The Wildcats face off against Big 5 rivals Penn Wednesday and St. Joseph’s Saturday. Be careful of overinflated Villanova’s bubble bursting this week.

                          Lookahead spot

The Houston Rockets are living up to the preseason hype, jumping out to a 13-5 record and winning five straight games heading into Monday’s matchup with Utah. The Rockets peaked with a 112-106 win over the division-leading Spurs Saturday and can make another huge statement in the Western Conference with a win over Golden State Friday.

But before Houston butts heads with the Warriors, it hosts the NBA’s best bet Wednesday night. The Phoenix Suns bring their 12-4-1 ATS mark (as of Monday) to the Honda Center, coming off a game in Memphis the night before. The Suns have hung tough with the best in the West, covering on the road in Oklahoma City, Denver and San Antonio this year, and enter the week as 8-1 ATS away from home. Phoenix went 2-2 SU and 3-1 ATS in its four meetings with Houston last season.

                          Schedule spot

Some teams see the NFL Thanksgiving games as a burden, throwing a mid-week wrench into a team’s schedule so deep into the season. Others, like the Dallas Cowboys, have learned to cope with the Turkey Day tasks and benefit from them greatly in Week 14 of the season. Since scoring a comeback win over the Raiders last Thursday, the Cowboys will have 10 full days between games before taking the field in Chicago Monday night.

This extended break is huge for Dallas at this point in the season. Not only does the 10-day hiatus act as a mini bye week, giving the coaching staff added time to fine tune its gameplan for Monday, but it also allows the Cowboys to lick their many wounds. Dallas is expected to return top LB Sean Lee from a hamstring injury, and could get CB Morris Claiborne and return weapon Dwayne Harris back as well.
