College football odds: Week 12 opening line report

As the days get shorter, the games get more important, with the NCAA football schedule moving into Week 12, highlighted by a West Coast showdown in the Pac-12.

Stanford dealt a severe blow to Oregon’s national championship hopes in the game of the week last week, and the Cardinal (8-1 SU, 5-4 ATS) next travel downstate to meet resurgent Southern Cal (7-3, 5-5 ATS) on Saturday night at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Stanford has covered the spread in its last three games and five its last seven. More important, the Cardinal have owned the rivalry with the Trojans lately, going 5-1 SU and ATS in the last six clashes, including 3-0 SU and ATS at the Coliseum.

According to Peter Korner, founder of Nevada-based odds service The Sports Club, this game became tougher to set a line due to USC’s upswing (4-1 SU and ATS) since the firing of Lane Kiffin, with Ed Orgeron taking over as interim coach. The Trojans hammered host California 62-28 on Saturday.

“It’s a good game with a lot riding on it,” Korner said. “Our range went from pick to Stanford -3.5, and we sent out -2.5. Stanford is the better team, no doubt, but since the coaching change at USC, the Trojans have looked pretty good. USC will be challenged to score against the tough Stanford defense, but we think the game line will hold pretty well just where it is”

Texas Tech Red Raiders at Baylor Bears (-27)

Baylor (8-0 SU) is third in the nation against the spread (7-1 ATS), and the Bears are coming off a 42-14 home drubbing of Oklahoma. Baylor’s high-octane offense leads the nation, averaging a whopping 687.6 yards and 61 points a game. Baylor also has a top-10 defense, yielding just 15.4 ppg.

Texas Tech (7-3, 5-5 ATS) also has a prolific offense, churning out 530.5 ypg and 37.8 ppg. In the past two meetings, these two teams have piled up the points, with the Bears going 2-0 SU and ATS in wins of 52-45 in overtime last year and 66-42 in 2011. Both were neutral-site games at the home of the Dallas Cowboys, where Saturday’s game will also be played.

“Not much to say about Baylor games. Pretty much we go with the highest number of the oddsmakers on staff. This week it was Baylor -27, and that's what we sent out. After manhandling Oklahoma, both sharps and squares will be all over the favorite again this week. We can only see this game going up from here.”

Georgia Bulldogs at Auburn Tigers (-3.5)

Georgia (6-3 SU) was considered a national title contender at the beginning of the season, but the Bulldogs have been reduced to spoiler role for this SEC showdown, and if past performance is any guarantee of future results, they won’t cover. The Bulldogs are a meager 1-7-1 ATS this year – 122nd among the 125 FBS teams.

Meanwhile, Auburn (9-1 SU, 8-2 ATS) has made a huge turnaround from last season (3-9 SU, 4-8 ATS), with a top-10 ranking and an outside shot at making the SEC championship game (archrival Alabama stands firmly in the way).

In the Dawgs’ favor: They’ve hammered the Tigers each of the last two years, 38-0 laying 15.5 points at Auburn last season and 45-7 giving 12 at home in 2011.

“Our range was from pick to Auburn -4.5, and we sent out -3.5. My quick knee-jerk reaction after looking at it again was probably too low. Auburn has stepped it up offensively the past five, six weeks and looks to be primed for this big SEC game. Georgia is no easy task, but as far as the line goes, we could see the wise guys hopping on the home team by kickoff.”

Ball State Cardinals at Northern Illinois Huskies (-8)

Off the big-time college football grid a bit, Northern Illinois is making a bid to be a BCS buster for the second-straight year.

The unbeaten Huskies (9-0 SU, 6-3 ATS) first must secure the West Division title in the Mid-American Conference in a Wednesday night tilt with the Cardinals (9-1 SU, 7-3 ATS), with both teams unbeaten in league play (Ball State 6-0, NIU 5-0).

NIU has cashed in its last three games and five of its last six, and the Huskies have won the last four in this rivalry (2-2 ATS).

“This is a big game in the MAC and should attract some good money,” Korner said. “We had a range of Northern Illinois -6.5 to -9, and we sent out -8. Northern Illinois has been scoring at an outrageous pace the past few weeks (59 and 63 points the last two games, respectively), and we feel it will be a challenge for Ball State to keep up. Not that Ball State won't be competitive. The higher the better here. Offshores look to be a little low on this one, sitting at 5-5.5.”

College football line watch: Get Wisconsin -21 while you can

Spread to bet now

Indiana Hoosiers at Wisconsin Badgers (-21)

A handful of sharps were able to jump in quickly and pound the Wisconsin side from its very early -18.5 price. But we suspect this appetite for the Badgers is not going to be limited to sharp money.

Indeed, expect the public to rush the sports book windows in Las Vegas and unload on Wiscy with both fists as the week progresses. Especially when noting some recent spread trends which are illuminating as well action-inducing.

Specifically, the Badgers have won and covered the last three meetings vs. IU, but just saying “won” and “covered” don’t do those efforts justice, as the Badgers have scored a whopping 68 ppg in those feasts upon the Hoosiers.

In fact, the last time an IU team beat Wisconsin, George W. Bush was still early in his first term as president (2002). Since 2005, Wisconsin’s win margins in this series are 17, 35, 30, 35, 3 (in 2009, the Hoosiers’ lone cover vs. Wiscy since 2006), 63, 52, and 48 points!

Trends like those, and Wisconsin’s current spread prowess (8-1 vs. line this season), plus HC Gary Andersen’s recent pointspread exploits (now 19-3 vs. the line since last season with Utah State and the Badgers) suggests it will be one-way traffic at the sports books.

By the end of the week, Wisconsin’s price likely threatens the next “key” number at 24, and the current 21s could seem like a bargain.

Spread to wait on

Michigan Wolverines at Northwestern Wildcats (-3)

There was quick movement on this number that was originally posted at Michigan -1, as the sharps quickly jumped in and hammered Northwestern up to as much as a 3-point favorite at a handful of Nevada sports books.

We suggest that will be the only move in the Wildcats’ direction, as the public will now dictate the next price moves. It is very doubtful that any more sharp money comes in on the Northwestern side, considering the Cats’ five straight losses.

Of course, the Wolverines are looking like no bargain at the moment, with some suggesting that HC Brady “Chris Christie” Hoke might be on the hot seat. But it’s still Michigan, and the optics of seeing the Wolverines as a dog against the Wildcats could still strike an odd chord with the public.

The public is not going to move this price beyond three, indeed we expect it to drop closer to pick ‘em by kickoff. Northwestern backers might as well wait for some better value later this week.

Total to watch

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Baylor Bears

Baylor totals continue to generate quite a curiosity factor, but we wonder how the oddsmakers will react to only the second clear Bears Under of the season last week vs. Oklahoma.

Once again, there was appetite on the Over for last week’s game vs. the Sooners, as early totals at 72.5 or thereabout were bet up to as much as 75.5 at several Las Vegas books. Which has been the pattern of Baylor totals this season. No matter how high-priced by the oddsmakers, there is still an Over appetite in the marketplace.

But after falling so far beneath (53) last week vs. the Sooners, we wonder how the public will react to another total likely to be priced in the 70s vs. uptempo Texas Tech, 7-2-1 O/U itself this season.

Ohio Bobcats at Bowling Green Falcons (-10, 49)

Second place in the Mid-American Conference's East Division will be on the line Tuesday night when the Bowling Green Falcons entertain the Ohio Bobcats. Bowling Green kept its division championship hopes alive a week ago, trouncing Miami (Ohio) 45-3 behind 252 passing yards and three touchdowns from quarterback Matt Johnson. The Bobcats saw their two-game winning streak come to an abrupt halt with a 30-3 drubbing at the hands of the Buffalo Bulls.

Following a pair of narrow losses to the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Toledo Rockets, Bowling Green returned to the strategy that made it a division favorite - stifling defensive pressure. The Falcons limited Miami (Ohio) to just 228 total yards and 16 first downs while forcing three turnovers - one of which BooBoo Gates returned for a touchdown. Ohio has had little trouble putting up points this season but ran into a brick wall against the formidable Bulls.

ABOUT OHIO (6-3, 3-2 MAC): Ohio is led by senior quarterback Tyler Tettleton, who has had a remarkable season but couldn't get anything going against Buffalo. Tettleton completed just 14 of 31 passes for 126 yards while failing to throw for a touchdown for the first time since the Bobcats' season opener. It was the same kind of story for feature back Beau Blankenship, who managed just 68 yards on 20 carries with a longest rush of nine yards.

ABOUT BOWLING GREEN (6-3, 4-1 MAC): Johnson needed a strong effort against the winless RedHawks after being held without a scoring pass in each of his previous two games. The sophomore QB completed 20 of 26 passes while overcoming his first interception since a 48-7 triumph over Murray State back on Sept. 21. Second-year running back Travis Greene finished with 14 carries for 112 yards against Miami (Ohio), moving him past the 1,000 mark for the season.

The Rockets kept alive their slim hopes of a West title, trouncing Eastern Michigan 55-16 for its their fourth consecutive victory.

In addition to a pair of win streaks being at stake, Tuesday's showdown pits the stout Buffalo defense against a formidable Toledo offense. The Bulls have been sensational on the defensive side of the ball since being torched for 110 points in season-opening losses to Ohio State and Baylor, surrendering just 78 points in seven games since. They'll face a stiff test from the Rockets, who have erupted for a whopping 175 points over their last four outings.

ABOUT BUFFALO (7-2, 5-0 MAC): Bulls quarterback Joe Licata isn't a big yardage guy, but has been one of the more consistent signal callers in the division. The sophomore completed 13-of-22 passes for 169 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Ohio, and has thrown for at least one score in each of his starts this season. Branden Oliver has been the offensive star of the team, rushing for 928 yards and nine touchdowns over his past five games.

ABOUT TOLEDO (6-3, 4-1 MAC): As good as senior quarterback Terrance Owens has been this year, he wasn't accumulating many yards - until last week, that is. Owens broke out for 375 yards on 18-of-24 passing while racking up three touchdowns for the second consecutive week. Running back David Fluellen (1,067 yards, 10 touchdowns) missed last week's game against Eastern Michigan with a leg injury and is questionable for this week's game.

Ball State Cardinals at Northern Illinois Huskies (-7, 72)

To this point, Jordan Lynch and No. 21 Northern Illinois have passed every test they’ve faced during the 2013 season. However, the Huskies will face a stern challenge – maybe their toughest of the year – against visiting Ball State on Wednesday night. Northern Illinois has defeated Iowa, Purdue and a 9-1 Eastern Illinois squad, but this matchup with the Cardinals is for first place in the Mid-American Conference’s West Division.

Ball State is 6-0 in the league following last week’s 20-point victory over Central Michigan, while Northern Illinois improved to 5-0 in MAC play with a 44-point rout of Massachusetts on Nov. 2. Since then, the Huskies have been preparing for this game, which will feature two quarterbacks with impressive stats but very different styles. “You have that 'dual-threat' label now and the 'pro-style' label,” Huskies coach Rod Carey of the contrast between Lynch and Ball State’s Keith Wenning, adding that "Wenning) is a good football player.”

ABOUT BALL STATE (9-1, 6-0 MAC): The Cardinals’ only loss this season came at North Texas on Sept. 14, when the Mean Green erased a 20-3 deficit to stun Ball State 34-27. Since that game, the Cardinals have won seven in a row, including five wins by at least 18 points. Wenning has 27 touchdowns against only five interceptions this season, and Ball State’s two-headed rushing attack of Jahwan Edwards and Horactio Banks has combined for 1,344 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground.

ABOUT NORTHERN ILLINOIS (9-0, 5-0): The Huskies, who rank in the top 10 nationally in rushing yards per game (fourth, 312.7) and points per game (eighth, 44.2), have the nation’s longest conference winning streak – 22 straight victories against MAC opponents. The fuel to their engine is Lynch, who finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy balloting a season ago and could place even higher this year, with 1,871 passing yards and 19 touchdowns to go along with 1,150 rushing yards and 12 scores on the ground. While Northern Illinois’ offense gets most of the attention, its defense has yielded 24 points or less in six straight games, led by ball-hawking safety Jimmie Ward and his team-high five interceptions.

Miami (Ohio) at Kent State: What bettors need to know

Miami (Ohio) Redhawks at Kent State Golden Flashes (-17.5, 48)

Nothing but pride and the desire to stay out of the Mid-American Conference's East Division basement are on the line Wednesday night when the Kent State Golden Flashes entertain the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks at Dix Stadium. Kent State comes in with a five-game losing skid, extended Nov. 2 in a 16-7 loss to the Akron Zips. The Golden Flashes are still better off than the woeful Redhawks, who have lost all nine games they've played so far this season.

Kent State has struggled on both sides of the ball, but fared well defensively against the Zips. Akron managed just 304 yards in the game - four more than the Golden Flashes - but took advantage of five Kent State turnovers and six penalties for 60 yards. Miami (Ohio) hasn't had anything positive to take from its previous two games, losing to the Ohio Bobcats and Bowling Green Falcons by a combined score of 86-19.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPNU
LINE: The Golden Flashes are installed as 17 1/2-point favorites, with the over/under set at 48.
WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the high-20s under clear skies with wind blowing diagonally out of the southwest at 9 mph.

ABOUT MIAMI (OHIO) (0-9, 0-5 MAC): It has been a difficult senior season for Redhawks quarterback Austin Boucher, who has surpassed the 200-yard plateau just once in nine games. He was replaced in last week's loss by sophomore Drew Kummer, who went 9-for-19 for 100 yards in his first career start. Running back Austin Gearing recorded a season-high 108 rushing yards Oct. 5 against Central Michigan, but has just 52 yards in four games since.

ABOUT KENT STATE (2-8, 1-5 MAC): The Golden Flashes won't be appearing in the postseason, but all is not lost. They've received surprisingly good results from freshman quarterback Colin Reardon, who has thrown for 1,597 yards and 11 touchdowns but was intercepted three times in the loss to Akron. Running back Traiyon Durham hasn't been all that productive from a yardage standpoint but has scored in each of his past two games.

TRENDS:

* Redhawks are 1-4 ATS in their last five conference games.
* Golden Flashes are 7-16-1 in their last 24 games following an SU loss.
* Under is 6-1 in Miami (Ohio)'s last seven road games vs. teams with losing home records.

Beyond the BCS: Capping college football's small conferences

Team to watch: Utah State Aggies (5-4 SU, 6-3 ATS)

This week: -13.5 at UNLV

Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton is out for the season, but backup Darell Garretson is doing just fine, especially after getting one start under his belt. In his last two games, the freshman has completed 43 of 64 passes for 514 yards and four touchdowns with just one interception. The Aggies beat New Mexico and Hawaii by a combined score of 92-20 in those two contests.

On the other side of the ball, Utah State starts seven seniors and three juniors. The lone sophomore of the experienced unit, Kyler Fackrell, earned Mountain West Defender of the Week honors for his performance against Hawaii. UNLV head coach Bobby Hauck praised his opponents' defense for disguising its formations and throwing off quarterbacks with different looks.

The Aggies are 6-1-1 ATS in their last eight conference games and 5-1 ATS in their last six against the Rebels.

Team to beware: Tulsa Golden Hurricane (2-6 SU, 1-7 ATS)

This week: +17 at East Carolina

The Golden Hurricane have scored 22 total points in their current two-game slide. Head coach Bill Blankenship apologized to fans after last week's dreadful 34-15 Homecoming loss to Texas-San Antonio. Tulsa linebacker Trent Martin is questionable after missing the last two games due to a knee injury. Despite playing in five of eight games he is still third on the team with 4.5 tackles for loss.

Tulsa is 1-7 ATS in its last eight overall and 1-4 ATS in its last five road games. The Golden Hurricane may have a hard time reversing those trends because this doesn’t look like a great matchup for them. Taking to the ground is their strength on offense but they are going up against an East Carolina defense that is giving up just 85.3 rushing yards per game.

Total team: UL Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns (6-2 SU, 5-3 O/U)

This week: 67.5 vs. Troy

Louisiana-Lafayette is averaging 43.7 points per outing in its current six-game winning streak. It scored 35 in the second half of last week's 49-35 win over New Mexico State and running back Alonzo Harris ran for five touchdowns. Troy, Thursday's opponent, may be without stud safety Camren Hudson, who will be a game-time decision. For ULL, linebacker Chris Hill (sixth leading tackler on the team with 30, including three for loss) missed last week’s game against New Mexico State due to a concussion and is questionable.

The over is 6-0-1 in UL Lafayette's last seven home games. It is 14-2 in Troy's last 16 overall, 4-1 in its last five on the road, and 8-2 in its last 10 conference games.
