Mark Lawrence Playbook Midweek Alert: NFL
ST. LOUIS over Carolina by 10
Panthers were impressive in shutting down the Tuna's soft spread offense. Today, however, they take on a legitmate Top 10 attack in the Rams, a team that has polished off 15 of 16 non division foes behind QB Marc Bulger. The biggest handicapping edge here comes from the fact that rested home teams, playing off a SU and ATS loss, are 19-8 ATS in the post season. Combine that with the fact that teams on the playoff road who had a losing record the previous year are 5-32 SU and 13-23-1 ATS. St. Louis has reeled off 14 consecutive wins at home in the dome, an especially important stat when you consider Carolina's 5-25 ATS mark in games they lose when playing off a win. The lethal combination of a rested home team off a loss makes St. Louis Ram-tough here today.
NEW ENGLAND over Tennessee by 6
Two of the league's best coaches (Bill Belichick and Jeff Fisher) will trade X's and O's in a series that's seen the host go 9-1 SU and ATS since 1980. The Patriots played perfect in Foxboro, going 8-0 SU and ATS this season. Included was a 38-30 defeat of the Titans in a pick'em affair the first week of October. Today they are a touchdown favorite against the same team despite the fact the Titans have won 10 of their last 12 games since. Hence, the linesmaker's respect for rested home teams in the post season. What he doesn't know is the last 13 teams to have tossed a shutout are 2-11 SU and ATS in the playoffs since 1993. It's difficult fading a rested, undefeated homer in a homer series. If you are going to do it you'd probably want the league's best underdog coach, and that's Fisher (42-22-1 ATS as a puppy, including 30-15 ATS as a road dog). Our feeling is the winner of this game will be playing in Houston on February 1st.
