        Wednesday Tips

        November 19, 2013

Heat at Magic - 7:05 PM EST

        Miami: 8-3 SU, 5-6 ATS
        Orlando: 4-6 SU, 5-5 ATS

The Heat finishes off a back-to-back set with a short trip to central Florida. Miami swept the four-game season series from Orlando last season, but the Magic lost two of those games by a combined three points. Following consecutive defeats to the 76ers and Nets, the Heat has won each of their past two road contests in convincing fashion at Toronto and Charlotte. Miami had scored at least 100 points in its first nine games before being limited to 97 points in Saturday's away triumph at Charlotte.

Orlando completes a three-game homestand after dropping a 108-100 decision to Dallas on Saturday night as a short underdog. The Magic has failed to cover in five consecutive games, as Orlando started the season at 5-0 ATS. During this 1-4 SU stretch, Orlando has been limited to 94 points or less three times, while going 5-2 to the 'under' in the last seven trips to the court.

Blazers at Bucks - 8:05 PM EST

        Portland: 9-2 SU, 8-3 ATS
        Milwaukee: 2-7 SU, 4-5 ATS

The Blazers look to close out their four-game road trip unbeaten after taking care of Boston, Toronto, and Brooklyn by at least eight point margins. Portland is riding a seven-game winning streak, while covering in eight of nine victories this season. Since losing the opener at Phoenix, the Blazers have won five straight road contests, but are listed as an away favorite for just the second time, with the first occurrence coming at Boston, a 109-96 victory.

Milwaukee is down many key players with Larry Sanders, Caron Butler, and Brandon Knight already missing multiple games this season. The Bucks are in the midst of a five-game skid, as Milwaukee has scored 95 points or less in seven of nine games, all losses. In spite of all the woes, the Bucks own a 4-2 ATS record this season as a single-digit underdog, while winning four straight meetings against the Blazers.

Clippers at Wolves - 8:05 PM EST

Los Angeles: 7-4 SU, 6-5 ATS
        Minnesota: 7-5 SU, 8-4 ATS

The Clippers head on the highway for a pair of games against teams they have beaten at home already. Los Angeles travels to Oklahoma City on Thursday, but takes on another Northwest Division squad on Wednesday with a visit to the Target Center. The Clips couldn't finish their most recent homestand unbeaten, as Memphis continued its ownership of Los Angeles with a 106-102 road triumph. Los Angeles led off that homestand with a 109-107 victory over Minnesota, but the Wolves cashed as 6 ½-point underdogs.

The Wolves come off of Tuesday's road defeat at Washington, as Minnesota has won five of six games at the Target Center this season. In their last three home victories, the Wolves have eclipsed the 106-point mark each time, but they have beaten only two above .500 teams at home (Thunder and Mavericks). Minnesota has had its issues against Los Angeles recently, losing six straight meetings, including each of the last three at home.

Rockets at Mavericks - 9:35 PM EST

        Houston: 8-4 SU, 6-5-1 ATS
        Dallas: 7-4 SU, 7-4 ATS

The Rockets are rounding into form after putting together their second winning streak of three games following last night's home rout of the Celtics. Houston goes for its second win over Dallas this season after outlasting the Mavericks, 113-105 on November 1 to cash as 6 ½-point favorites. The Rockets attempted 51 free throws in that contest, compared to just 25 for the Mavs, while James Harden led Houston with a game-high 34 points. Kevin McHale's team has won three of five games away from the Toyota Center, while hitting four straight 'overs' on the highway.

The Mavs own a perfect 5-0 record at the American Airlines Center, but failed to cover as 11 ½-point favorites in a 97-94 victory over Philadelphia on Monday. That non-cover snapped a four-game ATS hot streak for Dallas, while falling to 6-1 ATS this season in the favorite role. Dallas has taken care of business against Houston at home recently, winning each of the last four meetings.

Grizzlies at Warriors - 10:35 PM EST

        Memphis: 6-5 SU, 3-7-1 ATS
        Golden State: 8-3, 6-4-1 ATS

The Grizzlies have quietly won three straight games as Memphis goes for a California sweep on Wednesday at Golden State. Memphis grabbed a pair of victories at Staples Center over the Lakers and Clippers, while taking care of the Kings by 11 points as a short favorite. Now, the Grizzlies go for their second win over the Warriors this season after routing Golden State at FedEx Forum on November 9 by a 108-90 count, the 10th consecutive victory in the series.

Golden State is rolling in the midst of a four-game winning streak, coming off a home-and-home sweep of lowly Utah. Mark Jackson's club is undefeated at Oracle Arena this season with a 5-0 record, but failed to cover in their last two home contests against the Thunder and Jazz. The Warriors will be without sharpshooter Stephen Curry, who is out with a concussion, which was suffered in Monday's victory at Utah.

Pacers at Knicks: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Pacers at New York Knicks (+6.5, 186.5)

The New York Knicks look to snap a five-game home losing streak and a three-game slide overall when they host the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday. New York's difficult start to the season continued Tuesday in Detroit, where they fell behind right after halftime and never led again in a 92-86 setback. Carmelo Anthony scored 25 points but was 8-for-20 from the floor and had seven turnovers.

The Pacers have had plenty of time to ****** their first loss of the season, a 110-94 setback at Chicago on Saturday. All five Indiana starters reached double figures but leading scorer Paul George was held to a season-low 12 points on 3-of-14 shooting. The home team won all four meetings between the Pacers and Knicks last season, and New York has won five of the last six encounters at Madison Square Garden.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN, FSN Indiana, MSG (New York)

Line: The line opened at New York +5.5 and has been bet to +6.5. The total opened at 188 and is now down to 186.5.

ABOUT THE PACERS (9-1): The loss to the Bulls was a severe departure from the norm for Indiana. It was coming off a 27-point win against Milwaukee the night before which represented Indiana's best offensive showing and largest margin of victory this season. In addition, no Pacers opponent had scored more than 91 points in the first nine games before Chicago broke out on the strength of an 11-for-19 showing from long range.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (3-7): Amid a three-game losing streak, New York has to try to find positives where it can. Perhaps one came Tuesday night in Detroit with the play of J.R. Smith, who finally showed some scoring punch after being thrust back into a sixth man role. Smith, who had 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting off the bench versus the Pistons, was a dismal 12-for-53 from the floor in four games as a starter.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Favorite is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.
                  * Home team is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.
                  * Under is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings in New York.
                  * Pacers are 1-5 ATS in the last six meetings in New York.

                  BUZZER BEATERS:

                  1. New York did not lose its seventh game last season until its 26th game.

                  2. Indiana C Roy Hibbert has 38 points, 20 rebounds and 11 blocked shots in his last two games.

                  3. Knicks F Metta World Peace (knee) and PG Raymond Felton (back) are both considered day-to-day.

                          Inside the Paint - Thursday

                          November 21, 2013

The NBA regular season is just over three weeks old and the biggest surprise of the season has been Portland, who has started the season 10-2. The Trail Blazers have won eight straight games and they’ve gone 7-1 against the spread during this span.

Is Portland for real? We asked that question to VegasInsider.com NBA handicapper Kevin Rogers and he answered. “I believe the Trail Blazers are a solid team and even though they haven’t played superior competition during this streak, you have to give any team credit for sweeping a four-game road trip.”

“I feel that the oddsmakers didn’t think much of Portland this season because of last year’s record (33-49). What people forget is that the team was depleted by injuries and they closed their season with 13 consecutive losses.”
The LVH SuperBook posted Portland’s win total at 38 ½ victories and the team is on a great pace to exceed those expectations.

Thursday’s betting card features another double-header on TNT, which starts at 8:05 p.m. ET.

                          Let’s break down the games.

Los Angeles Clippers (8-4 SU, 7-5 ATS) at Oklahoma City (7-3 SU, 4-6 ATS)

These teams squared off on Nov. 13 from the Staples Center and the Clippers defeated the Thunder 111-103 as 3 ½-point home favorites. That game was highlighted with a scuffle with 6 seconds left in the first-half that resulted in two ejections -- Serge Ibaka of the Thunder and Matt Barnes of the Clippers.

The Thunder led 62-53 at the break but the altercation woke up the Clippers, who outscored OKC 58-43 in the final two quarters. Clippers forward Blake Griffin had 22 points and 12 rebounds in the victory, while Kevin Durant posted 33 points and 10 assists for the Thunder in a losing effort.

Including the win over OKC, the Clippers are 5-1 SU and 3-3 ATS in their last six games. Last night, Los Angeles earned a solid 102-98 road win over Minnesota as a two-point underdog. Point guard Chris Paul set an NBA record in the win with 12 straight double-doubles to start a season, passing Magic Johnson’s mark of 11 consecutive double-doubles to begin the 1990-91 season.

Despite the hot run, the Clippers have been installed as 5 ½-point underdogs against Oklahoma City on Thursday. The line seems right, according to VegasInsider.com NBA handicapper Stephen Nover. He explained, “This is a big early-season revenge spot for the rested Thunder. The Thunder didn't have Ibaka for the second half in that game and also was missing Kendrick Perkins, who was attending his grandfather's funeral. Both will be in action tonight for the Thunder, who have been idle for the past two days. Oklahoma City has been pointing to this matchup ever since that controversial game eight days ago against the Clippers. The Thunder are healthy this time around and rested.”

Oklahoma City hasn’t lost at home in four games at home this season but it has burned bettors with a 1-3 ATS record.

The Clippers have been underdogs three times this season and they’ve gone 2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS, with the lone loss coming to Miami (102-97). Los Angeles is 1-1 SU and 2-0 ATS when playing on zero days rest this season.

The total on this game opened at 212 and dropped quickly to 210. The ‘over’ cashed in the meeting last Wednesday and is on a 4-0 run in this series.

Chicago (6-3 SU, 4-5 ATS) at Denver (4-6 SU, 5-5 ATS)

Chicago will begin its annual “Circus Trip” on Thursday, which will have the team playing six straight games on the road. For tonight’s matchup, the Bulls opened as one-point road favorites against the Nuggets and some bettors could be scratching their heads on this number.

Playing at the Pepsi Center is always a tough out, no matter who starts for Denver. The Nuggets dropped their first two home games of the season but have won three in a row since then. It should also be noted the two setbacks came against the Trail Blazers and Spurs, who have a combined record of 20-3. During this winning streak at home, the Nuggets are averaging 112.3 PPG, which has helped the ‘over’ cash in all three games.

When you look at Chicago, you can’t deny that the team has been a bad investment on the road this season. The Bulls are 1-3 both SU and ATS, the lone win coming against Toronto (96-80) on Nov. 15.
Another factor that might have you leaning to the home ‘dog is the recent history between the pair. Denver has won four straight in this series and it owns a 12-1 record in the last 13 games at home against Chicago. The ‘over’ is on a 3-1 run between the pair.

If you toss out the home-away trends and history, you can also make a strong case for Chicago based on the current form of both teams. The Bulls have won five straight (4-1 ATS) behind a defense that has held opponents to 81.8 PPG during this run.

On the side of the defensive spectrum is Denver, who has given up 122 and 115 points in their last two games, which were losses to the Rockets and Thunder respectively. Chicago doesn’t have an offense comparable to Houston or Oklahoma City and the unit will be short-handed for the upcoming trip with Jimmy Butler (toe) staying home. The former Marquette standout was averaging 11.2 PPG this season and helped former MVP Derrick Rose overcome his early struggles (15 PPG) this season.

Clippers at Thunder, Bulls at Nuggets: What bettors need to know
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

L.A. Clippers at Oklahoma City Thunder (-5.5, 210)

Chris Paul is setting NBA records as he drags the Los Angeles Clippers to the top half of the Western Conference. Paul will look to notch his 13th straight points-assists double-double to begin the season when the Clippers visit the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday. Paul scored 16 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter and handed out 11 assists on Wednesday to guide Los Angeles past the Minnesota Timberwolves in the opener of a two-game trip.

The Thunder will be looking for some revenge after suffering a 111-103 defeat to the Clippers in Los Angeles on Nov. 13. Oklahoma City fell again the next night but took its last two, including a 115-113 victory over Denver on Monday that kicked off a six-game homestand. That win left coach Scott Brooks and star Kevin Durant upset about the defensive effort. “We’ve got to do a better job of being a defensive team,” Brooks said. “We have to play better defense.”

                              TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT.

LINE: The Thunder opened as -5 home faves and have been bet to -5.5. The total opened at 211.5 and have move down to 210.

                              POWER RANKINGS: L.A. Clippers (-12.6) - Oklahoma City (-12.4) + home court (-3) = -3.2 Oklahoma City

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (8-4, 7-5 ATS): Paul was the best player on the floor in the final minutes at Minnesota, scoring 13 in a row for Los Angeles at one
point in the last four minutes to spark the team to a 102-98 victory. Paul went for 14 points and 16 assists in the first meeting with the Thunder but was overshadowed by teammate Matt Barnes, who got into a shoving match with Oklahoma City forward Serge Ibaka that left both ejected and was followed by some profane tweets from Barnes in the locker room. Barnes will not be a concern on Thursday, as he did not travel with the team on the road trip after suffering an eye contusion on Monday.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (7-3, 4-6 ATS): That skirmish between Barnes and Ibaka ended up being much worse for Oklahoma City, which squandered a nine-point halftime lead. Ibaka had been 6-for-6 from the floor in that first half before being tossed with six seconds left in the second quarter, and the team is increasing his role in the offense as it works in a smaller lineup. Ibaka is shooting 60.3 percent from the floor over his last five games but was held to six points on 3-of-7 shooting against the Nuggets on Wednesday.

Chicago Bulls at Denver Nuggets (+1, 107)

The Chicago Bulls typically have trouble in Denver but bring a five-game winning streak into Thursday’s matchup against the Nuggets. Denver has won each of its last six home games against Chicago dating back to the 2005-06 season and is averaging 112.3 points during a three-game home winning streak. The Bulls, who are beginning a six-game road trip, are playing terrific defense and allowing an average of 81.8 points during their winning streak.

Derrick Rose continues to search for his MVP form in his comeback season and he will need to be on top of his game to deal with Denver point guard Ty Lawson, who is averaging 22 points and 8.6 assists. “Obviously, that’s a matchup that a lot of people want to see,” Nuggets coach Brian Shaw said. “Ty’s playing at a high level. Derrick Rose, we know what he’s capable of as well as a former MVP.” Rose is averaging just 15 points and 4.5 assists while shooting 34.4 percent from the field.

Butler is averaging 11.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals and either Mike Dunleavy or Kirk Hinrich will move into a starting role. “It’s part of the game,” Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau said prior to Wednesday’s practice. “But we have more than enough. I’ve been pleased with our bench play. So the guys that are called upon, they have to be ready.”

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (4-6, 5-5 ATS): Guard Nate Robinson is ailing with a wrist injury at the worst possible time – with a game against Chicago arriving.
Robinson was a playoff standout for the Bulls last season while Rose was sidelined and he desperately wants to play against his former teammates. “I play through all injuries if I can,” Robinson said. “I love the game too much.” Robinson scored 24 points in his Denver debut but has reached double digits just twice since and has scored only 25 total points in the Nuggets’ last six games.
