    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Michigan State 78, Kentucky 74-- Young Wildcats were 20-36 from foul line, which cost them this game- they won't lose too many more.

-- Wildcats have 21 alums on NBA rosters, most of any college.

-- Kansas 94, Duke 83-- Jayhawks were 27-35 on foul line, starters shot 61% from floor. Thaank God the flopping era appears to be over.

-- VCU 59, Virginia 56-- You think VCU honchos look at Brad Stevens coaching the Celtics and worry about losing Shaka Smart to the NBA?

-- Cincinnati 68, NC State 57-- Solid win for the new AAC. Wolfpack shot only 33%; tough to open with this high quality a true road game.

-- Xavier 67, Tennessee 63-- Musketeers were up 9 with 1:38 left, hung on for dear life. Dismal day for the SEC East- Vols-Gators-Kentucky lost.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.....

    13) November 12, 1949: Maryland played Boston U in football at Fenway Park. A rookie radio announcer did his first broadcast that day, a guy named Vin Scully. Wonder whatever happened to him? 19-freakin’-49, and he still works baseball games on TV. By himself.

    12) Arena Football has an illegal defense rule that basically outlaws safeties from double-teaming receivers; what it eliminates, in effect, are a second DB clocking the WR and creates mostly all single coverage on WRs.

I can see NFL going to something like that, where the linebacker/safety has to stay in a certain box in the middle of the field until ball is snapped, , behind line of scrimmage. Hopefully not, but you get the feeling football is going to be changing a lot over the next few years.

    11) Former major league shortstop Jay Bell is the new bench coach in Cincinnati, where he’ll help new manager Brian Price, who was the Reds’ pitching coach until now.

    10) DirecTV really needs to add the Pac-12 Network. They have the Big 10 Network, why not just add another station and get rid of some of the goofy stations I never watch, like three soccer channels or one of the tennis stations? How many home shopping stations do I need?

    9) MVP of the Knicks is obviously Tyson Chandler, toughest guy they have. Spurs made 17 layups in their 31-point win Sunday, with Chandler out injured. TV people can call Carmelo Anthony a superstar all they want, but he’s only a superstar when the ball is in his hands.

There are two ends of the floor; Chandler plays fierce defense, which is why teams he plays for usually win.

    8) 11 NFL teams have already lost their starting QB for at least one game; four of those 11 also lost their #2 QB. Three of the four started three different QBs in three weeks. Hard to win that way.

    7) 13 of the top 30 NBA prospects played in the doubleheader at the United Center Tuesday night. That’s 13 out of 30 on only four teams.

    6) Miami Dolphins have played 729 games in franchise history; Monday night they had only two yards on 14 carries, the worst rushing output in franchise history. Against an 0-8 team.

    5) When people hear Dick Vitale doing college basketball games on TV, he sounds like a cartoon character, with his over-the-top enthusiasm, but not only was Vitale once a terrific coach, he has been a Hall of Fame warrior in the fight against cancer, raising over $100M. Wish I had his energy.

    4) Chiefs are 9-0 and an underdog in Denver Sunday night, first time since at least 1990 that an undefeated team with 9+ wins has been an underdog. Dwayne Bowe’s DUI/weed arrest ain’t helping the Chiefs’ cause any.

    3) Jose Fernandez won Rookie of the Year; why? Marlins were 18-10 when he started, 44-90 in all other games.

    2) 36-year old OF Marlon Byrd made $700,000 but drove in 88 runs this year for Mets/Pirates, which inspired the Phillies to give him $16M for two years. What a country- he was a scrap heap guy this time lasst year. .

    1) UMass beat LSU by a hoop, now has wins over an ACC (Boston College) and SEC team. Good start for them and the Atlantic 13. These games count just as much as any others on Selection Sunday in March.

NFL line watch: Patience required for Chicago backers

      Spread to bet now

Detroit Lions at Pittsburgh Steelers (+2.5)

Steelers' fans should consider jumping on their team right away. This line opened at +3, quickly dropped to 2.5, with 1.5's and 1's now starting to predominate.

The Lions would hold on for a 21-19 win in Chicago last week while the Steelers would bounce back from back-to-back losses to beat the Bills 23-10.

As brutally as Pittsburgh started the season, at 3-6 entering Week 11, it still mathematically has a shot at catching the division leading Bengals who are 6-4. A cold day at Heinz Field in mid-November is just what the doctor ordered for Pittsburgh to continue its winning ways.

Expect bettors to hit the undervalued home side throughout the week and for this number to inch closer and closer to the "pick em" range.

      Spread to wait on

Baltimore Ravens at Chicago Bears (-3)

Bears' backers be warned! I'd recommend waiting a little closer to kickoff before jumping on your team this week.

This lined opened at -3 and as of printing, I do in fact see a couple of 2.5's on the board (Pinnacle, 5Dimes), and I suspect that we'll start to see more and more as the week goes on.

Chicago coach Mark Trestman has said that QB Jay Cutler suffered a high-ankle sprain in last week's 21-19 loss to the Lions and has been ruled out vs. Baltimore. Josh McCown will now get the start for 'Da Bears under center this week.

The defending champs have looked brilliant at times this season and pretty pedestrian in others, but their 20-17 win over rival Cincinnati has them once again firmly in the mix for the division title this year. Cutler's injury will force bettors hands into backing the visitors this week.

      Total to watch

Minnesota Vikings at Seattle Seahawks (46)

Under bettors would be wise to get down on this one immediately.

This line opened at 46, and while for the most part that is still the predominating number as of printing, there are now a few 45.5's on the board as well. I think it could drop even lower.

Over the Vikes nine games this year, the total is 7-2; 5-0 at home but just 2-2 on the road. The Seahawks O/U to date is 5-5, dead even at 2-2 at home and 3-3 away from friendly confines.

A wet, blustery week leading up to kickoff in Seattle seems like conducive conditions for each club putting an added emphasis on running and protecting the ball in this game.

Hoyas have three starters back from LY's 25-7/14-4 team, but best two starters are gone. Wright State has four starters back from LY, when they wert 23-13- they lost by 10 at Cincinnati, their only Big East foe.

Kent State pulled upset 81-77 at Temple Monday after trailing by 8 at 7:53 mark; Flashes made 11-22 3's, turned ball over only seven times vs young Owls. Seton Hall won opener 83-72 over Niagara in foul fest that saw 102 FTs taken (52 by Hall, 50 for Niagara). Kent has three starters back from 21-14 team; Pirates have four starters back from 15-18 club.

Florida State forced 25 turnovers in 91-67 win over Jacksonville in its opener, but they had 20 turnovers, only 14 assists; FSU has 4 starters back from 18-16/9-9 team- they're picked to finish imid-pack in ACC. UCF lost 73-50 to Seminoles two years ago, in teams' only meeting in last five years; Knights have four starters back from 20-11/9-7 team.

Valparaiso beat Murray State 77-74 in its opener in foulfest; three of its starters played 21+ minutes. Crusaders lost all five starters from 26-8 team that won Horizon title LY and lost by 11 to Michigan State in 1st round of NCAAs. Illinois opens with wins by 17-22 points over stiffs; Illini has lost three starters from 23-13/8-10 team that began year 12-0.

Providence blew 67-60 lead with 0:55 left, lost 69-68 to their local rival Brown LY; Friars won previous four meetings by 31-27-16-24-19, so it was big upset LY. Friars beat BC in OT in opener- they trailed by 3 in OT, but made 30-36 from line despite playing two starters 40+ minutes. Brown has four starters back from LY- they won opener by 17, but is obviously moving way up in class, from Binghamton to Providence.

DePaul made 11-21 from arc, beat Grambling by 38 in opener; when you finish year before 2-18 in last 20 games, any win is good. Blue Demons brought in seven new players this year. Southern Miss was 30-44 from line in 67-51 win in opener; they've got three starters back from LY, but have new PG. Tyndall says this is deepest team he's ever coached.

Oregon State lost 78-73 at home to Coppin State Sunday, awful way to start season in which Robinson may be on hot seat; Beavers' Nelson did not turn ball over in 37 minutes, probably because he took 26 of their 59 shots, plus another 12 from line. Portland was 30-37 from line in 100-83 win over UC-Davis; Pilots have four starters back from LY's 11-21 club.

San Francisco beat an NAIA team by 38 in its opener. Both teams have four starters back from LY, Dons are #4 pick in tough WCC; Cleveland State is picked #3 in weakened Horizon.

Cal-Riverside shot 29.6% for game, 26% inside arc in 62-40 loss LY at Malibu; UCR lost its opener 77-41 at San Diego State, shooting 1-9 on arc, 8-23 from foul line. Riverside brought in JC kids to get better, but it takes them a while-- this game will be better indicator than San Diego St.

Buffalo fired Witherspoon because he never made NCAAs, brought in Bobby Hurley for his first HC job; Bulls beat Niagara last four years, by 10-8-18-6 points- they lost 82-58 in opener at Texas A&M, but it was only 8 with 10:00 left. Niagara lost opening foulfest at Seton Hall, when both sides took 50+ FTs. Eagles have 3 starters back from 19-14 club.

Marist scored just 51.5 ppg in losing first two games under new coach by 16-27 points; Red Foxes were 6-41 from arc in first two games for Bower, who has NBA experience. St Joe's won its opener at Vermont by 10; they better not be looking ahead to Saturday's game with Creighton, who beat Hawks by 29 LY. St Joe's has 3 starters back from 18-14 club.

Oregon is back from Korea after beating Georgetown by 7, great win in light of Artis' suspension (has 8 games left to serve); Ducks got to foul line 44 times, held Hoyas to 1-15 from arc. Western Carolina forced 18 turnovers in 74-67 win over NC-Asheville; they lost at Illinois by 8 LY, at Wichita State by 16, so they won't be intimidated here.
