    Michigan State, Kentucky, Duke, Kansas

    Player of the Year Accolades
Gary Harris - Michigan State - Harris can be great. Anyone who knows the college game knows what a stabilizing presence and leader Draymond Green was. Harris is about to eclipse his impact, which speaks volumes.

    First Team VI All-Americans
    F- Andrew Wiggins, Kansas
    F- Doug McDermott, Creighton
    C- Mitch McGary, Michigan
    G- Marcus Smart, Oklahoma State
    G- Gary Harris, Michigan State

    Second Team VI All-Americans
    F- Aaron Gordon, Arizona
    F- Julius Randle, Kentucky
    C- Patric Young, Florida
    G- Andrew Harrison, Kentucky
    G/F- Jabari Parker, Duke

    Team to Watch (November)

Baylor - The Bears missed out on this Top 25 because of the likely regression Pierre Jackson's graduation will cause, since his leadership and floor skills leave a massive void. That said, Baylor has opportunities to make us look very foolish early, tangling with Syracuse and Gonzaga in Maui and hosting Kentucky on Dec. 6. You figure that bigs Cory Jefferson and Isaiah Austin will be game, but can they get the necessary point guard play to compete?

    Preseason College Basketball Rankings

    Current School Betting Notes

1 Michigan State: Adreian Payne nearly turned pro, but his return makes Sparty the team to beat entering the season. Sure, there are a couple of more skilled squads now that the talent pool has been replenished, but none will be as cohesive or experienced as the loaded group Tom Izzo returns. Guards Keith Appling and Gary Harris need to take the next step to realize their potential as the nation's top backcourt, while Branden Dawson and Denzel Valentine know their strengths and are growing as major assets. If the bench develops consistency, this will be the best team in both the Big Ten and the country.

2 Kentucky: The Fab Five may have to step aside as John Calipari has brought in Six Studs, a recruiting class hailed by some analysts as one of the best ever despite missing out on Andrew Wiggins. Julian Randle should be the best freshman post player in college basketball, Andrew Harrison could be the best point guard regardless of class, and twin brother Aaron, Dakari Johnson, James Young and Marcus Lee create an embarrassment of riches. The competition promised for holdovers Willie Cauley-Stein, Alex Poythress and Kyle Wiltjer has arrived.

3 Louisville: You can do a lot worse than Russ Smith and Luke Hancock as your senior captains, so even without Gorgui Dieng and Peyton Siva, the 'Ville is poised to be a force once again as the favorite in the American Athletic Conference. Chane Behanan and Montrezl Harrell are on the small side in the post but make up for it with their bulk and tenacity. 6-10 redshirt freshman Mangok Mathiang and 6-9 recruit Akoy Agau will need to supply the length necessary for the Cards to do what they like to defensively. Wayne Blackshear should be a major factor and breakout candidate.

4 Duke:Can Marshall Plumlee adequately replace the physical presence older brother Mason became as a senior? If so, the Blue Devils will be national championship-caliber, as star recruit Jabari Parker joins sophomores Rodney Hood, Amile Jefferson and Alex Murphy to form a superb frontcourt. Hood, a Mississippi State transfer, could join Parker in achieving household name status. Quinn Cook, Rasheed Sulaimon and Tyler Thornton return at guard, as does senior Andre Dawkins, who sat out last season and could be a massive x-factor as a kid everyone should be pulling for.

5 Florida: Patric Young will be one of the most imposing figures in the college game as a senior, anchoring a loaded frontcourt that will feature superb athlete Will Yeguete, 6-10 South Carolina transfer Damontre Harris, Casey Prather and freshman stud Chris Walker. That's a lot of length and strength. Virginia Tech transfer Dorian Finney-Smith and Rutgers defector Eli Carter will fortify the wing alongside superb shooter Michael Frazier. Top-10 point guard recruit Casey Hill will compete with Scottie Wilbekin for that starting spot. Billy Donovan's team won't be favored to win the SEC, but certainly could top the league again.

6 Oklahoma State: Marcus Smart would've undeniably been a Top-5 pick in June's NBA Draft, but surprisingly returned to Stillwater. As a result, the Cowboys should have their best Big 12 finish ever under Travis Ford. Le'Bryan Nash, Markel Brown, Michael Cobbins, Phil Forte and 7-footer Marek Soucek are also back, fortified by a solid recruiting class that should improve on last season's depth issues.

7 Kansas: Wiggins chose the Jayhawks. So did highly-coveted Memphis transfer Tarik Black, forming a ridiculous frontcourt recruiting class when you throw in freshman-to-be Joel Embiid. Tested talent returns in Perry Ellis, Jamari Traylor and Justin Wesley, so Bill Self is going to have plenty of options. The same can't be said at guard, where Naadir Tharpe and freshmen Wayne Selden, Connor Frankamp and Brannen Greene will have to replace major components Ben McLemore, Travis Releford and Elijah Johnson.

8 Michigan: Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway, Jr. left early for the NBA, so the Wolverines won't be as strong as they were in 2012. Still, Mitch McGary, Glenn Robinson III, Nik Stauskas, Caris Levert and Spike Albrecht will now be sophomores who have seen it all. Jordan Morgan and Jon Horford should be healthier, so the ceiling may depend on how large an impact highly touted McDonald's All-Americans Zak Irvin (G/F) and Derrick Walton (PG) have.

9 North Carolina: Roy Williams saw James Michael-McAdoo wisely return for his junior year and added terrific prospects Isaiah Hicks and Kennedy Meeks. With Joel James, Brice Johnson and small forward J.P. Tokoto now sophomores, the Tar Heels are loaded up front. Reggie Bullock's departure should lead to a breakout year for P.J. Hairston, but he'll need to toe the line to stay in the lineup. Marcus Paige showed enough as a freshman to trust he'll be a dependable floor general. If he takes another few steps forward, Duke will have company atop the ACC standings.

10 Arizona: Despite the loss of senior leaders Solomon Hill, Mark Lyons and Kevin Parrom, not to mention Grant Jerrett's unexpected leap to the NBA, Sean Miller has the West's top team. Forwards Aaron Gordon and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, elite recruits and likely future lottery picks, join sophomores Brandon Ashley and Kaleb Tarczewski up front. Duquesne transfer T.J. McConnell will help solidify the backcourt alongside returnees Nick Johnson, Jordin Mayes and Gabe York, while incoming freshman Elliott Pitts could be an x-factor.

11 Ohio State: If the Buckeyes figure out how to score consistently by the time March rolls around, they'll be a factor in the national title chase. Losing Deshaun Thomas early stung, but every other key piece outside of Evan Ravenel returns. Few, if any, will be able to pressure the ball defensively like this core should manage to.

12 UConn: After overachieving in a season where they were banned from postseason competition, the Huskies should be back among the nation's elite as they transition to the American. Kevin Ollie has terrific guards Shabazz Napier, Ryan Boatright and Omar Calhoun back in addition to improving forward DeAndre Daniels and center Tyler Olander. GW transfer Lasan Kromah will be elgiible immediately, 7-footer Enoch Wolf could return after having his suspension lifted and a class led by forward Kentan Facey should contribute.

13 Virginia: Jontel Evans's defensive tenacity will be missed, but he's the only missing piece from a team clearly emerging as an ACC power. Joe Harris and Akil Mitchell are back as senior anchors, while talented young cogs like wing Justin Anderson, forward Evan Nolte, center Mike Tobey and guards Teven Jones and Taylor Barnette are back as sophomores. Physical juniors Darion Atkins and Anthony Gill will hopefully be much healthier, leaving depth at the point as the lone question mark. Top recruits London Perrantes and Devon Hall will need to produce immediately to ease concerns. Consider his emergence a huge bonus.

14 Marquette: The Big East's beast resides in Milwaukee, which tells you all you need to know about how different the 10-team league will be. Jamil Wilson is poised for a breakout year, Davante Gardner is a problem in the post and Buzz Williams can be counted on to get his team to play harder than you. He can recruit a little bit, too, adding a class featuring guards JaJuan Johnson and Duane Wilson, as well as potentially special small forward Deonte Burton. Todd Mayo will be an x-factor as the team's most experienced guard. If he improves his shot selection, the sky is the limit.

15 VCU: Getting routed by Michigan in the Round of 32 was a tough ending for an accomplished group, but the Rams will again be in the spotlight this March. Defensive stud Briante Weber will replace Darius Theus full-time, while there are plenty of shooters returning to fill the void Troy Daniels leaves. All-Atlantic 10 candidates Juvonte Reddic and Melvin Johnson should get significant help from FSU transfer Terrance Shannon, who arrives to play enforcer.

16 Memphis: The Tigers won't be going undefeated in the AAC like they managed to in C-USA last season, but will have more opportunities for high-profile wins. Joe Jackson is back to run the show alongside Chris Crawford one of the country's top 3-point shooters. Last season's top recruits, Shaq Goodwin and Geron Johnson, should team with this year's elite class to offset major losses and keep Memphis basketball formidable.

17 Notre Dame: Rising seniors Eric Atkins and Jerian Grant will form one of the country's top backcourts and should be able to dominate games with their savvy while mentoring top recruit Demetrius Jackson. In year one as an ACC member, Mike Brey will worry about his frontcourt, which must make up for the loss of terrific rebounder Jack Cooley. Sophomore Zach Auguste steps in, flanked by shooters Pat Connaughton and Cameron Biedscheid among others.

18 Wichita State: The Shockers won't be sneaking up on anyone coming off a Final Four appearance, but they'll be good enough that it shouldn't matter. Departing bruiser Carl Hall and point guard Malcolm Armstead give way to UL-Lafayette transfer Kadeem Coleby and former star recruit Fred VanVleet, who didn't disappoint as a freshman. Cleanthony Early put himself on the NBA radar and shooter Ron Baker is poised for a breakout sophomore season after playing x-factor in the NCAAs.

19 New Mexico: Point guard Kendall Williams and center Alex Kirk will be trying out for the U.S. World University Games team, while Australian Cameron Bairstow will be in the mix for his country. Though losing Tony Snell to the draft early hurt, the continuity ensured by keeping Craig Neal on to replace Steve Alford should keep the Lobos atop the Mountain West.

20 St. Louis: The 2012-13 A-10 champs won't be as deep, but they'll still out-work teams and defend like it's going out of style. Dwayne Evans, Rob Loe, Mike McCall and Jordair Jett are standouts who should make Jim Crews' first full season as head coach minus the interim tag a successful one.

21 Iowa: The Hawkeyes hope their run to the NIT title game helps turn the corner, because the bulk of the roster is expected to return. If Fran McCaffery and his terrific staff continue to coax progress from the likes of Roy Devyn Marble, Melsahn Basabe, Adam Woodbury, Aaron White and Zach McCabe, this team will be able to hang with anyone up front.

22 Syracuse: The Orange should be rounding into form by the time ACC play rolls around, but there could be bumps early due to a thin, inexperienced backcourt that will be a season-long concern.. Freshman James Ennis takes the keys from early draft entry Michael Carter-Williams and won't have the graduated Brandon Triche to lean on for support. C.J. Fair sticking around provides Jim Boeheim a huge boost, likely keeping Jerami Grant in a sixth man role he should flourish in. Improving bigs Rakeem Christmas, DaJuan Coleman and Baye Keita will make getting to the rim a tough proposition against Cuse.

23 Indiana: The cupboard is nowhere near as stocked, but there's a lot left. Will Sheehey and Yogi Ferrell must step up as leaders, while Colombian forward Hanner Perea-Mosquera has to make big strides in his sophomore season to help protect the paint. ASU transfer Evan Gordon should be a factor as another competent, veteran piece, adding a nice finishing touch to another terrific crop of recruits.

24 Oregon: The Ducks lost basically their entire frontcourt, from former transfers Arsalan Kazemi, Carlos Emory and Tony Woods to sniper E.J. Singler. Don't sleep, though. Mike Moser comes over from UNLV to help fill the void and could have a huge season if he's completely healthy again. 6-11 Waverly Austin should step up in the middle. Dominic Artis and Dameyane Dotson showed flashes of brilliance as freshmen, and head coach Dana Altman has another talented recruiting class coming on board.

25 Creighton: Doug McDermott is back to help his dad, Greg, deal with the transition to the Big East, making the Blue Jays a contender right away. They'll miss gritty Gregory Echenique and Grant Gibbs, but enough talent returns to ensure this won't be a one-man show. It should help that new conference mates will find the trip to Omaha to be one of the new-look league's toughest.

On the Radar: Gonzaga, St. John's, Butler, UCLA, Iowa State, Xavier, Villanova, San Diego State, Washington, Colorado, Missouri, Tennessee, Baylor, Alabama, Wisconsin, Boston College, Boise State, Georgetown, Miami (FL), Stanford, Ole Miss, Louisiana Tech, LSU, Arizona State, Oklahoma.

    Friday's Betting Notes

    November 7, 2013

    **Maryland vs. Connecticut**

-- These schools will collide at Barclays Center in Brooklyn for a 6:30 p.m. Eastern tip on ESPN2. As of early Thursday night, most betting shops had UConn favored by 5 ½ or six points.

-- Most preseason publications have Maryland predicted to finish sixth or seventh in the ACC. The Terrapins are seeking their first NCAA Tournament bid since Mark Turgeon took over for Gary Williams. Turgeon’s first season ended with 17 wins and last year the Terps won 25 before losing in the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden.

-- Maryland lost 7-1 center Alex Len to the NBA Draft following his sophomore campaign. Len averaged 11.9 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.1 blocked shots per game. The Terps also lost Pe’Shon Howard, who transferred to Southern Cal. Howard dished out a team-high 3.6 assists per game.

-- Turgeon’s troops will be led by Dez Wells, who scored a team-high 13.1 PPG after transferring to College Park from Xavier. Wells, who can play the 2 or the 3, averaged 4.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contests in 2012-2013. Junior guard Nick Faust is another wing player who averaged 9.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game as a sophomore. Seth Allen (7.8 PPG) was expected to be the starting point guard before suffering a fractured foot that’s going to keep him on the sidelines until January. Look for Wells to play a lot of PG in Allen’s absence.

-- Maryland has three key newcomers. Michigan transfer Evan Smotrycz sat out last year but is ready to contribute. The stretch-4 with range averaged 7.7 points and 4.9 boards a game for the Wolverines in 2011-2012. Penn St. transfer Jonathan Graham is still awaiting word from the NCAA on whether or not he can play this season. Graham averaged 3.9 points and 3.3 rebounds for the Nittany Lions last year. Roddy Peters, a local D.C. product, is a combo guard who was ranked No. 48 by Rivals.com in his 2013 recruiting class.

-- UConn enters its second season since Jim Calhoun’s retirement looking to get back to the postseason. The Huskies are in the newly-formed AAC after going 20-10 overall and 10-8 in its last season in the Big East. They weren’t allowed to play in the postseason due to a one-year ban from the NCAA for recruiting violations.

-- UConn has one of the country’s premier backcourts with senior Shabazz Napier and junior Ryan Boatright. Napier averaged 17.1 points, 4.6 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game last season, while Boatright averaged 15.4 points and 4.4 assists per contest.

-- Kevin Ollie’s squad has an excellent third wheel in DeAndre Daniels, who averaged 12.1 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Daniels also blocked a team-high 45 shots. He is looking to get help in the paint from incoming freshman Kentan Facey, who was New York state’s Gatorade Player of the Year.

-- UConn power forward Tyler Olander (4.3 PPG, 3.7 RPG) has been suspended indefinitely after being charged with DUI.

-- UConn will get backcourt depth from George Washington transfer Lasan Kromah, who averaged double figures in scoring in each of his three seasons with the Colonials. The Huskies have also added North Carolina St. transfer Rodney Purvis, but he must sit out the season and will only be able to contribute in practice.

    **St. John’s vs. Wisconsin**

-- This Big East-Big Ten showdown will take place at the Sanford Sports Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on the Big Ten Network.

-- As of early Thursday night, most betting shops had Wisconsin favored by 4 ½-points

-- Wisconsin is ranked No. 20 in The AP Top 25 peseason poll. The Badgers were bounced from last season’s NCAA Tournament in their opener against Ole Miss.

-- Bo Ryan has led Wisconsin to the Big Dance in each of his 12 seasons as head coach. The Badgers, who have never finished worse than fourth in the Big Ten under Ryan, are a solid bet to be back in the NCAAs again this year thanks to the return of Traevon Jackson, Josh Gasser, Sam Dekker and Ben Brust. Gasser is returning from a torn ACL that caused him to miss the 2012-2013 campaign.

-- Brust is the team’s leading returning scorer (11.1 PPG) and rebounder (5.1 RPG) despite standing just 6-1. He does all the little things and is a vintage player in Ryan’s program, one that takes charges, devours loose balls and is always in the right place. Jackson and Gasser can both play PG and create for others. Dekker is a 6-7 forward that can step out and stroke it from 3-point range.

-- St. John’s is expected to finish in the middle of the pack in the new Big East that has 10 teams, including newcomers like Xavier, Butler and Creighton. The Red Storm was decimated by injuries and a key suspension in 2012-2013 when they won only 17 games. Steve Lavin’s squad was in the bubble conversation in early February before losing seven of its last eight games. D’Angelo Harrison (17.8 PPG) was suspended for the last six games but was reinstated over the summer.

-- The Red Storm returns most of its key pieces like sophomore JaKarr Sampson, who averaged 14.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game last year. Sir’Dominic Pointer is back after leading the Johnnies in assists, steals and field-goal percentage.

-- St. John’s went to its first NCAA Tournament since 2002 in Lavin’s first season, losing in the first round to Gonzaga. But Lavin missed most of his second year as he battled prostate cancer and the Red Storm limped to a 13-19 record. Coming off a 17-win season, Lavin is determined to get St. John’s back in the NCAAs in his fourth year at the helm.

    **Oregon vs. Georgetown**

-- This game will be played at Camp Humphreys in Seoul, South Korea, in front of United States troops. Both schools will wear camo-style uniforms in the second edition of the Armed Forces Classic. ESPN will have the telecast at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

-- As of early Thursday night, most spots had Georgetown as a four-point ‘chalk.’

-- Oregon advanced to the Sweet 16 last season before falling to eventual national champ Louisville. The Ducks finished the year with 28 wins and won the Pac-12 Tournament with a win over UCLA in the finals.

-- Oregon will be without starting guard Dominic Artis and reserve forward Ben Carter. Both sophomores have been suspended indefinitely for selling team gear (shoes in this case). Artis averaged 8.5 points, 3.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game as a freshman. When he missed nine games with a foot injury, the Ducks weren’t the same team.

-- Dana Altman’s team will have its second leading scorer from last year in sophomore Damyean Dotson, who averaged 11.4 points and 3.5 assists per game as a freshman. The Ducks lost a pair of solid post players in E.J. Singler and Tony Woods, but they add UNLV transfer Mike Moser after he struggled with injuries for the Rebels last season.

-- Speaking of transfers, Georgetown could be in business if former UCLA center Josh Smith can keep his weight down. Smith has outstanding post moves and reminds me a lot of Dametri Hill, who led the Florida Gators to their first Final Four appearance in 1994.

-- Georgetown will be without Greg Whittington (12.1 PPG) for the time being due to a torn ACL suffered in the spring. The Hoyas will also be trying to replace the void caused by the loss of Otto Porter, who was the No. 3 pick in the NBA Draft.

-- Senior guard Markel Starks was the Hoyas second-leading scorer last season when he averaged 12.8 points and 3.0 assists per game.

-- Georgetown was the first victim of Florida Gulf Coast in last year’s NCAA Tournament, losing 78-68 as a 14-point favorite and a No. 3 seed.

Baylor among teams in opening tripleheader

      November 8, 2013

DALLAS (AP) - Baylor finished last season celebrating the NIT championship.

The 25th-ranked Bears start this season close to where they would like to end it - in North Texas, where the NCAA Final Four will be played five months from now.

Baylor takes on former Big 12 rival Colorado on Friday night in the nightcap of a season-opening tripleheader at the Dallas Mavericks' home arena in downtown Dallas. That is about 20 miles from the Dallas Cowboys' massive stadium that will host the Final Four in April.

''Everybody identifies, everybody realizes and knows the importance and significance of those two places, and wants to play in venues like that,'' Bears coach Scott Drew said. ''I know our players are really excited.''

Oklahoma plays Alabama in the opener, with Dallas-Fort Worth teams SMU and TCU meeting in the middle game.

SMU returns all five starters, and each played more than 32 minutes a game in Larry Brown's first season. But the Mustangs have added so much depth that they aren't settled yet on a starting five for this season. Three talented transfers are available, along with a highly touted group of freshmen.

''That's going to be our biggest challenge, is to find out what guys play well together,'' Brown said. ''Right now, we have 12 kids, I think all can play a little bit. We've got to find which guys make each other better, and which five guys will defend and rebound and share the ball the best.''

TCU goes into coach Trent Johnson's second season without injured big men Devonta Abron and Aaron Durley, both out for the year. The Horned Frogs did add a quartet of freshmen, led by 6-foot-10 center Karviar Shepherd.

Johnson said those freshmen ''are going to have to play a lot of minutes for us to be successful, and play well.'' That quartet combined for 41 of the Frogs' 81 points and nearly 60 percent of the rebounds in their only exhibition game.

Alabama made it to the NIT quarterfinals last season and has averaged 23 wins the last three years. Coach Anthony Grant said the Crimson Tide, playing Oklahoma for the first time since New Year's Day 2007, have a good nucleus of eight or nine players.

Sooners coach Lon Kruger last year became the first coach to lead five different teams to the NCAA tournament. Oklahoma has only six returning players, including two seniors.

''Coming out of Friday, we'll have a much better idea of where we stand, and what we need to work on,'' Kruger said. ''We've got a young group that's excited to play.''

This will be Colorado's third Pac-12 season, and the Buffaloes are playing the Bears for the third consecutive season in that span. All of those games have been on a neutral court.

The Buffs won the Pac-12 conference tournament in 2012 and their first game in the NCAA tournament before losing 80-63 to Baylor. Colorado didn't have to wait long for another shot, and upset then-No. 16 Baylor 60-58 in the semifinal round of the Charleston Classic last November.

The Bears will have a new point guard after Pierre Jackson led the Big 12 in scoring and assists as a senior last season. The likely starter will be Kenny Chery. Like Jackson, he's a standout junior college transfer.

Baylor also will get an up-close look at the Final Four venue, when the Bears play top-ranked Kentucky there on Dec. 6.

        New-look Missouri opens without Haith

        November 8, 2013

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Coach Frank Haith won't be there when Missouri opens its season at home against Southeastern Louisiana on Friday night.

The opener marks the start of a five-game suspension Haith received from the NCAA last month for failing to promote an atmosphere of compliance while coaching at Miami.

''It's going to be pretty hard,'' he said. ''You can imagine. It's something I've never experienced.''

Haith won't be allowed to communicate with his team until after its Nov. 25 game against IUPUI. He'll also miss matchups with Southern Illinois, Hawaii and Gardner-Webb. Tim Fuller will take over as interim head coach.

''The most important thing is those 16 heartbeats in the locker room,'' said Fuller, who is getting his first head coaching experience. He arrived with Haith in 2011 and played at Wake Forest when Haith was an assistant with the Demon Deacons.

Missouri returns just one starter, Jabari Brown, for the second consecutive year, and less than 40 percent of its scoring, rebounding, assists and steals from a 23-11 campaign last season. Brown, a junior, averaged 13.7 points in 2012-13 while senior Earnest Ross added 10.3 off the bench.

The Tigers struggled in their second exhibition game Nov. 1 against Central Missouri, trailing 45-43 at halftime before recovering for a 92-79 win. Against Southeastern Louisiana, the team will be without senior forward Tony Criswell, who is suspended for violating team rules.

Haith and Fuller hope their reassembled team can find an identity Friday against the Lions, who were picked to finish sixth out of 12 teams in the Southland Conference preseason coaches' poll.

Senior guards Dre Evans (9.3 points per game) and Jeffery Ricard (9.0) are the only returning starters for coach Jim Yarbrough's team, which finished 13-18 overall last season but 10-8 in conference.

''You'd like to play great right out of the gate,'' Yarbrough said, ''but I think all of us are looking for a level of consistency, and it will be a great environment to see if we can get a little bit of that.''

Here are five things to know about the first meeting between the schools:

CHEMISTRY: The Tigers said they struggled to communicate with one another against Central Missouri, and more growing pains are likely without Phil Pressey, who skipped his senior season in favor of the NBA draft. Keep an eye on sophomore Stefan Jankovic, whom Haith described as potentially one of the best shooters in the country. Jankovic only averaged 7.9 minutes per game last year and never seemed to establish a role for himself, but he will see more playing time this season after the loss of Keion Bell to graduation.

NEW POINT MAN: Missouri junior Jordan Clarkson sat out the 2012-13 season after transferring from Tulsa, where he averaged 14.2 points and 2.3 assists per game over two years. An all-Conference USA selection in 2011-12, Clarkson will run the point for the Tigers along with freshman Wes Clark. How well the Tigers adjust to his style and how well he distributes the ball will determine the team's success this season.

EVANS' POISE: Yarbrough said point guard Evans is poised to have a good year as he's set to play consecutive seasons at the same school for the first time in college. He transferred to Southeastern Louisiana from Blinn College, and played at Providence his freshman year. He averaged 9.3 points and 2.4 assists per game for the Lions in 2012-13, but got ''too excited at times,'' Yarbrough said.

HOME-MADE: Missouri owns an 18-game winning streak at home, going 17-0 at Mizzou Arena in its first season in the Southeastern Conference. The Tigers are 33-1 overall at home in the last two years and haven't dropped a nonconference game on their own floor since November 2005.

KEEPING UP: Central Missouri took the lead at the break in the Tigers' last game, so don't be surprised if Southeastern Louisiana hangs around. Friday will be the first day Fuller assumes head coaching responsibilities for Missouri, and his team must adjust to his in-game management. ''It's kind of like when your parents go away for a little while,'' Clarkson said. ''What are you going to do? Throw a party or something? Nah, we're going to make sure we hold it down and do what we've got to do.''

UNC: Hairston, McDonald to miss opener

          November 7, 2013

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina won't have leading scorer P.J. Hairston and senior Leslie McDonald for the No. 12 Tar Heels' opener against Oakland on Friday due to NCAA eligibility concerns.

''It's an ongoing issue, a compliance issue with the university and the NCAA,'' team spokesman Steve Kirschner said Thursday. ''We're working together on that, but they're not playing. Really that's all we can get into at this point.''

Authorities twice cited Hairston during the offseason while driving a rental vehicle linked to a felon, raising the possibility of an improper benefits violation.

The school hasn't specified McDonald's issue, though UNC had to send a letter this summer ordering a company that makes designer mouth guards to stop using McDonald on a website promoting its brand.

McDonald had made at least one social media post last year about wearing one of the company's mouth guards. NCAA rules generally prohibit athletes from endorsing or promoting a company or product.

Kirschner announced both players' statuses shortly before coach Roy Williams' already scheduled news conference in advance of the first game.

Williams said both players have been practicing well, though neither had been on the first team in drills for the past week or so.

''Well, you know, it is frustrating, but it's also a long process,'' Williams said. ''We're trying to do what we can do. The NCAA is trying to do what they can do. But it's what it is. I'm sure they - they meaning the NCAA - would like to settle all their cases in five minutes, too. We've just got to try to continue working with them and working with our student-athletes and do the best job we can do and see what happens.''

Syracuse ready to roll against Cornell

            November 7, 2013

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Jim Boeheim is more than ready to start his 38th season at Syracuse. So are his No. 8 Orange.

Four exhibition games in August and two more in early November at the end of an extended preseason camp has everybody chomping at the bit in anticipation of Friday night's season opener in the Carrier Dome against Cornell.

''I think everybody is anxious to play and start the season,'' Boeheim said. ''We've had pretty good preparation up until this point. I think we'll be ready to go Friday night.''

With four freshmen and a new backcourt, the Orange have a lot to learn despite the extra practice time, which included a four-game trip to Canada in August. It showed in Tuesday night's 81-46 exhibition win over Ryerson.

''I think some of the younger players have not adjusted to coming off the bench and being ready to go,'' said Boeheim, second all-time in Division I with 920 victories. ''We had a couple of freshmen in there. They both went to the same side on defense twice and gave up two wide-open 3s. I think some of those things are things that we need to think about.''

Freshman Tyler Ennis takes over at point guard in place of Michael Carter-Williams, who left in the spring after his sophomore year and has made an immediate impact in the NBA with three superlative games to start his pro career. Trevor Cooney will slide into the other guard slot in place of four-year starter Brandon Triche, who graduated.

Ennis had seven points, five assists and four steals against Ryerson. His value is immeasurable.

''He's important for our team,'' Boeheim said. ''I told him at halftime he has to be a little more aggressive offensively. When I tell him something, he does it. That's a good trait to have. He's a key guy. He's a mature freshman. He's still a freshman. He's going to make mistakes. He understands the position as well as any other freshman.''

Syracuse leads the all-time series against Cornell 87-31 and carries a 33-game win streak against the Big Red into the contest. Cornell's last victory in the longtime series was a 94-82 triumph on Dec. 4, 1968 at Barton Hall in Ithaca.

''Cornell is a disciplined team, but during the season opener we should be coming out hard and playing well.'' Ennis said. ''Coach wants me to be a vocal leader. I know I am a young guy, but the position calls for me to be a leader on the court.''

It's safe to say Ennis will be under a microscope from the opening tip. He doesn't seem the least bit fazed.

''I see a lot of confidence in his play,'' said 6-foot-8 senior forward C.J. Fair, the Orange's leading scorer and rebounder last season. ''He is a smart player and rarely makes the wrong decision. I'm having fun playing with him, and I'm eager to see how he grows as a point guard.''

In their first year in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Orange return three starters from last year's 30-10 team that made it to the Final Four: Fair, voted preseason ACC Player of the Year; 6-9 junior forward Rakeem Christmas; and 6-9 sophomore center Dajuan Coleman. Add 6-10 senior Baye Moussa Keita, and Syracuse has a nice core of big bodies and long arms to guard the paint in Boeheim's 2-3 zone defense.

Cornell is coming off a 13-18 season (5-9 Ivy League), and fourth-year head coach Bill Courtney has had to replace four starters to open the season. Returning first-team All-Ivy forward Shonn Miller continues to recover from an injury that sidelined him in the preseason.

Robinson looking to play larger role for Pitt

              November 7, 2013

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon says he's ready for sophomore point guard James Robinson to take the next step.

Robinson started 32 of 33 games last season, a rarity for a freshman with the Panthers. While Robinson did an excellent job running the offense, Dixon says he would like to see Robinson look to score more this winter.

Robinson averaged 6.1 points a year ago and shot just 38 percent from the field. He spent most of the offseason working on his jumper in hopes of becoming a bigger threat offensively.

Robinson and the Panthers open the season on Friday night against Savannah State.

Pittsburgh guard James Robinson spent most of his freshman season playing in the considerable shadow of 7-foot-1 classmate Steven Adams.

Adams was the rock star of the recruiting class, a ''one and done'' phenom already cashing checks in the NBA.

Meanwhile, Robinson has turned into the bedrock of a team coach Jamie Dixon believes can compete with the elite in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Robinson started all but one game last season, calmly and quietly helping guide the Panthers to a 24-9 mark and another NCAA tournament bid. Heading into his sophomore year, which starts tonight when Pitt hosts Savannah State, Robinson already has his coach drawing comparisons to former playmakers Brandin Knight, Carl Krauser and Levance Fields.

''He brings confidence to the other guys,'' Dixon said. ''His unselfishness, those are all traits you have to have as a good leader and he has those.''

Oh, and did Dixon mention Robinson's defense? Robinson's tenaciousness on the perimeter is one of the main reasons why Dixon thrust Robinson into the starting lineup immediately last fall. Even as his status rose from newcomer to pivotal piece, his discipline never wavered.

''I think we have a good-sized point guard with good athleticism and good know-how,'' Dixon said. ''He takes great pride in his defense. To me, though he's only a sophomore, it's something that we can really build our defense around.''

Still, Dixon is asking for more out of Robinson this season, particularly on offense as Pitt looks to replace nearly half of its scoring output from last year.

Guard Tray Woodall graduated and took with him his team-high 11.5 points and 5.1 assists per game. He left behind, however, more than a dash of knowledge.

''I got lucky last year having Tray in the backcourt with me, and he taught me just everything,'' Robinson said. ''All the nuances of the college game.''

Now it's Robinson's time to start commanding more attention from defenses, which often left him when he didn't have the ball because he didn't exactly pose much of a threat.

Robinson averaged 6.1 points per game on 36.8 percent shooting last year, including just 31.3 percent from 3-point range. His highest scoring games were 14-point efforts against Oakland and Villanova.

Though the number isn't exactly eye-popping, Robinson is quick to point out the Panthers won both games, the only real statistic that matters.

Still, for Pitt to be competitive, Robinson needs to become more than a ballhandler. He spent much of the offseason - which included helping Team USA win gold in the FIBA Under-19 tournament over the summer - working to smooth out a jump shot that abandoned him at times.

He believes he's a better shooter now, even if there's no magic elixir.

''Just work on it,'' Robinson said. ''Getting more consistent with my form, being able to shoot later in games, and having a more aggressive mentality.''

One of the keys for Robinson will be finding a way to balance that newfound aggressiveness with his responsibilities running the offense. Dixon doesn't see why Woodall can't do both well. Neither does his point guard.

McGary won't play in opener for Michigan

                November 7, 2013

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Michigan center Mitch McGary will miss Friday night's season opener against UMass-Lowell because of a lingering back problem.

Coach John Beilein didn't offer many details about McGary's condition or progress. The 6-foot-10 sophomore was named to the AP's preseason All-America team, but it's not clear when he'll be able to take the court this season. The seventh-ranked Wolverines will raise a banner Friday before the game to commemorate last season's run to the Final Four.

McGary averaged 7.5 points per game last season as a freshman, but in the NCAA tournament he averaged 14.3 points and 10.7 rebounds, helping the Wolverines reach the national championship game, which they lost to Louisville.

                  Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

KenPom.com's six best college basketball conferences.......

                  6) Big X—Oklahoma State/Kansas games will be fun; Smart vs Wiggins matchup two of nation’s best
                  players.

                  5) Pac-12—No teams in KenPom’s top 20, but five in second 20.

                  4) AAC—What you say? This is the old Big East; bottom half drags it down a little. Top is very tough.

                  3) ACC—Having trouble getting used to Syracuse/Pitt not being in the Big East. Southern teams are going to love winter nights in Syracuse.

                  2) Big East—Creighton/Georgetown only two teams in top 20. When is DePaul going to come to life?

                  1) Big Dozen—Seven teams in top 30; KenPom’s ratings usually favor stodgier teams that protect ball well.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend

                  13) College basketball tips off tonight, the best time of the year. There are rules changes this season designed to make the game less physical; there were a lot of fouls called in some of the exhibition games. Hopefully players, coaches will adjust to the new rules fairly quickly, or we’re going to spend a lot of time watching guys take foul shots.

                  12) Aaron Rodgers’ injury makes Bears-Lions a bigger game in the NFC North race; winner Sunday takes over first place and if Detroit wins, it basically gives them a 1.5-game lead over the Bears, since they would’ve swept the season series.

                  11) Two of the three best college football games this weekend were last night, which is unusual; Oregon's loss was good news for Florida State. Last night was first time Baylor was favored over Oklahoma since 1998.

                  10) Broncos play first game without John Fox in San Diego, ironically where Fox went to college. Peyton Manning won/covered his last seven post-bye games. How much will Fox's absence disrupt the Broncos' routine?

                  9) Kansas State-Texas Tech is pretty good game between teams you don’t think a lot about. Kliff Kingsbury has done a good job in Lubbock, in his first year as a head coach.

                  8) Saints’ DC Rob Ryan had the same job in Dallas LY; he has to have some kind of an advantage going against Cowboys Sunday night, especially since the Saints’ offense plays a lot better at home.

                  7) Central Florida-Houston game pits two of the three best teams in the new AAC; this should be a good game.

Still think Notre Dame messed up when they canned George O’Leary for “enhancing” his resume when he was a young coach.

                  6) Houston Texans play in Arizona without Gary Kubiak, which is more of a problem than Denver has, since Kubiak calls the plays for rookie QB Keenum. Its harder to replace a coordinator than a head coach and Kubiak is in reality also Denver’s OC. Good news is they think Kubiak will be back on the sidelines for the Texans next week.

                  5) Loser of the Nebraska-Michigan is going to be even more depressed than they are now, considering both are having down years. Cornhuskers got lucky on a Hail Mary play to beat Northwestern last week. Check out YouTube if you haven’t seen the play. Michigan QB Gardner should go back to his old number; he’s not playing very well.

                  4) Chiefs have a bye this week, but the way Andy Reid’s year is going, he should buy a Powerball ticket; chances are, he would win the jackpot.

                  3) Arkansas is a 17-point underdog at Ole Miss. Bret Bielema is the 3rd-highest-paid college football coach in America, but his Razorbacks haven’t won a game since baseball season ended. Think he regrets leaving Wisconsin?

                  2) Carolina-San Francisco is the best NFL game this week; who thought that would be the case, when the schedule came out last spring?

                  1) LSU-Alabama is almost always good theater; do you think any LSU alums are fanning the flames of the Saban-to-Texas rumors? Would they do something like that?

                        Armadillo's Write-Up

                        Friday, November 8

Games start tonight; my thing has always been to study teams for 7-10 days before making any selections, since there are usually suspensions to sort out and now with these rule changes, want to see how it makes the games different. I'll be posting info on top games every day......

Oklahoma lost three starters from a 20-12 team that lost its last three games LY, getting upset by TCU in regular season finale, then getting beat in both Big X tourney and first NCAA game. Alabama has three starters back from 23-13 team that went 1-5 during a December non-conference skid that cost them at tournament time.

SMU beat TCU 64-61 LY in local rivalry, when Frog subs missed 8 of 9 free throws; TCU shot 55% for game inside arc, but Mustangs hit 18-27 foul shots. SMU has all five starters back from 15-17 team, but this is second year in Coach Brown's system. TCU lost four starters from LY's 11-21 team, but they're bringing in good young players to rebuild.

Baylor is 5-3 in its last eight games with Colorado, but they lost 60-58 to Buffs LY despite Colorado bricking 14 of 18 foul shots. Year before, Bears hammered Colorado by 17 in NCAAs. Buffs have quality PG in Dinwiddie, one of four starters back from 20-12 team. Baylor has three starters back from 23-12 team that won the NIT championship.

Boston College won four of last five games with Providence, its former rival in Big East; they lost 64-57 in last visit here two years ago. Friars suspended two freshman this week, one of whom (Austin) is supposed to be bigtime talent. BC is expected to finish in top half of ACC, even with Syracuse/Pitt/ND joining league- they have all five starters back from LY's and have seven juniors who have played a lot.

Maryland PG Allen (foot) is out for few weeks, so freshman will have to do most of ball handling until he gets back; Terps were 25-13 LY, but only 10-11 in league play. UConn is off probation, has all five starters back from LY and has very good guards- they went 20-10 playing under cloud of no postseason play LY.

Oregon suspended G Artis for selling his sneakers; they stumbled LY when he out injured. Ducks lost three other starters from LY's 28-9 club that went 12-6 in Pac-12, but they've added couple of excellent transfers. Georgetown lost two best players from their 25-7 team that went 14-4 in Big East. This game is on an Army base in South Korea.

Wisconsin gets PG Gasser back from ACL injury, but not sure if he is 100% yet; Badgers has two starters back from 23-12 team that lost to Ole Miss in first round of NCAAs. St John's has its five top scorers back from LY, including 6-4 G Harrison, who was suspended for last six games. Ryan-Lavin is immense coaching mismatch in Badgers' favor.

Enfield makes USC coaching debut at Utah State, where Aggies seldom lose; State has four starters back from 21-10 team as it moves up from WAC to Mountain West. Trojans have three starters back from 13-18 team that had its coach fired during season- they're going to play faster now, but may not have all the players yet to make it translate to wins.

Cal-Irvine won 58-51 at Fresno State LY, outscoring Bulldogs 23-13 in final 10:00 of game; Anteaters lost three starters from 21-16 team, are expected to be a contender in Big West. Fresno also lost three starters but one of them was 7-0 Upshaw in offseason, which hurt; Bulldogs had trouble scoring LY, ranking 342nd out of 347 teams in 2-point FG%.

Louisiana Tech lost four of last five games LY after a 26-3 start, missed out on NCAAs, but shared regular season WAC title; they've moved to C-USA, are expected to contend with four starters back and Memphis off to AAC. St Mary's is always good but they lost Dellavedova, their PG for last three years. Gaels have three starters back from 28-7 team.

Duke beat Davidson by 17-13 points the last two years; word is that Duke is more athletic than usual, less experienced, but they're going to run more and attack on defense more. Davidson is really well-coached but they lost four seniors off LY's 26-8 team- they were 29-all at half vs Duke LY, but got outscored 19-5 in first 10:00 of 2nd half, lost by 17.

BYU beat Weber State the last ten years; Wildcats lost last five visits to Provo, all by 15+ points. Weber is picked to win Big Sky this year with three starters back from 30-7 team that #2 in nation in 3-point shooting- they lost by 10 at home to BYU, witrh Cougars shooting 61% inside arc. Difference in class: WCC is #10 league in country, Big Sky is #27.

Alford makes coaching debut at UCLA vs Drexel squad that returns four starters from 13-18 team that went 9-9 in CAA but had ton of injuries and didn't defend as well as they usually do. Bruins have three starters back from Pac-12 regular season champs that went 10-7 in last 17 games and then lost by 20 to Minnesota in first round of NCAAs. Alford has a tough job; his predecessor made three Final Fours and still got fired.

Maryland Terrapins vs. Connecticut Huskies (-7, 144)
                            Site: Brooklyn, New York

The Terrapins are predicted to challenge for that middle tier in the ACC, though another year of maturity from swingman Dez Wells could get them closer to the top. Wells is expected to take on more ball-handling duties and averaged 13.1 points on 52.6 percent shooting as a sophomore last season, including a 30-point outburst in an ACC tournament win over Duke.

The Huskies managed 20 wins despite sitting out both the Big East and NCAA Tournaments last season and will run out a starting lineup with two seniors and two juniors to go along with sophomore Omar Calhoun. Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright combined to average 32.5 points and nine assists in one of the most productive backcourts in the country last season.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Under is 8-2 in Huskies last 10 vs. Atlantic Coast.
                            * Over is 6-2 in Terrapins last eight neutral site games.
                            * Terrapins are 5-1 ATS in their last six neutral site games.

Davidson Wildcats at Duke Blue Devils (-17, 152)

The Wildcats are coming off consecutive 25-win campaigns and lost on a last-second shot to third-seeded Marquette in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Davidson, which will move to the Atlantic 10 in 2014, begins its final season in the Southern Conference with the league’s preseason player of the year in De’Mon Brooks (13.7 points, 6.2 rebounds).

Despite the loss of its top three scorers from a season ago, the expectations remain high for No. 4 Duke. The Blue Devils lost Seth Curry, Mason Plumlee and Ryan Kelly to graduation – a trio that accounted for 54.8 percent of the team’s scoring – but highly-touted freshman Jabari Parker was the crown jewel of a recruiting class that is expected to help Duke win the ACC.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Under is 7-1 in the last eight meetings.
                            * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Duke.
                            * Wildcats are 5-2 ATS in their last seven vs. Atlantic Coast.

St. John's Red Storm vs. Wisconsin Badgers (-3.5, 132)
                            Site: Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Despite having five starters and 11 letterwinners returning, the fortunes of this year's St. John's squad could come down to a newcomer Rysheed Jordan. St. John's has a pair of solid scorers returning in D'Angelo Harrison (17.8) and JaKarr Sampson (14.9), as well as the nation's blocked shots leader in sophomore Chris Obekpa (4.03).

Wisconsin has long been a top defensive squad under coach Bo Ryan, who also preaches balance offensively. Senior guard Ben Brust was the team's leading scorer a year ago, averaging 11.1 points, and he'll be a key to the team's success again this year.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Red Storm are 2-5 ATS in their last seven non-conference games.
                            * Red Storm are 0-4 ATS in their last four neutral site games.
                            * Badgers are 1-4 ATS in their last five non-conference games.

Oregon Ducks vs Georgetown Hoyas (-5, 131)
Site: Camp Humphreys Army Base, South Korea

With the loss of three frontcourt starters, Oregon coach Dana Altman will once again rely on transfers to carry the Ducks back into the NCAA tournament. Mike Moser is with his third program and is expected to start at forward, while Jason Calliste and Joseph Young will vie for a spot a shooting guard.

Josh Smith, a 6-10, 350-pound transfer from UCLA, should help to offset the loss of Otto Porter, who led the Hoyas in scoring, rebounding and steals. Greg Whittington was expected to take over Porter's role in the offense, but a torn ACL will leave him sidelined for the entire season.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Ducks are 5-0 ATS in their last five neutral site games.
                            * Ducks are 4-0 ATS in their last four non-conference games.
                            * Hoyas are 18-8 ATS in their last 26 neutral site games.

Alabama Crimson Tide vs Oklahoma Sooners (-5, 132)
                            Site: Dallas, Texas

Alabama must depend on senior guard Trevor Releford to carry the load early after a rough offseason which saw three players from the rotation leave the program. Trevor Lacey, Moussa Gueye and Devonta Pollard have all left. Algie Key, who averaged 17.6 points in community college last season, joins the group and more will be expected from guard Retin Obasohan along with forward Nick Jacobs.

For the Sooners, Ryan Sprangler, Cameron Clark and Tyler Neal highlight a new frontcourt with leading scorer and rebounder Romero Osby gone. Buddy Hield joins fellow sophomores Je’lon Hornbeak and Isaiah Cousins in the backcourt and coach Lon Kruger will be hoping to increase the 16 points combined they produced last season.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Under is 4-1 in Sooners last five neutral site games.
                            * Under is 5-0 in Crimson Tide last five neutral site games.
                            * Crimson Tide are 1-5 ATS in their last six vs. Big 12.

Florida Gulf Coast Eagles at Nebraska Cornhuskers (OFF, OFF)

No longer an unknown after last season's improbable NCAA Tournament success, the Eagles come into the season with not only high expectations, but with a new head coach. Former Kansas assistant Joe Dooley takes over for Andy Enfield, who departed for Southern California after leading the Eagles to the Sweet 16 last season.

After a dismal season in head coach Tim Miles' first season, Nebraska will move into the new Pinnacle Arena, which has already sold out for every Cornhusker game this season. Starters Ray Gallegos, Shavon Shields and David Rivers return to a team that finished 10th in the Big Ten last season.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Under is 43-21-1 in Cornhuskers last 65 home games.
                            * Over is 4-1 in Eagles last five non-conference games.
                            * Eagles are 5-0 ATS in their last five non-conference games.

Colorado Buffaloes vs. Baylor Bears (-4.5, 145)
                            Site: Dallas, Texas

The Buffaloes will have a hard time replacing Andre Roberson (10.9 points, 11.2 rebounds), who left early for the NBA, but have a player expected to join Roberson in the world's top league next season. Spencer Dinwiddie (team-leading 15.3 points) is a 6-6 junior guard capable of dominating a game and considered making himself available for the most recent NBA draft before his father encouraged him to stay in school.

After reaching the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament twice in three seasons, Baylor settled for the NIT in 2013 and crushed Iowa 74-54 to win the tournament title. The Bears will be led by All-Big 12 preseason selections Isaiah Austin - a 7-1 sophomore center who averaged 13 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds - and senior forward Cory Jefferson (13.3 points, eight rebounds). Both players were considered potential first-round picks in the NBA draft if they opted to leave after last season.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Over is 9-4 in Bears last 13 neutral site games.
                            * Buffaloes are 12-5-1 ATS in their last 18 neutral site games.
                            * Over is 4-1 in Buffaloes last five vs. Big 12.

Boston College Eagles at Providence Friars (-2.5, 146)

The Eagles could have one of the nation's better backcourts with sophomore guards Joe Rahon and Olivier Hanlan, who opened eyes coast-to-coast by scoring a freshman-record 41 points in the ACC tournament. Hanlan averaged a team-high 15.4 points and shot nearly 40 percent from long range while Rahon scored 10.1 per game and handed out 123 assists.

The Friars return their top three scorers from a squad that closed the regular season with seven wins in nine games before advancing to the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament. The one key loss was point guard Vincent Council, but the Friars have a replacement in sophomore Kris Dunn, one of the nation's top recruits two years ago.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Underdog is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
                            * Eagles are 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings in Providence.
                            * Over is 5-1 in Eagles last six vs. Big East.

NCAAB betting: Top 3 'under' candidates
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A handful of high-profile NCAA teams are going to find themselves playing plenty of low scoring games this season.

Whether the result of a stifling defense or a struggling offense - or even a combination of the two - these teams should make for some healthy "under" profits - at least, until oddsmakers have a better grasp of how to assess them.

Here are three teams that are good bets to go "under":

                              Iowa State Cyclones (2012-13 O/U: 21-5-0)

No Division I team provided better value to "over" bettors last season than the Fred Hoiberg-coached Cyclones, who boasted one of the top scoring attacks in the nation en route to a 23-12 record and a second-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament. But the good times may be over - at least temporarily - as Iowa State finds itself down four of its top six scorers from a season ago. Add in standout forward Melvin Ejim expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks with a hyperextended knee and Hoiberg's insistence on playing relentless defense, and the Cyclones may be the best "under" bet in the nation.

                              Indiana Hoosiers (15-17-1)

Few high-profile teams face a tougher road than the Hoosiers, who lost all but two players from their roster who averaged at least 10 minutes last season. That list includes No. 2 NBA draft pick Victor Oladipo and fellow lottery choice Cody Zeller, along with Jordan Hulls and Christian Watford. The quartet combined to lead the Hoosiers to the third-highest points-per-game average in the nation (80). This is expected to be a transition season for Indiana, making it the perfect choice for some strong "under" play is it figures out just what it has on the roster.

                              Gonzaga Bulldogs (9-20-2)

The Bulldogs were a strong "under" play for most of last season, and should continue that trend after losing superstar center Kelly Olynyk and Elias Harris. The dynamic duo combined to average better than 32 points per game for Gonzaga and, while returning point guard Kevin Pangos and Providence transfer Gerard Coleman should make up some of the deficit, it will be difficult for the Bulldogs to match their 2012-13 output. Gonzaga is still a defensive power and should roll through the West Coast Conference with ease, but expect the scores to be lower than they were last season.
