    Inside the Paint - Monday

    November 11, 2013

The NBA 2013-14 regular season is almost two weeks old and it’s fair to say that we’ve had our fair share of early surprises.

According to the oddsmakers at the LVH SuperBook in Las Vegas, Philadelphia and Phoenix weren’t expected to be competitive this season. The 76ers (16 ½) and Suns (21 ½) had the lowest win totals posted in the league yet both teams sit atop their divisions.

I expect the pair to cool off eventually but at least they’re not Utah, who is by far the worst team in the league. Anytime you have John Lucas III and Jamall Tinsley splitting time at point guard, you know you’re not a good team. Hopefully rookie Trey Burke gets healthy and helps the league’s worst offense (87.7 points per game).

While the Jazz are winless, the Indiana Pacers remain the lone unbeaten team in the league at 7-0. More importantly the club is 5-2 against the spread, which has been helped by the league’s best scoring defense (85.3 PPG).

There are still plenty of games to be played but Indiana is certainly clicking right now in what looks like a top-heavy Eastern Conference.

    Monday’s card features nine games.

Atlanta at Charlotte: The Hawks have won eight straight (7-1 ATS) against the Bobcats. Atlanta opened as the road favorite (2 ½) and it could be hard for bettors to lay points with a team that is 1-3 on the road this season. Charlotte hasn’t dropped back-to-back games this season. With that being said, the Bobcats haven’t played since losing to the Knicks 101-91 on Friday. Total players should make a note that Atlanta has watched the ‘over’ go 5-1 this season, 4-0 on the road.

Memphis at Indiana: Last season, the Pacers beat the Grizzlies 82-81 on the road and 88-83 at home. Oddsmakers are expecting another defensive battle here tonight with the total hovering between 183 and 184 points. Memphis will be looking for its first road win of the season (0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS). Indiana has gone 4-0 at home but it’s just 2-2 ATS, getting backdoored twice with healthy spreads.

San Antonio at Philadelphia: The Spurs are listed as road favorites over the 76ers and they’ll be facing their former assistant Brett Brown, who is now the head coach of Philadelphia. He’s done a great job so far with the 76ers and they’ll be facing a squad with no rest as San Antonio ripped New York by 31 points (120-89) at MSG on Sunday. The Spurs are 1-1 SU and 0-2 ATS in back-to-back spots this season and most would expect head coach Greg Popovich to rest a couple starters. Philadelphia is 3-2 both SU and ATS at home, two of the wins coming against the Heat and Bulls.

Orlando at Boston: The Celtics beat the Magic 91-89 on Friday and followed up that upset with a 111-110 buzzer beater victory over Miami on Saturday. Boston was listed as an underdog in both games and is now laying points to Orlando on Monday. The Magic have dropped two straight and are 0-3 on the road this season. Orlando’s inability to score lately has helped the ‘under’ cash in four straight games.

Cleveland at Chicago: The Bulls earned a much needed win on Saturday albeit against Utah, 97-73. Point guard Derrick Rose hasn’t looked sharp for Chicago so far but the team hasn’t lost at home (2-0) this season and they still have a solid defense. Cleveland is hit or miss with its offense and bettors should be aware that the Cavs have failed to cover in six straight games. The Bulls are 9-1 SU and 7-3 ATS in the last 10 encounters between the pair. Chicago is listed as an eight-point favorite at most betting shops, which seems a tad high for a team that is 1-4 ATS.

Toronto at Houston: After starting the season 3-0, the Rockets are 1-3 in their last four which includes back-to-back home losses to the Lakers (99-98) and Clippers (107-94). The good news for Houston is that Toronto visits tonight. The Rockets have won six straight at home against the Raptors and are 15-3 all-time in games played in Houston. Toronto has gone 1-3 SU and 2-2 ATS on the road this season but the three losses were decided by seven points or less.

Denver at Utah: This game has pass written all over it. The Jazz lack the talent while the Nuggets don’t have any chemistry right now. Something has to give tonight since Denver has had trouble stopping anybody on defense (105.2 PPG) but Utah’s offense is pathetic. Adding to the Nuggets’ problems will be the loss of JaVale McGee (leg) to the lineup. Somewhere George Karl is smiling.

Detroit at Portland: The Trail Blazers have won and covered four of their last five games, which includes a 2-1 record at home. The Pistons have dropped two straight (Pacers, Thunder) and three of four, yet the point-spread on this matchup seems a little low. Detroit has only played one road game (0-1) this season with tonight’s matchup being the first of a four-game trip on the West Coast. The Pistons haven’t won in Portland since the 2006-07 season.

Minnesota at L.A. Clippers: The Timberwolves close out their two-game trip to the Staples Center tonight and if they shoot like they did last night, the sweep is very likely. Minnesota ran past the Lakers from the opening tip on Sunday, scoring 47 points in the first quarter en route to a 113-90 road win. The Wolves are 0-1 with no rest this season but no travel was needed for tonight. The Clippers finished their three-game road trip on Saturday with a 107-94 win at Houston, which came after losses to the Magic and Heat. The ‘under’ cashed in all three games. Los Angeles has gone 2-0 at home this season and it dominated in the wins, beating Golden State (126-115) and Houston (137-118) by double digits. The Clips were installed as 7 ½-point favorites but the early action moved the line down to six. Clippers forward Matt Barnes (thigh) has missed the last four games and is ‘questionable’ for tonight.

Grizzlies at Pacers: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Memphis Grizzlies at Indiana Pacers (-6.5, 184.5)

The Indians Pacers look to extend the best start in franchise history Monday night when they put their unbeaten mark on the line at home against Memphis. The Pacers are 7-0 for the first time ever after a 96-91 win at Brooklyn on Saturday, maintaining their status as the lone unbeaten in the NBA. Although it is early, Indiana has already opened a four-game advantage on its Central Division opponents, each of whom have losing records.

Memphis finished a 2-1 homestand with a 108-90 win over Golden State on Saturday. It matched the Grizzlies' largest margin of victory since March 3 and pushed the club back to .500 for the third time as it exchanges losses and wins on the young season. Zach Randolph, who left the previous game early for the birth of his son, had 23 points and 11 rebounds.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, SportSouth (Memphis), FSN Midwest (Indiana)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (3-3): Point guard Mike Conley has been a big part of the Memphis scoring attack over the years - averaging double digits in each of the past five seasons - but he has elevated his game on that end of the floor this season. Conley poured in 20 points on a 9-of-11 effort from the floor in just 25 minutes against Golden State, and is averaging a team-high 20.2 points on 52.3 percent shooting. His performance has helped the Grizzlies shoot 47.4 percent as a team, the fourth-highest mark in the league entering Sunday's action.

ABOUT THE PACERS (7-0): Paul George scored 24 points and three others had at least 15 in Saturday's win at Brooklyn, which saw Indiana put forth another strong defensive effort. All seven of the Pacers' victims have been held to 91 points or fewer; Indiana allows the fewest points (85.3) in the NBA by a wide margin. In 2012-13, the Pacers ranked second in that category to the Grizzlies.

              TRENDS:

              * Grizzlies are 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
              * Over is 4-0 in Grizzlies last four road games.
              * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Indiana.
              * Pacers are 7-0 ATS in their last seven vs. NBA Southwest.

              BUZZER BEATERS:

              1. Pacers C Roy Hibbert is averaging 17.5 points and nine rebounds in his last two games, and entered Sunday ranked second in the league with 4.29 blocked shots per game.

              2. Memphis PG Jerryd Bayless (sprained knee) sat out Saturday's game and is considered day-to-day.

              3. Indiana has won 13 of 16 meetings at home.

                Monday, November 11

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bank shots: NBA's weekly betting news and notes
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each week, we look aback on the NBA betting scene and give you the best - and worst - basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on
                with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Nov. 4 - 10

Hottest ATS - Boston Celtics (3-1 SU, 4-0 ATS)

The Celtics were supposed to be one of the teams in the "Riggin' for Wiggins" category, but apparently no one told rookie head coach Brad Stevens. The Celtics are on a three-game winning streak, which included upsetting the up-and-down Miami Heat on a buzzer beater 3-pointer by Jeff Green. This week the Celtics start a three game home stand where they take on the Magic for the second time in three games, the Charlotte Bobcats, and the Portland Trailblazers, before heading on the road to face the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday. Rajon Rondo still isn't due back from his knee injury until December.

Coldest ATS - Utah Jazz (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS)

The winless Jazz are coming off a brutal east cost road trip where they played four games in five days and with their 0-7 start to the season are the early leaders in the race for Andrew Wiggins. Scoring has been the biggest issue for the Jazz so far this season as they rank dead last in points per game, field goal percentage, and 3-point percentage. Saturday night in Toronto the Raptors held them to 16.7 percent from behind the arc. The Jazz hope some home cooking will change their fortunes when the Denver Nuggets, New Orleans Hornets and San Antonio Spurs come to town before traveling to Golden State to take on the Warriors.

Best over play - New York Knicks (1-2 SU, 3-0 O/U)

The Knicks defense continues to struggle in the absence of Tyson Chandler. Since fracturing his right leg three games ago, the Knicks have given up 101 points per game, including 120 to the San Antonio Spurs Sunday. In the Knicks first three games with Chandler in the lineup, they had only given up 91.3 points per game. This week the Knicks take on the Atlanta Hawks twice, who are scoring at a clip of 105 points per game, and the Houston Rockets, who score 105.6 points per game.

Best under play - Orlando Magic (1-2 SU, 0-3 O/U)

The Magic have actually hit the under four games in a row dating back to last week. This is thanks in large part to the Magic's hard work at the defensive end of the court. The Magic hold opponents to the second lowest field goal percentage and the third lowest 3-point percentage so far this season. They are allowing 96.9 points per game which ranks them twelfth. The Magic travel to Boston Monday to face the Celtics before heading home to take on the Milwaukee Bucks and Dallas Mavericks this week.

                Surveying the schedule:

Before the season tipped-off he Brooklyn Nets were considered a team that could challenge the Miami Heat for the Eastern Conference title. So far that has not been the case. The Nets are 2-4 SU and ATS to start the season, which includes losses to Washington, Orlando and Cleveland. If the Nets hope to improve their record this season they will have to do it on a west coast road trip this week. They take on the Sacramento Kings, the up-start Phoenix Suns and the LA Clippers.

                        NBA

                        Tuesday, November 12

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NBA betting: Three ATS slam dunks for bettors
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the NBA season now two weeks old, it has been an interesting start as we have seen some good teams play poorly and some bad teams play very well. But as the league moves into its third week let's take a look at who some of the best teams have been when it comes to covering the spread.

                        Phoenix Suns (6-0-1 ATS)

No one in the NBA has had a hotter start to the season than the Phoenix Suns. The Suns lead the Pacific Division with a 5-2 SU record and are the only team in the NBA without a loss ATS. The Suns have been successful this season by being stingy on defense and efficient on offense. At the defensive end of the court the Suns are ranked in the top 10 in ppg, field goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage. On offense the Suns are scoring 100.3 ppg which puts them 13th in the league and are shooting at a clip of 46.5 percent from the floor, which ranks ninth. The Suns next four opponents have a combined record of 10-14 ATS.

                        Indiana Pacers (5-2 ATS)

If not for a meaningless last second dunk by the Raptors Terrance Ross when the Pacers beat the Toronto 91-84 last Saturday, the Pacers would have covered and be 6-1 ATS to start the season. Indy is off to its hottest start in franchise history by going 7-0 SU and are the NBA's only remaining undefeated team. The Pacers are led by Paul George, who does everything. He is scoring 25.1 points per game, shooting almost 47 percent from the field to go along with 7.9 rebounds, 4 assists and 1.7 steals per game. But the Pacers do most of their damage at the defensive end of the court, where they rank first in points allowed per game, first in field goal percentage, sixth in rebounds and ninth in 3-point percentage. The Pacers next four opponents have a combined 7-15 record ATS.

                        Minnesota Timberwolves (5-2)

The Timberwolves have had a strong start to the season going 5-2 straight up and have covered the spread in five of their last six games. The Wolves have been able to do this because of their work on the offensive glass. They are currently seventh in the league in offensive rebounding and that is creating a lot of second chance opportunities for the Wolves who are averaging a league high 88.4 field goal attempts per game. Kevin Love seems to have regained his old form after an injury riddled 2012-13 campaign. Love is second in the league in ppg with 26.9 and leads the league in rpg with 14.4. The Wolves next four opponents have a combined 12-14 record ATS.

                              Wednesday Tips

                              November 13, 2013

                              Rockets at 76ers - 7:05 PM EST

                              Houston: 5-3 SU, 3-4-1 ATS
                              Philadelphia: 4-4 SU, 5-3 ATS

The Rockets have stumbled since a 3-0 start, as Houston has won just twice in its last five trips to the court. Houston held off Toronto in double overtime on Monday, 110-104, but failed to cover as seven-point home favorites. Kevin McHale's club hasn't registered an ATS win in the last three games, but has covered in the lone opportunity as a road favorite at Utah on November 2.

The Sixers also began the season at 3-0, even though that was significantly more shocking than Houston's unbeaten start. Philadelphia has returned to Earth by losing four of its last five games, while losing three times at home by double-digits to Washington, Golden State, and San Antonio. The Sixers' defense is amongst the worst in the league, as Philadelphia has given up at least 100 points in seven of eight games this season.

Knicks at Hawks - 8:05 PM EST

New York: 2-4 SU, 2-4 ATS
                              Atlanta: 4-3 SU, 5-2 ATS

The Knicks blew a 25-point lead in the season opener to the Bucks, but held off Milwaukee to start the season at 1-0. New York has won just once since that night, posting a 1-4 mark with the lone victory coming at Charlotte. Mike Woodson's team was run out early in Sunday's home blowout loss to the Spurs, 120-89 as three-point underdogs. The Knicks did own the Hawks last season by sweeping all three games, including a 13-point triumph at Philips Arena.

Atlanta returns home for a pair of games after rallying past Charlotte on Monday, 103-94. The Hawks have quietly covered four straight contests, although all four of their straight-up victories are against teams currently sitting below the .500 mark. All of the sudden, the Hawks have transformed into an uptempo team by eclipsing the 'over' in six of seven games, while breaking the 100-point mark in all seven trips to the court.

Suns at Blazers - 10:05 PM EST

                              Phoenix: 5-2 SU, 6-0-1 ATS
                              Portland: 5-2 SU, 5-2 ATS

Two of the most surprising teams through the first two weeks meet for the second time after the Suns whipped the Blazers on opening night, 104-91 as five-point home underdogs. The venue shifts to the Moda Center in Oregon, as the Blazers have won and covered three consecutive games. Portland swept a home-and-home set from Sacramento, followed by a home triumph over Detroit. Since being limited to 91 points in the opener, the Blazers have tallied at least 100 points in five of the last six contests.

Phoenix has turned into the most profitable team in the league through seven games, covering six times and picking up a 'push' in a buzzer-beating win over Utah. The Suns have been impressive on the road by beating the Pelicans as a nine-point 'dog, while cashing as double-digit 'dogs at Oklahoma City and San Antonio. The home team has owned this series recently, winning seven of the last eight meetings, although the lone road victory came by Phoenix last season at Portland as six-point 'dogs.

Nets at Kings - 10:05 PM EST

                              Brooklyn: 2-4 SU, 2-4 ATS
                              Sacramento: 1-5 SU, 0-5-1 ATS

The Nets start a three-game West Coast swing tonight as Brooklyn tries to get on track following consecutive losses to Indiana and Washington. The road trip begins in Sacramento, as the Nets have failed to win in the three tries away from the Barclays Center, all in the road favorite role. To make matters worse, the three road defeats came to teams that are a combined 8-15 (Cleveland, Orlando, and Washington).

Another squad that falls in that category is the Kings, who have lost five straight games since edging the Nuggets in the season opener. Four of those five setbacks came by at least nine points, including the only loss in the home underdog role against the Clippers back on November 1. The Kings have lost five of the past six meetings with the Nets, as Brooklyn swept Sacramento last season.

Thunder at Clippers - 10:35 PM EST

Oklahoma City: 5-1 SU, 2-4 ATS
Los Angeles: 5-3 SU, 5-3 ATS

Since getting blown out at Minnesota, the Thunder has stormed back with four consecutive victories, while scoring at least 103 points in each win during this stretch. OKC heads to the West Coast to start a three-game road trip which takes them to Golden State tomorrow, but the Clippers stand in their way tonight. The Thunder swept the three-game season series last season, including a pair of triumphs at Staples Center.

The Clippers continue a four-game homestand after edging the Timberwolves, 109-107 on Monday, but failed to cash as 6 ½-point favorites. Los Angeles has cashed the 'over' in all three home games, including double-digit victories over Golden State and Houston. Seven of the last eight meetings between the Clippers and Thunder have finished 'over' the total, while OKC put up at least 108 points in all three wins last season.
