Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

    13) Vanderbilt 34, Florida 17-- Commodores hadn't beaten Florida since 1988, hadn't won in Gainesville since 1945, which is also the last year the Cubs played in the World Series. Go figure. Gators are 4-5 and look like a longshot to play in a bowl game. Yikes.

    12) Texas 47, West Virginia 40 OT-- Mack Brown's first OT win; Horns converted 10-23 on 3rd down, have now won six games in row. McCoy had 283 passing yards and three TDs. Why is West Virginia in this league?

    11) Duke 38, NC State 20-- Wolfpack led this game with 4:00 left, then the Blue Devils scored three TDs in a bizarre 0:26 span to move to 7-2. DeVon Edwards had a kick return for a TD and two pick-6's, in one of the greatest days any defensive player has ever had, ever.

    10) Celtics 111, Heat 110-- Boston scored five points in last 0:01.6 to steal a game in South Beach and win its third game in a row after an 0-4 start. Not a lot of excuses for a team losing when they led by 4 with 0:03 left.

    9) UCLA 31, Arizona 26-- Bruins' freshman Myles Jack ran ball six times for 120 yards; he's a defensive player!!! Kid was playing both ways like a damn high school player. Jack had eight tackles and a fumble recovery- very good. .

    8) Alabama 38, LSU 17-- SEC coordinators make almost $1M a year; LSU had ball on 1-yard line with that kid Hill at RB, a future NFL star, and they give it to a fullback who fumbled and was never seen again for the rest of the night. Bama might've won anyway, but 7-0 would've been a nice start.

    7) Pitt 28, Notre Dame 21-- If I ran NBC Sports and was throwing my cash at South Bend, I'd sure as hell want a better product than what they're putting out on field. 18-38 passing, in this day and age? They were lucky to beat the Naval Academy last week. Underdog is now 8-0-1 vs spread in this series.

    6) Manhattan 99, LaSalle 90 (2 OT)-- Explorers have four starters back from LY's Sweet 16 team, so this is an excellent win for the Jaspers, picked to win the MAAC this winter. Manhattan made 12-27 shots behind the arc.

    5) Pacers 96, Nets 91-- On the Nets TV commercials, "championship" gets said like every other second. Now they're 2-4 and Indiana in 7-0; doubt Indy touted themselves as league champs in their ad campaigns this fall.

    4) Nebraska 17, Michigan 13-- Wolverines had minus-21 rushing yards, as sacks count as rushing attempts; in their last two games, Michigan, the team Bo Schembechler made famous, has minus-69 rushing yards. Oy.

    3) San Diego State 34, San Jose State 30-- Nice comeback win for Aztecs, who trailed 30-20 with 8:00 left, but RECRUIT A KICKER!!!! They missed seven consecutive FGs and five straight PATs before finally making a PAT in 4th quarter. Its not that hard; go try out some soccer players.

    2) Virginia Tech 42, Miami 24-- Hurricanes got beat twice by Florida State, once last week, again Saturday, as they ran ball for only 28 yards with star RB Johnson out for year (leg). Hokies outgained Miami 549-352 after losing to Duke/Boston College the last two weeks.

    1) Texas A&M 51, Mississippi State 41-- Johnny Manziel is must-watch TV; kid was 30-39/446 yards, with three of nine incompletions picked off, so he is fun to watch and never dull- he takes chances. You watch Alabama play and then realize A&M lost to them 49-42. Very, very good player.

      CFL
      Armadillo's Write-Up

      First Round

Montreal (8-10) @ Hamilton (10-8)—These teams played three times in final seven weeks of season. Alouettes recovered from 2-5 start to make playoffs, winning four of last six games, covering nine of last 12, but they lost two of three vs Hamilton this year, losing 28-26 (+1) in Week 13, then 27-24 (-5.5) here two weeks ago- they beat TiCats 36-5 (-1.5) three weeks ago in Quebec. Home side won all three series games and last six overall in series. Montreal covered seven of last eight games as an underdog- they’re 4-5 SU on road this season, losing by 11-3-22-2-3 points. TiCats won four of last five games, are 2-4 as home favorites this year, but won five of last six SU at “home”, with last three home wins by total of 11 points. Last six Hamilton games, last three Alouette games all stayed under the total. Under is 11-7 in last 18 series games.

BC Lions (11-7) @ Saskatchewan (11-7)—These two teams also played three times in last seven weeks, actually three times in five weeks (Weeks 13-15-17). Roughriders beat Lions 31-17 (+3) on road, then 35-14 (-4) at home to win season series 2-1 and grab home field here, after Lions won first meeting 24-22 (+6) in Regina. Streaky Saskatchewan’s season: 8-1 start, then $l, 3W and mow two more losses- they’re just 2-3 in last five home games, with wins by 5-21 points. BC allowed 78 points in losing last two road games; they upset Calgary in meaningless season finale last week- they’re 1-5 vs spread when getting points this season. Roughriders covered just two of last ten when giving points. Last 10 series games and 18 of last 22 meetings stayed under the total, as did six of last seven Rider games, and five of last eight BC games overall.

CFL Playoffs: What bettors need to know
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Montreal Aouettes at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-3, 52)

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats enter the playoffs on a high note as they prepare to host the Montreal Alouettes in the East Semifinal on Sunday. Hamilton won four of its last five games to finish the regular season 8-2 against East Division opponents, including two wins in three contests against Montreal. Tiger-Cats quarterback Henry Burris led the league with 4,925 passing yards and running back C.J. Gable was named East Division Most Outstanding Rookie.

The Alouettes season began with Anthony Calvillo at quarterback and Dan Hawkins as coach. With Hawkins fired and Calvillo injured, Montreal finished the season with a very different look under new pivot Troy Smith, but defense remains its most reliable asset. Alouettes linebacker Chip Cox was named East Division Most Outstanding Defensive Player after leading the league with 114 tackles and adding 12 sacks and four interceptions for a defense that allowed a league-low 88.4 rushing yards per game.

      TV: 1 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (8-10): Smith has yet to reach 1,000 passing yards in the CFL and his inexperience shows in his accuracy: a 60-for-114 completion rate with five interceptions. Smith has plenty of targets available, including S.J. Green, Arland Bruce and rookie Duron Carter, who finished the regular season with 909 receiving yards despite making his CFL debut in August. Montreal’s defense was tied for the league-lead in interceptions with 24, with a league-best seven caught by cornerback Geoff Tisdale.

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (10-8): Gable recorded 1,380 yards from scrimmage despite missing time early on due to injuries. Three Hamilton receivers - Bakari Grant, Andy Fantuz and Greg Ellingson - finished with at least 800 receiving yards. Mark Beswick was named Most Outstanding Special Teams Player with a league-high 24 special teams tackles, while linebacker Brandon Isaac has four sacks since joining the team mid-season.

      TRENDS:

      * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Hamilton.
      * Alouettes are 2-5 ATS in their last seven meetings in Hamilton.
      * Under is 10-4 in Alouettes last 14 vs. East.
      * Tiger-Cats are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games overall.

      EXTRA POINTS:

      1. Hamilton KR Brandon Banks returned a missed field goal 107 yards for a touchdown in the last game between the Tiger-Cats and the Alouettes.

      2. Alouettes RB Tyrell Sutton rushed for 185 yards in the last two games against the Tiger-Cats.

      3. Hamilton was 6-3 playing its home games at Alumni Stadium in Guelph this season.

BC Lions at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-4, 51.5)

Quarterback Travis Lulay and running back Andrew Harris have given the BC Lions hope heading into Sunday’s West Semifinal at the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Lulay returned to action briefly in the final regular-season game, taking 13 snaps to test his injured shoulder and completing 3-of-4 passes while adding a 1-yard touchdown run. Harris finished the season two rushing yards short of 1,000 after recording 102 in his last game, one week after Stefan Logan ran for 121 yards for BC.

BC will need every facet of its offense in top condition against a stingy Roughriders' defense that recorded 57 sacks, 24 interceptions and allowed a league-low 20 passing touchdowns. Saskatchewan’s defensive line of John Chick, Tearrius George, Ricky Foley and trade addition Alex Hall have 30 sacks between them. Roughriders quarterback Darian Durant (4,154 passing yards) and running back Kory Sheets (1,598 rushing yards) were both rested for the final game of the regular season and are healthy heading into the playoffs.

      TV: 4:30 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE LIONS (11-7): Linebacker Adam Bighill led the team with 92 tackles and nine sacks despite missing a couple weeks with a sprained ankle. Bighill and cornerback Cord Parks (six interceptions) form the backbone of a defense that limited opponents to 245 passing yards per game. Slotback Nick Moore established himself as one of the league’s top receivers with his first 1,000-yard season, totalling 1,105 receiving yards.

ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (11-7): Three Saskatchewan receivers - Chris Getzlaf, Weston Dressler and Taj Smith - finished the regular season with at least 1,000 receiving yards. All-time receiving leader Geroy Simon, who spent the majority of his career with the Lions before joining Saskatchewan last offseason, was limited to his lowest yard total since 2001, with 565 yards on 40 catches. Defensive back Dwight Anderson has 53 tackles and a team-leading five interceptions.

      TRENDS:

      * Under is 5-0 in the last five meetings in Saskatchewan.
      * Lions are 4-11 ATS in their last 15 road games.
      * Roughriders are 0-3-1 ATS in their last four Division Semifinals games.
      * Over is 6-0 in Lions last six playoff games.

      EXTRA POINTS:

      1. Lions KR Tim Brown finished with 1,901 combined return yards - second in the league. Brown also scored one kick-return touchdown.

      2. Roughriders LB Renauld Williams, who led the team with seven sacks before being injured, could return if Saskatchewan makes it to the Grey Cup final.

      3. Saskatchewan was 6-3 at home during the regular season; BC was 3-6 on the road.

Spurs at Knicks: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at New York Knicks (+2.5, 195)

J.R. Smith makes his season debut when the host New York Knicks attempt to snap the three-game winning streak of the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday. Smith, who won the NBA’s Sixth Man Award last season, sat out the first five games due to violating the league’s drug policy and will be limited to 30 minutes, according to New York coach Mike Woodson. “We’ve just got to make sure that mentally he’s there,” Woodson told reporters. “And I can’t burn him physically.”

Smith, who will come off the bench Sunday, averaged 18.1 points last season and underwent knee surgery in July and is still rounding himself into playing shape. The Spurs recorded a 76-74 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Friday and are allowing just 88 points per game during their winning streak. Tony Parker had 18 points and is averaging 19.3 points and 6.7 assists.

TV: Noon ET, KENS (San Antonio), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE SPURS (5-1): Veteran guard Manu Ginobili is struggling and is just 8-of-31 from the field while averaging seven points over the past three games. He is just 1-of-13 from 3-point range during the stretch and 5-of-25 on the season while averaging 10.7 points. Frontcourt star Tim Duncan had a subpar game against Golden State with just eight points on 3-of-11 shooting after averaging 19.3 points over the previous three games.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (2-3): Andrea Bargnani made his presence felt with 25 points, eight rebounds and five blocks in Friday’s victory over Charlotte. New York will be counting heavily on Bargnani with starting center Tyson Chandler out four-to-six weeks with a broken leg. Acquired from Toronto in the offseason, Bargnani was struggling before the breakout performance. “Don’t be hesitant and just play my game and go out there and do what I’ve always done all these years,” Bargnani explained afterward. “I got to be more aggressive on offense.”

        TRENDS:

        * Home team is 4-1-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
        * Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in New York.
        * Spurs are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
        * Underdog is 3-1-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

        BUZZER BEATERS:

        1. New York won both of last season’s meetings and is 26-14 against the Spurs at Madison Square Garden.

        2. The Knicks are trying to avoid losing three straight home games for the first time since Jan. 2012.

        3. Spurs F Matt Bonner (calf) could miss his third straight game.

                    Armadillo's Write-Up

                    Sunday, November 10

UMass has four starters back from 21-12 team that went 9-7 in A-16 a year ago, but this is their first game; BC lost tough 82-78 OT game less than 48 hours ago at Providence- four Eagle starters played 36+ minutes in that game. UMass beat BC 82-46 in last meeting two years ago, after losing three previous series meetings. Bigger game for UMass?

NC-Wilmington was down 48-12 at half Friday, lost 82-39 at Iowa in an ugly season opener; Seahawks have four starters back from LY's 10-20 team- they were 2-23 from arc Friday, 29% inside it. This is the opener for Iowa State, which lost three starters from LY's 23-12 team, and is also without senior F Ejim, one of its two best players.

Eastern Kentucky-Youngstown are both playing third day in row; EKU runs lot of Princeton stuff, which is hard to prep for in less than a day. Colonels won first two games by 22-8 points, allowing 60.5 ppg. YSU also won its first two games, but needed OT to beat FIU Saturday, with three starters playing 38+ minutes and a fourth playing 35.

Elon pummeled a D-III team Friday, so this is its opener; they have all five starters back from 21-12 team that went 13-5 in league but wound up losing four of last six games overall. Elon is picked to win SoCon; if you're picked ahead of Davidson, you're not bad. Marist lost at Stony Brook Friday by 16, taking more 3's (6-27) than 2's (10-26).

Iowa is expected to be top 25 team despite losing Oglesby for 6 weeks; Hawkeyes were up 36 at half in opening win over UNCW. Omaha was down 13 at half in opener at Northern Illinois, rallied to win by hoop, as Omaha was 27-32 from foul line. Carter was only one of its guys to go more than 26:00 Friday, so talent will be more of issue than fatigue.

Jacksonville State lost opener Friday by 7 at Bradley; Gamecocks had three guys play 33+ minutes- they've got three starters back from LY, when they were 17-11, 8-8 in OVC. Illinois cruised in its opener by 16; 11 guys played double figures minutes, no one more than 26. Illinois beat Eastern Kentucky by 13 LY, last time they played an OVC team.

Tenn-Martin lost by 18 at Wyoming Friday, but tuened ball over only seven times; Skyhawks have four starters back from 9-21 team that was 5-11 in OVC- they're running into Colorado team here that lost 72-60 in Dallas to Baylor Friday, going 2-19 from the arc in game they never led. Three Buffaloes played 32+ minutes. One Martin kid played more than 27 minutes at Wyoming.
