College football odds: Week 14 opening line report

Thanksgiving weekend and football make a great American tradition. On the college gridiron, it’s a time when the turkeys are on the table, not on your television screen, with myriad big matchups, including many rivalries.

Perhaps the most noteworthy contest is Saturday’s Iron Bowl, with high stakes in both the Southeastern Conference and the Bowl Championship Series standings.

Top-ranked Alabama (11-0 SU, 6-4-1 ATS) makes the short road trip to face archrival and sixth-ranked Auburn (10-1 SU), which is tied for third nationally at the betting window with a stout 9-2 ATS record.

The Tigers have won six in a row SU and seven in a row ATS, and they’re coming off a bye following the absolutely stunning late touchdown that secured a 43-38 home win over Georgia as a 3-point favorite Nov. 16. The Crimson Tide also ostensibly had a bye this weekend, taking on FCS outfit Chattanooga on Saturday and rolling 49-0, though that only earned them a push, as they were laying 49.

Speaking of 49-0, that’s the exact score by which ‘Bama basted Auburn last year. With that in mind, Peter Korner – founder of Nevada-based odds service The Sports Club -- said while this year’s matchup looks great based on ranking and such a strong rivalry, it didn’t pencil out that way with his oddsmakers.

“It’s not a particularly good game. We all had Alabama between a 12 to 14-point favorite,” Korner said. “After seeing Oregon and Baylor fall this past week, we're pretty sure Alabama will be focused. We sent out Alabama -13. Offshores were at -10.5, but we had it higher before we saw their number and like it even better now. There is no way ‘Bama gets caught off guard.”

Texas Tech Red Raiders at Texas Longhorns (-6)

It’s not exactly Texas-Texas A&M, a rivalry that went bye-bye when the Aggies bolted for the Southeastern Conference after the 2011 season. But if you’ve had your fill of the NFL on Thanksgiving day and want to skip the Steelers-Ravens that evening, this could be an entertaining contest.

Texas Tech (7-4, 5-6 ATS) is coming off a bye and has the nation’s No. 1 passing attack at 400.2 ypg, helping the Aggies to an average of 37.5 ppg (21st). But the Red Raiders have had the bottom fall out since winning their first seven games, going 0-4 SU and ATS while allowing 50.5 ppg.

Texas (7-3, 5-5 ATS) also is coming off a bye, after its six-game win streak – which probably saved coach Mack Brown’s job – was snapped in a 38-13 blowout home loss to Oklahoma State.

“We had an odd range of numbers – as low as Texas -2 up to Texas -8, which I had personally,” Korner said. “I sent out Texas -6. This game has meaning only to Texas, and I didn't see how Tech was going to be motivated in this spot. The Longhorns need the win. I'm glad to see our opener is a lot higher than the offshores, but I did notice early money on Tech. That seems like a really strange move. I only see this line coming back up.”

Ohio State Buckeyes at Michigan (+13.5)

Even if nothing is on the line, this game is always huge. In this case, the ramifications for Ohio State are huge.

The Buckeyes (11-0, 6-4-1 ATS) have a shot at squeezing into the BCS Championship Game if they can remain unbeaten. Michigan (7-4 SU, 6-5 ATS) has no shot at reaching the Big Ten title game, but the Wolverines’ season would be deemed a full success if they beat the archrival Buckeyes.

Michigan is 1-8 SU and ATS in its last nine against Ohio State, winning 40-34 two years ago at the Big House but failing to cash as an 8.5-point chalk.

“Another double-digit favorite in which this plays into the favorite all the way,” Korner said. “Ohio State needs the game, while Michigan is playing for some obscure bowl game being played on a Tuesday night sometime in the future. There is no way Ohio State is distracted."

“Our range went from Ohio State -10.5 to -14.5, and we sent out -13.5. It looks like there was some early money on Michigan, but we're not going for that. Anyone hanging this line on the light side will pay for it come game time.”

UCLA Bruins at Southern California Trojans (-6)

Prior to this weekend, both these teams had a shot to reach the Pac-12 title game. But Arizona State’s victory over UCLA on Saturday knocked both the Bruins and USC out of contention, so they’ll play this one for pride.

Southern Cal (9-3, 6-6 ATS) has stunningly regained its form since firing Lane Kiffin, going on a 6-1 SU run (5-2 ATS), including a 47-29 victory at Colorado on Saturday as a 21-point favorite. UCLA (8-3 SU, 7-4 ATS) had won three in a row SU before the 38-33 loss to ASU as a 3-point home underdog.

“This is a good game, which we wouldn't have expected four weeks ago,” Korner said. “Four of my oddsmakers had this in the range of USC -3 to -5.5. I personally had -9. USC has been the nuts since their shakeup. I tempered my bad line to send out USC -6, while I stared at a -3.5 on the offshores. Both teams are having good seasons, but USC is winning games by an average of almost 17 points the past five contests. The only big game UCLA has had in the past five weeks was at home against Colorado. No big feat. I think this number climbs come game time.”

Western Michigan Broncos at Northern Illinois Huskies (-35)

Northern Illinois looks to stay alive in its hunt for a second straight Bowl Championship Series appearance when it hosts Western Michigan on Tuesday. The Huskies, who are 16th in the latest BCS rankings, need to leapfrog Fresno State in the standings to earn a berth. Northern Illinois has already clinched a spot in the Mid-American Conference title game for a fourth straight year.

Things have gone much differently for Western Michigan which hopes to play spoiler in its season finale. The Broncos have just one win on the season, a 31-30 decision at one-win Massachusetts. Other than that, it has been a dismal season as Western Michigan has been outscored by an average of more than three touchdowns and ranks tied for 108th in the nation in rushing (118.3 yards).

ABOUT WESTERN MICHIGAN (1-10, 1-6 MAC): The Broncos haven't beaten the Huskies since opening the 2008 MAC season with a 29-26 victory. Wide receiver Corey Davis has been a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season as he is 87 yards away from becoming the fourth wide receiver in MAC history to reach 1,000 yards receiving in their rookie season. Dareyon Chance had a 29-yard scoring run in the Tigers' last loss, a 27-22 setback against Central Michigan.

Miss. St. QB Prescott out this week vs. Ole Miss

Mississippi State QB Dak Prescott will miss Thursday night's game against state rival Ole Miss and likely the remainder of the regular season.

The odds for the Thanksgiving SEC showdown are currently off the board as Mississippi State (5-6, 6-5 ATS) will more than likely look to third string QB Damian Williams to guide the Bulldogs to a win against the Ole Miss Rebels (7-4, 6-5 ATS) and clinch their fourth consecutive appearance in a bowl game.

Williams entered Saturday's game at Arkansas after backup Tyler Russell injured his shoulder, and scored his first career touchdown for the Bulldogs, which turned out to be the game winner.

Prescott may be able to return to action if the Bulldogs if they do qualify for the Bowl season. He leads Mississippi State in passing and rushing yards, with 1,542 and 722 respectively.

Beyond the BCS: Big profits from NCAAF small conferences

Team to watch: Alabama-Birmingham Blazers (2-9 SU, 4-7 ATS)

This week: -14.5 vs. Southern Mississippi

UAB may be better than its five-game losing streak suggests. As a 17-point underdog last Saturday, it extended an 8-3 Rice team to overtime before falling 37-34. This week's matchup should be a good one for the Blazers. The weakness of their team (232.2 rushing yards allowed per game) is going up against a futile Southern Mississippi rushing attack (70.3 ypg). On the other side of the ball, UAB averages 181.1 yards on the ground while the Golden Eagles give up 231.8.

Southern Mississippi has not won a game since the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 24, 2011. For those counting, that's 23 consecutive losses. That also means zero career wins for head coach Todd Monken, who replaced UNC-bound Larry Fedora after the 2011 campaign. Freshman quarterback Nick Mullens threw two pick-sixes in last week's 42-21 setback against Middle Tennessee. The Golden Eagles lost 27-19 as 4-point home favorites against UAB last year and they are now 0-4 ATS in the last four head-to-head meetings.

Team to beware: Western Michigan Broncos (1-10 SU, 3-8 ATS)

This week: +35 at Northern Illinois

The 1-10 Broncos are still playing with freshman quarterback Zach Terrell, who has made five starts in place of senior Tyler Van Tubbergen. Only once has Terrell thrown for more touchdowns than interceptions (Western Michigan's lone win of the season, 31-30 scalp of Massachusetts on Oct. 26). Tuesday signals the final home game for Northern Illinois QB Jordan Lynch. He has thrown seven TDs and zero picks in his last four games for the undefeated and 16th-ranked Huskies.

Western Michigan is 1-8 ATS in its last nine conference games, 1-7 ATS in its last eight overall, 2-13-1 ATS in its last 16 against Northern Illinois, and 0-8 ATS in its last eight road trips in this head-to-head series.

Total team: Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (4-7 SU, 2-9 O/U)

This week: 48 at Texas-San Antonio

Louisiana Tech will likely be without running back Kenneth Dixon and wide receiver Andrew Guillot for Saturday's contest at Texas-San Antonio. Dixon (knee) has 151 rushes for 917 yards and four touchdowns (plus one receiving) in 10 games. Guillot (arm) has 26 receptions for 320 yards and four touchdowns in seven games. The Bulldogs have scored 14 points in each of their last two outings. Without Dixon in last week’s loss to Tulsa, they attempted 43 passes and were picked off four times.

The under is 4-1 in Louisiana Tech's last five conference games and 9-2 in its last 11 overall. As for Texas-San Antonio, the under is 7-1 in its last eight against Conference-USA opposition and 5-1 in its last six overall.

Betting NCAAF teams on the bowl game bubble

Better late than never, right?

With the majority of FBS teams wrapping up their regular seasons this week, a handful of schools still have a shot at becoming bowl-eligible. Yet, with 70 teams having already gained bowl eligibility - matching the exact number of bowl slots available - there will be plenty of jockeying between teams with tenuous grips on a spot and those looking to join the fray.

Here are four teams facing must-win games this week:

Syracuse Orange (5-6, 3-4 ACC)

This week: vs. Boston College Eagles (7-4, 4-3)

The Orange had a golden opportunity to secure their bowl eligibility against Pitt, but the Panthers pulled out a 17-16 victory to lock up their own bowl bid last week. Syracuse has dropped back-to-back games - scoring just 19 points over that stretch - and won't be given any favors in their season finale facing an Eagles team looking to improve its own bowl standing. Even if Syracuse wins, there's no guarantee the Orange will land in a bowl game. The ACC already has 10 bowl-eligible teams, meaning that somebody will likely be left out if the Orange prevail.

Syracuse is a 2.5-point underdog against Boston College.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (5-5, 2-4 AAC)

This week: at Connecticut Huskies (1-9, 1-5)

The Scarlet Knights looked to be cruising to certain bowl eligibility after opening the season 4-1, but have since dropped four of their last five to leave their postseason status in doubt. Fortunately for Rutgers, the remaining schedule is a giant cupcake, beginning with Saturday's game in Connecticut. The Huskies are coming off their first victory of the season, but will be in tough against a Scarlet Knights offense racking up nearly 380 yards of total offense per game. And should Rutgers lose, it still has one more shot in its season finale against 2-8 South Florida.

Rutgers is a 3-point favorite versus Connecticut Saturday.

Florida Atlantic Owls (5-6, 3-4 C-USA)

This week: vs. Florida International Golden Panthers (1-10, 1-6)

The Owls' transformation from Conference USA also-ran to bowl eligibility contender has been nothing short of astounding. And the team is being rewarded for its hard work with the easiest game of any bubble team. Florida Atlantic enters as a heavy favorite against the Golden Panthers, who have lost six straight games, with their last three defeats coming by a combined 109 points. The Owls have reeled off three straight victories since interim coach Brian Wright took over for Carl Pellini, who stepped down after confessing to taking drugs.

Florida Atlantic is a 28.5-point favorite versus visiting FIU.

San Jose State Spartans (5-6, 4-3)

This week: vs. Fresno State Bulldogs (10-0, 7-0)

Having failed to lock up a bowl berth in each of the past three weeks, the Spartans have left themselves a truly unenviable task - defeating the 15th-ranked Bulldogs. Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr has been one of the most prolific players in the nation this season, throwing for nearly 4,000 yards and 39 touchdowns while leading the NCAA's second-ranked pass attack. San Jose State missed its best chance to enter the bowl conversation last week, dropping a 58-52 triple-overtime stunner to Navy behind seven rushing touchdowns from QB Keenan Reynolds.

San Jose State is an 8.5-point underdog against visiting Fresno State.

College football line watch: Total too low for Civil War?

Spread to bet now

SMU Mustangs (+10) at Houston Cougars

The current pointspread sits on the key number of 10, but we expect this line to come down soon. These two teams are heading in opposite directions. SMU has won four of their last five games with their lone loss coming by just three points at Cincinnati. The Mustangs are 5-5 on the season and a win in this game makes them bowl eligible. They host a very good Central Florida team next week so they need to win this game.

The wheels are coming off for Houston. The Cougars have lost three consecutive games and they are just 2-4 over their six games. Houston has been an underdog in four of those games, including a double-digit dog in three of those outings. Now it is laying 10 points with a struggling offense that has scored a total of 44 points in the last three games.

SMU crushed Houston by 30 points last year (72-42). This game won’t last at +10 so grab the Mustangs now before the line crashes down.

Spread to wait on

Minnesota Golden Gophers (+14.5) at Michigan State Spartans

This is a terrible scheduling spot for Michigan State. Heavy money poured in against the Spartans last week, but they still waxed Northwestern 30-6.

That win gave Michigan State the Legends division championship. The Spartans are in the Big Ten title game, so this game against Minnesota means absolutely nothing.

Minnesota has flown under the radar this season. The Gophers are 8-3 SU and ATS, covering in five straight games. Minnesota will take this game more seriously than Michigan State as the Gophers are looking to improve their bowl destination.

While we’re already getting over the key number of 14, every point helps so we’ll wait and hopefully grab the Gophers at +16 or more.

Total to watch

Oregon State Beavers at Oregon Ducks (67.5)

What happened to Oregon’s offense last week? The Ducks scored just 16 points against a bad Arizona defense. That was just the fourth time they’ve scored less than 34 points over their last 38 games. The Ducks still rolled up 506 yards of offense against Arizona but three turnovers did them in.

Neither Oregon State nor its defense has fared well in the Civil War. The Beavers have lost seven of the last 10 meetings while allowing Oregon to score 31 points or more in eight of those 10 games. The Ducks scored 48 and 49 points over the last two years.

The Beavers have a potent passing offense led by QB Sean Mannion. He has 4,089 passing yards with a 34-to-13 TD/INT ratio. Oregon State will score as the Ducks’ defense has fallen apart in recent weeks.

Any total posted less than 70 may be too low for this rivalry game barring bad weather.

Thanksgiving NCAAF action: What bettors need to know

Texas Tech Red Raiders at Texas Longhorns (-4, 66)

Texas Tech hopes its first Thanksgiving Day game will snap its November woes. The Red Raiders visit Texas on a four-game losing streak and a 1-10 mark in November during the past three seasons. The host Longhorns have a 58-24-3 record on Thanksgiving and have beaten the Red Raiders in 12 of the last 14 meetings.

The Texas secondary is in the middle of a tough stretch, facing Oklahoma State, Texas Tech's NCAA-leading passing game and Baylor in consecutive contests. The injury-depleted Longhorns will also be without suspended receiver Daje Johnson on Thursday. The Red Raiders have struggled to stop the run during its slide, allowing nearly 300 yards per game.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1.

LINE: The line has stayed steady with Texas favored by 4 at home. The total is currently at 66.

WEATHER: It will be clear with temperatures in the high 40s.

ABOUT TEXAS TECH (7-4, 5-6 ATS): "We've just got to find a way to (get stops)," coach Kliff Kingsbury said during his Monday press conference. "The missed tackles was concerning and we got back to the basics of that (during the bye week)." The Red Raiders, trying to avoid their second five-game losing streak in three years, lead the country in passing at 400.2 yards. Tight end Jace Amaro leads the team with 92 catches for 1,157 yards and is on pace to set the NCAA record for single-season receptions and yards by a tight end (Rice's James Casey had 111 catches for 1,329 yards in 2008).

ABOUT TEXAS (7-3, 5-5 ATS): Malcolm Brown (515 yards, nine touchdowns) and Joe Bergeron (240 yards, three TDs) have carried the load for Texas - which has the league's third-best running attack at 192.7 yards - after leading rusher Johnathan Gray (780 yards, four TDs) was lost to an Achilles injury two games ago. The Longhorns' defensive turnaround has Texas leading the Big 12 in total defense with 349.6 yards allowed in conference games. "(Texas Tech is) moving the ball so well," coach Mack Brown said. "It will really be a test for our secondary here at the end of the year. We're getting into the tempo (of) full-speed ahead Big 12 offenses."

The battle for the Egg Bowl will return to Thanksgiving night for the first time in 10 years as Mississippi travels to take on Mississippi State Thursday. The Bulldogs are looking for their fourth victory in the last five meetings with the Rebels, who hold a considerable 61-42-6 edge in the series. "I'm excited to play this game on Thanksgiving night," Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen said. "My first experience with the Egg Bowl. I think it's a neat deal, and a really neat opportunity for us."

In addition to capturing the Egg Bowl, Mississippi can prevent the Bulldogs from becoming bowl-eligible. Hugh Freeze's team is already assured of a bowl game for the second straight season and are eyeing a .500 record in the SEC. "Thanksgiving week brings the Egg Bowl, one of the most historic and greatest rivalries in college football," Freeze said. "We know the task at hand is going to be a great challenge. Certainly we're excited about getting down there and playing."

LINE: The line opened at +3 and now Mississippi State are 4.5-point home dogs. The total opened at 52 and has been bet up to 53.5.

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI (7-4, 6-5 ATS): Quarterback Bo Wallace battled flu-like symptoms in a 24-10 loss to Missouri, which is one of four ranked teams to beat the Rebels this season. Freeze was unable to update the condition of the Wallace, who has completed 64.4 percent of his passes this season for 2,908 and 17 touchdowns, but the junior was at practice Monday. "There won't be any effect at all," said Wallace, who threw five touchdowns in last year's Egg Bowl. "Tomorrow (Tuesday) I will be almost 100 percent."

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE (5-6, 6-5 ATS): Damien Williams is expected to start at quarterback Thursday after scoring the winning touchdown in last week's victory over Arkansas in relief of starter Tyler Russell, who injured his shoulder. Dak Prescott leads the team in passing and rushing, but won't be available unless the Bulldogs qualify for a bowl for the fourth consecutive season. "Damien took all the reps in practice," Mullen said. "I trust him."
