    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the most intriguing games on this week's schedule........

-- Arizona State (-2) @ UCLA-- Two of better teams in the Pac-12.

-- Texas A&M @ LSU (-4.5)-- Johnny Football visits Death Valley.

-- Baylor (-9.5) @ Oklahoma State-- Two best teams in Big X.

-- Jets @ Baltimore (-4)-- Ed Reed played 88% of snaps Sunday.

-- Cowboys @ Giants (-2.5)-- Dallas off bye; Giants won four in row.

-- Broncos (-3) @ Patriots-- Wes Welker comes back to Foxboro.

    *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

    13) Taunting penalties are my new pet peeve; how does an official pick one guy to flag for running his mouth, when you know there are half dozen guys doing same thing on just about every play? It seems arbitrary and unfair. That said, players know the rules exist, but lot of them don’t seem to care.

Couple weeks ago in Indy, Rams kicked off to start the game—it was a touchback, so basically, very little happened. Yet a scrub on the Rams got a taunting penalty; do you want to stay employed??? What could he be thinking? Please just shut up and play.

    12) Anyone who knows me know I never root for the 49ers, but the Brooks hit on Drew Brees Sunday shouldn’t have been a penalty, not even under today’s lawsuit-hindered touch football rules. He didn’t hit Brees in the head; he hit him in the shoulders, really hard. Its football, people will get banged around, that’s a big part of why the sport is popular.

    11) I am told one million PS4 consoles were sold the first day they were available, just in North America. One thing I’ve successfully avoided are video games, but lot of people really like them.

Read once where the wife of an NBA player had his video game stuff FedEx’ed to him on the road when he forgot it for a road trip- she was afraid if he couldn’t play video games in his hotel, he’d be out in the night clubs cheating on her. Lesser of two evils….lol

    10) Belmont 83, North Carolina 80—Bruins’ first win over ranked opponent in 10 years; they made 15-37 from the arc, while Tar Heels were a dreadful 22-48 on the foul line, with Tokoto 4-16 by himself. UNC better get Hairston back soon; he covers up a lot of their weaknesses.

    9) Division III hooper Jack Taylor of Grinnell scored 180 points in his first two games; he had 71 in the opener, 109 Saturday, making 24-48 behind the arc. Grinnell alternates three units of five guys and they have highly specialized roles; Taylor’s is to shoot, and he is good at it.

Have to ask though, who is coaching against them? Kid scores that many points, he has to get knocked on his butt now and then, just so he knows there’s an opponent out there. At least deny him the ball.

    8) Iowa State 77, Michigan 70—Game was 5:00 Sunday so I missed it, but total of only 28 foul shots were taken. Debate on Twitter was about whether the teams fouled less, or did refs just call fewer fouls? Haven’t been too many debacles/foul shot marathons with the new rules; feedback has been generally positive. Hope it makes the game better by time conference play starts.

    7) Unpleasant sound: hearing wind tear sheeting off the side of your house at 2:30 in the morning; makes a pretty loud sound, louder than the tree falling in the forest in that Geico commercial. Wind is scary; glad we don’t get much of it in upstate NY.

    6) Matthew Stafford had 362 passing yards thru three quarters Sunday, then went 0-10 in fourth, as Detroit fell apart and lost to a sub-par Steeler team, 37-27. After Calvin Johnson, Lions have terrible receivers; the most expensive pizza in America this fall might’ve been the one Nate Burleson was bringing home when he got into an accident and broke his arm. Lions really miss him. As in really, really miss him.

    5) Indiana State 83, Notre Dame 70—Sycamores are like a Mike D’Antoni team; first five 3’s they hit in South Bend were made by five different guys. What they may lack in athleticism they make up for in skills.

    4) Houston Rockets’ Omer Asik isn’t from this country, so he probably never heard of former Padres’ shortstop Garry Templeton, who once uttered this phrase after he wasn’t picked to start the All-Star Game: “If I ain’t startin’ , I ain’t departin’”

Asik is mad because he ain’t starting and wants a trade. Rockets don't want to trade him, but it looks like the rift is beyond repair so they’re going to have to, which makes it harder to get good value for him.

    3) Favorites to win college basketball national title: Kentucky/Louisville/ Michigan State, all 5-1. Kansas is 6-1, Duke 7-1. Odds are from golfodds.com.

    2) Best thing about this football season is the Redskins’ 3-8 record, since the Rams have Washington’s 1st-round draft pick as the last part of the RGIII package from the trade two years ago. Rams have their own #1 pick and Washington’s, which makes next April’s draft very important.

    1) My highest recommendation of Duck Dynasty is this: If a TV show can make me laugh on Sunday nights in 2013, when the Rams aren’t good, my football picks stink and I stupidly got involved in a fantasy league that isn’t going any better, if I’m laughing on Sunday nights this year, that TV show is damn funny. Duck Dynasty fits the bill. It’s a rare reality show that is good natured. Corny sometimes, but so what? Good stuff.

MLB betting: Three 2014 teams to be wary of

Before the feeding-frenzy that is Major League Baseball's free agent signing period starts to really heat up, it's time to take an early look at some teams to be wary of, despite decent odds to win next year's World Series. There a few teams with higher expectations, but still have plenty of work to do to before teams report to spring training.

      Los Angeles Angels (14-1)

The Angels were one of the most disappointing teams in 2012. They finished the season 74-88, which placed them third in the A.L. West, 18 games behind the Oakland A's. Although the Angels were a solid hitting team, their high paid superstar free agents Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton struggled. They both hit under .260 and combined for 38 HRs and 143 RBIs. That's $1.15 million per HR. But where the Angels really struggled was pitching and fielding. Aside from C.J. Wilson (17-7 3.39 ERA) and Jered Weaver (11-8 3.27 ERA), the Angels ranked 24th in team ERA (4.23) and 26th in opponents batting average (.261). So the Angels will have to sure up the back end of their rotation and bullpen if they want to be the contender many peg them to be.

      New York Yankees (16-1)

Any time the Bronx Bombers don't make the playoffs it's a disappointing season. Mix in the fact that the rival Boston Red Sox won the World Series and then it becomes even more vital the Yankees succeed next season. Unfortunately for the Yanks, what was already an anemic offense, may be losing their best position player in second baseman Robinson Cano. Cano is looking for a $300 million contract this offseason and if the Yankees don't offer something close to that, he may walk. On a team that ranked 24th in batting average (.242), 23rd in on base percentage (.307) and 26th in OPS (.683), Cano led the Yankees in
all three categories. He also led them in HRs (27), RBIs (107) and runs scored(81).

      Chicago White Sox (40-1)

Even at 40-1 those are favorable odds for a White Sox team that lost 99 games last season. It was the first time the Sox had fewer than 70 wins since 1995. The biggest problem for the White Sox last season was producing runs. Look for the White Sox to add a bat or two this offseason to try and beef up a lineup that also only had one player hit more than 20 HRs. The White Sox also only hit .249 last season and Adam Dunn was the only Chicago player to drive in more than 80 runs, no one else has more than 62. The White Sox finished last season ahead of only the lowly Miami Marlins in runs scored with 598 and ranked 28th in total RBIs with (574).

Timberwolves at Wizards: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Timberwolves at Washington Wizards (+3.5, 204)

The Minnesota Timberwolves look to even their road record and pick up their second consecutive victory when they travel to take on the struggling Washington Wizards on Tuesday. The Timberwolves routed Boston 106-88 on Saturday for their fifth win in six home games, but they're just 2-3 on the road. That could change against the Wizards, who dropped their fourth straight game Saturday, falling 103-96 in overtime against Cleveland after squandering a 15-point lead.

The Timberwolves finally seem to have the right personnel to be successful in third-year coach Rick Adelman's system and they have two point guards - Ricky Rubio and J.J. Barea - who are capable of running the show. "No question, I like it," Barea said of sharing the point duties with Rubio. "We do a good job moving the ball and attacking the paint." The teams split two meetings a year ago with the host winning each.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN North Plus (Minnesota), CSN Washington

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (7-4): Minnesota has put together a strong offensive team with the duo of Kevin Love (26.8 points, 13.6 rebounds) and Nikola Pekovic (13.9 points, 9 rebounds) controlling the post and Kevin Martin (24.4 points) lighting it up from outside. Rubio (8 points, 9.6 assists) continues to improve at both ends and averages 3.1 steals to anchor a solid defensive squad. The Timberwolves also take advantage of their trips to the foul line, ranking third in the NBA at 81.7 percent with three starters above 86 percent.

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (2-7): Washington has six players averaging double-digit scoring but has been one of the worst defensive teams in the league, allowing opponents to shoot 48.3 percent and score 104.6 points per game. The Wizards haven't yet seen first-round pick Otto Porter, who has missed the first nine games with a hip flexor, and another young star is struggling as point guard John Wall is shooting 29 percent over the past five games. Wall still averages 16.1 points and 9.1 assists and forms a promising young backcourt with leading scorer Bradley Beal (20.2 points).

        TRENDS:

        * Home team is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.
        * Timberwolves are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games.
        * Wizards are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 vs. NBA Northwest.
        * Over is 4-0 in Wizards last four games playing on two days rest.

        BUZZER BEATERS:

        1. Washington C Marcin Gortat has five double-doubles in his last seven games.

        2. Rubio has recorded a steal in 32 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NBA.

        3. Wizards SF Trevor Ariza (hamstring) missed Saturday's game and is not expected to play versus Minnesota.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Memphis at Oklahoma State: What bettors need to know
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Memphis Tigers at Oklahoma State Cowboys (-6.5, OFF)

After beating up on lesser competition so far this season, No. 9 Oklahoma State will face a major test when it hosts No. 11 Memphis in an Old Spice Classic game Tuesday that should feature plenty of offensive fireworks. The Cowboys are outscoring opponents by an average of 102.3-55 in three victories, paced by Phil Forte’s 21-point average off the bench. Starters Markel Brown (15.3), Le’Bryan Nash (13.7), Marcus Smart (13.7) and Bryan Williams (10) average double-figures for Oklahoma State.

The Tigers were the last team in Division I to open their season, drubbing Austin Peay 95-69 in their lid-lifter on Nov. 14. Memphis’ talented backcourt lived up to its expectations, with returners Joe Jackson, Chris Crawford, Geron Johnson, and Missouri transfer Michael Dixon Jr. breaking the 10-point mark. Johnson also recorded a double-double, pacing Memphis with 10 rebounds.

                          TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE: The line has not moved from -6.5. The total is currently OFF.

ABOUT MEMPHIS (1-0, 1-0 ATS): With depth established in the backcourt, size in the paint was the biggest question mark for coach Josh Pastner entering this season, and at least in the Tigers’ season-opening win, it was answered. Freshman Nick King, who stands 6-7, poured in 13 off the bench and sophomore Shaq Goodwin showed the touch around the rim that made him such a highly touted recruit with 10. Memphis also outrebounded Austin Peay 50-27.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA STATE (3-0, 0-0 ATS): Three blowout victories have done nothing to diminish the big expectations in Stillwater with four starters returning from a squad that won 24 games and went to the Sweet 16 last season. Smart is the unquestioned leader of the group, surprisingly returning to school after a freshman season in which he averaged 15.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and three steals and won Big 12 Player of the Year honors. Joined by dangerous scorers like Brown and Nash, the Cowboys are a legitimate Final Four threat if they stay healthy under sixth-year coach Travis Ford.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Tigers are 5-1 ATS in their last six games versus a team with a winning percentage above .600.
                          * Cowboys are 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight home games.
                          * Under is 5-1 in Tigers last six road games.
                          * Under is 4-1 in Cowboys last five games after scoring more than 90 points in their previous game.

                          TIP-INS:

                          1. The Cowboys are search of their second consecutive 4-0 start.

                          2. Tuesday marks only the fourth true road game in November for Memphis since 1973.

                          3. Pastner last faced Oklahoma State in the Sweet 16 of the 2005 NCAA Tournament as an assistant at Arizona under Lute Olson.
