    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the more intriguing college football games on this week's schedule:

-- Oklahoma @ Baylor (-14)-- Only second time Stoops has been underdog of 14+ points.

-- Oregon (-10.5) @ Stanford-- Alabama/Florida State rooting for Cardinal.

-- Fresno State (-10) @ Wyomng-- Game opened at Fresno -14. Hmmm

-- Houston @ UCF (-10.5)-- Two of three best teams in the new AAC.

-- UCLA (-1.5) @ Arizona-- Teams jockey for position in Pac-12.

-- LSU @ Alabama (-12)-- Oregon/Florida State rooting for Les Miles

    *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

    13) Roger Goodell was probably happier than hell when he was named NFL Commissioner, but these are strange times for the NFL;
-- Two coaches collapsed on the same weekend, one of whom knew he needed a heart valve operation but was trying to put it off until after the season- the second was thought to have had a stroke, at age 52.
-- Miami lost two starting offensive linemen because one was bullying the other, and the one being bullied walked off the team, and now the alleged bully has been suspended for his alleged actions.
-- Tampa Bay is 0-8, has three players who got staph infections at team HQ, and is coached by a man who fired his QB early this season and who is universally disliked by scouts throughout the NFL, since he mistreated them when he was a college head coach.
-- The QB who got fired was signed by the Vikings for $2M for the rest of the season, but he didn’t even suit up for their game Sunday.
-- Jacksonville is also winless; their best player got suspended for the season for flunking drug tests.
-- For some stupid reason, the Super Bowl is in New Jersey. Outdoors, on a Sunday night in February. Oy.

    12) Miami-Tampa Bay next Monday night figures to be the worst matchup ever for a primetime game, and neither one of those teams is the worst team in Florida. This won’t be a very good lead-in game for ESPN’s marathon of college hoops, which starts right after that game.

    11) Its odd watching live golf at 3am, but Dustin Johnson won the World Golf event in Shanghai over the weekend; think he was 24-under. If this was the Memphis Open, they’d make fun of the course for being too easy (Johnson actually double-bogeyed two holes on Saturday and still finished -24) but I guess its not cool to mock foreign courses.

    10) Panthers-Saints don’t play until Weeks 14-16; who knew they would be such big games? Chances are one of those games will get flexed into NBC’s schedule.

    9) Not only have the Chiefs’ last five games been against QBs who were backups during training camp (or later), two of their next three games are against Denver, which just lost its head coach for at least a month.

    8) Miami Hurricanes lost its star RB Duke Johnson to a broken ankle Saturday night, very tough loss for a gritty ‘canes team.

    7) The average salary of the 125 highest paid players in major league baseball is $14.1M. That’s a staggering figure. The six starting pitchers the A’s used this season made a combined total of less than $11M this season, and they won their division.

    6) Former NBA center Walt Bellamy passed away this weekend at age 74; he was a four-time All-Star and one of just seven players in NBA history to amass more than 20,000 points and 14,000 rebounds in a career.

Bellamy averaged 31.9 ppg as a rookie in 1961, but here in New York, he is best known for being one of two guys (Butch Komives) the Knicks traded to Detroit for Dave DeBusschere, who was the glue guy the Knicks needed as they won their only two NBA titles in 1970 and 1973.

    5) One minute the Packers were one of the favorites in the NFC, the next minute, Aaron Rodgers was in the locker room, Seneca Wallace was their QB and the Packers were an underdog to even make the playoffs.

How do the Packers only have one backup QB and a lousy one at that? The Bills cut Matt Flynn Monday, so they can sign him to back Wallace up while Rodgers is out, but Monday night was an epic disaster for Green Bay.

    4) St John’s is opening its basketball season against Wisconsin Friday night somewhere in South Dakota; there must be a good reason why, but I can’t find it.

    3) After nine weeks of the LVH handicapping contest in Las Vegas, with 1,034 people in it, the six most popular picks each week are an really bad 14-40-1 against the spread. Going against popular opinion has been a good way to make money.

    2) Part why the Vikings are awful: over their last five games, on the first drive of each half, Minnesota has allowed seven TDs and a FG, on ten drives.

    1) You know how Media Day at the Super Bowl is always a big deal? It’s the Tuesday before the game and its in the stadium, and the players have to show up and some of them get asked questions, some of them stupid questions, well this Super Bowl is in New Jersey, in an outdoor stadium.

Are they really going to have Media Day outdoors in Swamp Stadium on a Tuesday afternoon in late January? Who thinks this is a good idea?

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

      Letdown spot

The USC Trojans scored their most impressive win of the season Friday, upending Oregon State with a 31-14 win in Corvallis – not an easy thing to do for an underperforming program like Southern Cal. The Trojans got massive efforts on the ground from Silas Redd and Javorius Allen and won back-to-back games for just the second time this season.

Southern Cal is primed for the letdown heading to Cal as 17-point chalk in Week 11. The Trojans play their second straight road game and visit a Golden Bears squad that is still fighting despite a laundry list of injuries leading to a 1-8 record. On top of walking into Berkeley all fat and cocky, USC could also get caught looking ahead to a showdown with Stanford next week.

      Lookahead spot

The Los Angeles Clippers are among the favorites to claim the Western Conference title and eventually meet the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals – if all goes according to oddsmakers’ plans. The Clippers have a possible finals preview against the Heat in South Beach Thursday night but have a daunting schedule this week, including a red-alert letdown spot in Orlando Wednesday.

Los Angeles’ trip to Orlando is sandwiched between a huge home date with Houston Monday and Thursday’s marquee matchup in Miami. The Magic were projected to be among the worst teams in the Eastern Conference but haven’t rolled over, knocking off the Nets Sunday and going 4-0 ATS in their first four games. Orlando has two full days off to prepare for the Clippers while L.A. has to cross the country for this Wednesday contest.

      Schedule spot

The Minnesota Vikings are wearing thin. Not only are the Vikes down and out after letting a sure win slip through their hands in Dallas but are also wrapping up a tough stretch of schedule that has them playing four games in just 18 days, heading into Thursday’s home game with the Washington Redskins as 1-point home underdogs.

Minnesota, which is just 1-7 SU (3-5 ATS), will also be playing in its third primetime game in the past four weeks Thursday, losing to the Giants on Monday Night Football in Week 7 and falling to Green Bay on Sunday Night Football in Week 8. That busy slate and the emotional roller coaster of constantly getting embarrassed on national TV is a heavy tax on this struggling team.

College football line watch: Auburn backers act now

        Spread to bet now

Auburn Tigers (-7.5) at Tennessee Volunteers

Never mind the tick over a key number, because by the end of the week, we suspect that Auburn backers might have to be worrying about the next pivot number up the ladder at 10.

There has already been some appetite in the marketplace for the Tigers, who opened a solid 7 at most outlets for this SEC clash at Knoxville.

With six-straight wins and spread covers, and improving by the week, Gus Malzahn’s team is starting to attract lots of attention, and the public can be expected to keep betting up the new “it” team on the college football map.

Outscored 76-13 the past two weeks by Bama and Mizzou, Tennessee is not going to get a lot of support from the sports book patrons.

Grab the 7.5 now with Auburn before the price challenges the next key number resistance point at 10 later in the week.

        Spread to wait on

USC Trojans at Cal Golden Bears (+17)

Though Cal has quietly covered two games on the trot after dropping 12 straight on the board from mid 2012 to mid-October 2013, Golden Bear support headed to the Sierras long ago.

Enduring the worst season in Berkeley since Tom Holmoe’s last campaign in 2001, Cal is hardly a public team these days. And the sharps stopped paying attention to Cal (unless as a go-against) long before HC Sonny Dykes arrived on the scene.

USC, however, can quickly rally its legion of followers with efforts such as last Friday’s 31-14 romp past Oregon State, which has revived hope that the Trojans can salvage a decent bowl bid out of what has already been a disrupted season featuring HC Lane Kiffin’s dismissal.

Further, it has been one-way traffic in this series over most of the last decade, with SC winning the last nine meetings outright, and covering 7 of the last 8, mostly by significant margins. The Golden Bears are also 1-8 vs. the line in their last nine in Strawberry Canyon.

We suspect Cal backers can get a few more points, perhaps close to the next key numbers up the scale at 20 or even 21, by waiting until later in the week. The Bears’ recent spread-covering efforts at least suggests they are still playing hard, and Cal might offer decent value at the higher price.

        Total to watch

        BYU Cougars at Wisconsin Badgers

We are very curious to note where the oddsmakers will place the total in this fascinating November intersectional at Madison.

Both BYU and Wisconsin are 5-3 to the Under this campaign, and perceptions of the two teams might suggest a suppressed total at Camp Randall Stadium.

The Cougars, however, have accelerated their offensive pace in recent games behind emerging soph QB Taysom Hill, and have scored 31 or more in five straight outings.

The extra angle is the coaching matchup between BYU’s Bronco Mendenhall and Wiscy’s Gary Andersen, both defensive experts by trade.

Last season, when Andersen coached at Utah State, the Cougs and Utags played one of the best defensive wars of 2012, with BYU prevailing 6-3, one of the easiest Unders of last season.

We will be curious to see if the oddsmakers respect the reputations of these coaches and recent defense-oriented nature of the respective programs, or bend to the current reality of potent offenses each way and post this total well into the 50s.

Tuesday's NCAAF action: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bowling Green Falcons at Miami (Ohio) RedHawks (+23.5, OFF)

Coming off back-to-back heartwrenching losses to Mississippi State and Toledo, the Bowling Green Falcons need a bounceback in the worst way. Miami of Ohio presents a golden opportunity for that as the Mid-American Conference rivals meet Tuesday night at Yager Stadium. Bowling Green dropped both games by a combined four points, but should respond well against a RedHawks team still looking for its first win of the season.

The Falcons fell behind 21-0 to Toledo in its previous game, then roared back to score 25 straight points before allowing Terrance Owens' go-ahead 11-yard touchdown pass to Alonzo Russell with 1:22 remaining. Despite the setback, Bowling Green remains in the hunt for the MAC East title. No such aspirations exist for Miami (Ohio), which was thumped 41-16 in Ohio 10 days ago and is averaging a paltry 10.9 points per game.

          TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPNU
LINE: Bowling Green opened as a 24.5-point favorite, but the line has dropped one point since.
WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the low-50s with partly cloudy skies.

ABOUT BOWLING GREEN (5-3, 3-1 MAC):
While the defense gets most of the attention - and rightfully so - sophomore quarterback Matt Johnson is quietly putting together a terrific season. Johnson has thrown for 1,827 yards - good for fourth in the conference - and while he has just nine touchdown passes, he has been only been picked off three times. Travis Greene has also been solid offensively, ranked third in the MAC with 906 rushing yards.

ABOUT MIAMI (OHIO) (0-8, 0-4 MAC):
The numbers are bad across the board for the RedHawks, who are one of only a handful of winless teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Miami ranks dead last in the 13-team conference in total yards per game at 228.1 - 60 fewer than the closest team (Massachusetts) and more than 100 fewer than 11th-place Central Michigan. Quarterback Austin Boucher has thrown at least one TD pass in five straight games.

          TRENDS:

          * Falcons are 8-1 ATS in their last nine road games vs. teams with losing home records.
          * Redhawks are 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight conference games.
          * Under is 12-3 in Miami's last 15 games following a SU win.

Ohio Bobcats at Buffalo Bulls (-4, OFF)

First place in the Mid-American Conference's East Division is at stake Tuesday night when the Buffalo Bills host the Ohio Bobcats at UB Stadium. The Bulls have reeled off six consecutive wins since dropping consecutive decisions to ranked foes Ohio State and Baylor. The Bobcats should present a formidable challenge, having won five of six - including back-to-back games in which they outscored Eastern Michigan and Miami (Ohio) by a combined 53 points.

Tuesday's matchup pits two of the conference's most formidable pass offenses against one another. Ohio quarterback Tyler Tettleton has already thrown for more than 2,000 yards and is coming off a 306-yard, three-touchdown performance against the RedHawks. He'll be opposed by Buffalo QB Joe Licata, who threw two touchdown passes in a win over Kent State on Oct. 26 and hasn't been intercepted in his last four games.

          TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2
LINE: Buffalo is a four-point favorite after opening at -2.5.
WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the mid-40s with wind blowing north across the length of the field at 5 mph.

          ABOUT OHIO (6-2, 3-1 MAC):
The Bobcats have plenty at stake Tuesday beyond the ability to move into a first-place tie with Buffalo atop the east. A victory would move Ohio over the .500 mark all-time for the first time since the start of the 1995 season. The Bobcats will also be looking to surpass the 40-point plateau for the third consecutive contest - something they haven't done since 2000.

          ABOUT BUFFALO (6-2, 4-0 MAC):
As prolific as Licata has been this season, the Bulls have been equally dependent on standout running back Branden Oliver. The talented senior exploded for 216 rushing yards in a victory over UMass back on Oct. 19 to become the school's all-time yardage leader, passing current Green Bay Packers running back James Starks. Oliver ranks fourth in the conference in both rushing yards (874) and rushing touchdowns (nine).

          TRENDS:

          * Bobcats are 7-1-1 in their last nine games following a bye week.
          * Bulls are 5-0 in their last five games overall.
          * Over is 5-0 in the last five meetings.

Good news, guys!! The site is starting to function properly again! We're really getting there.

I put today's NCAAF trends in here because, last week, the football threads kinda got lost way back in the board. That's been fixed so, later today, I will be starting the normal football threads.

Man, I'm glad things are getting easy again!

Thanks, Monte! Positive results are really showing now.
