Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Congrats to UMass for getting into Top 25 for first time since 1998; they are playing a challenging schedule and playing very well.

-- Dayton 84, Gonzaga 79-- Flyers were down 16 in first half, scored 56 points in second half to pull upset in Maui Classic.

-- Kentucky 68, Cleveland State 61-- Vikings were up 4 at half. Kentucky wound up with 27-14 edge on foul line. Tough to win on the road.

-- BYU 86, Texas 82-- We'll be seeing the Cougars in March; they've got to play Thurs/Sat in NCAAs. BYU doesn't play on Sundays.

-- Arizona State 79, Marquette 77-- ASU only played six guys more than five minutes, little bit of a red flag, seeing as they were up 15 early.

-- Portland 102, Knicks 91-- New York is 3-10 and sinking like a rock.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.....

13) The cool thing about building a winning football team is that most of the things that make a good franchise QB are things the general public cannot see. Does the QB study enough? Is he a great teammate? Do his teammates believe in him and will they follow him? When a team gets the ball down 3 with 2:00 to go on their own 30, do the other 46 players think the QB will lead them down the field?

I watch every game on TV, but have no idea about the intangibles and that’s what makes it interesting.

12) You want to be a gambler? Eight of the Dolphins’ 11 games this year have been decided by 4 or less points. Seems like every game they play comes down to a red zone drive in the last minute. Very tough team to handicap, especially with all the off-field chaos mixed in.

11) Jets are 0-2 since OC Marty Mornhinweg’s son became starting QB at Florida; not saying he is distracted, but its been a bad month for both the Jets and Gators. Florida's #3 WR used to be a fullback; they're a bit depleted.

10) This bears repeating: Georgia Southern beat Florida 26-20 Saturday without completing one pass. Zero. 0 for 3. None. Eagles are a I-AA team. Gators are a complete mess.

9) Sad thing about Georgia QB Aaron Murray tearing his ACL and having his college career end two games early, after 52 career starts; it’ll cost him a lot of money in the spring when the draft rolls around, but he’ll wind up playing in the NFL, but maybe not next year.

8) Tip of the cap to NY State’s DMV, whose online registration system turns out to be excellent. Did the whole online registration thing, was done in five minutes, had my sticker six days later. Efficient system by a department that takes its share of grief.

7) I’m not a big believer in ERA as a pitching stat; think the pitcher should be held responsible for all the runs he gives up, even if a fielder screws up. We don’t discredit the pitcher if a fielder makes a great play and saves several runs. It all should even out eventually, which is why we use RA on this website, not ERA.

6) Dodgers signed Dan Haren for one year, $10M, good value for a veteran pitcher. Makes me nervous because it means Ricky Nolasco walks, and I have him on my fantasy team; don’t want him in Colorado or the AL. Sounds like a good deal for the Dodgers, though.

5) Over the last three seasons, Derrick Rose has played 50 games for the Bulls, and banked $41,028,896. Oy.

4) If you care about such things, since it is Maui Classic week, here is next year’s field: Arizona-BYU-K State-Missouri-Pitt-Purdue-San Diego State, along with host Chaminade. Strong field, as usual.

3) Has an NFL head coach ever won Coach of the Year in consecutive years, for two different teams? Bruce Arians might do that, although Andy Reid figures to win COY unless the Chiefs collapse.

2) Former Cleveland Browns' GM Phil Savage pointed out on Twitter that when Robert Griffin gets tackled, none of his teammates help him up; he thinks that is telling. Seeing as he is a former NFL GM, I believe him.

1) Off top of my head, I'm thinking this is the busiest week of the sports year, in terms of sheer volume; Rivalry Saturday in college football, ton of good college basketball, the first 16-game NFL card in a while, plus NBA and NHL games. Good week to log onto this website every day.

The cherry on top of this spot bet sundae is that BU has a showdown with Texas for a spot in the Big 12 title game in Week 14.

Lookahead spot

The Brooklyn Nets’ “Big Three” (or “Big Four” depending on how big a Brook Lopez fan you are) has been a big bust so far this season. Kevin Garnett looks 100 years old, Paul Pierce hasn’t shot this bad since his rookie season, and Deron Williams is once again limping up and down the court. The Nets are 3-10 (4-9 ATS) out of the gate and have lost five straight heading into Tuesday’s trip to Toronto and Wednesday’s home date with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Brooklyn needs some time away. Thankfully – pun intended – the Nets get that break with Thanksgiving Thursday and a western road trip to Houston and Memphis at the end of the week. With a chance to get away from the court and escape from the merciless New York media, the Nets could get caught looking ahead to a belly full of turkey and the solitude of a hotel room before handling business versus a Lakers team picking up steam off three straight wins and covers.

Schedule spot

When is a home game not a home game? When it’s played in another country. The Buffalo Bills come to the comfy confines of the Rogers Centre in Toronto to “host” the Atlanta Falcons in Week 13. Buffalo fans have long been miffed over this yearly game in Canada (you would be too if your team was 1-4 SU and 1-3-1 ATS north of the border), losing a great home-field edge in the November cold at Ralph Wilson and instead trading it in for the indoor track in T.O. – a venue that plays right into the Falcons’ hands.

While this week's outing in Toronto is slotted as a home game, the Bills’ schedule has them playing four of their final five games away from Buffalo. They hit the road for two straight weeks – in Tampa Bay and Jacksonville – then are back home against the Dolphins before trip to New England for the finale. Oh, BTW, weather in Buffalo Sunday: High 30s, chance of rain, winds 15 mph. Home sweet dome.

NFL Week 13 opening line report: Oddsmakers giving thanks

This Thanksgiving, Las Vegas oddsmakers are thankful for a relatively tight set of NFL games on the holiday Thursday.

Outside of the Dallas Cowboys being favored by 9.5 points at home to Oakland, the other two contests should stay within a touchdown, which is good news on a day when the turkey-stuffed public loves to pound the favorite and the Over.

“That’s the way it is anytime you see marquee schedules,” Peter Korner, founder of the Nevada-based odds service The Sports Club, tells Covers. “Everyone will have their separate wagers rolling into each other on Thanksgiving. But this year’s schedule presents a pretty good challenge to bettors.”

The biggest question on everyone’s mind heading into Thursday’s trio of games is the status of Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, who has missed the last three games with a broken collarbone. Korner is advising his clients to keep the game off the board until more is known on Rodgers but says to expect a 7-point swing if the former MVP is ready to go.

“Without (Rodgers), I’d have to say Detroit by a touchdown,” Korner says of Thursday’s early game. “If he’s back, probably around a pick. Detroit was a ‘bet against’ team last week, with early money on Tampa Bay. We’ll see what happens with them with a short week.”

Korner expects the majority of the middle game action to come in strong on Dallas. Most shops are dealing the Cowboys as 9.5-point home favorites but Korner isn’t convinced books will want to go above the key number of 10.

“We’re wary of the Oakland-Dallas game. That’s the trouble game,” says Korner. “Oakland has come down with such a thud last week and Dallas is coming off a big win. All the action with be on Dallas.”

As for the night cap, Korner says books couldn’t be happier to have a rivalry like Pittsburgh-Baltimore split the action. This AFC North grudge match could have a ton of parlay action rolling into it depending on the outcome of the first two games.

“This is the game you want,” he says. “These types of games, anything can happen. The difference is pretty much the home field.”

Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs (+2)

With both of these AFC West powers coming off a loss, bettors have some tough terrain to scale in Week 13. Denver took the first meeting with Kansas City easily two weeks ago but playing in Arrowhead is a completely different scenario.

“These two are meeting again on such short notice that it is coming in around a pick,” says Korner. “There is a revenge factor for Kansas City but certainly the Chiefs need to redefine themselves and this is the game to do it.”

New Orleans Saints at Seattle Seahawks (-6)

Korner sent out this spread at Seattle -4 but agrees with the move many books have taken to Seahawks -6. New Orleans just hasn’t been the same team away from the Big Easy and heads to the toughest venue in football – CenturyLink Field – where Monday temperatures are expect to be around freezing with a chance of showers.

“That line plays into Seattle, not that the conditions and the home field aren’t noted,” he says. “New Orleans’ last game is going to be on people’s minds – scoring only 17 points on the road in Atlanta – and how different that scoring is between home and the road."

Packers' Rodgers 'slim to none' to play on Thanksgiving

Cheeseheads and Green Bay bettors alike were holding out hope that MVP QB Aaron Rodgers would be able to return to action this Thursday when the Packers head to Detroit to take on the Lions on Thanksgiving.

As reported by Dan Gantt of Pro Football talk, Aaron Rodgers wants to play this week, but Packers coach Mike McCarthy told reporters it would be a 'huge stretch' to think he would be sufficiently recovered from a broken collar bone to play the Lions on Thursday. Rodgers suffered the broken collar bone four weeks ago against Chicago.

McCarthy is leaning towards starting Matt Flynn at QB for the Packers (5-5-1 ATS) against the Lions (6-5 ATS), after solid relief work replacing Scott Tolzien against Minnesota this past Sunday.

Doomed in the dome: Bills struggle in Toronto

The Buffalo Bills make their annual trip north of the border as they 'host' the Atlanta Falcons at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada this week.

The date with Atlanta marks the sixth regular season game the Bills will play in the Rogers Centre since 2008.

Despite the game being billed as a home game, Buffalo has had very little success in Toronto.

In the five games in Ontario, the Bills own a 1-4 SU record, 1-3-1 ATS record and 1-4 O/U mark.

The lone Over was the result of the Seattle Seahawks hanging 50 points on the dismal Bills in last season's game.

The Bills are currently 3.5-point favorites and the total is 46.

Billikens force turnovers 22.8% of time, hold foes to 20.3% from arc- those are Badger strengths.

Minnesota only played seven guys in 75-67 loss to Syracuse Monday; now they'll be facing a fellow pressing team in Arkansas, which played 11 kids 10+ minutes in its 85-77 loss to Cal. Gophers are 5-1; only good win is by 15 at Richmond. Razorbacks' best win is over SMU by 11. Big Dozen teams are 5-6 vs spread on neutral courts; SEC teams are 3-4.

California is holding teams to 35% from floor in its 5-0 start- they used six kids more than 8:00 Monday vs pressing Arkansas, playing four of its starters 33+ minutes, but 2-3 zone is less physically demanding to go against. 5-0 Syracuse was 22-27 on line against Gophers with only ten (+9) turnovers. Cal's big guy Solomon got poked in eye late in game, did not finish game, but that may also be because he is 40% from foul line.

Dayton was down 16 in first half last night, rallied to upset Gonzaga, as Flyers had 18 offensive boards and survived shaky (21-35) shooting on foul line. Dayton used four subs 11+ minutes. Baylor went 11-25 from arc in 92-77 win over D-II Chaminade, which got 42 points (10-16 from arc) from a guard. No Baylor player played more than 28 minutes.

5-0 Pitt was up 23 at half, cruised past Texas Tech; Panthers recruit a lot in NYC, so they'll have slight crowd edge here. Pitt hasn't played top 100 team yet; #39 Stanford held off Houston in nightcap Monday, with three Cardinal playing 36+ minutes. Stanford had been making 41% from arc before going 7-21 Monday. ACC neutral court favorites are 7-2.

Wichita State shot 59.6% from floor, beat DePaul of Big East by 18; it was 52-34 at half in mostly stress-free game. Shockers were 28-37 from foul line, 3-8 from arc- they get ball inside. BYU used three kids 34+ in tough 86-82 win over Texas; Cougars made 10-12 from arc, held Texas tp 38% from floor. Luckily for BYU, Longhorns also missed 11 FTs. BYU will challenge Wichita's defense; they can score.

Manhattan is 3-1 against four teams rated higher than #226 Fordham; in LY's game, Jaspers survived 27 turnovers (-12) to win 67-58, getting to foul line 33 (26-33) times. Manhattan won last two series games as they both struggle to rebuild once-proud programs, with Jaspers further along in process. Fordham is 2-2, losing by 12 to Sacred Heart in last game.

Hard to tell much about Murray State, which is 0-3 vs D-I teams, with all three games on road; Racers lost PG Jackson (knee) in preseason, so that hurts, added to graduation losses. Middle Tennessee is 4-1, losing to Florida by 20, beating gaggle of stiffs; Blue Raiders are moving up this year to C-USA- they're top 40 team in experience, but have history of flopping in conference tournaments.

4-0 Utah State already has 71-64 win at decent UCSB; they're shooting 46.6% behind arc (#6 in US), 76% from foul line as they visit Weber St. team they've beaten four of last five times, losing last visit to Ogden by 10. LY. Weber State hasn't played in 10 days; they're 0-2, losing by 21 at Colorado State, 9 at BYU- they're 2nd-to-last in US forcing TO's.

NFL line watch: Sharp money in love with Bucs again

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+9.5) at Carolina Panthers

With three straight wins under its belt, sharps are once again quick to jump on undervalued Tampa Bay this week. This line opened at 10, dropped to 9.5, with 8.5's and 8's starting to make an appearance on the board now as well.

They say divisional contests are always the most difficult and, while the Bucs won't be playing in the postseason this year, there's no doubt they'll be looking to parlay their recent success and throw a monkey-wrench into the Panthers' playoff plans.

While Carolina did gut out the 20-16 win over the Fish last week, it was not the overall dominant performance that we've become accustomed to seeing over its previous six wins. With a game at division-leading New Orleans next week, there's no question that this contest sets up as a classic "lookahead / trap" game for the home side. If you can still get 9.5, I'd recommend you seriously consider grabbing it as fast as possible.

Spread to wait on

Cincinnati Bengals (Pick) at San Diego Chargers

If you think the Bengals can build off their 41-20 win over the Browns two weeks ago, I'd recommend waiting a bit closer to kickoff before getting down as the public jumps on the suddenly "hot" home side.

At 5-6, obviously San Diego is not where it hoped it would be at this point of the season. However, after a couple of subpar years, there's no question that its veteran QB Philip Rivers is having a resurgent season. San Diego went into its bye in Week 8 off back-to-back victories, only to lose three straight. Last week's 41-38 win in Kansas City has once again given the Bolts some life.

This line opened as a pick’em, but there are some 1's and 1.5's starting to creep onto the board as well. Bettors should also note that Cincinnati has struggled on the road this year, going just 2-4 SU and 1-4-1 ATS.

Total to watch

Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs (48.5)

Any total involving the Denver Broncos is interesting to me. These teams played two weeks ago in Denver and the Broncos would come away with the 27-17 victory, staying below the posted number of 49.

After 11 games, the O/U for Denver is at 9-2, including 4-1 on the road. And after playing to two straight Unders, the total soared above the posted number in its 34-31 collapse at New England last week.

On the other side of the field, the Chiefs came out of their bye and lost two in a row, including last week's brutal 41-38 blunder to San Diego at home. Before getting down on this one, take note that the total has gone Under the number in five of these divisional foes’ last six in the series.
